Award-winning jazz bassist, composer, educator, and mentor Marion Hayden has been named the 2025 Kresge Eminent Artist, an esteemed honor considered metro Detroit's highest arts recognition. This annual award, accompanied by a $100,000 prize, highlights individuals who have significantly impacted the region’s cultural community throughout their careers.

At 68, Marion Hayden is the 17th recipient of this prestigious award, established in 2008 to honor artists whose lifetime achievements have contributed to Detroit's rich cultural landscape. As the third jazz musician to receive the award, Hayden joins the ranks of the legendary Tribe members Wendell Harrison and the late Marcus Belgrave, both of whom Hayden has closely collaborated with and learned from throughout her career.

Hayden’s early rise to national prominence began as a co-founder of the groundbreaking, Grammy-nominated jazz group Straight Ahead. The all-female ensemble made waves in the late 1980s when they became the first all-female jazz group signed to Atlantic Records. Their success played a pivotal role in launching the career of violinist Regina Carter, a MacArthur Genius Grant recipient. Straight Ahead continues to perform around Detroit and beyond.

Over the years, Hayden has collaborated with an impressive roster of jazz and soul greats, including DeeDee Bridgewater, Kirk Lightsey, Steve Turre, Jon Faddis, Kamau Kenyatta, and Gregory Porter, among many others. Hayden’s remarkable versatility has earned her recognition not only in jazz circles but also in the broader music community.

In addition to her performance career, Hayden’s impact extends to education and mentorship. She serves as the Geri Allen Collegiate Lecturer at the University of Michigan's Department of Jazz and Contemporary Improvisation, a position named after the late Detroit musician Geri Allen. She also teaches at Oakland University, where she continues to inspire the next generation of jazz artists.

As part of her 2025 Kresge Eminent Artist Award, a short film celebrating Hayden’s legacy will premiere on the Detroit PBS affiliate on March 31, 2025. Additionally, a monograph detailing her contributions to Detroit's cultural scene will be distributed to the public free of charge. Manu Dibango’s Lost Live Performance from 1982 Released: "Dibango 82"

Wewantsounds is releasing Dibango 82 an unreleased live recording by Manu Dibango taped in Marseille, Dec 1982. The electrifying live performance features the African legend alongside his stellar 8-piece group, blending funk, jazz, and African rhythms. Highlights include “Africa Boogie” and “Waka Juju.” This album released in partnership with INA and Soul Makossa, Dibango’s label captures the African legend at the top of his game. Remastered from the original tapes with liner notes (Eng/Fr) by Graeme Ewens  and concert organiser Christian Ducasse, both present at the gig, it features a front cover shot by key African Paris-based photographer Bill Akwa Bétotè

Manu Dibango, who passed away five years ago at 86, is one of the most celebrated African musicians alongside Fela, Miriam Makeba and Youssou N’dour. In a career spanning six decades, Dibango revolutionised African music and had a worldwide hit in the process in the form “Soul Makossa” in 1972. This live album, recorded during a French tour in 1982 came at a critical time when France, after the election of Francois Mitterrand, was embracing its multi-ethnic sensitivity. Through the rise of FM radios such as Radio Nova, an offshoot of cult magazine Actuel, the French music scene suddenly got much more opened. The “Sono Mondiale” as Nova would call World music, was born.

Organised by French producer Martin Meissonnier, the sold-out tour created a stir in France bringing together two legends, Manu Dibango and his group plus iconic jazz traveller Don Cherry, which Meissonnier had closely worked with in the late 70s (Cherry doesn’t appear on this set but will soon in a 2nd volume)

Captured on December 22, 1982, at the Théâtre La Criée in Marseille, Dibango 82 delivers an electrifying concert of African rhythms, jazz, and funk mastery, with a pinch of Latin music, led by Dibango accompanied by a stellar ensemble of musicians: Congolese guitarist Jerry “Bokilo” Malekani, drummer Brice Wassy, percussionist Valery Lobe, three of his most trusted partners, together with Jean-Pierre Coco on percussion, Hary Gofin on bass, pianist Del Rabenja from Madagascar and two superb background singers, Florence ‘Titty’ Dimbeng and Sissy Dipoko. The set opens with a traditional Cameroonian song “Migilbawe” sung by the two female singers a-capella before moving on to three Dibango classics stretched out here for maximum pleasure: “African Boogie” featuring a superb solo by Bokilo Malekani and Hary Gofin, “Ashiko Oumba” and the vibrant “Waka Juju” featuring a jaw-dropping percussion solo. As Graeme Ewens, who was on the tour, noted in his liner notes, “Manu's African Sound is a strong rhythmic and melodic unit. Super-polyrhythms, jazz-funky bass and keyboards, Congolese guitar provide a physically moving accompaniment to his own horn playing.”

