Mona Lissa Chanda’s “Professional Victim” Sets the Stage for Her Bold New Album Queen of Games
Montreal-based singer-songwriter Mona Lissa Chanda is gearing up to release her much-anticipated debut full-length album, Queen of Games, this spring. The lead single, “Professional Victim,” dropped on January 31, 2025, and it's already making waves with its infectious Motown groove and sharp commentary on boundary-setting and self-love.
With a voice that resonates with the emotional depth of icons like Amy Winehouse, Sade, and Tracy Chapman, Mona Lissa’s music blends timeless jazz, blues, and soul influences with catchy pop hooks. Her latest track is an unapologetic anthem for those who have learned the importance of putting their own needs first, especially after giving too much to people who take advantage of their kindness.
“Professional Victim” was inspired by Mona Lissa’s personal experiences with codependent relationships and her frustration with those who manipulate others for sympathy or control. The song offers a clever twist, blending heavy subject matter with humor, as seen in the playful music video where Mona Lissa triumphs over a manipulative partner in a satisfying, poetic ending.
Produced by Paul Cargnello, who also co-composed and performed on the track, "Professional Victim" is a perfect preview of Queen of Games, which showcases Mona Lissa’s love for blues-rock, soul, R&B, and Americana. The album promises to be a timeless collection of songs that will transport listeners to the golden age of vinyl, with fresh and captivating melodies.
Mona Lissa’s creative journey is just as unique as her music. Raised in the culturally rich environment of Sept-Îles, Quebec, she has an educational background in fine art and neurosciences, in addition to training in vocal jazz and Italian Bel Canto singing. Her eclectic upbringing, which included immersion in French Canadian culture and the musical treasures of Europe and Asia, has deeply influenced her artistry. In fact, Mona Lissa’s scientific background includes research on the neurochemistry of music, conducted under the mentorship of Dr. Daniel J. Levitin, a renowned neuroscientist and best-selling author.
With Queen of Games on the horizon, Mona Lissa is ready to shine brighter than ever. The album’s launch party is set for April 12 at Casa Del Popolo in Montreal, QC.
Lee’s Musical Journey: From Hip-Hop Roots to Global Soundscapes with The Reprieve
Lee, a gifted musician from Clewiston, FL, has spent decades honing his craft and evolving into one of the most unique voices in contemporary music. His career began in the 1990s as part of the dynamic hip-hop duo Straight Coffee For George, alongside his longtime friend Antonio “T-Lyfe” Humphrey. The pair quickly gained recognition in the local scene for their innovative sound and thought-provoking lyrics. As Straight Coffee For George, Lee learned the ropes of the music industry, developing a distinct style that blended the raw energy of hip-hop with thoughtful musical arrangements.
After the duo disbanded, Lee sought new creative directions, forming The Square Egg, a collective known for its eclectic fusion of hip-hop, funk, jazz, and soul. The group gained traction not just in Florida, but in New York as well, where Lee would ultimately spend much of his musical life. In New York, Lee’s career took a new turn. He began performing in some of the city’s most prestigious venues, drawing crowds with his electrifying stage presence and his ability to seamlessly mix genres.
As a solo artist, Lee’s sound continued to evolve, creating music that is both expansive and intimate. His solo debut, Naked (2010), was a testament to his ability to blend influences from around the world while staying true to his own soul-driven sound. He followed that with Reasons To Buy This Album (2014) and 2+2=5 (2017), both of which earned him acclaim for their depth and musical complexity.
In 2022, Lee released Maybe Now, an album that marked a profound shift in his sound. Deeply influenced by his life in Buenos Aires, the album infused rich Latin rhythms and textures into his already diverse musical palette. The lush arrangements and layered vocals on Maybe Now demonstrated Lee’s growing mastery of blending genres and cultures, further solidifying his reputation as a boundary-pushing artist.
