TOM KENNEDY - JUST PLAY!

In the hands of a master, the bass can become as commanding an instrument in jazz as any horn or keyboard. Yet mastery is not just a case of conspicuous technical prowess. What makes a bassist truly special is a rare combination of imagination, taste and empathy -- all mated with monster chops. Tom Kennedy, an in-demand player who has recorded or performed with a vast range of artists including Michael Brecker in Steps Ahead, Tania Maria, Al DiMeola, Mike Stern, David Sanborn, Joe Sample, and Lee Ritenour, among others, is just such an inspiring bassist.

An all-star event, Just Play features drummer Dave Weckl, with whom Kennedy has a long friendship and recording history; guitarists Mike Stern and Lee Ritenour; pianist Renee Rosnes, tenor saxophonists George Garzone and Steve Wirts, trombonist John Allred, and trumpeter Tim Hagans.

Recorded in one day at the legendary Nola Studios in NYC, with most of the tunes captured on the first take, Kennedy's fourth CD as a leader is a testament to the prowess and virtuosity of all the musicians involved. The album is also a testament to the transformative power that occurs when superior players find themselves in a shared comfort zone. Goading each other to new heights on classic material that can bring out the best in a committed improviser, the song standards "What is this Thing Called Love" and "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes," as well as such jazz standards as "Airegin" (complete with a wailing solo by Garzone), "Moanin'" (a slow and soulful rendition featuring Ritenour), "In a Sentimental Mood," Lee Morgan's "Ceora" and Cedar Walton's "Bolivia" inspire both snapping solos and deeply in-the-pocket support by the rhythm section. Throughout, Kennedy acts as both the rock-solid foundation on which the action rides and, when he steps into the spotlight, an imposing soloist.

As Thomas Burns, President of Capri Records states, "I first worked with Tom Kennedy on Ken Peplowski's In Search ofŠ recording. I was astounded with his playing and his ability to link up with all the other cats on the date. Most bassists I've heard emulate another's style.  But while Tom is deeply rooted in the tradition of legendary bassists like Ray Brown and Paul Chambers, he solos more like a horn player."

A personal project that tellingly exhibits the trust and creative interaction that Kennedy enjoys with his A-list musician friends, Just Play also speaks of the St. Louis native's deep respect for his brother Ray, with whom Kennedy has previously recorded. "I've dedicated this recording to my brother for so many reasons. He has always been such an inspiration to me, as a phenomenal pianist, composer and arranger, and even more, through his incredible spirit of giving. Music has always been such a sharing, nurturing experience between Ray and anyone he performed with. The beauty of what music really is remains in his soul to this day, despite his inability to perform after the onset of multiple sclerosis in 2008. Ray Kennedy is a true hero to me and everyone else having the good fortune to share in his music."

Just Play makes it obvious that Tom Kennedy shares with his brother - and each of the excellent players who enliven the project -- a similar understanding of the essence of music. Beauty and excitement are in plain sight -- just play the album and hear it for yourself.

JIMI HENDRIX AMERICAN MASTERS DOCUMENTARY - HERE MY TRAIN A COMIN' - TO PREMIERE NATIONWIDE ON PBS NOV 5, 2013

Hear My Train A Comin' unveils previously unseen performance footage and home movies taken by Hendrix and drummer Mitch Mitchell while sourcing an extensive archive of photographs, drawings, family letters and more to provide new insight into the musician's personality and genius.

A pioneering electric guitarist, Hendrix had only four years of mainstream exposure and recognition, but his influential music and riveting stage presence left an enduring legacy. Hear My Train A Comin' traces the guitarist’s remarkable journey from his hardscrabble beginnings in Seattle, through his stint as a US Army paratrooper, unknown sideman to R&B stars such as Little Richard, Joey Dee and the Isley Brothers and his discovery and ultimate international stardom.

Presented as part of a year-long celebration around his 70th birthday year--the guitarist was born November 27, 1942--the two-hour Hear My Train A Comin' tells the definitive story, illustrated by interviews with Hendrix and illuminated with commentary from family, well-known friends and musicians including Paul McCartney, Noel Redding, Mitch Mitchell, Billy Cox, Eddie Kramer, Steve Winwood, Vernon Reid, Billy Gibbons, Dweezil Zappa and Dave Mason as well as revealing glimpses into Jimi and his era from the three women closest to him Linda Keith (the girlfriend who introduced Jimi to future manager Chas Chandler), Faye Pridgeon (who befriended Hendrix in Harlem in the early 1960s) and Colette Mimram (one of the era's most influential fashion trendsetters who provided inspiration for Hendrix's signature look and created such memorable stage costumes as the beaded jacket Hendrix famously wore at Woodstock).

