KYN: A Global Sound Journey of Three Powerful Female Voices

Album Release Date: January 24, 2025

Label: ears&eyes Records

In a world where boundaries often divide, KYN—a unique trio of vocalists—brings together a harmonious convergence of global voices, creative freedom, and artistic exploration. Their debut album promises to be a vibrant mosaic, blending diverse musical traditions with a free-spirited approach to sound-making. KYN is set to release their first full-length album on January 24, 2025, under the independent label ears&eyes Records, and it is already generating excitement within the global music community.

KYN: Three Voices, One Unifying Sound

KYN is composed of three exceptionally talented women, each bringing a unique set of experiences, influences, and cultural backgrounds to the ensemble. The trio features Yoon Sun Choi, Hanna Schörken, and Noa Fort, whose collective sonic exploration has already earned praise from critics and fans alike.

  • Yoon Sun Choi—a Korean-Canadian artist now based in the U.S.—brings a rich musical journey to KYN, starting as a classical pianist and later transitioning to jazz vocals. Her career has taken her to prestigious venues like The Blue Note and Carnegie Hall, and her ability to blend classical precision with jazz improvisation and pop influences has helped shape KYN's dynamic sound.

  • Hanna Schörken, hailing from Germany, adds a distinct experimental edge to the trio. With a focus on avant-garde jazz vocals and experimental improvisation, her approach is deeply influenced by literature and global travel. Hanna’s rich, narrative-driven performances push the boundaries of vocal expression, making her an invaluable voice in the ensemble.

  • Noa Fort, an Israeli-born artist now based in New York, adds yet another layer of complexity to KYN's music. A classical pianist turned jazz vocalist and band leader, Noa has collaborated with artists such as William Parker, Mat Maneri, and Chad Taylor. Her dual role as a musician and creative arts therapist also brings an emotional depth and healing resonance to the trio's improvisational approach.

Together, these three voices form a collective entity that transcends geographical and musical boundaries, creating a sound that is as exploratory as it is unified. Despite the vast distances between them, with Hanna residing in Germany and Yoon Sun and Noa based in Brooklyn, the trio's rare reunions spark a musical alchemy that defies the limitations of time and space.

The Sound of KYN: Uninhibited, Joyful, and Unpredictable

KYN's music is defined by a spirit of uninhibited creativity and an unorthodox approach to vocal expression. The trio’s debut album has been described as a “joyful and talkative meeting of opinionated and eccentric extraterrestrial pixies,” with music that is “beautiful and sensual, unpredictable and funny.” The album blends a wide array of musical elements, from the structural complexity of classical music to the improvisational freedom of jazz, the catchy hooks of pop, and the avant-garde experimentation of boundary-pushing sound art.

In a review from Salt Peanuts, a pan-Nordic web-based journal dedicated to strong improvised music, the album is praised for transcending familiar genre boundaries, offering a truly original listening experience. Each track on the album takes listeners on a journey through various textures, moods, and sonic landscapes, creating a sense of spontaneity and excitement.

KYN's music does not adhere to traditional song structures. Instead, the trio allows their voices to intertwine in a free-flowing, organic way, often taking unexpected turns and creating moments of delightful unpredictability. This dynamic approach results in a sound that is both playful and profound, pushing the limits of vocal improvisation while maintaining an undeniable sense of beauty and sensuality.

The Debut Album: A Sonic Exploration

The debut album from KYN is a sonic journey through this vibrant fusion of influences. The album's tracks are short, yet highly evocative, giving a sense of a conversation between the voices that is ever-shifting and deeply immersive.

Tracklist:

  1. One Stop Pop – 2:11
  2. Resign The Throne – 3:33

  4. Traces – 6:07
  5. Wicca Dance – 4:33
  6. Fun House – 3:58
  7. Spelunking – 5:44

The album begins with "One Stop Pop", a short but punchy track that sets the tone for the trio's playful exploration of sound. From there, the album moves through a series of dynamic tracks, each offering a distinct vibe and emotion. The energetic "Resign The Throne" contrasts with the more meditative and expansive "Traces", while "Wicca Dance" and "Fun House" showcase the trio’s ability to create intricate, layered harmonies and rhythmic complexity.

