20 YEARS OF FREEDOM: HUGH MASEKELA & VUSI MAHLASELA TO TOUR NORTH AMERICA

Two of South Africa’s true freedom fighters and renowned musical icons come together to honor twenty years since the start of democracy in South Africa, and the official end of Apartheid. In a collaborative performance with a band, Hugh Masekela and Vusi Mahlasela will pay homage in 20 Years of Freedom: featuring South Africa’s Freedom Songs, including many of their own. While both artists have been like-minded musical comrades at home in South Africa for years and shared the stage on several occasions, this marks their debut tour joining forces together.  The dynamic show backed by their 5-piece all-star band features both artists collaborating together on stage for their entire show.  Their set will include many of their greatest songs from their respective catalogs.

Vusi Mahlasela, is simply known as ‘The Voice’ in his home-country, celebrated for his distinct, powerful voice and his poetic, optimistic lyrics. His songs of hope connect Apartheid-scarred South Africa with its promise for a better future. Raised in the Mamelodi Township, where he still resides, Vusi became a singer-songwriter and poet-activist at an early age teaching himself how to play guitar and later joining the Congress of South African Writers. After his popular debut on BMG Africa, When You Come Back, Vusi was asked to perform at Nelson Mandela’s inauguration in 1994. Vusi has shared the stage with Dave Matthews Band, Sting, Paul Simon, and Taj Mahal, among many others. Perhaps his biggest gig was in 2010 when he helped ring in the World Cup in South Africa, at Orlando Stadium in Soweto. Vusi has released seven studio albums to-date; his latest release is Sing to the People (ATO Records), a celebratory live recording looking back on twenty years since his first album.

Hugh Masekela is a world-renowned flugelhornist, trumpeter, bandleader, composer, singer and defiant political voice who remains deeply connected at home, while his international career sparkles. In 1968, his instrumental single ‘Grazin’ in the Grass’ went to Number One on the American pop charts and was a worldwide smash, elevating Hugh onto the international stage. His subsequent solo career has spanned 5 decades, during which time he has released over 40 albums (and been featured on countless more) and has worked with such diverse artists as Harry Belafonte, Dizzy Gillespie, The Byrds, Fela Kuti, Marvin Gaye, Herb Alpert, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder and the late Miriam Makeba. In 1990 Hugh returned home, following the unbanning of the ANC and the release of Nelson Mandela – an event anticipated in Hugh’s anti-apartheid anthem ‘Bring Home Nelson Mandela’ (1986) which had been a rallying cry around the world.

Don’t miss this opportunity to catch two living legends live during this historic tour!  Rolling Stone hails, “…Hugh Masekela is still one of the most thrilling live performers around,” while CNN states, “The legendary singer [Vusi Mahlasela] has been celebrated globally for his powerful vocals and universal message of freedom and human kindness.”

A retrospective album from fusion guitarist and composer Jerry De Villiers Jr is released on CD for the first time

Good things never get old and it is with great excitement that the new label Timeless Momentum launches a CD from Canadian guitarist and composer Jerry De Villiers Jr.

Jerry was heavily active in the Montreal jazz scene in the 1990s having performed and recorded with various musicians including Alain Caron and James Gelfand. Caron's first album alone made quite an impact around the world and De Villiers Jr became noticed as a unique player with an incredible sound and a highly melodic phrasing. During those years, Jerry was also busy composing, recording and performing his personal music under the project name of Turning Point.

Due to various circumstances, none of the music Jerry recorded in studio with Turning Point was ever released on CD. In the late 1990s Jerry took a few years to pursue opportunities in television and film scoring. He wrote and performed the music for the hugely popular theme song to the four time Emmy Award winning show Arthur, sung by Ziggy Marley and more recently by Chance the rapper. Jerry worked on and scored for movies such as Art of War, Screamers and Cause of Death, amongst others, and composed the award winning soundtrack to the popular Quebec blockbusters Les Boys.

Recently, Jerry has been slowly returning to his first passion of jazz fusion through collaborations with bass player and composer Antoine Fafard. Antoine's album projects have been featuring artists including Terry Bozzio, Jerry Goodman, Simon Phillips, Chad Wackerman and Dave Weckl. The album Ad Perpetuum released in 2014 with Vinnie Colaiuta on drums features Jerry in its entirety and includes guest appearances by Gerry Etkins and Gary Husband. More recordings with Fafard and Husband are in the works and due to be released sometime in 2015.

The music on The Turning Point Archives consists of seven studio tracks recorded during 1995 and another seven pieces captured live in 1994. On the live tracks, Jerry is supported by Magella Cormier on drums, Mathieu Cormier on bass and Gerry Etkins on keyboards, while the studio pieces include a collection of various collaborators.

The music that had been kept archived for 20 years is a gem that is still relevant now and will continue to be in the years to come.

BOB MARLEY HONORED WITH YEAR-LONG CELEBRATION FOR HIS 70TH BIRTHDAY

Bob Marley’s 70th birthday year (2015) will include a variety of releases and events to commemorate the legend, his work and iconic impact. Over the course of the year, his legacy will be remembered by new releases of rare and unreleased material as well as fan favorite deluxe editions of his most memorable work. The first release will be available on February 17. BOB MARLEY & THE WAILERS – EASY SKANKING IN BOSTON ’78, features two historic live shows from Boston’s Music Hall, June 8, 1978. This new and unreleased performance is from the Marley family giving unprecedented access for the first time to their personal material from their private collections and their vaults. The album will be available on blu-ray/cd combo pack as well as dvd/cd and standalone cd versions. Additional newly created animated material will also be a part of this release, marking the first time the family has incorporated this technology into any official Marley releases.