The film details the meteoric rise of the Experience, the creation of his groundbreaking music, the building of Electric Lady Studios, his state-of-the-art recording facility in Greenwich Village, and concludes with poignant footage from his final performance in Germany in September 1970, just 12 days before his death at age 27.

Janie Hendrix, President and CEO of Experience Hendrix LLC and the sister of Jimi Hendrix commented, "Hear my Train a Comin' is an in-depth look at the life and legacy of Jimi with his own words as well as the words and memories of those that knew him well and were close to him. His impression on the world through his genius, music and talent continue to magically touch the lives of ensuing generations."

American Masters: Jimi Hendrix - Hear My Train A Comin' is directed by the award winning director Bob Smeaton (Festival Express; The Beatles Anthology; Jimi Hendrix: Voodoo Child; Hendrix 70: Live at Woodstock). Susan Lacy is series creator and executive producer of American Masters. The expanded DVD features an array of special features highlighted by never before released film footage featuring performances filmed at Miami Pop, the July 1970 New York Pop Festival and the September 6, 1970 Love & Peace Festival at the Isle Of Fehmarn in Germany—the final performance by the Jimi Hendrix Experience. The high definition DVD features new stereo and 5.1 surround mixing by Hendrix's engineer Eddie Kramer. The documentary is a production of Fuse Films and THIRTEEN's American Masters in association with WNET.

THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE - MIAMI POP FESTIVAL

Available on November 5 is Jimi Hendrix Experience: Miami Pop Festival, the first-ever release of one of the guitar virtuoso's most sought-after performances, as originally recorded on site by Hendrix's long term sound engineer, Eddie Kramer. Never available in any form, Miami Pop Festival is being released as a single CD and a limited edition numbered double 12" audiophile vinyl set (all analog cut by Bernie Grundman, pressed at QRP on 200 gram vinyl).
Jimi Hendrix Experience: Miami Pop Festival introduces the first recorded stage performances of "Hear My Train A Comin'" and "Tax Free" while showcasing definitive live takes on such classics as "Fire," "Hey Joe," "I Don't Live Today" and "Purple Haze." The package includes never before published photos taken at the festival and an essay by award-winning music journalist and Grammy Museum Executive Director Bob Santelli.

The first ever major rock festival staged on the East Coast, the May 1968 Miami Pop Festival was the first event promoted by Michael Lang—who would organize Woodstock, the biggest pop culture event of the decade, fifteen months later—and Ric O'Barry, who had been the dolphin trainer for the popular television program Flipper. Lang and O'Barry had been inspired by the June 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, the groundbreaking gathering where Jimi Hendrix, making his US debut, famously set fire to his guitar at the conclusion of his performance. Lang staged the festival at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale, Florida, securing the Jimi Hendrix Experience as the headline act for the two-day festival.

THE GENE DUDLEY GROUP - THE HILO BAY HALFWAY

The Gene Dudley Group represents an outpouring of deep soul and funk music from obscenely talented 27 year-old multi-instrumentalist residing in North London; Gene Dudley.

The debut album, Saturday Shifting, released earlier this year, caused quite a stir and quickly gained this deeply soulful producer a new army of fans, with Kenny Dope, Huey Morganand Daz-I-Kue all singing its praises!

One of the most popular tracks from the album is the up-tempo, tropical flavoured cut The Hilo Bay Halfway - available here on vinyl for the first time. It comes complete with an exclusive'Disco Dub Remix' from Gene himself, who uses hand claps, synths and some seriously squelchy bass to take this club monster in another, equally foot friendly direction; and one from label mate Scrimshire, whose afro flavoured guitar licks and quirky keyboard sounds guarantee similar dance floor destruction.

Add to that a brand new song from Gene Dudley, entitled The Mall Walk, and the added bonus of Gene's never before released remix of the Scrimshire classic Alignment, featuring the sultry vocals of Stac, and you've got a package filled to the brim with serious Wah Wah 45s talent!

In the live arena, rather than trying to play all the instruments himself though, Gene deploys a quartet of top notch young musicians to help him out (whilst Gene mixes it up between bass and keys throughout the set), as witnessed when they supportedThe Hot 8 Brass Band, played The Soundwave Festival London Launch, rocked Brixton's Hootananny, and will soon be seen again when they support Stones Throw artists Myron & E at London's Jazz Cafe in December. Look out for that, and much more to come from this new star of the deep funk and soul scene!

