From the original producers of the Slow Jams series comes a traditional take on the romance and splendor of the holiday season.  Celebrating the spirit of Christmas with time-honored yuletide medleys, A Slow Jams Jazz Christmas puts a stylish spin on the Slow Jams brand. This album brings dreamy nostalgia of holidays gone by spent listening to jazz icons such as Dave Brubeck, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Vince Guaraldi, Coleman Hawkins, Oscar Peterson, and others. PEGGY DUQUESNEL - ALL I ASK FOR CHRISTMAS

There is always a bit of an uproar when Santa and the elves debate over music preferences while toiling away in their North Pole workshop preparing for the big night. Some prefer swinging to straight-ahead jazz instrumentals while others prefer contemporary vocal numbers. Multidimensional pianist and vocalist Peggy Duquesnel’s “All I Ask for Christmas” is certain to satisfy everyone with her generous 21-song collection that will be released November 5th by Joyspring Music. Duquesnel produced the two-CD set - one acoustic jazz instrumental disc and one vocal disc - offering fresh arrangements of seasonal standards along with four new songs that she composed and recorded as both instrumental and vocal selections. The entire album will be serviced to jazz radio stations while smooth jazz outlets will be gifted with the single, “Hark the Herald Angels Sing,” featuring genre star Rick Braun’s regal flugelhorn.

The instrumental portion of “All I Ask for Christmas” is a return to the classically-trained pianist’s roots in straight-ahead jazz presented with elements of adult pop, contemporary jazz and inspirational material on this, her seventh full-length outing. Backed by a crackling quartet – Grammy-nominated bassist Brian Bromberg on upright, drummer Joe La Barbera (Bill Evans, Tony Bennett, Bill Cunliffe), percussionist Brian Kilgore (Barbra Streisand, John Williams, Elton John, Coldplay, Aerosmith) and guitarist Jay Leach (“American Idol,” Barry Manilow, Gladys Knight) – Duquesnel’s arrangements are influenced by storied artists from yesteryear (George & Ira Gershwin, Horace Silver, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra) along with a dose of contemporary acoustic jazz (Dave Grusin, Bob James, Miles Davis).

On the vocal disc, Duquesnel sings and scats three duets with debonair vocalist Bill Cantos: the bebop title track penned by Duquesnel; the aptly titled “Breath of Heaven (Mary’s Song),” which was written and recorded by Amy Grant; and another new Duquesnel gem, “Under the Christmas Tree,” a romantic country gospel waltz adorned with Leach’s pedal steel guitar. Talented newcomer Emma Werderman impresses with a vocal full of moxie during a duet with her mentor (Duquesnel) on the stunning “Mary Did You Know” further illumined by Duquesnel’s piano eloquence. Duquesnel’s glowing jazzer “Light of Christmas” and the waltz-like “Christmas is Here” are new songs written with warmth, familiarity and timeless qualities that have the potential to become enduring evergreens.

“The album concept is to take familiar Christmas songs and put them with unique arrangements that have a jazz influence, but that are all accessible to a broad audience. In the process of making the album, I decided to do instrumental versions of the vocal songs. I am both a vocalist and an instrumentalist and enjoy playing these songs just as much instrumentally as vocally. For the listener, having both versions makes a lot of sense because they set two entirely different moods,” said Duquesne. ~ www.PeggyDuquesnel.com.

JOHN FAHEY - CHRISTMAS SOLI

John Fahey’s Guitar Soli Christmas album is the acoustic guitarist’s visionary 1968 set, was a scintillating collection of solo steel-string adaptations of beloved traditional Yuletide melodies (“Joy to the World,” “We Three Kings of Orient Are,” “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”). It reportedly sold more than 100,000 copies on Fahey’s own Takoma label, tabbing it as his best-selling album, and inspired several more memorable holiday sets from the guitarist: Christmas With John Fahey Vol. II (1975, also on Takoma), Christmas Guitar Volume One (1982, on the Varrick label), and Popular Songs of Christmas & New Year’s, a duet collection with fellow guitarist Terry Robb (1983, on Varrick).

All four of those brilliant albums are generously represented on Fantasy’s newly compiled Christmas Guitar Soli With John Fahey, a 14-song compilation of highlights from Fahey’s Yuletide catalog. Scheduled for October 29 CD release, the collection provides a lovely soundtrack for the upcoming holiday season and boasts newly created cover art by Tom Weller, who designed the artwork for many of Fahey’s original Takoma albums, that’s done in the style of those classic sets. In addition, Fantasy will reissue The New Possibility: John Fahey’s Guitar Soli Christmas Album in its original vinyl LP form on November 5.

The new CD’s first five selections (the three mentioned above, plus “Auld Lang Syne” and a medley of “Hark, The Herald Angels Sing” and “O, Come All Ye Faithful”) hail from the classic ’68 set. “Oh Holy Night,” “Carol of the Bells” (a duet with guitarist Richard Ruskin), and a medley of “Oh, Tannenbaum,” “Angels We Have Heard on High,” and “Jingle Bells” are taken from his 1975 follow-up LP. Moving over to the Varrick imprint, Fahey recorded “The First Noel,” “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear,” and “Silent Night, Holy Night” for Christmas Guitar Volume One, while “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,” “The Christmas Song,” and a medley of “Deck the Halls With Boughs of Holly” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” hail from the duet album with Robb. The compilation’s 14 selections summarize Fahey’s long-term commitment to finger-picking timeless Christmas melodies on his acoustic axe.