Now, with his latest release, The Reprieve, Lee has once again raised the bar. The album is his most ambitious to date, featuring a dizzying array of world-class musicians, each adding their unique voices to Lee’s adventurous and soulful compositions. The album was organically recorded at LeChateau Studio and Aguaribay Espacio Musical in Buenos Aires, Argentina, capturing the raw energy and collaborative spirit of the session. The result is an album that feels as much like a global celebration as it does an intimate reflection of Lee’s artistic vision.
One of the standout tracks from The Reprieve is the sublime “Perfect,” a song that perfectly encapsulates Lee’s musical versatility. The track is featured here in its original album version, along with three exclusive mixes that offer new takes on the song’s haunting melodies and soulful grooves. Each mix provides a fresh perspective, showcasing Lee’s ability to experiment with sounds while maintaining the emotional depth and complexity that is central to his artistry.
As Lee continues to evolve and explore new sonic territories, The Reprieve stands as a testament to his journey—one that has taken him from the hip-hop underground to the farthest reaches of the global music scene. With this album, Lee proves that he is not just a musician, but an artist who continues to push boundaries and redefine what it means to create truly genre-defying music.
Peter White’s Light of Day: A Musical Journey of Hope, Optimism, and Reflection
Peter White, the celebrated genre-defying acoustic guitarist, is back with his 17th album, Light of Day, releasing February 14 via Lobster Music Inc. After a six-year hiatus, the new record marks a triumphant return for the multi-time Billboard chart-topper. This collection of ten songs explores themes of hope, resilience, and optimism, offering an antidote to the darkness brought on by the pandemic. The album also coincides with two major milestones in White’s career: his 50th anniversary as a professional musician and the 35th anniversary of his debut album, Réveillez-vous.
Known for his fingerstyle guitar work, White’s unique sound blends elements of pop, Latin, R&B, and jazz with his signature expressive lyricism. On Light of Day, however, he delves deeper into introspective territory, tackling weightier themes with an authenticity that reflects the global challenges of recent years.
"I chose the title Light of Day because it symbolizes hope," says White, who plays guitar, bass, keyboards, accordion, recorder, and handles much of the programming on the album. "Through the darkness, there is always light, and better times ahead."
The album opens with the vibrant "Catalonia," an energetic piece inspired by the northeastern region of Spain. The single is already gaining momentum, with radio and playlist support. The international flair continues with “Cityscape,” a song inspired by White’s memories of walking through London on a warm summer night. Other tracks, like "Carefree," feature playful basslines and whimsical melodies, while the poignant "Till I See You Again" is a tribute to the late jazz guitarist Nick Colionne.
Other highlights include the energetic “Overdrive,” featuring harmonica from Marc Macisso and trumpet by Ilya Serov, and the romantic “I Love You Still,” which features rising saxophone star Vincent Ingala. The album also includes a bold eight-minute journey, "Odyssey," featuring White’s longtime collaborators Eric Valentine (drums) and Nate Phillips (bass), as well as the beautifully composed "Enchanted," which includes a stunning saxophone solo by two-time GRAMMY-winning legend Ernie Watts.
The album closes with the title track, “Light of Day,” a final affirmation of hope, determination, and the belief that better days are ahead.
Peter White’s Light of Day isn’t just a musical project—it’s a celebration of life, love, and the strength to persevere through challenging times. Fans can also look forward to hearing these new songs live, as White embarks on a global tour, including dates in South Africa, Namibia, the Netherlands, the UK, and across the U.S.

Chicago Baritone Saxophonist Jimmy Farace Announces Debut Album Hours Fly, Flowers Die – A Profound Jazz Journey
Chicago-based baritone saxophonist and composer Jimmy Farace is set to release his highly anticipated debut album Hours Fly, Flowers Die on April 11, 2025, via Shifting Paradigm Records. Produced by the talented Greg Ward, this remarkable work features a star-studded ensemble including Farace himself on baritone sax, Kenny Reichert on guitar, Julius Tucker on piano, Clark Sommers on bass, Dana Hall on drums, and the KAIA String Quartet: Victoria Moreira, Naomi Culp, Susan Bengtson Price, and Hope Shepherd Decelle.
