R&B/Jazz keyboardist Charles A. Kelly pushes the boundaries of contemporary jazz with his sophomore album Phase II, released on February 21. A deeply spiritual and transformative work, it marks the second chapter in a planned trilogy. Kelly wrote, produced, and arranged ten tracks that explore personal growth, innovation, and connection. The third single, Raindrops Under Glass, blends classical orchestrations, African rhythms, and movie score melodies, and was also released on Friday.
Kelly’s 2022 debut, You’re Not Alone, laid the groundwork for the trilogy, establishing the present moment in contemporary jazz. Phase II serves as a bridge, pushing the genre’s boundaries and offering an experimental exploration of its potential future. The final chapter, a double album, will further evolve the genre.
"My mission for this album is to stretch the current boundaries of contemporary jazz," said Kelly. "For the music to grow, we must boldly create songs that reach and connect with a wider audience."
Phase II opens with the energetic "That Groove," featuring a horn-powered groove driven by bassist Jerome Randall and drummer Billy “Shoes” Johnson. Other highlights include SunSeeker, a joyful and travel-inspired track that peaked at No. 4 on the charts, and City Night, which reflects Kelly's experiences performing in Philadelphia's nightclubs. Bring It to Compliance incorporates fusion, adding electric guitar and intense rhythms, while Feathers In Flight draws inspiration from the film American Beauty, symbolizing the beauty found in life's simplest moments.
The album also features the bold and empowering Amanirenas, named after a powerful queen from the Kingdom of Kush, and I Only Want You, a song inspired by love, faith, and the protection of God. When We Are One, set to release as the fourth single on April 15, explores the deep connection in relationships, and the final track, Song For Sharlise, is a deeply personal solo piano composition written in memory of Kelly’s late daughter.
Other contributing musicians include GRAMMY-winning percussionist Munyungo Jackson, drummers Tony Moore and Land Richards, and guitarist James Greene.
Kelly, a seasoned artist who has worked with Stevie Wonder, Elton John, and CeCe Winans, continues to make his mark with this evolving musical trilogy. For more information on Phase II, visit www.charlesakelly.com.