Born February 28, 1939 in Washington, D.C., Fahey was brought up from age six in suburban Takoma Park, Maryland (inspiring the name of his future label).  Blending country, bluegrass, and blues into a groundbreaking guitar technique that also incorporated classical influences (a hybrid later termed American Primitivism), Fahey first recorded in 1958 and released his debut album (which introduced his alter ego of Blind Joe Death) the next year on his fledgling Takoma imprint. Only 100 copies were pressed initially. In 1963, Fahey and fellow record collector ED Denson tracked down pre-war blues legend Bukka White, recording him anew for Takoma and relaunching White’s career. Fahey released his own Takoma encore set, Death Chants Breakdowns and Military Waltzes, during this same period.

While not releasing all of his subsequent albums on Takoma, Fahey continued to record prolifically for the label that he founded into the early 1980s. He weathered a bout with ill health and lived in poverty for a time, but made a heartwarming comeback during the ‘90s. Fahey died February 22, 2001 following a coronary bypass operation.

The concept of playing holiday classics on acoustic steel-string guitar was unheard of until Fahey explored the tantalizing possibility. Christmas Guitar Soli With John Fahey collects the best of his Yuletide performances on one warmly inspiring collection.

NEW RELEASES - JOE BRENT & SARA CASWELL, JORDANA TALSKY, MIKE FIELD

JOE BRENT & SARA CASWELL

Sara, recognized as a "Rising Star" in the 2013 DownBeat Magazine Critics Poll and as one of the top jazz violinists in both the 2011 and 2012 JazzTimes Readers Poll, regularly performs with her two groups, the Sara Caswell Quartet and the Caswell Sisters Quintet, as well as vocalist Roseanna Vitro (2012 Grammy nominee) and the genre-defying Rose & the Nightingale. She has toured extensively with bassist/vocalist Esperanza Spalding (3-time Grammy winner including "Best New Artist" in 2011), violinist Mark O'Connor's American String Celebration, soloed numerous times in Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops, and performed and/or recorded with many artists including Regina Carter, Fred Hersch, David Krakauer, Gene Bertoncini, Charlie Byrd, Skitch Henderson, Nadje Noordhuis, and Alan Ferber. Currently on faculty at Manhattan School of Music's Jazz Arts Division, Sara studied classical violin with the legendary Josef Gingold, has won over 100 awards and first-place prizes in the jazz and classical competition worlds, and has released two highly-acclaimed solo CDs - First Song and But Beautiful - and a CD with her sister, vocalist Rachel Caswell, entitled Alive in the Singing Air. Says O'Connor: "Most good violinists will never experience what Sara creates with her instrument. It is beautifully refined emotion that lifts the spirit and at the same time, crystallizes for me this thought: jazz violin could really have something to offer again."

Joe Brent, a graduate of Berklee College of Music, also studied the mandolin in Italy before relocating back to New York City. He was a longtime member of pop sensation Regina Spektor's touring ensemble, and has performed and recorded with Woody Allen, Jewel, Gary Smulyan, and Stephane Grappelli. Simultaneously, he has maintained a career in classical music, having performed as soloist with the Chicago Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, The Boston Symphony, and countless others. He released his first album, Point of Departure, in 2007, featuring music by Astor Piazzolla, J.S. Bach, and Manuel de Falla, and in 2009 released solo. EP, an album of solo mandolin arrangements of songs by rock artists such as Animal Collective and The Flaming Lips. He has recorded the complete mandolin music of David Loeb and an album of the lute music of John Dowland, and in 2009 was added to the faculty of Mannes College, where he remains the only mandolin instructor at a major American conservatory. Music journalist Don von Schrilz said, "There has probably never been a mandolin player with better technical skills, and he matches that with an enthusiasm for every imaginable role a mandolin can fulfill," and he has been described as, "One of the truly exceptional musicians of his generation," by David McGee of The Bluegrass Special.

Together, Joe and Sara weave a broad musical tapestry, using the delicate strands of folk music and the incendiary embers of jazz and rock. Drawing material from artists as diverse as Stevie Wonder, Astor Piazzolla, and Weezer, along with original compositions reflecting their diverse backgrounds, Brent and Caswell are a musical experience not to be missed.

JORDANA TALSKY - STANDARD DEVIATION

Jordana Talsky's debut album, Standard Deviation, marks the arrival of a serious young talent in Canadian jazz. The vocalist/songwriter has been turning heads (and ears) on the Toronto scene for the last three years, and her musical career now takes a giant leap forward with this superb solo record. Standard Deviation features a seamless mix of pop and jazz material. Jordana succinctly describes the style of the record as "jazzy takes on pop songs and poppier takes on jazz songs. I am always attracted to new combinations, rather than strictly sticking to a genre." As the album title suggests, this is not just another conventional album of Great American Songbook standards. She does breathe vibrant new life into a few such classics, giving a bossa twist to "Old Devil Moon" and a breezy feel to "Devil May Care," while these tunes nestle snugly alongside fresh reinterpretations of pop-rock hits by Alannah Myles (her signature tune "Black Velvet"), The Police (a sly take on "Murder By Numbers") and The Cardigans' "Love Me (Lovefool)." Â The funky and infectiously upbeat "Panta Niwas" is, she explains, "based on some of my experiences in Nepal, when I lived there in my year between undergraduate and law school studies." The other original, "Whogonnahold," is a more introspective and philosophical look at life, but one delivered with delightful exuberance. No matter the repertoire, Talsky consistently displays an eloquent and fluent voice. Her phrasing is impeccable, and she never succumbs to the temptation of trying to impress with the technical ability she clearly possesses. The accompaniment of her ace band is always empathetic. Standard Deviation?. A high standard sensation!

