The legendary Brian Jackson—best known as Gil Scott-Heron’s longtime co-writer and musical partner—steps forward with a powerful new release, "It’s Your World," produced by the iconic Masters At Work duo, Kenny Dope and Louie Vega. Featuring stirring contributions from Raheem DeVaughn and J. Ivy, this single bridges past and present with a rich, soulful sound that’s deeply resonant today.
Brian Jackson reflects on the song’s origins:
"Back when I wrote this song, the latest greeting in the hood was 'What’s happening, baby?' For a while brothers settled on: 'Ah man, it’s your world.'
As a twenty-something, shy kid from Brooklyn, that phrase made me start thinking that if it’s really true, I must be okay—whoever and wherever I was.
This song was Brian reassuring Brian—and other Brians—who might have needed it too."
Fast forward to 2025, and "It’s Your World" is reborn as an 11-minute sonic journey. With high-value production from Louie Vega and Kenny Dope, the track weaves lush soundscapes featuring string arrangements by Leroy Burgess (performed by the Apple Hill String Quartet). It masterfully blends tradition with innovation, honoring Jackson’s legacy while moving his music forward.
Raheem DeVaughn, celebrated for his genre-bending voice and emotional delivery, brings the song to life, shifting seamlessly through tones and feelings. Meanwhile, Grammy Award-winning poet J. Ivy adds a poetic spirit, delivering mantras that echo the song’s themes of self-worth and empowerment.
"It’s Your World" is the first taste of Brian Jackson’s forthcoming album, Now More Than Ever—a reimagining of 17 classic tracks co-written with Gil Scott-Heron, brought into the present with fresh energy and a new cast of collaborators.