“But more than that, the album is a political and cultural nexus, drawing inspiration from the Third World and then giving voice to it the world over.”

The video footage was shot with a hand-held camera by a fan that Marley allowed to sit right in front of the stage. The result is remarkable imagery that captures Marley from just a few feet away, allowing one to experience the intimacy of his set. While the cinematographer was shooting with film and forced to change rolls of tape, the gaps in the live footage have been augmented with specially created animation over the existing audio. The animation video elements were produced and created by the animation team of S77 whose credits include recent projects for Bruno Mars, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Disney, ESPN and many others. The 46-minute video includes seven of the 13 songs in the full set.

Highlights of the performance include a lively “Jammin’” and “The Heathen,” a song Marley and the band didn’t perform during the second set. The show features them at their most comfortable, truly enjoying themselves in the spotlight, basking in the appreciation of the audience.

Marley, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, is notable not only as the man who put reggae on the global map, but, as a statesman in his native Jamaica, he famously brought together the country’s warring factions — symbolized by rival politicians Michael Manley and Edward Siega joining hands on-stage -- during his legendary “One Love Peace Concert” in Kingston, which took place on April 22, 1978, less than six weeks before this Music Hall performance in Boston. It was five years since Marley and the band arrived from Jamaica, with the 1977 release of EXODUS, recorded in London just after an assassination attempt on his life, turned into not just a socio-political statement, but one which included such hits as the title track, “Waiting In Vain” and “One Love,” paving the way for their next release Kaya and a world tour in ’78. Together with his music’s theme of liberation, Marley’s own rags-to-riches story brought inspiration to subjugated people around the world, where he was revered as a larger-than-life leader.

Today, Bob Marley remains one of the 20th century’s most important and influential entertainment icons. Marley’s lifestyle and music continue to inspire new generations as his legacy lives on through his music. In the digital era, he has the second-highest social media following of any posthumous celebrity, with the official Bob Marley Facebook page drawing more than 74 million fans, ranking it among the Top 20 of all Facebook pages and Top 10 among celebrity pages. Marley’s music catalog has sold millions of albums worldwide

Thirty years after its original release, Bob Marley & The Wailers’, LEGEND, shared the top of the charts, holding the No. 5 spot on Billboard’s 200 Album Chart among Maroon 5 (#1), Jeezy (#2), Guardians of the Galaxy Soundtrack (#3), and Ariana Grande (#4). LEGEND also holds the distinction of being the longest-charting album in the history of Billboard magazine’s Catalog Albums chart and remains the world’s best-selling reggae album. Marley’s accolades include inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1994) and ASCAP Songwriters Hall of Fame (2010), a GRAMMY® Lifetime Achievement Award (2001), multiple entries in the GRAMMY® Hall Of Fame, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (2001). Throughout history, no artist has so dominated the world of music as Bob Marley. A musical, political and even spiritual icon, a figure of almost mythical proportions, both poet and prophet, Marley was the first Jamaican artist to give voice to the struggles of his people and the Rastafarian culture, and the first to gain worldwide fame.

Today, Bob Marley remains one of the 20th century’s most important and influential entertainment icons. Marley’s lifestyle and music continue to inspire new generations around the world as his legacy lives on through his music. In the digital era, he has the second-highest social media following of any posthumous celebrity, with the official Bob Marley Facebook page drawing more than 74 million fans. Marley’s music catalog has sold millions of albums worldwide and his hits compilation, Legend, holds the distinction of being the longest-charting album in the history of Billboard magazine’s Catalog Albums chart and remains the world’s best-selling reggae album.

The Marley family will honor the legacy of Bob Marley commemorating his 70th birthday milestone and his importance in the history of global music with a year-long celebration.

UMe, a division of the Universal Music Group, will work closely with the Marley family for new unreleased material ensuring the highest possible quality, integrity and detail to honor the Marley legacy. The Marley family is also giving UMe unprecedented access for the first time to material from their private collections and their vaults. Releases will be announced throughout the year, sure to please longtime fans and collectors with rare and unearthed treasures, as well as Deluxe editions of key albums with bonus material. New material will highlight special treasures in both audio and video formats. The first release on the schedule is BOB MARLEY & THE WAILERS--EASY SKANKING IN BOSTON ’78. The new package, of completely unreleased material available for the first time in any format, will come in Blu-Ray/CD combo pack, dvd/cd and cd versions. The video was shot with a hand-held camera by a fan that Marley allowed to sit right in front of the stage. The result is remarkable footage that captures Marley from just a few feet away, allowing one to experience the intimacy of his set. While the cinematographer was shooting with film and needed to change rolls during the performance, the gaps in the live footage have been augmented with specially created animation over the existing audio. This also marks the first time they have approved newly created material, in this case animation, for a Marley release. The animation video was produced by Craig Bernard and Sara Mora Ivicevich; created and directed by S77 & Matt Reed and Michael Scroggins was the Oil Light Artist on the project. Between them, their resume includes recent projects including Bruno Mars, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers and many others.

