Schema Records kicks off 2025 with the highly anticipated release of Deixa Passar / Ilê, a collaborative EP from jazz-electronic innovator Gerardo Frisina and Brazilian singer-songwriter Toco, featuring Luzia Dvorek. This digital release drops January 24, followed by a 12” vinyl on February 14.
Five Years in the Making
The EP marks the duo’s first collaboration since their acclaimed Frisina Meets Toco project, reuniting them for two brand-new tracks, Deixa Passar and Ilê. Each track is presented in both original and reworked versions, delivering a rich fusion of samba, jazz, and electronic music.
A Musical & Cultural Celebration
Frisina’s intricate compositions provide the perfect foundation for Toco’s Portuguese-language melodies and lyrics. Toco’s duet with Luzia Dvorek strikes a balance between depth and playfulness, creating an engaging contrast that resonates throughout the EP.
The instrumentation is equally compelling, featuring some of today’s most celebrated musicians:
- Gianluca Petrella on trombone,
- Eduardo Taufic on piano (Deixa Passar) and Fender Rhodes (Ilê), and
- Edu Moreno on flute (Ilê).
The blend of acoustic instrumentation and electronic textures creates a dynamic interplay of tradition and modernity, honoring Brazilian musical roots while venturing into new sonic territories.
Themes & Inspirations
- Deixa Passar captures the effervescent spirit of Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival, offering a temporary reprieve from life’s challenges.
- Ilê pays tribute to Salvador de Bahia’s bloco afro, Ilê Aiyê, celebrating the enduring legacy of Afro-Brazilian culture.
The EP also reflects Brazil’s heritage through its striking visual elements, including cover art inspired by Rio’s iconic Copacabana pavement design.