MIKE FIELD - RUSH MODE

Since the release of his first album Ashes in 2011, brilliant jazz man Mike Field has been on the move gigging from one big city to the next - travelling as far afield as Germany, France, New Zealand and even on board a ship to Antarctica - but mainly shuttling between Los Angeles and Toronto, all the while composing a continuous stream of new material. Field continues the whirlwind of activity with his latest CD RUSH MODE - an eclectic collection of jazz tunes ranging from classic bebop to Latin-flavoured romps. The through line is as the title suggests, a portrait of the way we live our busy lives, though Field's take is definitely more on the positive side. As with his last album, Field likes to keep it upbeat on Rush Mode. The band does it all here and they do it all really well. The songs are driven mainly by Field's playful, virtuoso trumpet and the superb artistry of saxman Paul Metcalfe; the pair play on these recordings as if they're "brothers from another mother." The short, snappy, bouncy tunes keep the sense of excitement and energy throughout, save for the hauntingly beautiful ballad "The Last of the Summer Days" featuring the exquisite, smoky vocals of musical guest Sophia Perlman. Among the highlights are the title track, where sprightly flamenco flourishes (by special guest Kevin Laliberte on guitar), meet classic bop horns; "Play for You," a vintage, dirty-thirties-style tune, grounded by a tango beat with seamlessly interwoven play between Metcalfe's sax and Field's alternately growling and soaring trumpet; and the aptly-named "Balkan Swing", an Eastern European snake-charmer that features florid piano riffs and showcases Field's penchant for world music rhythms and melodies. In addition to Field and Metcalfe, the Mike Field Jazz Quintet includes exceptional players Carlie Howell on upright bass, Dave Chan on drums, Teri Parker on piano with special guest musicians Rosendo "Chendy" Leon on percussion and Mark Eisenman on Fender rhodes and piano. Produced by Shelly Berger, the nine-track album was recorded at Canterbury Music Company in Toronto between June 2012 and May 2013, engineered by Jeremy Darby and mixed by Andrew Mullin.

NEW RELEASES - REBECA VALLEJO, GRUVORIA, GEORGE BENSON'S 1968 CLASSIC - GIBLET GRAVY - REISSUED

REBECA VALLEJO - AZUCAR CANELA

Madrid born vocalist and composer Rebeca Vallejo is a most versatile and innovative performer. Known for combining her ancestral Flamenco roots, her deep love and understanding of Brazilian music, with the language of Jazz, Rebeca Vallejo deftly weaves all these elements into a sound that is truly unique.  Rebeca's third studio album entitled "Azucar Canela" is a collection of 8 original compositions, two unique adaptations of Jazz standards and a "Buleria" interpretation of a Milton Nascimento's classic "Cravo e Canela. The album is being brought to life under the direction of Grammy Award Winning producer John Seymour (Santana, U2, Dave Matthews Band). "Azucar Canela" reaches beyond what's purely "entertaining" creating a unifying journey where three musical cultures, three countries (Spain, Brazil, US), and three different types of "blues" converge.  Among the internationally sought-after musicians who participated in the recording of this album are Spanish Flamenco pianist Ariadna Castellanos, Brazilian percussionist Ze Mauricio, Argentinian pianist Emillio Solla, Spanish "cajonero" Jose Antonio Montana and Chilean percussionist Yayo Serka.

GRUVORIA - THE SIXTH KNUCKLE

In early 2007, Gruvoria attracted the attention of some of Canada's top musical tastemakers with their acclaimed second album Dirty Fuel. Now, guitarist & composer Blair Purdy and his 6-piece jazz-funk powerhouse are back with their third full-length album, The Sixth Knuckle. Gruvoria is a fascinating study in contrasts -- full of musical muscle, creative testosterone and edge, yet also playful and accessible to a wide range of music lovers. The band is comprised of some of the finest cross-genre players in Toronto, including: Purdy (guitar, composition & vocals), Ashot Grigorian (alto sax), Marcus Ali (tenor & baritone sax), Eric Boucher (keyboards), Ross MacIntyre (bass) and Vladimir Mladenovic (drums). The title of the new record references both Purdy's unique guitar style and his experience as a highly trained karate sensei and educator; the sixth knuckle is below the baby finger where the hand meets the wrist, and is one of the strongest and most resilient places from which to strike an opponent. The album was recorded live off the floor over a two-day span at Purdy's BPM Studios in King Township, Ontario; the music studio doubles as his dojo. In addition to the original songs, the album features covers of 'Times Like These' by Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters), the Headhunters classic 'Daffy's Dance' and 'Friar Laurence' by legendary classical composer Sergei Prokofiev. Yes, you read that correctly -- a jazz-funk version of Prokofiev! Griuvoria's club and festival resume includes the Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival, Beaches Jazz Festival, the Festival of Friends (Hamilton), Lula Lounge, Trane Studio, and Supermarket. They have shared the stage with the likes of Elizabeth Shepherd, Souljazz Orchestra, Burnt Sugar: The Arkestra Chamber and Kobo Town. The band is also highly in-demand for private parties and events, particularly in the film industry.