Robert Nesta “Bob” Marley was born February 6, 1945 in Nine Mile, St. Ann Parish, Jamaica. Music was Marley’s escape and way to survive Trench Town, a government tenement housing project where he lived that was teeming with poverty and crime. One bright spot from Trench Town was another local, Alfarita “Rita” Constantia Anderson who he later married. He cut his first single, “Judge Not,” in 1962 when he was just 17. It turned out to be a local hit, and was followed by “One Cup of Coffee,” “Terror” and “Do You Still Love Me.” Although he earned very little money from his records, he ended up meeting Peter McIntosh (Peter Tosh), and together joined with childhood pal Neville Livingston (Bunny Wailer) to write songs together as The Wailing Wailers, named because they were ghetto sufferers who’d been born “wailing.” They debuted with “I’m Still Waiting” and its “rude boy” ska style follow-up, 1964’s “Simmer Down,” topped the Jamaican charts. Soon they would be known simply as the Wailers. A man who rose from the humblest of origins to become a champion for the oppressed, Marley was a streetwise sharp dresser influenced by the U.S. civil rights movement and the music and fashion of black America. He sang of rebellion, Rasta, partying, uprisings and love. Long before the world discovered him, both Bob Marley & The Wailers and Jamaica were grooving to rocksteady classics “Sugar Sugar” “Soul Shakedown Party,” and perhaps his deepest devotional track, “Selassie Is The Chapel.” Other classics included “Duppy Conqueror,” “Soul Almighty,” “My Cup,” “Trenchtown Rock” and “Small Axe.”

Marley knew that his music and reggae was just limited to Jamaica and set his eyes on the world. In order to break out of the Jamaican market and on his own, Marley moved to London and signed with CBS Records U.K. In 1971, Marley founded his own Tuff Gong label and was signed to Island Records by its leader Chris Blackwell, who had licensed some of his band’s previous releases for Island Records and offered Marley a deal to record their debut album, recording CATCH A FIRE at Harry J’s in Kingston. 1973’s CATCH A FIRE, their first album released outside Jamaica, signaled the emergence of reggae’s patron saint and immediately earned global acclaim, even garnering the group its first tour of the U.S. Reggae’s first true album, rather than a collection of singles, CATCH A FIRE included such well-known tracks as “Stir It Up,” “Concrete Jungle” and “Slave Driver”--all of them fiery, politically charged, and uncompromising.

The album BURNIN’ that same year launched the reggae anthems “I Shot The Sheriff” and “Get Up, Stand Up.” Eric Clapton’s #1 pop version of “I Shot The Sheriff” gave a major boost to reggae’s acceptance with the general public and to recognition for Marley, who some have called the first Third World superstar. But the album would be the last Wailers effort with Tosh and Livingston. By 1974, the original trio of Marley, Tosh and Livingston broke up, going their separate ways.

With a new backing band which included brothers Carlton and Aston “Family Man” Barrett on drums and bass, Junior Marvin and Al Anderson on lead guitar, Tyrone Downie and Earl “Wya” Lindo on keyboards, Alvin “Seeco” Patterson on percussion and the I-Threes (his wife Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt and Marcia Griffiths) on background vocals, Bob Marley and the Wailers hit their stride, achieving their first U.S. hit with “No Woman, No Cry,” from 1975’s NATTY DREAD. The album featured Marley’s name on top for the first time, and is considered by many to be his finest album and one of reggae’s best - balancing revolution and celebration like no other reggae album before or since.

Marley then followed it up with 1976’s RASTAMAN VIBRATION, which proved to be Marley’s American and commercial breakthrough, climbing to #8 on the Billboard 200. RASTAMAN VIBRATION paired hard-hitting tracks such as “War” (essentially a musical recitation of a speech by Haile Selassie, the Ethiopian emperor considered a prophet of Rastafarianism) with lighter fare such as “Positive Vibration.”

Bob Marley & The Wailers were declared Rolling Stone’s Band of the Year for 1976. “Marley, like Dylan, has transcended genre,” wrote the magazine. “You only have to see him on stage, a dancing dervish, dreadlocks wind-milling, to realize that here is a rock & roll star.”

Marley was becoming an international superstar, not just a pop music personality, but a political figure for the underclasses around the world, a lightning-rod for liberation in such songs as “Get Up, Stand Up,” “Exodus,” “Waiting in Vain,” “One Love,” “Zimbabwe,” “Africa Unite,” “Wake Up and Live” and “Survival.” The singer/songwriter was the target of an assassination attempt at his Kingston home on the night of December 3, 1976, during rehearsals for a free concert called Smile Jamaica. During this attempt, a bullet grazed his chest, wounding his wife and manager. A defiant Marley went on to perform at the show just two days later, his injuries visible to one and all, and it further solidified his heroic stature as a real leader of the people and his true commitment to his words “One Love.” The violence forced Marley to move to England for a two-year exile.

EXODUS would be Marley’s only album primarily recorded outside Jamaica; its London sessions were the first time the band recorded in the 24-track format. His exodus resulted in an album that was tough and reflective, angry and romantic, suitable for domestic consumption and for crossover success. Featuring the international hits “Jamming,” “Waiting In Vain” and “One Love/People Get Ready,” EXODUS was named Album of the Century by Time Magazine. “Every song is a classic, from the messages of love to the anthems of revolution,” Time wrote. “But more than that, the album is a political and cultural nexus, drawing inspiration from the Third World and then giving voice to it the world over.” The irony of EXODUS is that in leaving Jamaica, Marley brought reggae home to the rest of the world. Along the way, he popularized the innovative form known as “versions,” which separated out and spotlighted the instrumental rhythm tracks to reggae songs. Due to this process, reggae’s loping, hypnotic rhythms would find its way into rock ‘n’ roll.