The audio from the French INA archives has been remastered from master tapes and the album’s liner notes by Graeme Ewens are augmented by an introduction from French photographer Christian Ducasse who organised the concert. Last but not least the front cover features a superb shot by cult Paris-based Bill Akwa Bétotè who documented the Paris 80s African music scene making Dibango 82 an event for all Manu Dibango and African music fans.

Keepers of the Eastern Door: Chris Cheek's Homage to Harmony and Heritage

As European settlers pushed westward from the Atlantic coast, the Mohawk people, the easternmost tribe of the Iroquois Confederacy, earned the title “Keepers of the Eastern Door” for their role in protecting their lands from encroaching colonizers. This historical struggle between those who live in harmony with nature and those who exploit it remains ever-relevant.

In his upcoming album Keepers of the Eastern Door, acclaimed saxophonist and composer Chris Cheek channels this dynamic. The album's cover, featuring Edward Curtis' photograph The Kutenai Duck Hunter, evokes these themes of balance, as a lone canoeist gazes toward an uncertain future in the reflection of the water.

Cheek’s musical exploration, set for release on May 23, 2025 via Analog Tone Factory, delves deep into this cultural and ecological tension. The album features a remarkable quartet, with Cheek joined by guitar legend Bill Frisell, bassist Tony Scherr, and drummer Rudy Royston. Together, they craft a sonic journey that spans captivating originals alongside covers from diverse artists, including The Beatles, Henry Purcell, and Olivier Messiaen.

The concept for Keepers of the Eastern Door was inspired by another Curtis photograph of Native Americans in Canyon de Chelly. Cheek, who grew up in St. Louis, felt a profound connection to the natural world and the tension between it and the industrialized society he later inhabited. The album's title reflects this dichotomy, as Cheek explores the idea of preserving traditional ways of life that are deeply in tune with nature.

Recorded live to analog tape at New York’s Power Station studio, the album perfectly embodies the modernist/traditional balance it seeks to capture. With Frisell’s unique sound and Cheek’s lyrical saxophone, the quartet explores the richness of the natural world through a blend of classical, jazz, and contemporary influences. Masterfully recorded by James Farber and mastered by the legendary Bernie Grundman, the album’s analog warmth and depth echo its thematic soul.

Cheek’s three original compositions, including the opener Kino’s Canoe, provide a window into his creative process, mirroring popular melodies to create fresh, intricate works. The album offers a sense of spiritual communion with nature and a reflection on how we’ve lost touch with it. Cheek sums it up, “I think it’s a parallel world that supports the one we can touch but can’t always describe.”

About Chris Cheek:

Chris Cheek is widely regarded as one of the most innovative and expressive saxophonists in contemporary jazz. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1968, Cheek has played alongside legendary musicians such as Paul Motian, Charlie Haden, Steve Swallow, and Bill Frisell, earning a reputation for his lyrical playing, distinctive sound, and deep emotional resonance.

Known for his ability to subvert expectations, Cheek combines a graceful lyricism with moments of unexpected intensity, capturing a wide range of emotional expression. His work as both a sideman and leader has made a lasting impact on the modern jazz scene. With a discography that includes albums such as Saturday Songs, I Wish I Knew, and Blues Cruise, Cheek’s music blends the traditions of jazz with a forward-thinking, almost spiritual approach.

A long-time member of Paul Motian's groups and co-leader of bands like Rudder, The Bloomdaddies, and Reeds Ramble, Cheek has proven to be a versatile force in the jazz world. He has also performed and recorded with prominent big bands, including those of Dafnis Prieto, Alan Ferber, and Miguel Zenon. His playing has been described as both gentle and deeply subversive—just when the listener feels comforted by the melody, Cheek introduces a twist that challenges expectations.

Cheek’s approach to music goes beyond technique—he believes in the emotional connection to sound and how it can resonate with listeners on a deeper, almost spiritual level. This connection is evident throughout his latest project, Keepers of the Eastern Door, which finds him exploring themes of nature, culture, and the balance between the two through a deeply personal and expressive musical journey.

