Over the last four albums, Pachy García — aka Pachyman — has carved out a cult following by diving deep into the DNA of dub reggae. With analog precision, vintage gear, and a reverent nod to legends like King Tubby and The Scientist, his music has echoed through the underground with undeniable warmth and authenticity.
But with his upcoming fifth album, Another Place, due out via ATO Records, Pachy isn’t just building soundwalls anymore — he’s building worlds.
Beyond Dub: Finding His Own Voice
Recorded in his basement haven Studio 333 House, Another Place is the sound of Pachyman turning inward, then exploding outward. While his heart still beats to the rhythm of dub, this album transcends labels, weaving in threads of vaporwave, soul-jazz, krautrock, and the raw pulse of post-punk. Think William Onyeabor meets ESG meets Washed Out, all filtered through an unmistakably Caribbean lens.
Pachy reflects:
“I needed to break out of this formalist dub reggae purist mindset to find a more personal sound… I wanted to build my own world.”
That vulnerability shows. Whether it’s the blissful haze of “In Love,” the krauty shimmer of “Berlin,” or the emotional gravity of “False Moves” — inspired in part by the Gaza conflict — the album pulses with both innovation and honesty.
Repetition, Reinvented
Though rooted in loop-based traditions, Pachyman isn't repeating himself. From ambient moments reminiscent of Boards of Canada to drum-and-bass-inspired repetitions, his sonic palette has expanded without abandoning the minimalist spirit of dub. Even his vocals have grown bolder, taking on a mantric, meditative role — especially on album opener “Calor Ahora,” penned during an anxiety episode in L.A.'s “cold” winter.