Upon his return, and not one to give up his quest for peace, he famously brought together Jamaica’s warring factions, having political rivals Michael Manley and Edward Siega join hands with him on-stage during his historic “One Love Peace Concert” in Kingston, which took place on April 22, 1978. No bullets this time.

Shortly thereafter, Marley was awarded the United Nations’ Peace Medal of the Third World in June, 1978, by the African delegation for his efforts “on behalf of millions of disenfranchised blacks round the world.”

The mellow KAYA in early 1978 was highlighted by “Is This Love,” one of the most buoyant and unabashed love songs in the Marley repertoire, and “Satisfy My Soul.” BABYLON BY BUS, released later that year, is considered one of reggae’s most powerful concert albums. The fist-pumping SURVIVAL in 1979, with the track “Africa Unite,” was followed the next year by UPRISING, which featured the impassioned “Redemption Song.” Marley’s support for the struggles of Africans brought attention to their plight and he became an honored guest on that continent, including performing in 1980 at the celebration of Zimbabwe’s Independence Day.

Bob Marley stands as one of the giants of world popular music, with his untimely death at the age of 36 on May 11, 1981 in Miami from cancer complications, leaving us without one of the most revered and influential performers of the 20th century.

In 2014, thirty years after its original release, Bob Marley & The Wailers, LEGEND, shared the top of the charts, holding the No. 5 spot on Billboard’s 200 Album Chart among Maroon 5 (#1), Jeezy (#2), Guardians of the Galaxy Soundtrack (#3), and Ariana Grande (#4). His music was the centerpiece of a 2011 Grammy tribute by Bruno Mars, Sting, Rihanna and sons Damian and Ziggy Marley. In 2004, Rolling Stone placed Bob Marley #11 in its list of the “100 Greatest Artists of All Time,” and in 2012, an acclaimed feature-length documentary, Marley, directed by Kevin McDonald (The Last King of Scotland, State of Play) was released to critical and audience acclaim.

Bob Marley’s legacy truly lives in the artists and generations he has influenced. Today, the spiritual, political and musical resonance of Bob Marley’s work continues to be felt around the world.

SONNY ROLLINS – THE PRESTIGE YEARS

Theodore Walter "Sonny" Rollins, born September 7, 1930, remains one of the most influential and important American Jazz musicians of all time and is widely recognized as the finest tenor sax player in Jazz's long history. Although now well into his 80s, Rollins continues to perform and release new recordings. Rollins was born in New York City, to parents who were themselves born in the U S Virgin Islands. Rollins received his first saxophone at age 13, initially attracted to the jump and R&B sounds of performers like Louis Jordan, but soon he became drawn into the mainstream tenor sax tradition. Rollins began to make a name for himself in 1949 as he recorded with Johnson and Bud Powell what would later be called "hard bop", with Davis in 1951, with the Modern Jazz Quartet and with Monk in 1953, but the breakthrough arrived in 1954 when he recorded his famous compositions "Oleo", "Airegin" and "Doxy" with a quintet led by Miles Davis. Rollins was invited later in 1955 to join the Clifford Brown-Max Roach quintet. After Brown's death in 1956, Rollins continued to play with Roach and released his own albums on Prestige Records, Blue Note, Riverside, and the Los Angeles label Contemporary. His widely acclaimed album Saxophone Colossus was recorded on June 22, 1956, and included his best-known composition "St. Thomas". In 1956 he also recorded Tenor Madness, using Davis' group. The title track is the only recording of Rollins with John Coltrane, who was also in the group at this time. It was this musical titan's recordings made with Prestige 1953-1956 which established Sony Rollins as one amongst the finest Jazz players to grace the genre. This 5 CD set contains all 10 LPs Sonny Rollins made for Prestige Records, in their entirety, beginning with his collaboration with Theolonius Monk and The Modern Jazz Quartet, and moving through his classic works as leader of some of the finest Jazz combos ever to record together.~ Amazon

NEW RELEASES: AARON GOLDBERG - THE NOW; MARION MEADOWS - SOUL TRAVELER; RAY OBIEDO - THERE GOES THAT

AARON GOLDBERG – THE NOW

Hailed by Down Beat magazine for his quick-witted harmonic reflexes, fluid command of line and cut-to-the-chase sense of narrative logic, Aaron Goldberg has made his name as one of jazz s most compelling pianists, both as a bandleader and frequent collaborator with Joshua Redman, Wynton Marsalis, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Guillermo Klein and many more. On his new release The Now, Goldberg reunites with bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Eric Harland, the virtuoso rhythm team going all the way back to his 1998 debut Turning Point. On their fifth outing together, the trio foregrounds a central truth about the art of playing jazz: that no two performances will be the same because the music is created, in Goldberg s words, in the dynamic plane of the present.  A jazz record is literally one moment in time, Goldberg explains. Each song captures those five minutes, and not more. This is especially counterintuitive when you think about iconic jazz recordings like Kind of Blue, where we can all sing every solo. That record would sound totally different, we d all be singing different solos, if it d been recorded five minutes later or even five seconds later. That aspect of jazz is what makes it magical for me. I think every time you make an album you contribute to this illusion that jazz operates like other forms of music, where you figure out the song, you practice it, you play it a million times, then you record the definitive version. Jazz doesn t work like that, and I felt it was time to explicitly wrestle with this in some thematic way.  In every idiomatic zone from Brazilian ballads to roaring bebop, Goldberg and the trio have a way of spontaneously sculpting every bar as it flows by, like a wave on a river. That Rogers and Harland have also spent the last few years working with master saxophonist Charles Lloyd has deepened their communication and subtlety beyond measure. With Goldberg, they revel in the lesser-explored corners of jazz repertoire, bringing wit, explosive chops and also keen understatement to bear on the music at hand. ~ Amazon