The music of KYN feels alive—always shifting, evolving, and never static. Each track offers a different window into the trio's creative minds, blending whimsy, abstraction, and elegance into a seamless whole.

A Live Performance to Remember

KYN’s live performance at Main Drag in Brooklyn in 2023 was recognized as one of the best improvised music performances of the year by Musical Path, a contemporary music magazine. This recognition speaks to the extraordinary chemistry and improvisational skill of the trio, as well as their ability to connect with the audience in a deeply impactful way.

Together, these four musicians have become pillars of Switzerland’s vibrant music scene, bringing their distinct voices and cohesive chemistry to this remarkable album.

A Journey into Nature and Sound

The making of Water Tower is as much a story of place as it is of music. The album was recorded in the intimate, cozy studio of bassist Fabien Iannone, nestled in the heart of the Swiss Alps. The studio, situated in a secluded spot amidst chestnut trees, became the perfect backdrop for the band’s creative process, which included long days of chestnut-picking, fireside meals, and the sound of the wind rustling through the pines.

L'Orage drew deep inspiration from the breathtaking natural landscape surrounding them. The rolling hills, dry stone walls, and crisp mountain air became catalysts for the music, infusing the album with an organic and atmospheric quality. The result is an elegant fusion of rhythms, melodies, and ballads that evoke the magic and mystery of nature itself. Over the course of eight years, L'Orage has honed its sound, moving freely through the intricate paths of jazz and expanding their creative expression with each release. On Water Tower, the quartet finds a perfect balance between freedom and cohesion, staying true to their organic approach while exploring new sonic territories.

The album’s arrangements flow seamlessly, showcasing the interplay between the individual members. Ganesh Geymeier’s tenor saxophone breathes life and lyricism into the music, while Robin Girod’s guitar adds texture, warmth, and versatility. The rhythm section, made up of Nelson Schaer’s intuitive drumming and Fabien Iannone’s resonant bass lines, provides a steady foundation that allows the group to move freely while maintaining a magnetic sense of unity.

"Cherry Peach" – A Funky New Joint Featuring Ari Joshua, John Medeski, Billy Martin, and Jason Fraticelli

Music Factory Records has released a funky, soul-infused track titled "Cherry Peach" on November 8th, featuring a stellar lineup of jazz and funk heavyweights, including composer and guitarist Ari Joshua, keyboard virtuoso John Medeski, legendary drummer Billy Martin, and bassist Jason Fraticelli. The track, recorded at the famed Applehead Recording Studio in Woodstock, NY, combines the raw energy of classic funk with a fresh, modern edge.

A Dream Collaboration

Ari Joshua, the composer and guitarist behind "Cherry Peach," reflects on the recording experience as a dream come true. "Working with John and Billy was a dream realized," he shares. "I’ve admired Medeski, Martin & Wood since my high school days. The session at Applehead, with Chris Bittner and Michael Birnbaum at the helm, was both creatively immersive and comfortable." Joshua recalls Billy Martin’s humorous remark that he’d have enough music to enjoy for a lifetime after the session. “Billy joked afterward that I’d have enough music to enjoy for a lifetime, or as he put it, more than I would know what to do with. Both Billy and John were brilliant. Some of the things they said and the way they contributed will impact me for the rest of my life. ‘Cherry Peach’ captures the unique energy and connection that was prevalent during the entire session—there are no bad songs, it's all solid gold."

The Track: A Retro Groove with Modern Polish

"Cherry Peach" opens with John Medeski’s soulful organ lines, laying the foundation of a deep, swampy funk groove that hits hard from the first note. As the track progresses, Ari Joshua’s Hendrix-inspired fuzz guitar solo blends effortlessly with a cascading melody that propels the song forward. The chemistry between the musicians is palpable—Billy Martin’s inventive drumming and Jason Fraticelli’s resonant bass work together to create a rhythm section that drives the track while allowing room for creative expression.

Adding extra layers to the track is Jeff Fielder, guitarist for Painted Shield, the Indigo Girls, and Duff McKagan, who helped polish the final version in the studio. Fielder’s contribution adds a playful, bouncy energy, elevating the track’s dynamic, infectious spirit.

Ari and Jeff are also working on a series of re-imagined versions of their songs, with "Cherry Peach" being just one of the tracks undergoing this creative treatment. An original unedited quartet version of the song will be released at a later date, offering listeners a different take on the track.

