Charlie Rouse Band’s Brazilian Jazz Classic Cinnamon Flower Gets Deluxe Reissue

Resonance Records is set to release a definitive reissue of Cinnamon Flower, the vibrant 1977 Brazilian jazz album by Charlie Rouse, on July 18, 2025. The deluxe reissue arrives as a limited-edition 2-LP set (1,000 copies on 180-gram vinyl), a deluxe CD, and a digital download, featuring both the original release and — for the first time — the undubbed, unaltered version of the album, as it was originally recorded.

Originally released by Douglas Records, Cinnamon Flower captured Rouse — best known for his 11-year run as tenor saxophonist in Thelonious Monk’s band — blending Brazilian rhythms with soul and swing. The project marked a continuation of his early bossa nova explorations, dating back to 1962’s Bossa Nova Bacchanal.

The original sessions, engineered by George Klabin (now Resonance Records co-president), featured an all-star 11-piece band including Claudio Roditi, Dom Salvador, Ron Carter, and Portinho. Producer Alan Douglas later added overdubs with notable musicians such as Bernard “Pretty” Purdie, Roger Powell, and Clifford Adams, creating a denser, funk-infused mix.

This new reissue presents both versions — the Douglas mix and Klabin’s untouched tapes — plus the previously unreleased track Meeting House by pianist Dom Salvador. All formats include extensive liner notes by acclaimed biographer James Gavin and a heartfelt tribute by Rouse’s son, Charlie “Chico” Rouse, Jr.

"This is one of my favorite recordings," says Klabin. “We’re proud to finally release it in its purest form — a true blend of Brazilian warmth and jazz sophistication.”

Gavin adds, “This release allows listeners to appreciate the artistry of Charlie Rouse beyond his Monk years. His voice, long underrated, shines here with clarity and originality.”

Chico Rouse reflects, “This album was ahead of its time. I hope people now can hear my father’s individuality and his ability to merge his unique voice into an ensemble sound.”

Resonance Records, known for award-winning archival jazz releases, continues its mission of honoring jazz greats through thoughtful presentation and historical depth.