Obiedo enlisted some of the music industries top musicians and longtime cohorts for the project. Percussionist Sheila E, drummer Peter Michael Escovedo, steel pan master Andy Narell, trumpeter Michael "Patches" Stewart and Tower of Power drummer David Garibaldi, all make brief appearances. Santana members David K. Mathews, Karl Perazzo, Jeff Cressman and Bill Ortiz contribute their expertise. Playing soprano sax on two tracks, "Werewolf" and "Four Square", is Miles Davis alumni Kenny Garrett. "There Goes That" also features Norbert Stachel, Elena Ayodele Pinderhughes, Marc & Paul van Wageningen, Roger Glenn, Michael Spiro, Peter Horvath, Stefen Kuehn and Sandy Cressman. Ray has 5 previous releases on the Windham Hill jazz label; this is his first on his own Oakland based Rhythmus Records label. The music on "There Goes That" is a highly energized and hypnotically rhythmic soundscape revealing all the passion, flavor, color and style of the San Francisco Bay Area which conceived, nourished and inspired Obiedo's latest musical venture. ~ Amazon

JUSTIN KAUFLIN - DEDICATION

Produced by Quincy Jones, Dedication is the Jazz Village debut by piano prodigy Justin Kauflin. The album features twelve original compositions by Kauflin. His style embodies - without being derivative - the ''quiet fire'' lyricism of Bill Evans (whom Kauflin credits as his ''biggest influence at age 14''), the nimble and mercurial qualities of Bud Powell, the genial melodiousness of Herbie Hancock and a bit of Dave Brubeck's gregarious percussiveness. Kauflin's side men on the album are Billy Williams on drums, Chris Smith on bass, Matt Stevens on guitar and Etan Haziza on nylon guitar. Kauflin is also the subject of the award-winning documentary Keep On Keepin' On, which chronicles his mentorship and friendship with the legendary musician and teacher Clark Terry. The film won Best New Documentary Director and the Heineken Audience Award at New York's prestigious Tribeca Film Festival and the Audience Award at the Boulder Film Festival. ~ Amazon

STEAM THEORY - ASUNDER

Steam Theory is a Baltimore Maryland based recording group and live band that plays around the Baltimore/D.C./VA/Philadelphia region. Asunder is their 3rd release, and most ambitious to date, attempting to combine different musical forms with a focus on melodic themes and variations.  The music is an instrumental combination of Jazz-Fusion, Classical music, Progressive Rock,  and World influences.  The album represents a different direction from 2012’s Helios Rider album, with a focus on larger arrangements incorporating heavy use of orchestral instrumentation, often in lieu of traditional keyboard parts, attempting to fuse several genres together. Their 2012 release Helios Rider earned a 14/16 rating from Progression Magazine, and was also nominated for 'Best Foreign Record 2012' by the Italian ProgAwards group.

Karla Harris Sings The Dave & Iola Brubeck Songbook

In her Summit Records debut, Karla Harris sings the Dave and Iola Brubeck songbook. Harris, a marvelous singer who gained a strong presence on the Pacific NW jazzscape after living for years in Portland, is poised to enter the national stage with this contemporary, respectful and musically innovative tribute. Not since a 1961 live recording of the Dave Brubeck Quartet with guest vocalist Carmen McRae has there been an album of vocal versions of this music, and no one has ever gone into the studio to record and release the Brubeck Songbook as a dedicated vocal project.

The project is the brainchild of Los Angeles-based producer, arranger and pianist Ted Howe, whose previous recordings include chart-topping tributes to Gershwin, Elton John and Ellington. Howe, a lifelong Brubeck fan who remembers the first time he heard the pianist in 1954 ("his playing floored me," he recalls) cites Brubeck as a major inspiration in his own career, and has long wanted to produce a vocal tribute of the composer's music.

Impressed with Harris after working with her at a 2013 concert he produced in Atlanta, Howe approached the singer with the idea.

"I loved the concept immediately. It was intriguing, to say the least," Harris says. "I had no idea words existed for so many of the songs Dave Brubeck composed or that Iola wrote so many of those lyrics. They've really gone largely undiscovered."

Work got off the ground when Howe, through the Brubeck estate, received a copy of a rare, out-of-print Dave Brubeck songbook published more than 30 years ago - a copy provided by Iola herself in early 2014 for this project, shortly before her passing.

"It felt like we were uncovering hidden treasure," Harris says of looking through the music for the first time. "There was as an opening verse to 'Strange Meadowlark,' for example, that we didn't know even existed. And there was Iola's name listed as lyricist on tune after tune, making it clear this songbook belonged to them both. Her words were sophisticated, filled with imagery and emotion; they changed my experience of some of these songs. I wanted to sing them very much."