GEORGE BENSON - GIBLET GRAVY

This reissue of Benson's 1968 Verve LP is worth the price of admission just for three of the small-group cuts. "Billie's Bounce," "Low Down and Dirty," and "Thunder Walk" find the guitarist stretching out in the company of Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Billy Cobham on an uptempo Charlie Parker blues, a gutbucket slow blues and a deeply blue hard-bop groove tune, respectively. This recording sits right between Benson's early small-combo records as a leader (COOKBOOK and IT'S UPTOWN) and his move to even more heavily produced recordings for CTI. The grooves are groovy, the horns are punchy, and the then-future of jazz guitar makes his way through the charts as feature artist, laying down the head, shadow boxing with the swaggering arrangements for a chorus or two, and getting out in a radio-friendly two minute and fifty-nine seconds. Plus you get to hear Benson and Hancock duking it out like they mean it on "Low Down and Dirty." All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of Verve's By Request series. Recorded at A&R Recording Studios and Capitol Recording Studios, New York, New York from February 5-7, 1968. Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff. Reissue producer: Bryan Koniarz. Personnel: George Benson (guitar); Tom McIntosh (conductor); Eileen Gilbert, Albertine Robinson, Lois Winter (vocals); Pepper Adams (baritone saxophone); Jimmy Owens (trumpet, flugelhorn); Ernie Royal, Snooky Young (trumpet); Alan Raph (bass trombone); Herbie Hancock (piano); Eric Gale, Carl Lynch (guitar); Ron Carter, Bob Cranshaw (bass); Billy Cobham (drums); Johnny Pacheco (congas, tambourine). Producer: Esmond Edwards. Q (1/01, p. 122) - 3 out of 5 stars - "... There's a soul element here.... Go straight to be-bop blues classic 'Billie's Bounce' or the 'What's New' alternate takes for modern jazz guitar at its finest."

NEW RELEASES - DANE MAXIM RICHESON, TODD HILDRETH TRIO, STEVE TELEGA

DANE MAXIM RICHESON - MAXIM CONFIT

Maxim Confit is a mix of jazz and world music influences that features renown artists such as David Liebman---saxophone, Joe Locke--vibes/marimba, Jamey Haddad--drums/percussion, Bill Carrothers--piano, Vic Juris---guitar, Michael Spiro--percussion. Each track is unique with using different instrumentation and abrupt changes in musical styles. For instance, track one, Simbomba, features the African Kora (played by Kane Mathis) playing a traditional song of Gambia and arranged by Ken Schaphorst. Track two is a break beat version of Monk's Evidence that moves through several mood changes lead by Joe Locke on vibes, Jose Encarnacion on sax, and Bill Carrothers on piano.

TODD HILDRETH TRIO - HYMNS

Todd's first instrument was the accordion at age 10. He took to the instrument well, but found himself switching to piano after seeing a performance by Jerry Lee Lewis at age twelve. Todd found a gift for improvisation, but didn't take his talents seriously through high school. Todd enrolled in Bellarmine College (now Bellarmine University) in 1985 with the intention of becoming a high school English teacher. As he roamed the campus and found empty practice rooms to play around in, he began to befriend students and faculty at Bellarmine. By the end of his first semester, he switched his major to Music with a Jazz Emphasis (though he would go on to earn an additional BA in English from Bellarmine). For the next ten years, Todd would make his living as a freelance jazz, commercial, and liturgical musician, quickly gaining the reputation as a creative and versatile improvising musician. In 1992, he founded the Java Men, an all-original jazz unit that won the LEO poll's "Best Jazz Band" four consecutive times. Java Men released four CDs in their 12-year existence, and toured the country several times, making several appearances at The Knitting Factory in New York City. In the year 1999, Todd was invited to join the faculty of Jamey Aebersold's Summer Jazz Camps. The faculty has boasted such luminaries as David Baker, Kenny Werner, Eric Alexander and Lynne Arriale. Shortly afterward, he was asked to become the music director for Ascension Lutheran Church in Louisville, and was hired by Bellarmine University to join their Jazz and Music Technology faculty. In the course of his career, Todd has performed with, recorded with, or opened for The Coasters, The Platters, Martha and The Vandellas, Eugene Chadbourne, Jimmy Raney, Conrad Herwig, Buckwheat Zydeco, The Monkees, Liberation Prophecy, Love Jones, King Kong (at Lollapalooza), Dave Stryker, Victor Wooten, The Shangri-Las, Brian Setzer, Liz Phair, Aretha Franklin and Nora Jones.

STEVE TALEGA - JUNE BALLOON

This CD was recorded in two sessions. It just fell into place so quickly with so little effort. A truly joyful experience. I've been making music with these two band-mates in a number of ensembles for many years and it shows in the musical telepathy you'll hear on this recording. These were a bunch of my compositions that cover a lot of stylistic territory, and I wanted this CD to be a snapshot of just how broad we can range as a trio...though there is one solo keyboard piece. We had a lot of fun making the record and I think that shines through in the music. I hope you love it! In case you're wondering, all the keyboard sounds are onboard my new Nord Stage 2...a glorious instrument!

BAHAMA SOUL CLUB - THE CUBAN TAPES

The Cuban Tapes consists of 17 tracks of the finest Club Jazz and again with selected vocal features like some of the most announced artists of the contemporary Cuban music Scene: Danay Suarez, Arema Arega, and Telmary Diaz - a grandiose trio which was also selected by Gilles Peterson for his terrific 'Havana Culture’ project.  Also included  are three generations of distinguished American singers from the past  until now, starting with Jazz and Gospel legend Bessie Smith, Soul and Funk diva Spanky Wilson and the Grammy nominated Soul and Blues Powerhouse Ruthie Foster. Finally on top of that the wonderful Anna Luca from mighty Club Des Belugas. The feel of the album is a bit more darker and deeper than what you would expect from The Bahama Soul Club – it’s an alluring Tiki blend through Jazz with Afro-Cuban rhythms and instrumentation, environmental sounds with lush and romantic themes throughout.