The Engineering Team and Visuals

The track’s lush, textured sound is the result of a skilled engineering team. Recorded by Chris Bittner at Applehead Recording, mixed by Jeff Fielder at Oliver Blue Studio in Mount Baker, WA, and mastered by Ed Brooks at Resonant Mastering, the track boasts a rich, dynamic soundscape. Monte Mitchell from Forest Shore Designs created the complementary visuals for the promotional video, perfectly capturing the vibe of "Cherry Peach."

Cédric Hanriot’s “Ego Chase” from Time is Color Vol. 2: A Fusion of Hip-Hop and Jazz

Cédric Hanriot’s track “Ego Chase,” featured on his upcoming album Time is Color Vol. 2, is a captivating fusion of hip-hop and jazz, showcasing the unique stylistic blend that defines Hanriot’s artistry. The track not only highlights his skillful composition and arrangements but also carries an important message about the complexities of human nature. “I wanted to express that human beings are multifaceted,” says Hanriot. “It’s difficult to sum up a person in a few attributes, and it’s these very attributes that create attraction, mystery, and connection between individuals—ultimately, this is part of the magic of life.”

As one of the most versatile musicians of his generation, Hanriot has worked alongside icons like Herbie Hancock, Robert Glasper, and Terri Lyne Carrington, contributing to GRAMMY-winning projects and earning a reputation as a sought-after pianist, composer, sound designer, and arranger. Now, with Time is Color Vol. 2, Hanriot presents a deeply personal and artistic evolution of his sound, following the success of his Time is Color project released in 2022. The first volume of the project garnered critical acclaim and even earned a spot on former U.S. President Barack Obama’s coveted summer Spotify playlist that year.

The Evolution of Cédric Hanriot’s Sound

Time is Color Vol. 2 is a natural progression from Hanriot’s previous work, delving deeper into the fusion of modern jazz with elements of hip-hop, funk, soul, and electronica. Tracks like “Comforting Glow” carry the echoes of jazz great Bill Evans, while others, like the high-energy “A Luminous World Part 2,” bring in powerful vocals from U.S. singer Tony Moreau.

One of the standout moments on the album is “Ego Chase,” where Hanriot is joined by British saxophonist and rapper Soweto Kinch, whose head-nod verses complement the track’s blend of jazz rhythms and hip-hop flow. Kinch’s involvement was something Hanriot envisioned from the moment he started writing the song. “When I created ‘Ego Chase,’ I knew I wanted Soweto’s unique style to be part of it,” Hanriot shares. “His voice perfectly captures the essence of what the track is about—human complexity and the journey of self-discovery.”

In addition to Kinch, Time is Color Vol. 2 features contributions from some of the most exciting voices in contemporary music, including American MCs JSWISS and Charles X, as well as saxophonist and singer Braxton Cook, who adds a soulful touch to the album’s rich musical landscape. French narrators Arthur H and Cyrielle Clair provide beautiful spoken word on tracks like “La Source” and “La Barque Du Temps,” while Swiss trumpeter Erik Truffaz delivers a stunning performance on “A Luminous World Part 1.”

A Journey of Spiritual and Musical Exploration

For Hanriot, Time is Color Vol. 2 is more than just an album—it’s a reflection of his personal and spiritual growth. “In recent years, I’ve delved deeper into my spirituality, influenced by a wide range of encounters, books, experiences, and reflections,” he explains. “Quantum physics has started to shed light on some of life’s mystical phenomena, and I believe that spirituality and quantum physics are not opposing forces. They are two expressions of the same underlying reality. This insight became a crucial catalyst for the album.”

The album is dedicated to the people who have enlightened Hanriot along his spiritual journey, and he hopes the music will resonate with listeners, bringing them the same positive energies that have guided him. “We are energy, music is energy, and life is magic,” Hanriot says. “I hope that this album helps people tap into that magic, through its vibrations and its messages.”

A Groundbreaking Musical Experience

Time is Color Vol. 2 explores new sonic territory while staying deeply rooted in the jazz tradition. The album’s eclectic mix of genres, its fearless experimentation, and its stellar guest appearances position Hanriot as one of the most innovative and exciting musicians working today. Tracks like “Ego Chase” are a testament to his ability to fuse genres in unexpected ways, creating a sound that is uniquely his own.