Included among the 11 tracks on Karla Harris Sings the Dave and Iola Brubeck Songbook are several Brubeck classics along with a few less-known standouts, as well as some tunes from "The Real Ambassadors," a musical the couple wrote together in 1962.

Lyrics led the way as Howe created arrangements, opening some unexpected approaches in the process. For example, "In Your Own Sweet Way," traditionally played as a bright swing tune, here becomes something plaintive, taking its cue from Iola's surprisingly melancholy lyrics. "Take Five" melds a haunting new vamp with the classic Desmond progression to bring out what Harris calls "some frustrated longing" in those lyrics written by Iola and Dave.

The arrangements on Karla Harris Sings the Dave and Iola Brubeck Songbook are dynamic and a complement to Harris' singing, which is luminous and compelling throughout. She is joined by a group of masterful musicians who shine, collectively and individually - fitting for a tribute to a composer famous for instrumental hits. Howe, deft and fluid at the piano, is joined in the rhythm section by two players well known to contemporary jazz listeners - Modern Drummer Hall of Fame inductee Dave Weckl and internationally acclaimed bassist Tom Kennedy. The twin engine of Weckl and Kennedy, who have played together on various projects and tours for decades, powers beautifully and seamlessly the diverse feels among the tracks. Rounding out the group is L.A. session veteran Bob Sheppard adding alto sax to three of the 11 tracks with mesmerizing Desmond-esque flavor.

Throughout the recording, producer-arranger Howe honors Dave Brubeck's legacy. "This project was my way of saying thank you musically for his impact and for his influence on my own playing," Howe says. "I incorporated, in my own way, innovations Brubeck is associated with, such as polyrhythms, bi-tonalities and varied time signatures and styles, within a vehicle for Karla."

The result is a modern tribute that completely showcases Dave Brubeck's music hand-in-hand with the incredible lyrics of Iola Brubeck through the voice of newcomer Karla Harris.

With a brand-new album out this year (Worthy) co-produced by Joe Henry, Betty (now Bettye) LaVette is hotter than ever, easily one of our greatest living soul singers and still an irresistible artistic force. So, we thought the time was right to reissue this collection featuring her complete recordings for the Atco and Atlantic labels, which previously came out only in a hard-to-find limited edition. JOHNNY MATHIS - LIFE IS A SONG WORTH SINGING: THE COMPLETE THOM BELL SESSIONS

In 1973, Johnny Mathis boarded the love train with the destination of Philadelphia.  The velvet-voiced vocalist was already a music legend when he teamed with Thom Bell, architect of the Philadelphia soul sound via his groundbreaking work with The Delfonics, The Stylistics and The Spinners. The pairing of the smooth balladeer with the chart-topping R&B quadruple threat (producer-songwriter-arranger-conductor) might have seemed unlikely at first, but Mathis and Bell shared an elegant, sophisticated and romantic sensibility built on pop melodies and heartfelt soul.

Now, for the very first time, the complete collaborations of Johnny Mathis and Thom Bell are being collected on one 2-CD set.  Life Is a Song Worth Singing—The Complete Thom Bell Sessions, from Real Gone Music and its newly christened Second Disc Records imprint, celebrates one of the most fruitful partnerships in modern soul music by presenting both 1973’s I’m Coming Home album (featuring the No. 1 AC hit title track, the Top 10 AC hit “Life Is a Song Worth Singing” and Mathis’ own versions of The Stylistics’ favorites “I’m Stone in Love with You” and “Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart)”) and the worldwide CD premiere of 1977’s Mathis Is release (with the original version of “Loving You – Losing You,” a Top 30 AC hit for Mathis and later a Top 40 R&B hit for Phyllis Hyman).

This comprehensive collection of sweet Philly soul also adds a number of rare, never-on-CD single versions, two previously unreleased instrumental tracks showcasing Bell’s orchestral splendor, and five more silky Mathis renditions of Bell classics recorded between 1972 and 2008 including “Betcha by Golly Wow” and “You Make Me Feel Brand New.”  The Second Disc’s Joe Marchese has penned the liner notes for this collection, which has been freshly remastered by Sean Brennan at Sony’s Battery Studios.  Life Is a Song Worth Singing—The Complete Thom Bell Sessions sheds new light on an oft-overlooked collaboration between two of American popular song’s towering talents.  The collection will be released on March 10, 2015.

January 21 all-star concert planned to memorialize Jeff Golub and benefit his family sells out

When the newly blind guitarist Jeff Golub stumbled and fell onto New York City subway tracks where he was clipped and dragged by a train in 2012, New Yorkers came to his aid. When word spread throughout the New York City music community last month that Golub was on his death bed, New Yorkers bought concert tickets to the January 21 all-star benefit concert put together by Marquee Concerts and Smooth Jazz New York in order to raise money for Golub’s family. Although Golub succumbed to complications from a rare degenerative brain disease on New Year’s Day turning next week’s event at B.B. King’s Blues Club & Grill in Times Square into a memorial show, New Yorkers scooped up the remaining tickets to make sure the concert that will feature performances by more than two dozen luminaries sold-out to provide maximum assistance to Golub’s family.