Hours Fly, Flowers Die marks an exciting milestone in Farace’s career, showcasing his maturity as both a composer and improviser. With a perfect blend of jazz standards, original compositions, and innovative arrangements, the album offers listeners a dynamic listening experience—a narrative centered around the themes of time, nostalgia, and personal growth. The title of the album, drawn from the timeless poem "For Katrina’s Sundial" by Henry Van Dyke, encapsulates the fleeting nature of life, encouraging listeners to reflect on the delicate balance between holding onto the present and letting go.
A True Artistic Statement
Hours Fly, Flowers Die isn’t just an album—it's a complete artistic statement from a young artist who has honed his craft through years of dedication and study. Farace’s compositions are deeply personal and introspective, weaving a tapestry of moods ranging from contemplative ballads to high-energy swingers, avant-garde moments, and cinematic jazz. Highlights include the melodic beauty of tracks like "My Ship" and "Prophetic Dreams," as well as the exuberant swing of "Directionally Challenged."
Jazz legends and fellow musicians have praised Farace's work, with Gary Smulyan calling the album “timeless and immensely beautiful,” and Paul Nedzela noting that Farace “has found his own voice and approach” on the baritone sax. Walter Smith III adds, “Farace’s playing and writing demand the attention of a wide audience,” and it’s clear why: Farace’s sound is at once rich in tradition and refreshingly new.
A Powerful Collaboration with The KAIA String Quartet
One of the most distinctive features of Hours Fly, Flowers Die is the seamless integration of The KAIA String Quartet. Farace’s innovative approach to incorporating strings into his compositions adds depth and beauty to the album, creating a symbiotic relationship between the baritone sax and the quartet’s lush textures. As Dr. Michael Allemana writes in the liner notes, “The strings glisten harmonies and counterpoint with Farace’s lyricism, generating heartfelt performances throughout.” This organic fusion of jazz and classical elements is a masterstroke and an exciting new direction for modern jazz.
A Stellar Rhythm Section
The album’s rhythm section is nothing short of stellar. Clark Sommers on bass and Dana Hall on drums form the backbone of the record, providing impeccable support and energy to Farace’s compositions. The young pianist Julius Tucker’s contribution is equally impressive, adding sensitivity and technical prowess to the project. Guitarist Kenny Reichert rounds out the ensemble, bringing both melodic accompaniment and dynamic solos that complement the overall sound.
A Journey of Growth and Reflection
Farace’s intellectual and artistic growth is evident throughout Hours Fly, Flowers Die. Dr. Allemana notes that Farace’s academic background and passion for jazz history inform his approach to music, giving the album a sense of maturity and sophistication. Farace’s exploration of time and personal growth is not just a thematic exploration—it’s a reflection of his own journey as an artist and as a human being. As Farace explains, the music reflects “the essence of fleeting moments, the bittersweet nature of nostalgia, and the universal struggle to hold onto the ephemeral present.”
Fans of modern jazz will find much to love in Hours Fly, Flowers Die. Whether you're drawn to the emotional depth of Farace's baritone playing, the innovative string arrangements, or the overall artistry of the album, this debut release is sure to resonate with anyone who appreciates music that tells a meaningful story.
Jeff Goldblum's Still Blooming: A Star-Studded Jazz Album That Celebrates His Unwavering Passion for Music
Cédric Hanriot Unveils 'Time is Color Vol. 2' – A Journey Through Jazz, Hip-Hop, and Spiritual Exploration
Time is Color Vol. 2 is the new body of work from the versatile polymath Cédric Hanriot. A key contributor to multiple GRAMMY-winning projects, collaborating with luminaries such as Herbie Hancock, Robert Glasper and Terri Lyne Carrington to name just a few, Hanriot has developed a reputation as an in-demand pianist, sound designer, composer and arranger, drafted in to provide unique enhancements to a truly diverse range of successful musical projects.
