Jeffrey Gimble’s Long-Awaited Album Brand New Key Celebrates Jazz, Soul, and Growth

Jeffrey Gimble’s second album, Brand New Key, is a captivating mix of classic standards, lesser-known gems, and a few tracks that absolutely deserve to become standards. It marks the vocalist’s long-anticipated return since his 2013 debut, Beyond Up High. All About Jazz praised his debut, calling it “quite frankly, terrific in style, swing, and swagger.” With Brand New Key, Gimble continues to showcase his refined artistry, capturing the essence of jazz while introducing fresh interpretations that reveal his growth as a performer.

The album features a stellar lineup of Los Angeles musicians, including acclaimed pianist and composer Josh Nelson, who also produced the album. Guitarist Larry Koonse, bassist Dan Lutz, and drummer Dan Schnelle round out the band. Gimble had long hoped to collaborate with Nelson. “Josh is such a brilliant pianist and arranger," he says. "We kept talking about doing a project together, and I thought, how could I not? He’s one of my closest friends and one of the best pianists in town.”

Gimble’s musical journey began in a jazz-filled home in Houston, where he accompanied his bandleader father to gigs, immersed himself in his family's vast jazz record collection, and played piano and sang. It was during these formative years that he first encountered the Great American Songbook and the works of American musical theater, sparking a lifelong love of jazz.

Brand New Key reflects Gimble’s passion for the music of the '60s and '70s while delving into his own musical evolution. "I think the real reason I chose the title Brand New Key is because it signifies that I’m a different singer now," he explains. "I’m bringing something to the table that I didn’t have before. I’m full of new ideas and excited about where I can take a song.”

The album opens with a fresh take on the 1926 jazz standard "Bye Bye Blackbird." Inspired by old-school R&B, Gimble gives it a funky groove, influenced by Curtis Mayfield’s soul-driven style. Another standout track is "Tryin’ Times," originally recorded by the legendary Roberta Flack in 1969. A call for unity and love in the face of adversity, Gimble honors the song’s timeless message with sensitivity, while mixing in real-life street sounds for added texture.

Among the highlights is Gimble’s interpretation of the Rodgers and Hart classic "I Didn’t Know What Time It Was," from their 1939 Broadway musical Too Many Girls. The lyrics' joyful spirit resonate deeply with Gimble, who has always admired the duo's lyrical prowess.

Gimble also pays tribute to his childhood love of bossa nova with a Portuguese rendition of "A Rã (A Frog)." His deep admiration for bossa nova icons like Sérgio Mendes has been with him since childhood. A nostalgic memory of spotting Mendes backstage at a concert at age four has stayed with him, fueling his lifelong affection for the genre.

In another moment of serendipity, Gimble and Nelson spontaneously recorded "The Nearness of You," a song they frequently perform together during gigs. What started as a casual jam session ended up as a track the two felt deserved to be on the album.

The title track, “Brand New Key,” a pop hit by Melanie from 1971, adds a fun and playful twist to the collection. "It’s a little sexy, a little goofy, and I really enjoy singing it," Gimble says, adding that it was the first record he ever bought. His cover of Dena DeRose's "In the Glow of the Moonlight" draws him in with its unexpected melody shifts and octave leaps, a perfect match for his voice.

The album’s closer, "Music’s The Only Thing That’s on My Mind," pays homage to his childhood, recalling the moments when his father played "Sweet Adeline." "The music that he taught me reached right out and caught me," Gimble reflects. "Music’s the only thing that’s on my mind."

Gimble’s father, Maynard Gimble, always encouraged him to follow his heart, and that’s precisely what he’s done with Brand New Key. With Nelson’s brilliant arrangements and the band’s stellar musicianship, the album is a heartfelt, personal journey that resonates with listeners on multiple levels.

Brand New Key will be released on Café Pacific Records and will be available on Bandcamp (physical copies) and all streaming platforms on April 4, 2025.

Released on the anniversary of his tragic passing in 2009, this album unveils a side of Mellett’s musical genius that many never knew – his remarkable talents as a singer and songwriter.

A Tribute to Coleman Mellett’s Musical Legacy

While Coleman Mellett was widely celebrated for his role as a core member of Chuck Mangione’s band, few knew of his profound connection to the singer-songwriter tradition. Influenced by the '70s greats like James Taylor, Paul Simon, and Michael Franks, Mellett’s compositions blend folk, pop, and jazz, creating a sound that feels timeless and universally relatable.