With Time is Color Vol. 2, Hanriot proves that his musical journey is far from over—he continues to push boundaries, challenge conventions, and create art that speaks to both the heart and the mind. The album is a must-listen for anyone who appreciates music that is as thought-provoking as it is sonically captivating.

As Hanriot says, "The proof is in the listening," and with Time is Color Vol. 2, listeners are sure to discover a rich and rewarding musical experience that transcends genres and touches on universal truths about life, energy, and connection.

Brazilian Pianist Ricardo Bacelar and Cellist Jaques Morelenbaum Explore the Beauty of "Aracati"

Brazilian
pianist Ricardo Bacelar and cellist Jaques Morelenbaum are ready to share the magic of their latest musical collaboration with the release of their new album, Aracati. Dropping on January 31, 2024, this unique 10-song collection draws inspiration from the serene coastal town of Aracati, Ceará, Brazil, where the duo immersed themselves in the natural beauty and cultural richness of the region.

Having worked together on various recordings over the past couple of years, Bacelar and Morelenbaum decided to combine their creative forces in a truly special way: they spent a week in Aracati, a cliffside enclave on Brazil’s Northeast coast, where they composed new music together. The result is Aracati, an album that fuses Brazilian rhythms with jazz and classical elements, featuring nine instrumentals and one vocal track.

Immersed in Nature: The Creation of Aracati

During their time in Aracati, Bacelar and Morelenbaum played and composed music surrounded by the breathtaking landscape of dunes and sea. Bacelar set up a small studio in their rented house, where they spent hours creating melodies inspired by their environment.

"I brought the electric piano, Jaques brought the cello, and we just immersed ourselves in the beauty of Aracati," Bacelar recalls. "We spent the week surrounded by nature, talking, playing, and composing. It was pure inspiration."

Their time together yielded several tracks for the album, including the first single, "Fogueira", which is available now along with a video that captures the essence of their collaboration (watch it here: Fogueira Video).

The album features Bacelar on acoustic piano, keyboards, vocals, accordion, Hammond organ, and percussion, with Morelenbaum contributing on cello, acoustic piano, and keyboards. Together, with percussionist Hoto Júnior and drummer Luiz Orssano, they created lush rhythms and melodies that reflect the joy and tranquility of their surroundings.

Featured Tracks on Aracati

  • "Correios": A classic from Morelenbaum's repertoire, this piece was originally featured in the Academy Award-nominated film Central Station (1999) and serves as the perfect opener for the album.

  • "Fogueira": Inspired by a bonfire on the beach in Aracati, this spirited track celebrates the influence of iconic Brazilian composer Egberto Gismonti.

  • "Quando a Noite Vem": A sultry bolero written by Bacelar and Giuliano Eriston, featuring Bacelar's vocals and Morelenbaum’s emotive cello.

  • "Fi_Ru_Hay_Kay": Morelenbaum wrote this piece after imagining a bird named Firu. The composition reflects the bird’s tentative exploration, capturing the sounds of nature.

  • "Caminhos de Areia": Bacelar’s second single from the album, released on December 13, tells the story of a cowboy’s spiritual journey. Watch the video here: Caminhos de Areia Video.

  • "Milagres": Inspired by an unlikely adventure, when Morelenbaum’s belongings were swept out to sea but miraculously retrieved by a local fisherman.

  • "Sargaço": A sprawling, seaweed-inspired tale that sweeps through the lush tropical region.

  • "Voo da Graúna": A tribute to the native graúna birds of Aracati, with Bacelar and Morelenbaum capturing the flight of these birds in music.

  • "Falésias": A stunning, melancholic composition inspired by the sand formations shaped by wind, rain, and the sea.

  • "Ar Livre": Morelenbaum’s reflective closing track, which offers a melancholy but grateful conclusion to the album.

A Collaborative Journey

Bacelar and Morelenbaum first met in 2022, and their collaboration has grown ever since. Bacelar, a renowned pianist and producer, has worked with some of Brazil's most iconic musicians. Morelenbaum, based in Rio de Janeiro, is known for his work with Antonio Carlos Jobim, Sting, and David Byrne. The two musicians have built a creative partnership that blends their diverse musical backgrounds into something truly special.

