MTO originated when Bernstein was asked by the late Hal Willner to be the music director for the 1930s jazz “territory” band in Robert Altman’s film Kansas City. Over the years, the band’s repertoire expanded from ’20s and ’30s swing standards to bold, genre-defying interpretations of music by The Beatles, Charles Mingus, Sly Stone, and Prince. The 3 Cohens: A Family Bond Through Jazz

The all-star family jazz trio, The 3 Cohens—comprising Anat Cohen (clarinet), Avishai Cohen (trumpet), and Yuval Cohen (soprano saxophone)—has always found time to reunite despite their individual successes as soloists and bandleaders. Growing up in Tel Aviv, the siblings developed an innate musical connection, making improvisation a natural part of their interplay. Over a decade, they released four studio albums: One (2003), Braid (2007), Family (2011), and Tightrope (2013), with the latter three released under Anzic Records, the label Anat co-founded with producer Oded Lev-Ari. Their chemistry was so remarkable that DownBeat featured them on its January 2012 cover, praising their "alchemy, telepathy, and chemistry."

A decade later, The 3 Cohens reunited for a special collaboration with Germany’s esteemed WDR Big Band, an ensemble with a storied history of performing jazz since 1957. This partnership, featuring arrangements by Lev-Ari of compositions by each Cohen sibling, along with fresh renditions of Gerry Mulligan’s "Festive Minor" and Louis Armstrong’s "Tiger Rag," resulted in the live album Interaction. Branford Marsalis Reimagines Keith Jarrett’s Belonging in His Blue Note Records Debut

Renowned saxophonist Branford Marsalis, one of jazz’s most influential artists, is set to make his highly anticipated Blue Note Records debut with Belonging, releasing on March 28. The album is a full-length interpretation of Keith Jarrett’s groundbreaking 1974 ECM recording of the same name, originally introducing the pianist’s European Quartet. This marks Marsalis’ first new release since 2019 with his celebrated longstanding quartet—pianist Joey Calderazzo, bassist Eric Revis, and drummer Justin Faulkner. The lead track, “Spiral Dance,” is now available for streaming and download.

A Personal Journey into Belonging

Marsalis recalls that in 1974, when Belonging first came out, his musical interests lay elsewhere. “I was a freshman in high school, listening to R&B,” he admits. “I didn’t even know Belonging existed.” That changed when he deepened his jazz studies. Initially familiar only with Jarrett’s solo piano works, Marsalis was introduced to the European Quartet’s sound by pianist Kenny Kirkland. “We were on a plane in the ’80s when Kenny put his headphones on my ears and played [Jarrett’s 1979 album] My Song,” he recalls. “When he tried to take them back after five minutes, I slapped his hand away. When we got to the next city, I bought every album by that band.”

The idea to record Belonging in full took root while preparing their 2019 album, The Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul, which featured “The Windup” from Belonging. “We were all listening to ‘The Windup’ for the last record, and Revis suggested we record the whole album—it’s just that great, and we could really do something special with it.” When the pandemic delayed their plans, the group reconvened with the same enthusiasm once it ended.

Honoring the Original, Without Imitation

Marsalis’ approach to Belonging follows his philosophy on reinterpreting jazz classics, as he has done with works by Charles Mingus, the Modern Jazz Quartet, and John Coltrane. “On the composition ‘Belonging,’ I naturally played some of the things Jan Garbarek did on the original,” he says. “But we never intended to make a tribute album. I always focus on the entire record, not just the saxophone parts, and the most striking thing about Belonging is how seamlessly it all fits together.”

Unlike Jarrett’s European Quartet, which came together for the first time in the Belonging sessions, the Branford Marsalis Quartet has a long-established rapport. With Revis joining in 1996, Calderazzo in 1999, and Faulkner in 2009, their deep musical chemistry allows for an unparalleled level of interplay. “The biggest advantage we have is 50 years of history and experience that Keith’s band didn’t have at the time. We’ve been able to absorb and process all of that.”

Marsalis sees his group as more akin to a chamber ensemble than a traditional jazz band. “The whole purpose of this group is to create a level of cohesion and interplay that feels organic,” he explains. “At the end of the day, what any audience wants is a great melody and a compelling rhythm. No matter where our journey takes us, as long as we keep that essence, people will come along for the ride.”

He’s also shared the stage with contemporary jazz royalty over the last decade. Having cultivated his talents in and out of the studio, now at age 25, Huna feels that the time is right to take the next step as a young emerging artist on the contemporary jazz scene. On February 10, he’ll release “Just Right” as a single to preview his forthcoming “Heart and Soul” album, which he plans to release this summer on Mirage Records. 