NEW RELEASES - TOM WOPAT, ROMAN STOLYAR / VLADIMIR LUCHANSKY, OTIS TRIO

TOM WOPAT - I'VE GOT YOUR NUMBER

Tom Wopat, star of stage, screen and TV has released a limited edition, special deluxe vinyl edition of his latest critically acclaimed album, "I've Got Your Number." The album, originally released in digital and CD formats in Feb. pays homage to the 'Mad Men' era, with Wopat performing classics from the Great American Songbook and contemporary songs from artists such as Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor -- transforming them into jazz-tinged renditions. In this limited edition, Wopat's legions of fans will have the opportunity to purchase one of the hand-numbered, double 180-gram vinyl, that also include the bonus tracks "That's Life" and Tom's original song "Thailand Sea," plus in-studio photos and personal notes from producer David Finck and Tom. 2013 has been a banner year for Wopat in all areas of entertainment; including the feature film, "Django Unchained," and most recently the award-winning Broadway show "A Trip to Bountiful." "I've Got Your Number," has been the recipient of much critical acclaim from media outlets notably the Huffington Post, Jazziz, All Music Guide, USA Today, Times Square Chronicles, and many more. With a 30-piece orchestra and stellar arrangements by Tedd Firth, Henry Hay and John Oddo, the album is a true nod to the orchestra/big band hybrid of the '60s and '70s. "It is only fitting that we release this album on vinyl," states Tom. "We've evoked the spirit of the New York supper club era and the cool vibe of the Mad Men days when vinyl recordings were supreme!"

ROMAN STOLYAR / VLADIMIR LUCHANSKY - DUETS

“Duets” is a collaboration of two most active members of Siberian community of musicians and improvisers. Luchansky and Stolyar played together for some years, mainly in groups organized by Siberian new jazz patriarch, Sergey Belichenko. Together they played with well-known improvisers who visited Novosibirsk: Assif Tsahar, Oliver Lake, Glen Hall, William Parker. That is why at the time of duet album recording the musicians were сo-ordinated perfectly and spoke the same language, even multiple-languages of contemporary free improvisation. Inquisitive listener will find different things in the music of duet: radical “non-idiomology” originating from Derek Bailey, meditative modality, minimalism, sonorous techniques and bright melodic lines. All pieces from the album contrast sharply with each other, but at the same time they are the parts of unified whole, as from a fancy curls of pattern imprinted on the window on a cold day, revealing a fabulous picture of exotic Siberian nature for many people.

OTIS TRIO - OTIS NATU / MONTAG'S DREAM

This week sees the release of the debut 7" by Otis Trio. Far Out Recordings bringing the provocative, soul shaking sounds of Otis Trio to the world. Side A features the contagious fast paced rhythm of ‘Otis Natu’, an outstanding number that won’t allow your feet to be still. On Side B you can experience the ethereal beauty of ‘Montag’s Dream’, a piece in which Beto Montag’s vibraphone shows its haunting beauty at its full power. Here’s a record that surely marks the beginning of something timeless and captivating.

6-CD BOX SET DUE FROM CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL

Set for reissue on November 11, Creedence Clearwater Revival: 6-CD Boxed Set contains everything the rockers cut in the studio for Fantasy from 1967 to 1972—their seven studio albums (Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bayou Country, Green River, Willy and The Poor Boys, Cosmo’s Factory, Pendulum, and Mardi Gras) packed with smashes (“Proud Mary,” “Bad Moon Rising,”  “Down On The Corner,” “Fortunate Son,” “Green River,” “Travelin’ Band,” “Up Around The Bend,” “Lookin’ Out My Back Door”). There’s nearly a disc-and-a-half of live material from concerts at the Oakland Coliseum and across the European continent as well, proving that CCR was as explosive onstage as within the confines of the studio.

Also on board are 25 1961-1967 rarities from the days when John, his brother Tom (on rhythm guitar and some lead vocals), bassist Stu Cook, and drummer Doug Clifford did business as Tommy Fogerty & the Blue Velvets and then the Golliwogs. These hard-rocking garage band gems, collectors’ items all, comprise the entire first disc of this box.

