Nels Cline Drops New Single "Slipping into Something" from Upcoming Album Consentrik Quartet

Acclaimed guitarist and Wilco member Nels Cline has released “Slipping into Something,” the third single from his highly anticipated album Consentrik Quartet. Set to be released on March 14 through Blue Note Records, this album marks the debut of his new ensemble, Consentrik Quartet, featuring saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock, bassist Chris Lightcap, and drummer Tom Rainey.

Blending elements of swinging, grooving, and mesmerizing soundscapes, Consentrik Quartet showcases the deep musical chemistry among its members, while highlighting Cline’s incredible versatility as a guitarist and composer.

This spring, Cline will be touring with the Consentrik Quartet across the Northeast, including an April 14 performance at Le Poisson Rouge in New York City. The band will also perform at the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, Tennessee, on March 30. Cline will make four festival appearances in total this year, including performances with eucademix (March 28), Jenny Scheinman (March 29), and the expanded version of The Nels Cline Singers (March 28), marking their first live show since the 2020 release of Share The Wealth. Cline’s musical range has been widely recognized, from his iconic contributions to Wilco to his acclaimed solo albums with Blue Note Records. His prior releases, such as Lovers and Share The Wealth, have highlighted his prowess in both mood music and sonic innovation. Consentrik Quartet offers a new chapter in his exploration of improvised music, blending Cline’s influences from jazz legends like John Scofield and Eric Dolphy with his own experimental approach to composition.

A deep dive into Cline’s eclectic influences, Consentrik Quartet also reflects his dedication to improvised music, with echoes of the guitar-saxophone collaborations from the John Scofield/Joe Lovano quartets and the introspective improvisation of the Jimmy Giuffre 3. This album represents a return to his roots in the Brooklyn improvised-music scene, where he became a pivotal player over a decade ago.

Despite the challenges of the pandemic, Cline found time to write much of the album’s material during lockdown, allowing him to refine his vision and sonic palette. The album’s composition offers a unique blend of traditional and modern influences, demonstrating his unparalleled ability to create fresh sounds within the jazz world.

Consentrik Quartet is a testament to Cline’s commitment to pushing musical boundaries while maintaining a deep connection to his roots. The release serves not only as a creative milestone but as a love letter to the vibrant Brooklyn music scene that shaped his career.