Huna wrote and produced “Just Right,” a deep pocketed R&B groove constructed by bassist Darryl Williams and drummer Gorden Campbell. Keyboardist Carnell Harrell adds melodic shading that buttresses Huna’s tenor sax. Throughout the track, Huna’s impassioned play exhibits maturity and restraint. His horn work is cool and confident, soulful and sultry.     

“I’ve always felt that rhythm lives inside of me. One of my favorite ways to feel that is for me to play it out onstage or write it out in the studio. I knew there was something special about this song when I felt the need to dance to it in my studio every chance I got. I selected the song title thinking that every piece of this recording, from the saxes and instrumentation to writing the best song I could, had to be ‘just right,’” said the Palm Springs, California-born and bred Huna. 

“Heart and Soul” will be Huna’s fourth album and he’s crafting the collection with the intention of injecting a jolt of fresh energy, youth, and creativity into jazz. The set will showcase his amalgam of R&B, jazz, pop, and soul. Huna’s focus is on the song, serving and nurturing each one while exploring the unique nuance of every harmony and melody that make up his compositions. 

"This new album is so special to me, and I feel that the title says it all. It’s been a fulfilling experience writing and recording every song on this project and it all truly comes from the heart. I’m excited to share the new music. My hope is to share my passion and convey the same feeling I have when playing music with anyone who appreciates the joy music brings,” said Huna.

 

At fifteen, Huna released his Oliver-produced debut single, “On The Chase.” The cut ended up serving as the title track to Huna’s debut album, which dropped in 2017. A year later, Brown helmed Huna’s third single, “U Best Believe.” During those formative years, Huna focused on learning the art of record production. His first self-produced disc, “Life of the Party,” released in 2020 followed a year later by “Life of the Party Volume II.” Both projects spawned radio singles and airplay, which helped Huna’s audience multiply. The saxman continued to keep the company of genre stars by performing with Peter White, Rick Braun, Marc Antoine, Brian Simpson, and Eric Darius, and hit the stage at the Newport Beach Jazz Festival, Catalina JazzTrax Festival, and Brian Culbertson’s Napa Valley Jazz Getaway.

 

Outside of jazz, Huna frequently performs alongside folk/rock singer-songwriters Al Stewart, Ambrosia, John Ford Coley, and Walter Egan.

Tony Holiday Revives Memphis Soul-Blues with a Genre-Bending New Album, Keep Your Head Up

Tony Holiday has been at the center of a Memphis soul-blues revival anchored by a contingent of young, savvy, well-schooled musicians with a "family-like" attitude and a strong belief in one another.

Over the past couple of years, Holiday has been touring hard, taking spells in between to write and record with Producer Eric Corne in Memphis and Los Angeles. The result is the forthcoming album, Keep Your Head Up, out April 18, 2025, via Forty Below Records. Pre-order here. The album demonstrates an impressive command of styles, as Holiday leads his band fluidly through Texas, Chicago, and hill country blues with plenty of Memphis soul and even a touch of Afrobeat.

The album features a wide array of special guests, including Eddie 9V, Kevin Burt, Albert Castiglia, and Laura Chavez, last year's Blues Music Award winner for 'Guitarist of the Year' with Holiday shining throughout on vocals and harmonica.

The latest single, "Walk on the Water," was a surprise addition to the record. Another knock-out song by Eric Corne that was inspirational. "I think Walk On The Water will pleasantly surprise people as much as it surprised me." Pre-save here.

The album opens with the Freddie King classic "She's A Burglar," a gripping Texas Blues featuring good pal Eddie 9V on lead guitar and sharing vocal duties. Next is the intense Chicago blues-flavored "Twist My Fate," written by Corne, featuring Holiday's stellar harmonica work and shared vocal duties from the incomparable Kevin Burt. 

Holiday and Corne turn "A Woman Named Trouble" on its head with a fascinating Afrobeat flavor, including a riveting trumpet solo by occasional E Streeter Mark Pender before locking into some greasy Memphis soul compliments of regular collaborator AJ Fullerton on "Good Times."

Laura Chavez, last year's Blues Music Award winner for 'Guitarist of the Year' turns in a fabulous performance on the soulful, horn-laden "Shoulda Known Better" before the album shifts to a modern take on hill country blues with "Walk On The Water," written by Corne who also sings a bluegrass style harmony throughout, adding a unique flavor to the track.

Other album standouts include fan favorite Albert Castiglia joining Holiday with some spirited guitar and vocals on the playful Snooks Eaglin classic "Drive It Home," and Holiday shows why he's one of the finest harmonica players on the scene today, despite electing not to play the instrument on over half the songs on the album. 

The record closes with a brilliant surprise, a bittersweet country soul Americana song called "I Can Not Feel The Rain," written by Holiday with help from Corne and Jad Tariq, who plays the role of Steve Cropper throughout this record. 

There's something in the water in Memphis, and Tony Holiday has tapped into it to contribute to an exciting new chapter unfolding in this storied region.