The big difference between this edition of the CCR box and its acclaimed 2001 predecessor is its sleeker, highly attractive packaging.  The artwork highlights the band’s strong affinity for Kustom amplifiers, paying clever tribute to their gritty garage rock roots in the process. Its “amplified” cover looks like a Kustom rig; prominently featured elsewhere is a photo of John and Doug sharing an onstage high-five with one of those distinctive amps in the background. It’s featured on the inner sleeve of each disc, divided into six sections. When laid out together in the correct order, those six individual sleeves create the full photograph. The joyous image is as powerful as the music itself.

Comprehensive liner notes by well-known rock journalists Ben Fong-Torres, Robert Christgau, Ed Ward, Joel Selvin, Craig Werner, Alec Palao and Dave Marsh expertly detail CCR’s career in the deluxe accompanying booklet, which contains a plethora of vintage photos of the iconic band. No boxed set will ever cover CCR’s history more comprehensively than this one—or do it more attractively.

MARY CHAPIN CARPENTER - SONGS FROM THE MOVIE DUE JAN. 14

Mary Chapin Carpenter’s debut orchestral record, Songs From The Movie, will be released January 14 on Zoë/Rounder Records. Recorded at Air Studios in London, the album was arranged and conducted by six-time Grammy Award winner Vince Mendoza (Sting, Diana Krall, Chris Botti, Elvis Costello, Björk, Joni Mitchell) and was produced by Carpenter and Mendoza along with Matt Rollings (Keith Urban, Lyle Lovett). Featured on the album are new interpretations of ten beloved songs by Carpenter, including “Between Here and Gone” and “Come On Come On.”

In celebration of the album, Carpenter is set to embark on her first tour with a live orchestral backing. The tour will run throughout 2014 and includes a special debut performance at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra on January 24 as well as a date at L.A.’s Disney Concert Hall with L.A. Philharmonic on February 8. See reverse for complete details.

Songs From The Movie pairs Carpenter’s songbook with an ensemble of London’s finest orchestral musicians and features Peter Erskine (Weather Report, John Abercrombie, Rod Stewart, Michael Bublé, Joni Mitchell, Diana Krall) on drums. Of the recording process, Carpenter comments, “Working with Vince Mendoza was incredibly inspiring. His arrangements gave these existing songs new meanings, new colors, new feelings, new destinations. To hear them played by the world class orchestra assembled at Air Studios was beyond any artistic experience that I could have imagined.”

The past two years have been landmark years for acclaimed singer-songwriter. In addition to releasing Ashes and Roses (2012) to widespread critical acclaim, Carpenter was recently inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and won an Emmy award for her work on Nashville Public Television's “No Going Back: Women and the War.” Over the course of her career, Carpenter has recorded 12 albums and has sold over 13 million records. With hits like “Passionate Kisses” and “He Thinks He’ll Keep Her,” she has won five Grammy Awards (with 15 nominations), two CMA awards and two Academy of Country Music awards for her vocals. Her songs speak to the most personal of life’s details and the most universal.

NEW RELEASES - JACQUES BREL & FRANCOIS RAUBER, MICHEL LEGRAND, SONGS FROM THE GRASSY KNOLL

JACQUES BREL & FRANCOIS RAUBER - CHANSONS ET MUSIQUES DE FILMS

A great look at a much lesser-known side of the career of French singer Jacques Brel – his key performances in films of the late 60s and early 70s, most of which received strong musical backing from his longtime arranger Francois Rauber! Brel didn't always sing on screen – he was a surprisingly great actor, too – especially in comedies – but his movies often featured a vocal number or two as part of the package, and Rauber was often on hand to provide some deft touches to the score! This 2CD package is the first to explore this lost legacy in Brel's career, and is a really great balance between his own vocal performances and instrumental numbers from Rauber – 42 tracks from films that include Le Far West, Le Panier A Crabes, Mon Oncle Benjamin, L'Emmerdeur, Le Bar De La Fourche, Tintin Et Le Temple Du Soleil, La Bande A Bonnot, and others. ~ Dusty Groove.