Now with Time is Color Vol.2, he presents his artistry in its most sincere form: an evolution from his original Time Is Color project released in 2022, which received universal praise, even ending up on former US President Barack Obama’s infamous summer Spotify playlist that year.
The roots of Hanriot’s new work flourish within the modern jazz idiom. Tracks on the album such as “Comforting Glow” carry echoes of Bill Evans, while other songs embrace hip-hop, funk, soul and electronica. “A Luminous World Part 2” is a high-impact number featuring US vocalist Tony Moreau, while “Ego Chase” features head-nod verses from renowned UK saxophonist and rapper Soweto Kinch.
Further wordplay is contributed by American MC’s JSWISS and Charles X, while saxophonist and singer Braxton Cook adds some sweet soul vibes to proceedings. More magic is created on “La Source” and “La Barque Du Temps” via French narrations from Arthur H and Cyrielle Clair, while Swiss trumpeter Erik Truffaz (Blue Note), provides a great top line on “A Luminous World Part 1.” With outstanding contributions from each special guest, not to mention excellent performances from Hanriot’s core trio of Bertrand Beruard on bass and Antonin Violot on drums, the album is woven together by Hanriot’s phenomenal ability on piano, Fender Rhodes and analog synths.
“In recent years, I have explored my spirituality in greater depth, thanks to numerous encounters, books, happy and unhappy experiences but also reflections,” Hanriot says. “For some time now, quantum physics has been shedding scientific light on some of life's mystical phenomena. My belief is that quantum physics and spirituality are not antagonistic in nature, but rather speak of the same thing, a synchronized tautology of sorts, thus it became a critical catalyst for this album. We are Energy, Music is Energy and Life is magic!
“This album is dedicated to all the people who have enlightened me and continue to enlighten me on my spiritual path. I hope the music and vibrations on this album will resonate and bring you the best energies.”
Time is Color Vol.2 traverses many different paths, venturing into to unexplored territory and undoubtedly placing Hanriot in position as one of the most exciting and talented musicians working around the world today. The proof is in the listening.

Dave Lee & Maurissa Rose’s ‘London / Detroit’ Brings Soulful Synergy Across the Atlantic
For over 35 years, Dave Lee has continually sought out fresh voices and collaborations, building a rich legacy with iconic artists like Thelma Houston, Seal, Dianne Charlemagne, and Taka Boom. His latest musical partnership with Detroit's Maurissa Rose has resulted in the album London / Detroit, a stunning collection of Soul, Disco, and R&B tracks, seasoned with a touch of Soulful House.
The connection began when Dave first heard Maurissa's voice on a Theo Parrish track. After some phone calls and mp3 exchanges, they decided that working together in person would be far more rewarding than remote collaborations. In March 2022, Maurissa traveled from Detroit to London to write and record the album at Dave’s studio. This face-to-face approach proved to be the key to their creative process, resulting in 11 original songs and one cover that blend their shared love for classic and contemporary soul.
For Dave, London / Detroit is particularly special as it marks the first time he’s recorded an entire album with the same vocalist throughout. In the album’s liner notes, he describes Maurissa as a naturally creative, warm, and unpretentious artist, with her effortless vocal delivery perfectly complementing his intricate, passion-driven production. Dave’s vast expertise in Soul, Funk, and Disco shines through the album’s diverse styles—from the street soul vibes of “You Decide” to the disco flavors of “I Feel the Sun,” and the deep, bass-driven groove of “You’re Giving Me Life.”
With London / Detroit, Dave Lee proves that great music is ageless and boundless, and that creative synergy can bridge even the widest of distances.

The 3 Cohens: A Family Bond Through Jazz
The all-star family jazz trio, The 3 Cohens—comprising Anat Cohen (clarinet), Avishai Cohen (trumpet), and Yuval Cohen (soprano saxophone)—has always found time to reunite despite their individual successes as soloists and bandleaders. Growing up in Tel Aviv, the siblings developed an innate musical connection, making improvisation a natural part of their interplay. Over a decade, they released four studio albums: One (2003), Braid (2007), Family (2011), and Tightrope (2013), with the latter three released under Anzic Records, the label Anat co-founded with producer Oded Lev-Ari. Their chemistry was so remarkable that DownBeat featured them on its January 2012 cover, praising their "alchemy, telepathy, and chemistry."