Remembering Roberta Flack: A Legacy of Soul, Jazz, and Timeless Music

With great sadness, the world mourns the passing of legendary singer and songwriter Roberta Flack, who recently passed away at the age of 88. Renowned for her emotive voice, musical versatility, and unforgettable ballads, Flack’s career spanned over five decades and left an indelible mark on the music industry. As fans around the globe reflect on her incredible contributions to soul, jazz, and R&B, her legacy remains one of unparalleled artistry and grace.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Born on February 10, 1937, in Black Mountain, North Carolina, Roberta Cleopatra Flack displayed an early interest in music. Her classical piano training began at an early age, and by the time she was a teenager, she was already impressing audiences with her remarkable vocal ability. Flack later studied music education at Howard University in Washington, D.C., where her talent for both classical music and jazz began to shine.

It was at Howard University that Flack’s career took its first major step forward. Her first major break came when she was invited to perform at a club in Washington, D.C., where she was discovered by jazz saxophonist and bandleader, Cannonball Adderley. This led to her signing with Atlantic Records in the 1960s.

A Career That Defined Multiple Genres

Flack's music was always marked by an effortless blend of soul, jazz, and R&B, creating a sound that was all her own. However, it was in the early 1970s that Flack would become a household name. Her breakthrough came with the release of her 1973 album Killing Me Softly, which featured the iconic title track. The song, written by Lori Lieberman and later made famous by Flack, became an instant classic. Flack’s deeply emotional interpretation of the song—coupled with her beautiful, tender delivery—cemented her status as one of the most powerful voices in American music.

Her rendition of Killing Me Softly went on to become one of her biggest hits, winning the Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 1974. It topped the charts for weeks and remains one of her most beloved songs. The power of this song was not only in the lyrics but also in Flack’s ability to connect with the listener on a deeply emotional level.

Flack’s musical versatility was also demonstrated through her 1972 hit, The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, a breathtaking ballad that she brought to life with unparalleled tenderness. Originally written by Ewan MacColl, Flack’s version became a chart-topping smash, earning her the Grammy Award for Song of the Year in 1973.

Her deep, soulful voice also graced other hits like Where Is the Love? (a collaboration with Donny Hathaway), Feel Like Makin' Love, and If I Ever See You Again. Each of these songs further showcased Flack’s ability to blend the nuances of jazz with the emotional depth of soul and R&B.

An Advocate for Social Change

Beyond her musical talent, Flack was also a passionate advocate for civil rights and social justice. She used her platform to speak out against inequality and discrimination and was deeply committed to empowering women and minorities. Her influence extended far beyond her musical career, as she became a symbol of strength and grace for those advocating for change.

Flack’s philanthropic work included support for education and causes that elevated marginalized voices in the arts. She believed in the power of music to inspire, heal, and unite, and she devoted herself to sharing that belief throughout her life.

Lasting Impact and Legacy

Flack’s musical legacy continues to resonate with new generations of listeners. Her timeless songs remain a staple of jazz, soul, and R&B playlists, and her artistry continues to inspire countless musicians across the world. Even as she transitioned to fewer performances in her later years due to health complications, Flack’s music never lost its power to captivate and move audiences.

In addition to her Grammy wins, Flack received numerous honors over her career, including being inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame and the Grammy Hall of Fame. Her songs will forever be remembered for their depth, emotion, and elegance.

Flack’s passing marks the end of an era in American music, but her voice, her influence, and her enduring contributions to music will never be forgotten. As fans around the world grieve her loss, they are also left with a remarkable catalog of songs that showcase her unparalleled ability to turn music into something timeless and extraordinary.

A Lasting Goodbye

Roberta Flack leaves behind a legacy that will continue to resonate through the ages. Whether she was delivering heart-wrenching ballads, timeless love songs, or soul-infused melodies, Flack’s music will always be a reminder of her artistry, her commitment to her craft, and the power of her voice to touch lives.

Rest in peace, Roberta Flack. Your music will live on, forever echoing in the hearts of fans and music lovers worldwide.

Charles A. Kelly Releases Phase II – A Transformative Album of Spiritual and Musical Growth

R&B/Jazz keyboardist Charles A. Kelly pushes the boundaries of contemporary jazz with his sophomore album Phase II, released on February 21. A deeply spiritual and transformative work, it marks the second chapter in a planned trilogy. Kelly wrote, produced, and arranged ten tracks that explore personal growth, innovation, and connection. The third single, Raindrops Under Glass, blends classical orchestrations, African rhythms, and movie score melodies, and was also released on Friday.