    MICHEL LEGRAND - ANTHOLOGY

A massive amount of music from Michel Legrand – a sublime set that goes way beyond his famous soundtrack work, to offer up jazz, vocal, pop, and even symphonic material as well! The box brings together 15 CDs, each of which offers up a sublime slice of Legrand's genius – lots of which has never been presented on CD before. The set includes the instrumental albums I Love Paris and Legrand In Rio, the jazz albums Legrand Jazz and Plays Richard Rogers, a Tribute To George Gershwin, the Stan Getz album Communcations 72, the Bud Shank album Bud Shank Plays Michel Legrand, a CD of Original Arrangements & Songs, a CD of Vocal Performances from the mid 60s, a CD of collaborations with Jacques Demy, harp/piano duets on Jazzic In Classic, a CD of Symphonic Works, a CD of Legrand's work interpreted by International Performers, a CD of Stage Musical compositions (Monte Cristo, Jarry Sur La Butte, and Bistro), a CD of work from Animated Films (including Oum Le Dauphin Blanc, La Flute A Six Schtroumphs, and Il Etaite Une Fois L'Espace), a Tribute To Alain Delon (La Piscine/unused music from Le Cercle Rouge), a CD of work for Joseph Losey films (Eva, The Go-Between, and Les Routes Du Sud), and a CD of music for American Movies (Castle Keep, Portnoy's Complaint, It's Good To Be Alive, and Gable & Lombard). 300 songs, and over 17 hours of music – plus a great booklet too! ~ Dusty Groove.

TRAGIC SONGS FROM THE GRASSY KNOLL: JOHN F. KENNEDY 50TH ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION

One of the weirdest sub-genres of music you'll ever hope to discover – a whole host of songs that were issued in the wake of the untimely early death of John F Kennedy – a batch of tribute tunes to the late president, served up in a unique collection of rare singles! There's a surprisingly large number of country songs on the set – no surprise, as the story format of the genre works perfectly for the tributes – as does the country style of stepping out with a monologue in the middle. A few other numbers are more rocking, but in a somber way – and all together, the singles unearth this lost musical legacy that really demonstrates the power of the man at the time. Titles include "Memories Of Kennedy" by Hasil Adkins, "Tragedy Of John F Kennedy" by The Justice Brothers, "A Tragedy In Dallas" by James Dotson, "John F Kennedy" by Buddy Pastuck, "Lee Harvey Was A Friend Of Mine" by Homer Henderson, "Two Brothers" by Bobby Jenzen, "Tribute To President Kennedy" by Johnny Dee, and "A Sunny Day In Dallas" by The Honorable Bob Peters. ~ Dusty Groove.

NEW RELEASES - MILTON NASCIMENTO, EKUNDAYO, ROBERTO MENESCAL & ANDREA AMORIM

MILTON NASCIMENTO - UMA TRAVESSIA - 50 ANOS DE CARREIRA AO VIVO

One of the best albums we've heard from Milton Nascimento in years – and a really beautiful live performance that pays tribute to his 5 decades in music! The performance has a crisp, personal quality we don't always hear in Milton's studio work these days – and the band worked with Nascimento on the arrangements, which have just the right mix of complexity and intimacy to recall his corner club years – and still bring out all the best aspects in his vocals. Of course, it helps that most of the tunes here are classics – and even later numbers seem to benefit from the old school handling of the set – as you'll hear on titles that include "Anima", "Lagrimas Do Sul", "Cais", "Vera Cruz", "Para Lennon E McCartney", "Cancaoes E Momentos", "Travessia", "Raca", "Maria Maria", and "Amor De Indio". ~ Dusty Groove
    .
    EKUNDAYO - EKUNDAYO

A really amazing project, with roots in a number of different styles – and a quality that's quite unlike anything else we've ever heard before! The group's got a trans-American vibe – contributions from US musicians like Scotty Hard, Melvin Gibbs, and Rob Mazurek, mixed with percussion from Nana Vasconcelos, and topped with vocals and rhymes from Mike Ladd, Lurdez Da Luz, and R Brandao! The music's got the kind of darkly funky quality in the rhythms that we know from Gibbs' earlier projects – although Melvin is just a guest musician on the set – but there's also some of the textured electronics that Mazurek uses in some of his Sao Paulo Underground material, too – which gives the album a very deep feel, even when the lyrics are more direct. Titles include "Family Thang", "Freak Rocker", "Prelevar", "Just Love", "Night Of The Hunter", "Claudio Cafe", and "Em Nove". ~ Dusty Grooove