At the time of the subway scare, which was chronicled extensively in the New York media, Golub dismissed the incident that he was lucky to escape with only minor scrapes and bruises as “stupid blind guy stuff.” However, losing his vision the year before due to collapsed optic nerves turned out to be a harbinger of a far more serious problem for the Akron, Ohio-born musician who has called New York City home since the 1970s. Golub began struggling with his balance and speech during a 2013 national concert tour in support of his final album, the playfully titled “Train Keeps A Rolling,” that adversely impacted his ability to perform. It got to the point that management had to pull Golub off the road. The guitarist’s motor skills continued to deteriorate, but it wasn’t until last November that he was finally diagnosed with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), an incurable and aggressive brain disease.

Known for playing with soulful intensity and a bluesy touch, Golub’s diverse resume boasts longtime stints as a sideman to Rod Stewart, Billy Squier, Peter Wolf and Tina Turner as well as a 20-year solo recording career as a chart-topping contemporary jazz artist thus the lineup for the memorial benefit concert will present a multi-genre lineup of Grammy winners, nominees and hit-makers. Slated to take the stage are (in alphabetical order) Mindi Abair, Rick Braun, Randy Brecker, Henry Butler, Christopher Cross, Mark Egan, Richard Elliot, Bill Evans, Steve Ferrone, Euge Groove, Dave Koz, Chuck Loeb, Chieli Minucci, Philippe Saisse, Kirk Whalum and over a dozen more musicians.

Last Thursday (January 8), Whalum presided over Golub’s funeral held at the New York Society for Ethical Culture where a throng of artists and the city’s busiest session players gathered to pay tribute to the late guitarist, his wife Audrey Stafford Golub, and sons Matthew (14) and Chris (12). Among the many performers filling the ceremony with heartfelt song were John Waite, Marc Cohn, Whalum and Cross.

Although tickets to the memorial concert are gone, those who wish to contribute to Golub’s family can by sending a check made out to Jeff Golub Medical Expenses and mailed to:

Judy Miller
PO Box 115
Boxford, MA 01921

NEW RELEASES: LUCKY BROWN - MYSTERY ROAD; MIKKO INNANEN / WILLIAM PARKER / ANDREW CYRILLE – SONG FOR A NEW DECADE; CHRIS POTTER UNDERGROUND ORCHESTRA – IMAGINARY CITIES

LUCKY BROWN – MYSTERY ROAD

Mystery Road pays homage to the great unknown musicians throughout america who, with their self-produced singles, became local and regional hits just around the time that megacorporations began saturating the market and the radio with something that was less like music, and more like a product. They, with profit as their goal, turned the radio into a marketplace, and turned music lovers into consumers. In only a few generations, the violent severance of our ties to the traditions of our ancestors represents a loss of cultural heritage and has thrust us into uncharted waters - a Mystery Road. For the last 7 years, Lucky Brown has been working with a label in Germany called Tramp. Tramp Records specializes in uncovering some of this great lost music, finding and interviewing the last living founders, and licensing the music in reprints of the 45s or for full-length compilations of never-before-heard studio material. Every other 45 released is an existing band that works within that framework. We are proud to say that Lucky Brown has a reputation worldwide for being one of the roughest. Today, Lucky Brown, in this follow up to his first Tramp album: "Lucky Brown's Space Dream," is realizing another dream - [releasing an album in the form of a series of singles - each with it's own unique artwork, independent bands and writing and recording sessions.] {a 2 LP set} entitled Mystery Road. The different band names are not intended to mislead, different people play together in each different group. Sometimes Lucky comes in with an idea, other times the group invents the music on the spot to suit the mood. All of this, coupled with Lucky's experimental and vernacular approach toward sound recording and you start to catch the vibe of Mystery Road.

MIKKO INNANEN / WILLIAM PARKER / ANDREW CYRILLE – SONG FOR A NEW DECADE

Finnish reedman Mikko Innanen works here with American jazz giants William Parker on bass and Andrew Cyrille on drums – but in setting that definitely has Mikko holding his own! Innanen plays alto, baritone, and other reed instruments – often with a style that's surprisingly soulful, and very spiritual – stepping out over the work of Cyrille and Parker with a quality that almost takes us back to the New York loft jazz years of the 70s! Parker really adds a lot of depth to the record on the first CD – then steps out to allow for interplay between Cyrille and Innanen on the second CD, which is the longer "Songs For This Decade" suite. Other titles include "The End Is A Beginning", "See You At 103", "Blue In Nublu", "Small & Big Steps", and "A Morning A Day A Night". ~ Dusty Groove

CHRIS POTTER UNDERGROUND ORCHESTRA – IMAGINARY CITIES

Beautiful sounds from reedman Chris Potter – working here with an expanded string lineup, although one that's more of a string quartet added to the core combo – and maybe not the full orchestra you'd guess from the cover! Still, those subtle strings really add a lot to the record – creating this sonic balance that's really sublime, even before Potter comes into the mix on either tenor, soprano, or bass clarinet, depending on the track – and the quartet often shades in the tunes with a gentle introduction, before more familiar Potter associates come in and deepen the sound – including Craig Taborn on piano, Steve Nelson on vibes and marimba, and Adam Rogers on guitar. Titles include "Firefly", "Sky", "Shadow Self", "Lament", and the extended "Imaginary Cities" suite.  ~ Dusty Groove