The journey to complete the album was filled with immense emotional and creative dedication. On February 12, 2009, Mellett tragically died in a plane crash while traveling to perform with Mangione and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. Following this unimaginable loss, Bryson and Mellett’s close friend, jazz legend Barry Miles, worked tirelessly to finish Mellett’s final vision.

An All-Star Collaboration to Complete the Vision

In the months following Mellett’s death, Barry Miles, Jeanie Bryson, and engineer Ron DiCesare meticulously pieced together Mellett’s unfinished demos, sorting through hundreds of recordings to bring his vision to life. • "In the Weeds" emerges naturally from Hadfield's ocean drum, setting a relaxed tone while still allowing for seamless composition flow.

  • "Corduroy", a composition by Minaie, weaves subtle yet powerful emotions into the album, offering a moment of brooding optimism.

  • "Falling Grace" is a standout track for Shepik, named as one of his all-time favorites for its challenging 9/8 circular form and inspiring harmony.

  • "Ranglin", written as an homage to legendary Jamaican guitarist Ernest Ranglin, brings a fresh fusion of styles.

The album concludes with "Pilgrimage", an early Shepik composition revitalized by Hadfield and Minaie’s contributions, and the epic "Rocinante" (written by Minaie), which takes its name from Don Quixote's loyal steed, symbolizing endurance and strength as the perfect ending to this deeply collaborative and textured album.

Zoo Too Trio Announces Debut Album Poetry Legroom

Poetry Legroom, the debut album from the innovative jazz ensemble Zoo Too Trio, is set to drop on May 16, 2025, via Shifting Paradigm Records. The album redefines the traditional jazz trio format, blending contemporary jazz with elements of pop, electronic, and cinematic soundscapes. Featuring pianist Michael Cain, guitarist Keith Price, and drummer Pheeroan akLaff, Poetry Legroom presents a bold, expansive take on the genre, offering an exciting exploration of sound and improvisation.

The Musicians Behind Zoo Too Trio

Michael Cain, a renowned pianist and composer, leads the trio with his masterful harmonic structures and fluid improvisation. With a rich career that spans decades, Cain has worked with jazz luminaries such as Jack DeJohnette, Meshell Ndegeocello, and Ravi Coltrane. His acclaimed ECM release Circa showcases his unique ability to blend jazz with classical and electronic influences, making him a driving force behind Zoo Too Trio's distinctive sound.

Drummer Pheeroan akLaff brings his unparalleled rhythmic innovation to the trio. Having collaborated with jazz icons like Cecil Taylor, Henry Threadgill, and Anthony Braxton, akLaff is known for his dynamic and evolving approach to drumming. His deep-rooted tradition in avant-garde music fuels the trio's rhythm section, adding a high level of energy and complexity to the music.

Keith Price, a Canadian-born guitarist now based in New Zealand, completes the trio with his adventurous harmonic and textural sensibility. Price’s style, shaped by jazz, folk, and experimental music, adds a unique flavor to the group. As an educator at Auckland University, he brings a wealth of knowledge and creativity to the band, with his atmospheric, lyrical guitar playing creating a perfect complement to Cain’s piano and akLaff’s percussion.

Exploring the Sound of Poetry Legroom

The origins of Zoo Too Trio trace back to Cain's musical bond with akLaff in New York’s vibrant jazz scene, with Price joining later to complete the group’s distinctive lineup. “We wanted to explore the sonic possibilities of this specific instrumentation,” says Cain. “Each of us brings different musical backgrounds, yet we share overlapping sensibilities. We knew we could create something truly unique together.”

Poetry Legroom features compositions from all three members, pushing the boundaries of contemporary jazz. Highlights include the evocative atmospheres of "Winter Fog Morning" and "Waxing Gibbous," the rhythmic drive of "Alligator Kangaroo," and the lyrical elegance of "Waltz for Gwen," written by Ron Blake. Over the course of nine tracks, Zoo Too Trio crafts a bold and exploratory sound that defies genre expectations.

Produced and mixed by Michael Cain, the album was recorded in Brooklyn, NY, and embraces a fresh approach to the jazz trio format. Notably, the absence of a bassist creates new harmonic and rhythmic possibilities, allowing for adventurous interplay between the trio members. This dynamic interaction results in an album that is both accessible and emotionally resonant, while maintaining a fearless, boundary-pushing spirit.

Joe Lovano and Marcin Wasilewski Trio Release Homage – A Journey of Jazz Exploration

Renowned saxophonist Joe Lovano and the Polish Marcin Wasilewski Trio have joined forces once again for their highly anticipated second album on ECM, Homage. Following the success of their 2020 release, Arctic Riff, this new project delves deeper into the expressive interplay and expansive improvisation that has become a hallmark of Lovano’s work. Recorded during the group’s 2023 Village Vanguard residency, Homage reveals the seamless development of fluent structures and spontaneous, free-flowing creativity among the quartet.