CHUCK MANGIONE - LOVE NOTES / DISGUISE / SAVE TONIGHT FOR ME

Three Chuck Mangione albums from the 80s – all packed here together in a single set! Love Notes is full of cool compressed flugelhorn from Mangione – and a set that also features the leader on some Fender Rhodes as well! Chuck's working here in a small combo setting that keeps up the best vibe of his fusion classics from the 70s – that compressed quality that made magic with much bigger audiences than were reached by the usual jazz players of his generation – yet handled with that well-crafted vibe that still gave Mangione some respect from the old school. Tracks are relatively long, and surprisingly creative at times – and titles include "Steppin Out", "No Problems", "Memories Of Scirocco", "Love Note", and "To The 80s". On Disguise, Chuck Mangione gets some great help from Deodato – who not only plays keyboards on the set, but also arranged and produced – in a way that gives lots of the tracks the same soulful vibe as his own records from the time! Deodato's groove is definitely more 80s-styled than some of Mangione's other music – but the overall approach is still nice and warm, and plenty soulful – thanks to those compressed flugelhorn lines that Mangione blows so beautifully. Titles include "Josephine", "Leonardo's Lady", "Love Theme From London & Davis In New York", "Diana D", and "Love Wears No Disguise" – plus the odd "Shirley MacLaine", which also features some weird rapping from Shirley herself! Save Tonight For Me explores the soulful side of Chuck Mangione – a set that still features plenty of lead solos from Chuck, but which also brings in some fuller backings that have a contemporary R&B vibe overall! Most numbers are still instrumental – although there's a bit of vocals on the set – and as with other Mangione records from previous years, keyboards are often the other key element in the mix – an instrument that Chuck's learned to solo with in a really sweet way. Titles include "Machu Picchu", "Rockin At Red Rocks", "Sweet Cheryl Lynn", "Give Your Heart A Chance", and "TJ's Gingerbread House". ~ Dusty Groove

Other musical guests include The Doors’ Ray Manzarek, Bela Fleck, Alan Parsons, Todd Rundgren,David Benoit, Billy Dean, Jimmy Wayne, Larry Carlton, Doyle Dykes, Mindi Abair, Robert Schwartzman, Cage The Elephant’s Lincoln Parish, Rick Braun and others. The album is available exclusively at the following five wineries until release in February 2014: Far Niente; Silver Oak Cellars and Twomey Cellars, Pride Mountain Vineyards, Casa Piena, and Gargiulo Vineyards.

David Pack has won international acclaim both for his solo work and as front-man for progressive rock group Ambrosia. He is a Grammy winning producer of legendary artists including Wynonna, Selena, Aretha Franklin and Kenny Loggins, and a Music Director of global stage events including both of President Clinton’s Inaugurals and events for Barbra Streisand, Elton John & the late Leonard Bernstein, and recently for Avon, with Fergie of Black Eyed Peas and The Who’s Pete Townshend Tec Awards. His #1 pop classics such as “Biggest Part of Me” “How Much I Feel” “You’re The Only Woman” have graced global radio for over 35 years winning BMI 5 mil. Airplay awards. His collective works as a performer and producer have sold over 40 million units worldwide. He credits mentors & friends Leonard Bernstein & Quincy Jones, whom Pack introduced, as setting his life’s quest for excellence in creating special music projects that bring people together in unique ways, such as Napa Crossroads, David’s dream project.

Pack describes the experience as “Five years, five wineries and a lot of fun.” He goes on to say, “It’s a time capsule to preserve the memory of friends, Napa Valley and a time that will never be again.” Noted producer and musician, Pack has been drawn to Napa for many years with an unrequited passion for viticulture. He became a welcome figure in the Napa community a number of years ago after developing a friendship with winemaker Jeff Gargiulo and playing concerts for local events in the community. That friendship opened Pack to the world of undiscovered musicians among the winemakers and incited Pack’s desire to create a recording that serves as a backstage pass to a once-in-a-lifetime special event.

The wineries invested in the album financially and creatively, collaborating on two tracks each along with contributions from special guests, culminating in 14 tracks of original material. All songs were produced by Pack and written and recorded in Napa Valley beginning May 2009, which includes one of the final recordings of the late Ray Manzarek.

Larry Maguire, partner & president of Far Niente says, “I love my life in wine, but had I met David when I was 22, I think we could have had one really hot band. Working with him has helped me realize one of the great dreams of my life—to record my songs on a professionally-released album—and it has reawakened my passion for creating and performing music.” Maguire’s compositions, “Corner of His Room” and “Next Adventure” are drawn from moments with his children and the new adventures he and his wife have yet to experience.

“Being included in this project fulfills a dream for me. I have been writing songs for years and thoroughly enjoyed the process of actually getting them finished,” says David Duncan, President and CEO of Silver Oak Cellars, who contributed “Every Time I Look at You,” and “Crossroads Bound,” to the project. One is a love song to his wife and the other follows the concept of the “crossroads” which provide secret ways through the valley.

Suzanne Pride Bryan, Co-owner of Pride Mountain Vineyards says “‘O’ Blessed Vine’ and ‘You Were the One’ capture special moments in time at Pride Mountain Vineyards, where we are always happy to be ‘high on the mountain.’” Suzanne’s songs were inspired by her parents, Jim and Carolyn Pride, the winery’s founders.
“This combined musical effort, which includes five spectacular winery partners, will allow people throughout the world to experience the warmth, spirit, and humanity that grows ‘heartily’ in Napa,” says Carmen Policy, owner of Casa Piena. Policy brought “Full House Full Heart” and “A Friend Like You,” which were influenced by the idea of friends and family, a concept that is embodied in the name of his winery.

“David’s concept of bringing together the art of songwriting with the art of making wine defines Napa Valley and what we are all about. To see his dream come true and be a part of it is truly awesome,” says Jeff Gargiulo owner of Gargiulo Vineyards. His songs, “April Born in May” and “Wine Country Cowboy” were inspired by his daughter and Jeff and David Duncan’s band The Silverado Pickups.

The album will be exclusively available at the following Wineries: Far Niente/Nickel & Nickel, Silver Oak and Twomey, Pride Mountain Vineyards, Casa Piena and Gargiulo Vineyards as of October 15. Official release is set for February 4, 2014.