A decade later, The 3 Cohens reunited for a special collaboration with Germany’s esteemed WDR Big Band, an ensemble with a storied history of performing jazz since 1957. This partnership, featuring arrangements by Lev-Ari of compositions by each Cohen sibling, along with fresh renditions of Gerry Mulligan’s "Festive Minor" and Louis Armstrong’s "Tiger Rag," resulted in the live album Interaction. This energetic and swinging performance, recorded at the Kölner Philharmonie in June 2022, will be released digitally and on CD by Anzic Records on March 14, 2025.
Individual Achievements and a Shared Legacy
The New York Times has lauded The 3 Cohens for their "family sound" and intuitive musical interplay while celebrating their individual strengths: Anat’s warm and expressive clarinet, Avishai’s masterful command of bebop and avant-garde trumpet, and Yuval’s rich and fluid soprano saxophone. Each has made remarkable strides in their respective careers. Anat, a multiple Grammy nominee, has been recognized for her Brazilian collaborations and her acclaimed Tentet album Triple Helix. She will be featured on DownBeat’s March 2025 cover, coinciding with special performances at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Avishai, now a leading ECM artist, has released six albums on the prestigious label, including Ashes to Gold (2024). Meanwhile, Yuval, an award-winning educator in Israel, will debut his first ECM release, Winter Poems, in February 2025.
Journey Across Continents
As a sextet, The 3 Cohens have toured extensively, from the U.S. and Europe to Brazil and Australia, selling out venues such as New York’s Village Vanguard, Vienna’s Konzerthaus, and headlining major festivals like Newport Jazz Festival and Jazz à la Villette. All About Jazz captured their dynamic, sibling-driven performances, highlighting their playful rivalries and deep musical synergy, stating, "The sextet offers fresh, modern jazz full of energy, daring, and emotion."
Their last studio album, Tightrope, featured jazz luminaries like bassist Christian McBride and pianist Fred Hersch. However, some of its most captivating moments came from The 3 Cohens performing as a horn trio, showcasing their ability to “talk without talking,” as Anat describes it. Their deep-rooted musical bond allows them to communicate effortlessly onstage, often without needing visual cues.
The WDR Big Band Collaboration: A Musical Fusion
The Interaction album captures The 3 Cohens alongside the WDR Big Band under the direction of Oded Lev-Ari. The performance includes standout pieces like Lev-Ari’s "Trills and Thrills," Avishai’s moving ballad suite "Naked Truth," Anat’s rhythmically charged "Footsteps & Smiles," and Yuval’s lively "Catch of the Day." The trio’s a cappella horn rendition of "Festive Minor" further underscores their exceptional synergy.
Reflecting on the collaboration, Yuval explains, "The way we play together is as natural as eating or laughing together. Even after a decade apart, that special magic remains from the first note to the last." Having grown up playing in big bands, each Cohen sibling felt at home within the WDR ensemble. Anat adds, "The WDR musicians are exceptional, with many doubling on multiple instruments. Oded’s arrangements allowed us to blend seamlessly while keeping our distinct voices."
Beyond the Music: A Personal Reunion
For Avishai, the project was more than a musical endeavor—it was a chance for the siblings to reconnect on a personal level. "In Germany, we had time to talk face to face about our childhood, our parents, and our lives. It was freeing, and I believe that feeling made its way into the music in the best way. Playing with the WDR ensemble felt like coming full circle, bringing back memories of when we first played in big bands as kids."
The timing of the concert, soon after the world began reopening post-pandemic, added to its significance. "Performing for a live audience again was exhilarating," Anat recalls. "The Kölner Philharmonie was packed, and you could feel the crowd’s energy building with each song. That kind of interaction—sharing music and emotions with people we love and an engaged audience—is something we never take for granted. I hope listeners can feel that same joy when they hear the album."