With over ten-minute tracks that feature Lovano's original compositions, Homage is a powerful display of the quartet’s explorations in both structured and free improvisation. Lovano, often shifting between tenor saxophone, tárogató, and percussion, creates a dynamic listening experience, with the album capturing the musicians' live chemistry and the raw, organic beauty of their musical dialogue. “It felt like we were one,” says Lovano about his connection with drummer Michael Miskiewicz during the recording.

A Natural Musical Dialogue

Building on their deep musical bond, the quartet’s connection has only grown stronger since their first collaboration. “We connected with Joe right from the start,” says the trio. “He’s the kind of musician who jumps into the moment and plays along with whatever he hears, which matches how we approach music.” Over the years of touring together, their mutual openness and spontaneity have fostered a rich, fluid communication between them, both on stage and in the studio.

The title track, Homage, is particularly notable, as Lovano originally wrote it for the 2023 ECM celebration at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, in honor of Manfred Eicher’s 80th birthday. Lovano’s composition, a tribute to the legendary ECM founder, was performed alongside a star-studded lineup, including Dave Holland, Anouar Brahem, and Ralph Towner. The piece is a reflection of Lovano’s lifelong admiration for ECM’s artistic legacy, and he notes that the composition was created purely from emotions, with no written notes: “It’s just feelings written in a sequence of events.”

Exploring Modal Shifts and Free-Wheeling Improvisation

Two extended compositions, Golden Horn and This Side – Catville, exemplify the quartet’s commitment to long-form improvisation. Golden Horn is a modal exploration that blends shifting tides between the musicians, with Miskiewicz’s steady pulse and Wasilewski’s melodic exploration leading the way. The piece calls to mind the trio’s earlier work with the late Tomasz Stanko, as heard in September Night (released in 2024), where similar improvisatory dialogues were featured.

The twelve-minute This Side – Catville takes even more creative liberties, with the quartet engaging in spontaneous exchanges through swinging bars and harmonic shifts. Wasilewski’s delicate keyboard work creates a striking contrast to Lovano’s bold and intricate saxophone phrases, underscoring the quartet’s heightened sense of responsive improvisation.

Spontaneity and Tradition: A Harmonious Fusion

The album also includes a surprising and deeply expressive take on Love In The Garden, a composition by Polish violinist Zbigniew Seifert. The quartet’s treatment of the 70s electric original transforms the piece into a fluid ballad, demonstrating the group’s ability to blend spontaneity with tradition. “It was a spontaneous choice – no discussion about how or what to play. We just went for it,” Marcin recalls. Lovano adds, “The heart and soul of the music is found in playing ballads, and that’s what we did—creating it as we played.”

A Harmonious Quartet: Chemistry at Its Best

As the album’s title suggests, Homage is a fitting tribute to the musicianship of Joe Lovano and the Marcin Wasilewski Trio. The flawless chemistry between the quartet is evident throughout the album, with each track showcasing their intuitive understanding and collective improvisational skill. The album was recorded at the legendary Van Gelder studio in New Jersey and mixed at Bavaria Musikstudios in Munich, with production by Manfred Eicher.

Tracklist for Homage

  1. Homage
  2. Golden Horn
  3. This Side – Catville
  4. Love In The Garden (Zbigniew Seifert)
  5. Improvised Miniatures

Produced by Randall Poster (known for his work on The Wolf of Wall Street, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and School of Rock) and Stewart Lerman (who’s collaborated with artists like Elvis Costello and Sharon Van Etten), Birdly Serenade is part of the GRAMMY-winning Birdsong Project. This ongoing project, which highlights the intersection of music and bird conservation, has already featured contributions from a diverse array of musicians, including Yo-Yo Ma, Mark Ronson, and The Flaming Lips.

Murray's Birdly Serenade comes at a time when the Birdsong Project has gained momentum, collaborating with key partners like the National Audubon Society, Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, and more to raise awareness for bird conservation efforts.

Randall Poster on David Murray’s Impact

GRAMMY Award-winning producer Randall Poster shared his thoughts on Murray’s album, saying, “The Birdsong Project is honored to present this birdly serenade by David Murray and his genius quartet. Inspired by a world of birds, the music on these recordings is overflowing with Murray magnificence. David’s writing and playing are incomparable. He and the band take flight again and again, like the birds we love.”