ROBERTO MENESCAL & ANDREA AMORIM - BOSSA DE ALMA NOVA

Beautiful bossa from the great Roberto Menescal – and a set that features breezy vocals from Andrea Amorim in the lead, with a style that's a lot like some of Menescal's previous projects with Wanda Sa! Menescal plays acoustic guitar, handles arrangements, and sings a bit too – bringing a mature sensibility to the record that really keeps the proceedings in a classic bossa mode, while still showing some of the freshest touches we've heard from him in years – quite possibly because Amorim's such a delightful partner for the project! Production is a bit more personal than other recent Menescal projects, and the phrasing of both guitars and vocals is mighty nice – way more than just a bossa copycat session. Titles include "A Morte De Um Deus De Sal", "Eu Canto Meu Blues", "Agarradinhos", "O Barquinho", "Bye Bye Brasil", "Nos E O Mar", and "Solidao Nunca Mais". ~ Dusty Groove

NEW RELEASES - LA LA BROOKS, CLARA HILL, ERIC REED

LA LA BROOKS - ALL OR NOTHING

Brand new solo work from La La Brooks of The Crystals – a singer who first worked with Phil Spector when she was only 13 years old – and who still sounds pretty darn great all these many years later! The folks at Norton have kept the record strongly in an old school 60s soul mode – a style that works perfectly with La La's lead, as she works her way through a surprisingly great range of tunes – not just soul numbers, but a few surprising rockers from the Small Faces, Bee Gees, Willy DeVille, and others – tracks that really help bring a mod soul vibe to the album. Titles include "All Or Nothing", "A Boy Like You", "Crazy For You", "Dear Boy Love Girl", "I Broke That Promise", "Sun Is Shining", and "Two Is Company". ~ Dusty Groove.

CLARA HILL - WALK THE DISTANCE

It's been many years since we last heard from Clara Hill – an artist we first fell in love with about a decade ago, as part of the Sonar Kollektiv scene in Germany – and she's really grown a lot in the process, and has started to do some amazing things with her music! The Hill heard here is heavy on analogue electronics – loads of cool keyboards and deep bass bits that almost feel like they're lifted from the left field of electro work from the early 80s – yet handled with more sophistication, and turned towards some of the more soulful phrasing we've come to expect from Clara. Vocals are still a part of her picture, but much less so than before – which leaves lots of room for the instrumentation, which often initiates the feel of a tune before Clara's lyrics slide in. Titles include "Night Work", "Walk The Distance", "Lost Winter", "Heading Out", "Insomnia", and "Dripstone Cave". ~ Dusty Groove

ERIC REED - REFLECTIONS OF A GRATEFUL HEART

Reflections Of A Grateful Heart is the latest CD release from Eric Reed, one of the most innovative pianists in modern jazz. This CD features Reed in a rare solo piano setting, performing jazz and gospel selections and celebrating the music that has been this critically-renown artist's greatest influences. The CD includes the gospel standards I Love The Lord by Richard Smallwood, Changed by Walter Hawkins, and solo piano renditions of Reed's own compositions Prayer, and New Morning. Reed, whose first performances were in his father's storefront Baptist church, was bitten by the jazz bug after hearing recordings by Art Blakey, Ramsey Lewis and Dave Brubeck. Reflections Of A Grateful Heart is the continuation of Reed artistically blending his jazz and gospel influences in a unique fashion. ~ Amazon

NEW RELEASES - ERA RECORDS NORTHERN SOUL, NEW ORLEANS FUNK, DUES PAID:THE BLUESTIME STORY

ERA RECORDS NORTHERN SOUL (VARIOUS ARTISTS)

Storming soul groovers from Era Records – an LA label that was known for a host of different genres, but who managed to cut some marvelous Northern Soul in the mid 60s! Era's an under-tapped source for work of this nature – as evidenced by the number of previously-unreleased cuts on the collection – showing that even if you have a handful of singles on Era from the 60s, you've still got plenty more to discover! The music has a great 60s LA finish – swinging soul with a very tight approach to rhythm, and a subtle set of drama that makes most of the lyrics break out differently than more familiar soul music from back east. As always with Kent, the whole set's a joyous discovery – really well put-together, with great sound and notes – and a selection of cuts that includes "Come On Home" by Othello Robertson, "Stand There Mountain" by Vince Howard, "I Ain't Gonna Take You Back" by Brenda Holloway & The Carrolls, "You & Yours" by The Composers, "I Get A Feeling" by The Soul Mates, "My Book" by Bruce Cloud, "The Ice Man" by Billy Watkins, "Boomerange" by The Lovemates, and "I Wanna Know" by Carrol Connors. ~ Dusty Groove
NEW ORLEANS FUNK - THE ORIGINAL SOUND OF FUNK VOL. 3 (VARIOUS ARTISTS)