Kelly’s 2022 debut, You’re Not Alone, laid the groundwork for the trilogy, establishing the present moment in contemporary jazz. Phase II serves as a bridge, pushing the genre’s boundaries and offering an experimental exploration of its potential future. The final chapter, a double album, will further evolve the genre.

"My mission for this album is to stretch the current boundaries of contemporary jazz," said Kelly. "For the music to grow, we must boldly create songs that reach and connect with a wider audience."

Phase II opens with the energetic "That Groove," featuring a horn-powered groove driven by bassist Jerome Randall and drummer Billy “Shoes” Johnson. Other highlights include SunSeeker, a joyful and travel-inspired track that peaked at No. 4 on the charts, and City Night, which reflects Kelly's experiences performing in Philadelphia's nightclubs. Bring It to Compliance incorporates fusion, adding electric guitar and intense rhythms, while Feathers In Flight draws inspiration from the film American Beauty, symbolizing the beauty found in life's simplest moments.

The album also features the bold and empowering Amanirenas, named after a powerful queen from the Kingdom of Kush, and I Only Want You, a song inspired by love, faith, and the protection of God. When We Are One, set to release as the fourth single on April 15, explores the deep connection in relationships, and the final track, Song For Sharlise, is a deeply personal solo piano composition written in memory of Kelly’s late daughter.

Other contributing musicians include GRAMMY-winning percussionist Munyungo Jackson, drummers Tony Moore and Land Richards, and guitarist James Greene.

Kelly, a seasoned artist who has worked with Stevie Wonder, Elton John, and CeCe Winans, continues to make his mark with this evolving musical trilogy. For more information on Phase II, visit www.charlesakelly.com.

Janiva Magness Releases Powerful 17th Album Back for Me with Collaborator Dave Darling

Renowned blues artist Janiva Magness has unveiled her highly anticipated 17th album, Back for Me, produced by her longtime collaborator and friend, Dave Darling. This emotionally rich album reaffirms her unparalleled ability to connect with the heart of the blues while continuing to redefine her iconic sound.

Back for Me features a collection of carefully chosen, lesser-known songs by notable artists such as Bill Withers, Ray LaMontagne, Allen Toussaint, Doyle Bramhall II, Tracy Nelson, and Irma Thomas. As Magness herself notes, “I have always been into the B-sides. There’s a freshness to doing a B-side rather than a well-known hit. I absolutely love the idea of shining a light on material that people are not familiar with.” This fresh approach highlights the deep emotions embodied in Magness' captivating voice and music, making it a must-listen for her devoted fans.

Janiva Magness’ Back for Me – A Journey Through Blues, Soul, and R&B

With her signature emotional delivery, Magness brings a dynamic range of music, from the Chicago-via-Texas grit of “Masterpiece” (featuring a searing guitar solo from Joe Bonamassa), to the gospel-soul-funk of Bill Withers’ “The Same Love That Made Me Laugh,” and the haunting resignation in Doyle Bramhall’s “November.” The album also features powerful contributions from guest artists such as ace guitarists Sue Foley, Jesse Dayton, and the unmistakable guitar work of Bonamassa.

Back for Me marks a milestone in Magness’ career, following the success of her Grammy-nominated album Love Wins Again and her seven Blues Music Awards, including the 2009 B.B. King Artist of the Year Award. Her poignant memoir, Weeds Like Us, which recounts the traumas of her youth and her hard-earned triumphs, also further solidified her place as a resilient and celebrated artist.

Back for Me’s Stellar Band and Collaboration

Produced by Dave Darling, the album’s core band includes drummer W.F. Quinn Smith, bassist Ian Walker, keyboardists Sasha Smith and Phil Parlapiano, and guitarists John Schroeder and Robert “Chalo” Ortiz. Other standout guest musicians on the album include blues harp player TJ Norton and the aforementioned guest guitarists, making this a powerhouse of talent.

Magness credits the band’s chemistry for helping bring a unique and intimate feel to the album. “We tracked together live,” she says. “That’s one of the reasons that it sounds as solid as it does. These guys have worked together on other albums with Dave and other projects, so there’s an automatic intimacy to the backbone of the songs.”

