Carla Thomas’ Long-Lost Soul Classic Makes Its Vinyl Debut for Record Store Day

For the first time ever, Carla Thomas’ Sweet Sweetheart is arriving on vinyl—just in time for Record Store Day, April 12. This long-overlooked treasure, recorded in 1970 but unreleased for decades, will be available as a limited-edition translucent light blue LP, with only 1,200 copies pressed exclusively for RSD.

Known as the Queen of Memphis Soul, Carla Thomas made history as the top female artist at Stax Records, and Sweet Sweetheart offers a rare glimpse into a pivotal moment in her career. Produced by the legendary Chips Moman at American Sound Studio, the album bridges the warmth of Southern soul with the heartfelt twang of country and the polished edge of early '70s pop.

Though it remained unreleased until a 2013 CD issue, Sweet Sweetheart now makes its long-awaited vinyl debut—55 years after it was recorded.

On this album, Thomas reinterprets songs by the likes of James Taylor, the Bee Gees, Carole King, and Gerry Goffin, transforming each one with her unmistakable voice and soul-drenched phrasing. Highlights include a smooth, slowed-down take on “Hi De Ho (That Old Sweet Roll)”, an exuberant and beat-driven version of “Country Road”, and a heartbreakingly intimate rendition of “To Love Somebody.”

This release isn’t just a reissue—it’s a resurrection of a timeless performance that never got its due. For fans of Memphis soul, vintage vinyl, and powerful female voices, Sweet Sweetheart is a must-have.