With Interaction, The 3 Cohens reaffirm their extraordinary sibling connection, seamlessly blending past experiences with fresh musical perspectives. This latest chapter in their journey showcases not only their individual artistry but also their unparalleled synergy as a family united by jazz.
Branford Marsalis Reimagines Keith Jarrett’s Belonging in His Blue Note Records Debut
Renowned saxophonist Branford Marsalis, one of jazz’s most influential artists, is set to make his highly anticipated Blue Note Records debut with Belonging, releasing on March 28. The album is a full-length interpretation of Keith Jarrett’s groundbreaking 1974 ECM recording of the same name, originally introducing the pianist’s European Quartet. This marks Marsalis’ first new release since 2019 with his celebrated longstanding quartet—pianist Joey Calderazzo, bassist Eric Revis, and drummer Justin Faulkner. The lead track, “Spiral Dance,” is now available for streaming and download.
A Personal Journey into Belonging
Marsalis recalls that in 1974, when Belonging first came out, his musical interests lay elsewhere. “I was a freshman in high school, listening to R&B,” he admits. “I didn’t even know Belonging existed.” That changed when he deepened his jazz studies. Initially familiar only with Jarrett’s solo piano works, Marsalis was introduced to the European Quartet’s sound by pianist Kenny Kirkland. “We were on a plane in the ’80s when Kenny put his headphones on my ears and played [Jarrett’s 1979 album] My Song,” he recalls. “When he tried to take them back after five minutes, I slapped his hand away. When we got to the next city, I bought every album by that band.”
The idea to record Belonging in full took root while preparing their 2019 album, The Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul, which featured “The Windup” from Belonging. “We were all listening to ‘The Windup’ for the last record, and Revis suggested we record the whole album—it’s just that great, and we could really do something special with it.” When the pandemic delayed their plans, the group reconvened with the same enthusiasm once it ended.
Honoring the Original, Without Imitation
Marsalis’ approach to Belonging follows his philosophy on reinterpreting jazz classics, as he has done with works by Charles Mingus, the Modern Jazz Quartet, and John Coltrane. “On the composition ‘Belonging,’ I naturally played some of the things Jan Garbarek did on the original,” he says. “But we never intended to make a tribute album. I always focus on the entire record, not just the saxophone parts, and the most striking thing about Belonging is how seamlessly it all fits together.”
Unlike Jarrett’s European Quartet, which came together for the first time in the Belonging sessions, the Branford Marsalis Quartet has a long-established rapport. With Revis joining in 1996, Calderazzo in 1999, and Faulkner in 2009, their deep musical chemistry allows for an unparalleled level of interplay. “The biggest advantage we have is 50 years of history and experience that Keith’s band didn’t have at the time. We’ve been able to absorb and process all of that.”
Marsalis sees his group as more akin to a chamber ensemble than a traditional jazz band. “The whole purpose of this group is to create a level of cohesion and interplay that feels organic,” he explains. “At the end of the day, what any audience wants is a great melody and a compelling rhythm. No matter where our journey takes us, as long as we keep that essence, people will come along for the ride.”
The Branford Marsalis Quartet will embark on an extensive North American and European tour in the coming months. Visit branfordmarsalis.com for tour details and upcoming announcements.

Saxophonist Chase Huna Sets the Stage for Jazz Evolution with “Just Right” Single and Upcoming Album “Heart and Soul
As a teenager, saxophonist Chase Huna made records under the tutelage of two-time GRAMMY winner Paul Brown and Billboard chart-topper Steve Oliver, learning how to produce and focus on developing his songwriting skills. He’s also shared the stage with contemporary jazz royalty over the last decade. Having cultivated his talents in and out of the studio, now at age 25, Huna feels that the time is right to take the next step as a young emerging artist on the contemporary jazz scene. On February 10, he’ll release “Just Right” as a single to preview his forthcoming “Heart and Soul” album, which he plans to release this summer on Mirage Records.
