Stacey Kent & Danilo Caymmi Present A Tribute to Tom Jobim at The Town Hall – April 12, 2025

A Celebration of Bossa Nova’s Legacy and a Benefit Concert for Instituto Dara

Join Grammy-nominated jazz singer Stacey Kent and renowned Brazilian musician Danilo Caymmi for a one-of-a-kind tribute to the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim. A Tribute to Tom Jobim will take place at The Town Hall in New York on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at 7:00 PM. This special concert celebrates the 30th anniversary of Jobim’s passing, honoring his timeless bossa nova compositions, including iconic songs like "The Girl from Ipanema," "Wave," "Corcovado," and more.

A Historic Tribute to Jobim’s Musical Legacy

Antonio Carlos Jobim, one of Brazil’s most influential composers, transformed the global music scene in 1964 with the release of “The Girl from Ipanema,” making bossa nova a global sensation. His alluring compositions blended nature's mysteries with the bittersweet nuances of romance, all set to rhythmic melodies that remain unmatched. Now, 30 years after his death, A Tribute to Tom Jobim brings together two of his most devoted collaborators: Danilo Caymmi, a close friend and band member of Jobim, and Stacey Kent, a platinum-selling jazz singer known for her collaborations with Brazilian masters.

This exclusive performance at The Town Hall will benefit Instituto Dara, a nonprofit organization dedicated to combating poverty and supporting families in need in Brazil. The concert is also the first in Dara's “The Art of Brazil” series, which celebrates Brazil’s cultural richness while spotlighting the pressing social issues the institute addresses.

The Connection Between Jobim and the Caymmi Family

The Caymmi family, with Danilo as a key member, shares a deep historical connection with Jobim. Danilo’s father, Dorival Caymmi, was a legendary Brazilian composer, and Danilo’s siblings, Nana and Dori Caymmi, are renowned musicians in their own right. Danilo’s musical journey with Jobim began at the young age of 16, playing flute on the iconic album Caymmi Visits Tom and Brings His Children. He continued his collaboration with Jobim as a member of his band from 1983 until the composer’s passing in 1994.

“Tom was a really special person,” says Danilo. “I learned so much from him, both musically and personally.”

Stacey Kent: A Voice Made for Bossa Nova

Stacey Kent, praised for her expressive vocal timbre and deep connection to bossa nova, will join Danilo Caymmi on stage for this unforgettable evening. As a jazz singer with a vast international career, Kent’s voice perfectly complements Jobim’s music, blending delicate emotion with elegance. The New York Times has described her voice as “tart, silky” and praised her “no-nonsense directness.” Kent’s repertoire, often steeped in Brazilian jazz, includes collaborations with renowned Brazilian artists such as Marcos Valle and Roberto Menescal. Her 2013 album The Changing Lights features three Jobim classics and showcases her deep bond with Brazil’s musical heritage.

A Unique Performance Format

Unlike traditional jazz concerts, A Tribute to Tom Jobim will feature a unique lineup of musicians, with no piano, bass, or drums. Instead, the ensemble will include three flutists (including Danilo Caymmi himself), acoustic guitar, cello, and the tenor saxophone of Kent’s husband and musical partner, Jim Tomlinson. This stripped-down arrangement will allow the beauty and intimacy of Jobim’s music to shine through in its purest form.

Musicians:

  • Stacey Kent (vocals)
  • Danilo Caymmi (vocals)
  • Jim Tomlinson (tenor saxophone)
  • Flavio Mendes (acoustic guitar)
  • Annalissia Cecilia Martinez-Villavicencio (cello)
  • Aaron Irwin (flute)

Jobim’s New York Connection

Although Jobim’s heart was always in Rio, New York played a crucial role in his career. In 1962, he performed at Carnegie Hall as part of a gala bossa nova concert, and it was in Manhattan that "The Girl from Ipanema" was recorded in 1963, turning Jobim into an international star. His New York residency continued until his death in 1994, cementing his profound connection to the city.