PERRY SMITH QUARTET - STREET SENSE

Brooklyn Jazz Underground Records have announced the release of the Perry Smith Quartet - Street Sense, the new recording from guitarist/composer Perry Smith. Street Sense, from the California-born, Brooklyn-based artist, was inspired and influenced by simplicity, repetition, melody, spontaneous interaction, and space. Smith explains, "to highlight these concepts I brought on board Dayna Stephens (saxophone), Sam Minaie (bass) and Ross Pederson (drums). I'm very grateful to these incredible musicians who helped me bring this music and these concepts to life. The end result represents a foundation rooted in jazz tradition combined with an artistic drive to create a fresh identity within the art of jazz."

Street Sense opens with "Mr. R.A. The Warrior", inspired by the great artist and teacher, Mr. Ralph Alessi, whom Smith studied composition with when he first moved to New York in 2009. "He often talked about the importance of 'repetition', and I used that as a compositional tool to write this song. I found a melody and harmony that I could effectively repeat and develop at the same time," said Smith.

Next up is the title track, "Street Sense" which epitomizes and embodies the concept of this recording. Smith explains, "the title of this song was inspired by my initial reaction to the climate of 'sessioning' with other jazz musicians in New York. When I arrived, I was consistently blown away by the collective ability of musicians to improvise at such a high level. However, I often felt that some of the original music was technically difficult but conceptually easy to improvise on. This created a dynamic where fellow musicians focused more on their technique than on their concept. Therefore, I was inspired to write something that was the reverse: 'technically easy but conceptually challenging,' which led me to write a simple and repetitive melody at an easy tempo with odd phrases, modern harmony, dynamics, long solo form, rhythmic hits and multiple sections. I received great feedback from players about this song, and it has inspired the concept for my entire album."

"The Searcher" is next, one of the prettiest tunes on the album, liberally peppered with lush chords that truly display Smith's stunning sound, Dayna Stephen's demonstrative voice on tenor saxophone and Minaie's and Pederson's impeccable taste and discernment. For Smith, this composition aims to be reminiscent of, and create the same emotional effect of soulful music that conjures up feelings of nostalgia.

The concepts of simplicity, repetition and melody continue in fine fashion on "Please Repeat After Me", a tune that finds the band really digging in on the thematic melody and the rock inspired groove, spurred on by Stephen's inspired solo, and Smith's own exploratory, stirring solo.

"Talking Points", develops on the theme of Street Sense. "I wanted to write a song in 5/4 time that had a more unpredictable, but still simply, melody. When seeing the notes written on the page, I equated them to points on a map. Understanding that music is a language I came up with the title, explained Smith.

"Open Spaces" is about Smith's love of wide open spaces, and while on a hike one day this simple title came to him. "I wanted the music to reflect that relaxed and grand feeling of being outdoors in open spaces so naturally I wanted the song to be a ballad. In an attempt to mirror the grand beauty and variety that nature possesses, I made sure the melody had a big range and allowed for large dynamic shifts."

Closing the album is the rollicking "Happy Jungle", Smith's homage to New York City, and a nod to Street Sense, which is his first recording as a full-fledged New Yorker.  He explains, "the urban "jungle" in which I live is certainly a crazy place, but with the right attitude and wherewithal it can be a wonderful and happy place to live. To show this musically, I focused on writing a happy and catchy melody in a major mode, at a brisk 7/4 tempo. The free intro represents the uncertain and timid nature that us fresh New Yorkers experience when we first arrive."

With Street Sense guitarist/composer Perry Smith has created an album of sublime beauty, soaring melodies, engrossing improvisation and rhythmic thrills. Certainly one not to be missed from this burgeoning new talent on the scene.

Brooklyn Jazz Underground Records recording artist, guitarist/composer Perry Smith, an integral member of the critically-acclaimed New West Guitar Group, and a busy sideman in New York, combines his love for jazz with broad influences from rock and folk to create a signature style. Smith's extensive performance resume includes notable venues such as the Blue Note Jazz Club (NYC/Tokyo), The Village Vanguard Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, Healdsburg Guitar Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Hoffest (Berlin), The World Expo (Japan), and Yoshi's Jazz Club (SF). As a composer, Smith was a finalist in the 2007 International Songwriting Competition and won the 2006 ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award.

In 2005 he received his Bachelor of Music degree from the Flora L. Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California, where he studied guitar with jazz legend Joe Diorio. In 2011 he completed his Masters in Music at New York University and was named the "Outstanding Graduate" in the Jazz Department.

'MODERN SOUL SAUCE RADIO SHOW' OFFERS UNIQUE PROGRAMMING SHOWCASING WORLD-CLASS & INDEPENDENT JAZZ AND SOUL

The entire concept of Modern Soul Sauce, like many good things in life, started small and innocently. Program manager Jerome Dumortier of Paris-based Internet eclectic mix station, Radio Kaos Caribou (RKC - http://rkc.noip.me), reached out to Denver (Colorado)-based producer and host Kathryn Ballard Shut (prn. /shoot/) and asked if she could record a podcast of all of the new jazz and soul that she was discovering in her musical life as owner of her jazz and soul agency, TIMKAT Entertainment.

However, since the show's launch on RKC on October 20, 2012, this tiny podcast has expanded to become a fan-favorite monthly show and has since picked up the syndicated support of 8 additional Internet radio stations, making it one of the Internet's best-kept secrets for listeners to discover world-class soul, R&B, acid jazz, funk, and all genres "jazzy". Together with RKC, the 8 partner stations that reserve a regular show slot around the world include Jazzy Soul Radio, 40 Foot Hole Studio, Soul City Radio, Stomp Radio, WDGP Radio, Urban Soul Radio, Shartnet Radio, and HOT FM Smooth Grooves, with plans to premiere soon on a tenth station, Smooth Soul Radio.