Huna wrote and produced “Just Right,” a deep pocketed R&B groove constructed by bassist Darryl Williams and drummer Gorden Campbell. Keyboardist Carnell Harrell adds melodic shading that buttresses Huna’s tenor sax. Throughout the track, Huna’s impassioned play exhibits maturity and restraint. His horn work is cool and confident, soulful and sultry.
“I’ve always felt that rhythm lives inside of me. One of my favorite ways to feel that is for me to play it out onstage or write it out in the studio. I knew there was something special about this song when I felt the need to dance to it in my studio every chance I got. I selected the song title thinking that every piece of this recording, from the saxes and instrumentation to writing the best song I could, had to be ‘just right,’” said the Palm Springs, California-born and bred Huna.
“Heart and Soul” will be Huna’s fourth album and he’s crafting the collection with the intention of injecting a jolt of fresh energy, youth, and creativity into jazz. The set will showcase his amalgam of R&B, jazz, pop, and soul. Huna’s focus is on the song, serving and nurturing each one while exploring the unique nuance of every harmony and melody that make up his compositions.
"This new album is so special to me, and I feel that the title says it all. It’s been a fulfilling experience writing and recording every song on this project and it all truly comes from the heart. I’m excited to share the new music. My hope is to share my passion and convey the same feeling I have when playing music with anyone who appreciates the joy music brings,” said Huna.
At fifteen, Huna released his Oliver-produced debut single, “On The Chase.” The cut ended up serving as the title track to Huna’s debut album, which dropped in 2017. A year later, Brown helmed Huna’s third single, “U Best Believe.” During those formative years, Huna focused on learning the art of record production. His first self-produced disc, “Life of the Party,” released in 2020 followed a year later by “Life of the Party Volume II.” Both projects spawned radio singles and airplay, which helped Huna’s audience multiply. The saxman continued to keep the company of genre stars by performing with Peter White, Rick Braun, Marc Antoine, Brian Simpson, and Eric Darius, and hit the stage at the Newport Beach Jazz Festival, Catalina JazzTrax Festival, and Brian Culbertson’s Napa Valley Jazz Getaway.
Outside of jazz, Huna frequently performs alongside folk/rock singer-songwriters Al Stewart, Ambrosia, John Ford Coley, and Walter Egan.

Tony Holiday Revives Memphis Soul-Blues with a Genre-Bending New Album, Keep Your Head Up
Tony Holiday has been at the center of a Memphis soul-blues revival anchored by a contingent of young, savvy, well-schooled musicians with a "family-like" attitude and a strong belief in one another.
Over the past couple of years, Holiday has been touring hard, taking spells in between to write and record with Producer Eric Corne in Memphis and Los Angeles. The result is the forthcoming album, Keep Your Head Up, out April 18, 2025, via Forty Below Records. Pre-order here. The album demonstrates an impressive command of styles, as Holiday leads his band fluidly through Texas, Chicago, and hill country blues with plenty of Memphis soul and even a touch of Afrobeat.
The album features a wide array of special guests, including Eddie 9V, Kevin Burt, Albert Castiglia, and Laura Chavez, last year's Blues Music Award winner for 'Guitarist of the Year' with Holiday shining throughout on vocals and harmonica.
The latest single, "Walk on the Water," was a surprise addition to the record. Another knock-out song by Eric Corne that was inspirational. "I think Walk On The Water will pleasantly surprise people as much as it surprised me." Pre-save here.
The album opens with the Freddie King classic "She's A Burglar," a gripping Texas Blues featuring good pal Eddie 9V on lead guitar and sharing vocal duties. Next is the intense Chicago blues-flavored "Twist My Fate," written by Corne, featuring Holiday's stellar harmonica work and shared vocal duties from the incomparable Kevin Burt.
Holiday and Corne turn "A Woman Named Trouble" on its head with a fascinating Afrobeat flavor, including a riveting trumpet solo by occasional E Streeter Mark Pender before locking into some greasy Memphis soul compliments of regular collaborator AJ Fullerton on "Good Times."