Pray Sue: A Timeless Journey Through Memory, Emotion, and Sound

Ari Joshua’s Pray Sue is a composition that intertwines memory, place, and ancestral motifs, evoking a profound connection to the past. This work sits at the intersection of classical and jazz, drawing from both traditions to craft a sound that is distinctly its own. Inspired by Joshua’s late grandfather and the enigmatic town of Przysucha, the piece unfolds as a cinematic journey through time and space. At its core, Pray Sue channels a classical sensibility, reimagined through a modern lens, creating a unique sonic landscape where orchestral strings, vintage magnetic tape-driven keyboards, and organs merge to create a deeply ethereal experience.

The rhythmic foundation of the composition is anchored by the formidable drumming of Billy Martin, whose intricate percussive work adds depth and complexity. John Medeski’s electric organ textures elevate the composition further, adding layers of analog warmth and color. Recorded at the legendary Applehead Studio in Woodstock, New York, Pray Sue encapsulates the essence of a bygone era when music was crafted with meticulous attention to detail.

The artwork for the release, created by artist Mark Henson, complements the music’s ethereal nature. As Henson describes it, his visual work portrays "winged beings flying to the source," resonating with the sense of journey and transcendence that the composition evokes.

Engineered by Chris Bittner, the recording preserves the intimacy and authenticity of the performances, capturing the nuances of each instrument. The subsequent mixes by Pierre Grill at Rendez-Vous Studios expand the soundstage, inviting listeners into a full sensory experience.

The soulful guitar of Ari Joshua weaves through Pray Sue, bridging the personal and the universal. The dialogue between the guitar and orchestral elements is both delicate and powerful, creating an intimate yet expansive sonic conversation. The track opens with a two-minute prelude, a meditation anchored by Fraticelli’s resonant upright bass, enveloping the listener in delicate textures that evoke a sense of serene isolation. The melodic minor mode infuses the opening with melancholic beauty, resembling a solitary desert landscape.

At the two-minute mark, the music swells as the orchestral strings join the bassline, creating a lush tapestry of sound. The composition builds and ascends, with intricate musical interplay between Joshua and Medeski at the four-minute mark—a particularly electrifying moment that mirrors the intensity of a celestial fireworks display. As the piece draws to a close, the melody undergoes a transformative shift, returning to its introspective beginnings, enriched by the journey undertaken.

The result is a deeply immersive listening experience—one that evokes reflection, connection, and peace.

In a personal note, Ari Joshua reflects on the inspiration behind Pray Sue: “It’s one of those songs that came like a prayer in the wind. I wrote it as part of a batch of songs for John and Billy, but it came after thinking about music I imagine our ancestors would have sung when they wanted to connect to the source. The title comes from the town my ancestors lived in before the Second World War. It’s not a sad song—it’s a minor key, but it is a song for peace.”

Ari Joshua’s Musical Legacy

Joshua’s collaborations with John Medeski and Billy Martin have produced five key releases, including Meeting of the Minds, a meditative, improvisational album; Elephant Walk, a cinematic boogaloo; Dragons Layer, an angular, suspenseful sonic journey; Country Stroll, a laid-back country-infused jazz track; and Let’s Do It Right Now, a tribute to Elvin Jones. These works showcase the trio’s synergy, demonstrating a diverse range of soundscapes and creative depth.

Adrian Galante to Release Debut Album Introducing Adrian Galante on April 25

Australian-born clarinetist Adrian Galante is set to captivate jazz audiences worldwide with his debut album, Introducing Adrian Galante (Zoho Music), releasing on April 25. The 28-year-old talent joins an exceptional Los Angeles-based quintet featuring pianist Tamir Hendelman, guitarist Larry Koonse, bassist Alex Frank, and drummer Joe LaBarbera, on a collection of eight timeless pieces from the Great American Songbook.

Despite the clarinet being a less commonly featured instrument in modern jazz, Galante has embraced its most influential voices and combined them with his own unique approach. Drawing inspiration from the jazz vocal tradition, Galante likens his intimate clarinet sound to how Bing Crosby revolutionized vocal delivery. "I remember hearing Tony Bennett talk about how Crosby’s closeness to the microphone created a more intimate sound," Galante explains. "I like to approach the clarinet in the same way."

This connection to vocal intimacy shines through in his music, where he masterfully navigates a wide emotional range. As music critic Will Friedwald points out in the album’s liner notes, “When most musicians play a song, they’re content to play only the music. Adrian, however, plays the whole song.”