Ballard Shut, daughter of late soul music artist Tim Ballard, is herself a music industry producer, songwriter, jazz pianist, and former host of 80's station "RetroXana's Time Warp" (Live365), envisions Modern Soul Sauce to continue as a trusted source to highlight excellence in independent artistry. The show has already featured sounds from over 100 worldwide independent artists since its inception, commercial and fee-free.
In the course of the program, new and emerging jazz and soul artists such as Gregory Porter, Camera Soul, Tess Henley, American Idol's SuCh (Su Charles), Kenya (McGuire Johnson), Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, J.C. Brooks and the Uptown Sound, DeRobert and the Half-Truths, and many more stellar talents have been discovered and enjoyed, as well as shared for rotation among the show's radio partners for even greater airplay for the artists outside of show broadcasts. Some of these same artists have since been discovered on major broadcast networks such as Sirius-XM and BBC Radio.

Regarding the success formula for Modern Soul Sauce (#ModSoul on Twitter), Ballard Shut says, "This show is different than many conventional programs in that I don't play music from a listing based on whatever's hit an album sales chart. Instead of 'chasing after what's cool', I scout the Internet and industry contacts to trend-set what 'should be cool' - what's emerging from the independent underground -- and with that, I hope to help further careers of independent artists whose sounds are often lost in the shuffle."

The One Year Anniversary celebration of Modern Soul Sauce can be heard on the station that started it all, RKC, world-premiering on Sunday, October 13, 2013 and will encore on October 14 with live Twitter chat with Ballard Shut directly @modernsoulsauce. All artists, station listings, and times can be found at http://www.modernsoulsauce.com.

STRAIGHT NO CHASER - UNDER THE INFLUENCE: HOLIDAY EDITION FEATURES OTIS REDDING, PAUL MCCARTNEY

Atlantic Records recording group Straight No Chaser has announced the release of their new EP, "Under The Influence: Holiday Edition" The Yuletide-themed collection -- which follows the world renowned a cappella group's acclaimed new album, "Under The Influence" -- arrives everywhere October 29th.

"Under The Influence: Holiday Edition" sees Straight No Chaser bringing their indelible style -- and a number of legendary artists -- to an all-new cache of Christmas classics (see below tracklisting). Among the highlights are renditions of "Wonderful Christmastime (Feat. Paul McCartney)," "White Christmas (Feat. CeeLo Green)" and "Merry Christmas Baby (Feat. Otis Redding)," alongside new versions of favorites like "Amazing Grace."

As is tradition, Straight No Chaser will celebrate the holiday season with an extensive national touring schedule (see below itinerary). The dates -- which culminate with a New Year's Eve celebration at Mesa, Arizona's Mesa Arts Center -- can be found, alongside regularly updated ticket information, at www.sncmusic.com/tour. Caroline Glaser, a favorite from the past season of NBC's "The Voice," will open all dates.

Released earlier this year, "Under The Influence" sees Straight No Chaser reimagining a selection of their all time favorite songs alongside many of the superstar artists and undisputed music icons that made them famous. Produced by Mark Kibble -- a founding member of the legendary a cappella group Take 6 and one of Straight No Chaser's primary influences -- the album includes unprecedented collaborations with some of popular music's best and brightest -- including Phil Collins, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Dolly Parton, Rob Thomas, Seal, Sara Bareilles, and Jason Mraz -- as Straight No Chaser put their distinctive and inimitable spin on songs known and loved the world over.

"Under The Influence" has quickly won Straight No Chaser critical applause from all corners. Perez Hilton declared "I Won't Give Up (Feat. Jason Mraz)" to be an "intoxicating concoction," while Broadway World noted that "the tremendously talented ten men that make up Straight No Chaser are ideally matched by (Elton John)... especially memorable." "One a cappella group, Straight No Chaser, was way ahead of the trend," declared Entertainment Weekly, "and given their devoted fanbase and a caholics, it's likely that they'll be around long after (a cappella) fades out of the pop culture forefront -- if, in fact, it ever does."

PATRICE RUSHEN FUELS PLAYTHEGROOVE'S PARADIGN SHIFT IN MUSIC EDUCATION

Patrice Rushen, internationally renowned musician, composer, music director and chair of the University of Southern California’s Popular Music Program, joins the PlayTheGroove educational advisory team and endorses their new digital delivery system. She declares it "an effective & necessary tool for today’s aspiring musicians and teachers." Her endorsement recognizes the importance of PlayTheGroove’s mission to create a critical and necessary paradigm shift in music education.

The PTG advisory team also includes Chris Stevens, jazz educator at Long Beach Polytechnic High School and president of the California Alliance for Jazz; Aaron Kohen, jazz educator at Las Virgenes Unified School District; and Tony White, Coordinator for the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Beyond the Bell program.

This advisory team works diligently to make sure all PTG songs, music styles, charts and teacher methodologies are educationally sound while being exciting, engaging and challenging for middle, high school and college students to play. The advisory team also creates effective and detailed guidelines that introduce these modern, global styles while giving beneficial tips for teachers and students on the new material.

"This is not your average, common musical program," Rushen said. "PlayTheGroove allows all musicians to dive right in regardless of skill level, number of people in the band or orchestra & no matter how diverse instrumentation... it gets you to the music you love right away."

PlayTheGroove President and founder Richard Frank recognized the lack of modern world music in today’s schools and developed the site to address that void. "We’ve named our first signature product ‘PlayTheGroove Platinum Unison Chart’," he said, "because ‘standard’ is what everyone else does! Our charts are immensely flexible & work for any instrumentation or group size and they come with an expanded rhythm section at varying skill levels."