Laura Chavez, last year's Blues Music Award winner for 'Guitarist of the Year' turns in a fabulous performance on the soulful, horn-laden "Shoulda Known Better" before the album shifts to a modern take on hill country blues with "Walk On The Water," written by Corne who also sings a bluegrass style harmony throughout, adding a unique flavor to the track.
Other album standouts include fan favorite Albert Castiglia joining Holiday with some spirited guitar and vocals on the playful Snooks Eaglin classic "Drive It Home," and Holiday shows why he's one of the finest harmonica players on the scene today, despite electing not to play the instrument on over half the songs on the album.
The record closes with a brilliant surprise, a bittersweet country soul Americana song called "I Can Not Feel The Rain," written by Holiday with help from Corne and Jad Tariq, who plays the role of Steve Cropper throughout this record.
There's something in the water in Memphis, and Tony Holiday has tapped into it to contribute to an exciting new chapter unfolding in this storied region.

Jazz Pioneer Marshall Allen, 100, Unveils Debut Solo Album New Dawn
Two days after celebrating his 100th birthday, avant-garde jazz legend Marshall Allen embarks on a groundbreaking new journey with New Dawn, his debut solo album, set to release on February 14, 2025. A revered member of The Sun Ra Arkestra since 1958 and its leader since Sun Ra’s departure, Allen’s career spans nearly seven decades. Yet, remarkably, New Dawn marks the first time this trailblazing saxophonist releases a record under his own name.
Rather than closing the book on his illustrious career, New Dawn opens a new chapter. It’s a love letter to spacetime, channeling a century of musical exploration into seven transcendent tracks that balance legacy and discovery.
A Cosmic Journey Through Time and Sound
Marshall Allen’s contributions to jazz and avant-garde music are legendary, often described as "Johnny Hodges from outer space." His pioneering sound and deep spiritual resonance have long been central to the Arkestra’s cosmic ethos. With New Dawn, Allen steps into a more intimate spotlight, showcasing a reflective yet adventurous side of his artistry.
Recorded in Philadelphia in May 2024, the album was a collaborative effort with fellow Arkestra member Knoel Scott, a lifelong friend who helped guide the project’s vision. Together, Allen and Scott combed through archives of unrecorded compositions, carefully curating material that captures the vast spectrum of Allen’s musical range. Producer Jan Lankisch notes, “Knoel’s energy was instrumental, ensuring the album stayed true to Marshall’s voice while highlighting his versatility.”
Though deeply informed by the philosophy and teachings of Sun Ra, New Dawn represents a striking moment of artistic independence for Allen. The album traverses genres and emotions, blending serene, transdimensional textures with bursts of boppy big band energy. It’s both a testament to Allen’s cosmic imagination and a deeply personal reflection on his lifelong journey through music.
Collaborative Brilliance
The recording sessions for New Dawn brought together a stellar ensemble of jazz luminaries, including Philadelphia jazz greats and Arkestra veterans. Among the contributors were Michael Ray and Cecil Brooks (trumpet), Jamaaladeen Tacuma (bass), Bruce Edwards (guitar), and George Gray (drums). This collective effort created a dynamic space for Allen’s compositions to evolve organically, with improvisation at the core of every track.
The Title Track: “New Dawn”
The album’s title track, “New Dawn,” is a standout moment that underscores Allen’s ability to meld the past and future. Featuring the unmistakable voice of Neneh Cherry, the track transitions from serene introspection to bold, explosive statements, encapsulating the spirit of the album. Cherry’s vocal performance adds a layer of emotional depth, creating a mesmerizing fusion of complexity and clarity.
Jan Lankisch describes the track as “a perfect embodiment of Marshall’s artistry: a delicate balance of spontaneity and precision, channeling decades of wisdom into every note.”
A Legacy That Transcends Time
New Dawn is more than an album; it’s a profound celebration of a century of musical innovation. For fans of jazz, avant-garde, and cosmic soundscapes, this record offers a rare glimpse into the boundless creativity of a true pioneer.