Galante’s deep understanding of his instrument is evident in his renditions of classic jazz songs. On tracks like Cy Coleman and David Zippel’s “With Every Breath I Take,” he brings a touch of melancholy, while his version of Cole Porter’s “It’s Alright with Me” showcases his haunting tone. He also brings a unique twist to Mancini and Bricusse’s “Two for the Road,” using his clarinet to evoke a sense of romance and adventure, while his version of “You’re All the World to Me” showcases his ability to swing with a vibrant and bold edge.

It’s rare to encounter a new jazz musician with such a distinct and fully developed voice—particularly on an instrument like the clarinet. Introducing Adrian Galante marks a promising beginning for a bright future in jazz, earning a place in collections of discerning listeners.

Born in Perth, Western Australia, on October 24, 1996, Galante was raised in a classical music family, with a grandfather who was an opera singer. Though his parents loved pop music, it was jazz’s lively rhythms that caught his attention early on. At age seven, Galante was drawn to the clarinet and started lessons. By 15, he was already performing professionally.

Galante’s musical journey led him to the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts, where his studies eventually took him to New York University’s summer program. In 2022, he made the permanent move to New York, seeking to further his jazz career in the heart of the genre’s scene.

In August 2022, Galante performed with Tamir Hendelman in Seattle, leading to further collaboration. Hendelman recruited top Los Angeles musicians Larry Koonse, Alex Frank, and Joe LaBarbera to join Galante in recording his debut album, with Galante serving as producer.

The result is Introducing Adrian Galante, a stunning introduction to what promises to be a remarkable career for this young clarinetist. To celebrate the album release, Galante will perform at Birdland in New York City on Sunday, June 1, at 5:30 PM.

Bob James and Dave Koz Announce “Just Us” Album and Spring Tour

Two of instrumental music’s most iconic figures, Bob James and Dave Koz, will be embarking on a U.S. tour this spring in support of their upcoming duet album, Just Us, set for release on March 7 via Just Koz Entertainment. The “Just Us” tour will feature an intimate performance of piano and saxophone, showcasing the raw, acoustic beauty of their collaboration. The tour kicks off in James’s hometown of Traverse City, MI, on March 13 at The Alluvion and will include a performance at Lincoln Center in New York City on March 20, wrapping up on April 1 at Seattle’s Jazz Alley. See full tour itinerary below.

The album was recorded in Traverse City, MI, where James and Koz stripped away all the bells and whistles of a traditional studio setting, leaving only the purest form of music: just the piano and saxophone. Koz, known for his smooth saxophone stylings and mastery of contemporary jazz, shared his enthusiasm about the project: “Recording this album with Bob James was one of the greatest life (and music) experiences for me – I learned so much from this treasure of a man. This duet project is just acoustic piano and saxophone, in all their raw beauty. Talk about being vulnerable! But with Bob at the piano, all concern goes away…like playing on a bed of clouds. I can’t wait to perform these songs with him in front of a live audience.”

James, a jazz legend and influential figure in instrumental music, also reflected on the experience: “This is a totally unplugged and, as partner Dave points out, vulnerable set. Both he and I have had the good fortune to record many times with great rhythm sections and sophisticated production. This time out all that is stripped away, and it’s just us. We hope the intimacy of these musical one-to-one conversations conveys the spirit we both felt. It was a unique opportunity for me to collaborate and be inspired by the passionate romanticism of my duo partner.”

Bob James is a Grammy-winning pianist, composer, and arranger known for his groundbreaking work in jazz and smooth jazz. His influence on the genre has been far-reaching, with over 30 albums to his name. James is renowned for his distinctive blend of jazz, classical, and R&B, and he has collaborated with an impressive roster of artists, including Grover Washington Jr., Earl Klugh, and David Sanborn. His composition Angela, the theme song for the television show Taxi, remains one of his signature pieces. James’s music has shaped the sound of contemporary jazz, earning him both commercial and critical acclaim.

Dave Koz is a celebrated saxophonist and one of the defining figures of contemporary jazz. Known for his smooth, melodic playing, Koz has released over a dozen albums and earned multiple Grammy nominations throughout his career. His collaborations with top artists such as Luther Vandross, Barry White, and Kenny Loggins have further solidified his status as one of the genre's most beloved performers.