Frank also emphasizes the importance of unison charts when learning new music. "I’ve talked to high school seniors who have never played a melody on their instrument. These charts allow everyone to play the melody while learning about rhythm, phrasing, improvisation, theory and tone - all at the same time."

PlayTheGroove’s goals include music education integration such as in-school/on-site clinics and performance exposure. The company currently works with the nationally recognized USC Popular Music Program, utilizing students who are proficient in instrumental and vocal chart preparation. PTG has designed professional development presentations and is a part of Tony White's award-winning Beyond the Bell program. Together, they are introducing exciting contemporary world music styles & fresh handcrafted charts and learning modules directly to music programs of the Los Angeles Unified School District. A new force in music education, PlayTheGroove is forging similar partnerships & programs in other school districts.

Multi-Grammy nominated artist, Patrice Rushen, is fashioning her career after the legacy of her long-time friend and mentor, Quincy Jones. Composer... Producer... International Recording Artist... Rushen has definitely earned the respect she has been awarded by her peers in the music industry.

Rushen has amassed an impressive list of "firsts". She was the first woman to serve as Musical Director for the 46th, 47th & 48th Annual Grammy Awards, the first woman in 43 years to serve as Head Composer/Musical Director for television’s highest honor, the Emmy Awards, and the first woman Musical Director of the NAACP Image Awards, an honor she held for 12 consecutive years. Rushen has also been the only woman Musical Director/Composer for the Peoples Choice Awards and HBO’s Comic Relief. She was the only woman Musical Director/Conductor/Arranger for a late-night television talk show. The show was The Midnight Hour, which aired on CBS. In addition, Rushen was named the Musical Director/Composer for Newsweek’s first American Achievement Awards, broadcast from the Kennedy Center and she served as the Musical Director for Janet Jackson’s World Tour, "janet." As the Musical Director for the award shows, she composed and performed special musical tributes to such celebrities as Michael Landon, Ted Turner, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, The Temptations, James Garner and Leonard Bernstein. Rushen was named Composer in Residence during the August 2004 sessions at the Henry Mancini Institute.

PlayTheGroove’s mission is to create a necessary paradigm shift in music education by fine-tuning & expanding the tools required to teach & learn new music. It is a one-stop destination for the distribution of printable/digital PDF charts and mp3s in modern world music styles. In addition to professional, detailed lead sheets for all rhythm section-based instruments, the company includes group packs that have comprehensive parts, scores and guidelines a teacher needs for a school group of any size to perform the song. Ushering in a 21st century approach that allows new music from a broader, more diverse spectrum, PlayTheGroove is aiming to stimulate a cultural evolution in schools that mirrors the changing landscape of musical preferences, cultural heritage, demographics & unprecedented global access through digital tools. All songs, charts and teacher guidelines are edited and educationally approved through an elite team of professional music educators.

NEW RELEASES - RON CARTER, RED HOT + FELA, SHIRLEY SCOTT

RON CARTER – THE BASS AND I

A beautiful illustration of the strength of Ron Carter as a leader – that way he has of firmly directing a combo from the place of the bass, yet always in a subtle way that never overpowers the rest of the group! The balance here is wonderful – as Ron's tones really come through clearly in the mix, and soulfully set the tune from the start – yet the lead lines are often taken by the piano of Stephen Scott, who dances delightfully alongside the creative drum work of Lewis Nash – already a heck of a great player at this point in his career. Steve Kroon comes in with a bit of added percussion – but never too much – and titles include "Double Bass", "Mr Bow Tie", "Someday My Prince Will Come", "I Remember Clifford", and "Blues For DP". (SHMCD pressing.) ~ Dusty Groove

RED HOT + FELA (VARIOUS ARTISTS)

One of the hippest entries in the Red Hot series so far – a set of tracks dedicated to the legendary Fela Kuti – felled by AIDS after years of influential grooves – still being felt strongly by the rich array of artists collected in the set! Most tracks are contemporary, but feature a strong influence of the 70s modes of Fela's generation – those sharp percussive lines at the bottom of the tracks, soaring Afro-styled horn passages, and a righteous energy that really drives the whole thing all the way through! The package was put together in support of AIDS/HIV awareness, but is hardly an act of charity – as it's overflowing with great cuts that more than make the set stand as an Afro Funk collection on its own. Most tracks are remakes of older Fela numbers – and titles include "Buy Africa" by Baloiji & L'Orchestre De A Katuba, "Yellow Fever" by Spoek Mathambo & Zaki Ibrahim, ""Gentleman" by Just A Band & Baja, "Go Slow" by King, "Sorro Tears & blood" by Kronos Quartet & Kyp Malone, "Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am" by My Morning Jacket, "Afrodisco Beat 2013" by Tony Allen & M1, and Lady" by Tune Yards, ?uestlove, and Angelique Kidjo. ~ Dusty Groove

SHIRLEY SCOTT - SUPERSTITION

One of the coolest, grooviest albums ever from Hammond giant Shirley Scott – a set that's got a fair bit of funk in the mix, and a really rich array of inventive lines on the keyboards too! The tracks are longer than usual, and really step past the more familiar Shirley Scott modes of the 60s – opening up into more righteous 70s territory in the company of Chess/Cadet Records – with arrangements from Richard Evans that are as sophisticated as they are funky! Evans plays bass on the record – in a combo that also features both Jimmy Ponder and David Spinozza on guitar, Jimmy Owens and Art Hoyle on trumpets, and Grady Tate on drums. The album features some great drum breaks on Shirley's versions of "Superstition" and "Lady Madonna", and includes a totally great cover of "People Make The World Go Round", the killer originals "Hanky's Panky" and "Liberation Song", and a sweet take on "Last Tango In Paris". ~ Dusty Groove
