The Soultrend Orchestra: A Musical Odyssey
The Soultrend Orchestra is a remarkable side project led by renowned producer and musician Nerio “Papik” Poggi. Best known for his groundbreaking work under the Papik moniker, Poggi has cemented his reputation as one of Italy’s foremost producers in the Nu Jazz Lounge scene. Over the past decade, his creative vision has given rise to approximately 40 albums, spanning collaborations with solo artists and curated collections such as the celebrated ‘Cocktail’ series.
With The Soultrend Orchestra, Poggi delves deeply into the realms of Soul Jazz and Disco, drawing inspiration from the iconic sounds of the 70s and 80s. Influenced by legends like Roy Ayers, George Benson, and Donald Byrd, Poggi’s work also nods to the Acid Jazz movement spearheaded by groups such as Incognito and The Brand New Heavies.
A Glimpse into the Past: Albums That Define an Era
The Soultrend Orchestra debuted in 2017 with 84 King Street, a vibrant homage to the golden age of Disco. The album’s title references the legendary Paradise Garage, the New York club where DJs like David Mancuso and Larry Levan propelled Disco into a global phenomenon during the late 70s.
In 2022, the release of Live For Funk marked a pivot toward Soul and Jazz influences, as exemplified by tracks like “About Love,” which pays tribute to the timeless sound of Roy Ayers. This album showcased Poggi’s evolving artistry and his commitment to exploring diverse sonic landscapes.
Looking Ahead: Non Imagine (2025)
The forthcoming album, Non Imagine, is set to release in early 2025. Produced in collaboration with Peter De Girolamo (aka P.A. Jeron), the project continues Poggi’s exploration of Soul Jazz and Disco, blending nostalgia with innovation. The album features contributions from long-time collaborators such as Alfredo Bochicchio, Massimo Guerra, and Simone “Federicuccio” Talone, alongside vocalists Laura Lanzillo, Erika Scherlin, and Anna Fondi.
Adding to its allure, Non Imagine boasts guest appearances by an impressive roster of vocal talent, including Wendy D. Lewis, Ely Bruna, Nadyne Rush, Filippo Perbellini, Stevie Biondi, and Nicole Magolie. Notable covers include a reimagined version of Chic’s Disco classic “Lost In Music,” made famous by Sister Sledge, and Kool & The Gang’s ethereal “Summer Madness,” brought to life by De Girolamo’s lush keyboards and Fondi’s captivating vocals.
A Celebration of Timeless Sounds
The Soultrend Orchestra stands as a testament to Nerio Poggi’s unwavering passion for music. With Non Imagine, he invites listeners on a journey that celebrates the rich tapestry of Jazz, Funk, and Disco, proving once again that great music transcends time and genre.