The cover image looks old-timey, but the grooves on the set are totally modern – a wealth of wonderful funky numbers from the New Orleans scene of the 60s and 70s – just the kind of gems that made us love the previous two volumes in this series! We might well argue that this third collection is the coolest of the bunch – as it features some more obscure, overlooked gems from the Crescent City – filled with the kind of raw rhythms and driving grooves that always make Nola soul tracks so great! There's no hoke here at all – no Mardi Gras cliches nor pandering for the tourists – and instead, this stuff is at the cusp of the best bursting moment of pride and power for New Orleans – the kind of cuts cut at a time when the city was really discovering how great it could be. As with all Soul Jazz sets, the notes and package really live up to the quality of the music – and the set's overflowing with greatness, in a batch of 18 tracks that includes "What You Want" by Lee Dorsey & The Meters, "Got A Get My Baby Back Home" by Tony Owens, "Fairchild" by Willie West, "Go To The Mardi Gras" by Professor Longhair, "Trouble With My Lover" by Betty Harris, "Omar Khayyam" by The Rubaiyats, "Gossip Gossip" by Diamond Joe, "Fagged Out" by The Deacons, "The Book" by Eldridge Holmes, "We The People" by Allen Toussaint, "Jockey Ride (parts 1 & 2)" by The Explosions, and "Do It Fluid" by The Dirty Dozen Brass Band. ~ Dusty Groove

DUES PAID - THE BLUESTIME STORY (VARIOUS ARTISTS)

A totally great collection of rare material from the Bluestime label – a rare rootsy side of the Flying Dutchman imprint at the start of the 70s! Flying Dutchman is a well-remembered label for its rich array of funk and jazz titles – and although Bluestime worked in the blues side of the spectrum, most of these numbers are pretty darn funky too – thanks to some shared musicians and production talents with the main Flying Dutchman scene. In other words, the tracks are all pretty darn hip – and way way more than blues – really more funk tunes that have a gritty, raspy edge – like those rare few times when Chess Records' bluesmen got nice and funky. Titles include "I'm A Dues Payin Man" by Optis Spann, "Every Day I Have The Blues" by T-Bone Walker, "Plastic Man" by Joe Turner, "Love" by Harmonica Slim, "Paris Blues" by The Super Black Blues Band, "I Wonder Why" by Otis Spann, "Something So Bright" by Malcolm & Chris, "That's Alright" by Harmonica Slim, Chicago Charva Chapter" by The Plaster Caster Blues Band, "Disillusion Blues" by Leon Thomas, and "For BB King" by T-Bone Walker. ~ Dusty Groove

VOLTAIQUE PANORAMIQUE VOLUME 1 CONTAINS GREAT TRACKS FROM BURKINA FASO

“Voltaique Panoramique Vol.1″ contains great unheard tracks from Burkina Faso a true must have for collectors and music lovers. The release comes with extensive liner notes and an inlay which features the original 7 inches.

Until recently not much was known about music from Burkina Faso, formerly called the Upper Volta. It is still one of West Africa lesser known forms of popular music. A few years before the country changed its name to Burkina Faso, thanks to Thomas Sankara’s dream for a new society, Voltaic music emerged as some form of true cultural revolution. Remote, poor and isolated, Burkina Faso looked to the orchestras and artists from neighbouring countries such as Mali, The Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo and Benin. Located at its northern border, Niger is the only other West African country whose music stayed as isolated as the music hailing from Burkina Faso. Most of its bands and artists hail mostly from Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso. They infuse some of the rich local traditions, such as mossi dances or dioula singing, with afro-cuban flavours, American rhythm’n'blues, French pop or Congolese rumba. Electric guitars and organs swirl around balafon and solid horn sections. Despite the fact that the 1960′s and 1970′s Upper Volta lacked a proper recording studio and record pressing plant, there was a great deal of popular music produced in the country from the late 1960′s to the early 1980′s, mostly on seven inches.

With over thirty 7 inches released, Bobo-Dioulasso’s Volta Jazz is the most prolific of those Voltaic bands. One of their hymns, composed and sung by sax player Moustapha Maiga is Djougou Malola. Praising Bobo and its inhabitants, this amazing bolero embodies perfectly the thinness, remoteness and grace of modern Voltaic music. On the same emotional level, Nogleem Nooma is one of the loveliest ballads to have come out of Burkina Faso. A short instrumental number Killa Naa Ye Killa displays the masterful playing of Semporé, perfectly at ease with his tenor saxophone, his flute and band direction.