NEW RELEASES: JEAN CARNE - GIVE IT UP; MILFORD GRAVES / BILL LASWELL - SPACE / TIME - REDEMPTION; TILL BRONNER - THE MOVIE ALBUM

JEAN CARNE – GIVE IT UP

The great Jean Carne, still very much at the top of her game – and going strong at a level that none of her contemporaries from the old days could ever hope to match! Carne's an artist that we've loved for decades, and one who's continued to keep the soul and sophistication in her music, no matter what the setting – evolving over the years, yet never selling out or going for any sort of easy roads ahead. Instead, she's stayed very much her own person – a marvelous talent that shines strongly here in the company of producer Butch Ingram – who brings just the right mix of old school and contemporary styles to bear on the record, at a level that's similar to some of his other excellent Society Hill productions in recent years. Carne's jazz roots are still strong – as you'll hear especially on the album's version of Wayne Shorter's "Infant Eyes" – and guests include Don Ward and David Simmons, on other titles that include "She's All Alone", "Give It Up", "Everybody Knows", "Life Keeps Going On", "Come Home To Me", and "One Night Stand".  ~ Dusty Groove

MILFORD GRAVES / BILL LASWELL - SPACE / TIME - REDEMPTION

Bill Laswell returns to his roots – working here in a setting that's loose, open, and relatively improvised – as Bill's electric bass carves out these wonderfully spacious, tuneful lines alongside the drums and percussion of Milford Graves! Given all of Laswell's higher-concept and heavily-processed work over the years, we sometimes forget that at his core, he can still be a sensitive jazz musician – especially when working in the right setting, which definitely seems to be the case here. The tracks are long, but never meandering – and Bill's basswork not only grounds the record and gives it structure, but also seems to really set Graves free to open up in nicely complex ways. Titles include "Another Space", "Sonny Sharrock", "Eternal Signs", "Another Time", and "Autopossession".  ~ Dusty Groove

TILL BRONNER – THE MOVIE ALBUM

A beautiful setting for trumpeter Till Bronner – a set that has the German musician stepping out on a host of famous film themes, with backing from a larger orchestra that creates a wonderful backdrop for his solos! The style's very different than some of Bronner's more groove-oriented sets, and is a great reminder that he's also got an ear for deeper sounds and more expansive modes – yet still in a way that holds onto all of the soul in his horn. Chuck Loeb put the set together with Till, and also helped with the arrangements – as did Chris Walden, Nan Schwartz, and Jeff Lorber. The album features some guest appearances – including Everett Harp on tenor, Gregory Porter on vocals, Chuck Loeb on guitar, Arturo Sandoval on trumpet, Lizzy Cuesta on vocals, Joy Denalane on vocals, and Rick Braun on flugelhorn. Titles include "Moon River", "Forbidden Colours", "Run To You", "Love Theme From Cinema Paradiso", "Il Postino", "Mulholland Falls", "Happy", and "The Godfather Waltz". Japanese CD features the bonus "Deborah's Theme". (Limited Japanese SHM-CD edition.)  ~ Dusty Groove

NEW RELEASES: CALVIN KEYS – CLOSE ENOUGH FOR LOVE; STEPHANIE NICOLE - SOULUTIONARY ONE; WADADA LEO SMITH – THE GREAT LAKES SUITE

CALVIN KEYS – CLOSE ENOUGH FOR LOVE

Never-heard music from guitarist Calvin Keys – recorded in a number of different settings over the past decade or two, and issued here together to make for one of his most satisfying records in years! While we've liked the Wide Hive material Keys has recorded during his comeback, we're even more stunned by these tracks – as they've got an even more solid jazz basis overall – as Calvin plays in modes that run from group performances with varied artists who include pianist Elmer Gibson, tenorist Dawan Muhammad, and flute player Art Maxwell – to one solo number that shows an especially beautiful side of Key's music! The whole thing's put together wonderfully – not a scattered batch of tracks, but a record with a surprisingly unified feel – in the manner of the other excellent work we love on this label – and titles include "Emily", "The Last One To Be Loved", "Seems To Be", "Dolphin Dance"," Blues For Ahmed", and "Satchmo's Song".  ~ Dusty Groove

STEPHANIE NICOLE - SOULUTIONARY ONE

Soulutionary One is the long-awaited new album from singer/songwriter Stephanie Nicole. Ever since she dropped her Voices EP back in the spring of 2013, excited ripples have been circulating among the neo-soul cognoscenti about this California-based songstress, and she doesn’t disappoint with this fine set, once again reuniting her with co-producer /co-writer and soulmate Craig Perkins, a.k.a. Classroom Craig.

WADADA LEO SMITH – THE GREAT LAKES SUITE

Trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith works here with a hell of a lineup – Henry Threadgill on alto and flutes, John Lindberg on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – all soaring free on a double-length set of work dedicated to the great lakes! Despite the "suite" in the title, the work feels very loose and free – much more improvised than compositional – which is an especially nice setting for the reedwork of Threadgill, who somehow seems even more expressive than usual. DeJohnette is great too – and the album's a great reminder that he can still play with a hell of an edge, but in ways that also can have the soulfulness of his roots – and maybe not some of the more "arch" styles of some of his other recent work. Smith adds an extra lake to the lineup for the recording – and titles include "Lake Michigan", "Lake Ontario", "Lake Superior", "Lake Huron", "Lake Erie", and "Lake St Clair".  ~ Dusty Groove