Hailing from Sifarasso in south west Burkina, Richard Seydou Traoré is one of Burkina’s most elegant musicians, Rassemblement is a tongue in cheek number nodding to American jerk rhythm with military orders sung in French. A close friend of Traoré, Jean-Bernard Samboué belonged to the same generation of students coming of age in the early 1970′s. Aïcha stands certainly as his best song. With the help of his band, Mange Kondé recorded three singles released under his own name. Beni Idjananko is reminiscent of the great mandingo songs from Guinea. Warm and fierce, Woulouni displays some exceptional groove virtues. Born in Boulsa in 1947, Pierre Sandwidi is one of the most beloved Voltaic stars. One of his stronger moment, the infectious Yamb Ney Capitale benefits from the participation of Super Volta musicians. A true highlight of Voltaic music, Super Volta’s La Guitare de Tinga displays the masterful guitar playing of Désiré Traoré and the artistic maturity of one of Burkina’s best bands. The same musicians are to be found on Abdoulaye Cissé’s Jeunesse Wilila. He reached for fame in 1974 with A Son Magni, one of CVD first 7 inches while the b-side, L’homme à la Guitare gave him an instant nickname. In 1976, he recorded another four song session, done live at the Maison du Peuple with a simple Akai tape stereo recorder. A true masterpiece and a generational hymn, Jeunesse Wilila is an ode to the empowerment of the youth to build up the country, fifteen years after its independence. A perfect blend between afro-funk and afro-beat, Deny tologuelen is the last release of the Volta Discobel, just after owner Master Boureima’s death. Intense, fresh and full of creativity with vocal interjections one could think might stem from Jean Rouch’s cult movie Cocorico Monsieur Poulet, it is a true and unsung masterpiece.

The Authentique Dafra Star de Bobo-Dioulasso had the opportunity to record two full albums and a dozen singles, almost released locally on the Music Hall record label. One of the highlights of the band’s repertoire is Ram Pasonayé, sung with passion by Siaka ‘Elvis’ Ouattara. In the same league as the Dafra Star, Echo Del Africa was one of Bobo’s finest bands. Six years later, this band was able to release their first 7 inch in August 1974 under the brand Discaf, owned by Antoine D’Albin, one of the band first singers. The next release is the politically correct 1975, Année De La Femme, sung by bandleader José Thiono-By. On the b-side, the fierce younger singer Youssou Diarra stole the show with Yiri Wah, one of the hardest sounding songs from Burkina Faso in the 1970′s.

NEW RELEASES - HRISTO VITCHEV / LIUBOMIR KRASTEV, DEE C'RELL, BENJAMIN SIKSOU & THE HORNDOGZ

HRISTO VITCHEV / LIUBOMIR KRASTEV - RHODOPA

With their 'Rhodopa" project, modern jazz guitarist and composer clarinetist Liubomir Krastev create a beautiful sonic pairing of the extremely emotional and lyrical Bulgarian folklore and the multi-dimensional and deeply textured world of modern jazz harmony. Their self-titled debut album "Rhodopa" features exciting new arrangements of old Bulgarian folk melodies as well as some new originals by the guitarist.

DEE C'RELL - THE PARIS SESSION - LIVE

The Paris Session - Live is taken from the successful live performances by Dee C’rell. The double A-side is a mixture of minimal techno, jazz, and electroacoustic treatments. Dee C’rell has become increasingly established worldwide within electronic jazz related music, and The Paris Session – Live is a unique view into the world of his current live performances. On the first track " Don’t Ever Leave Myself I" features Dee C’rell using electronics, the piano, and Rhodes in live performance. Embracing 4/4 rhythms, which Dee is intrinsically connected to; he manipulates and treats audio and acoustic instrument with subtle precision, using influences of jazz, electronica, and dance related music making practices. Don’t Ever Leave Myself I is a welcome return to some of the more progressive dance music elements of Dee C’rell’s music, whilst capturing much of the composition methods that is found in Dee C’rell’s previous music releases. Track 2 - " Letters from Chicago" - Since his iconic remix of Jocelyn Brown’s I like It Like That, under the name of Drum Whispers, which was released within the Chicago house scene in the 1990’s, Dee C’rell has maintained his love and admiration for the electronic music scene from the city of Chicago. Fusing instruments and electronics within live performance, Letters from Chicago pays homage to music that greatly inspired Dee C’rell. Letters from Chicago is a combination of jazz, contemporary music, electronics, and Chicago house. ~ music.www.deecrell.com