"The beauty of this project is in the collaboration and the stories that the music tells. It’s about the connections we made in Aracati, both with each other and with the environment around us," Bacelar reflects.

Aracati—Available January 31, 2024

Aracati is a stunning example of what can happen when two musicians connect deeply with each other and their environment. From the rolling hills of Ceará to the beaches of Brazil’s northeast, the album captures the essence of their journey—one of collaboration, nature, and inspiration. With the first two singles already available, anticipation for the full album is high.

Don't miss out on this extraordinary album. Aracati will be available on all streaming platforms and digital stores on January 31, 2024.

Will Downing: Luscious - A New Chapter in the Prince of Sophisticated Soul’s Legacy

After five decades in the music business, 28 studio albums, and an endless catalog of chart-topping hits, Will Downing—the iconic "Prince of Sophisticated Soul"—is set to release his latest offering, Luscious. Known for his rich baritone voice and timeless contributions to soul and R&B, Downing’s new project marks a bold new chapter in his illustrious career. Rather than sticking to a predetermined concept or format, Luscious is a deeply personal and intimate exploration of Downing’s artistry, built from the heart and driven by his pure love for music.

A New Era: Luscious and the Freedom to Express

For Downing, Luscious represents a newfound freedom. After decades of producing hits for the masses, he’s decided to focus on what feels right—what resonates with him emotionally. Luscious is less about following trends and more about crafting an album that reflects his personal musical journey, his feelings, and his love for his fans. The album is a six-song EP that taps into Downing’s influences and honors the tradition of the deep baritone crooners he admires, all while maintaining a fresh, contemporary sound.

As he puts it, “what comes next… I have to feel,” and Luscious is a testament to that philosophy. With each track, Downing offers a taste of something both familiar and new, capturing the essence of what made him a soul legend while pushing the boundaries of his own creativity. It’s clear that Luscious is a love letter to both his fans and to the music that has shaped his life.

The Power of Love – A Heartfelt Opening

The journey begins with the single “The Power of Love”, a track that is both a reminder and a celebration of the love we share with one another. While the title might sound familiar, this is not a cover of the classic hit by Huey Lewis & the News. Instead, Downing’s version offers an original take that showcases his ability to transform even the simplest themes into soulful, sophisticated expressions of emotion.

Collaborating once again with his long-time bandmate and guitarist Randy Bowland, Downing delivers a sweet, whisper-soft ballad that encapsulates the essence of love in a world that often feels chaotic. The track’s soothing harmonies provide a peaceful retreat, with Downing’s baritone taking center stage as he delivers every lyric with tender care. It’s a song that invites you to slow down, breathe, and appreciate the healing power of love.

Paying Tribute to Two Soul Legends: Jon Lucien and Johnny Hartman

As a member of the small but mighty fraternity of deep baritone crooners, Downing has always been conscious of those who came before him. For Luscious, he chose to honor two of his greatest influences: Jon Lucien and Johnny Hartman.

Jon Lucien, the British Virgin Island soul legend, is remembered for his smooth voice and poignant contributions to the world of smooth R&B. On Luscious, Downing reimagines Lucien’s classic 1973 track “Rashida”, delivering a version that will surely make Lucien smile from above. With the sweet saxophone work of Marion Meadows adding texture, Downing takes the listener on a soulful journey, milking each note for passion and emotion, much like the original, while adding his own personal touch to the timeless track.

Similarly, Downing’s cover of the classic jazz standard “In the Wee Small Hours (of the Morning)” calls to mind the work of Johnny Hartman, particularly his iconic collaborations with John Coltrane. With lush string arrangements leading into a smoky jazz quartet setting, Downing channels Hartman’s emotional depth, particularly through the smooth interplay between his voice and the saxophone work of Tim Cunningham, who channels the spirit of Coltrane. This is not Downing’s first homage to Hartman, having previously paid tribute to him with a stunning rendition of “My One and Only Love” on his 2019 album Romantique, Pt. 1. On Luscious, Downing once again dives deep into crooner mode, showcasing the versatility and range of his baritone voice.

The Heartfelt Forever More and the Funky Sugar on the Floor

Other standout tracks on Luscious include “Forever More”, a beautiful ballad with roots in the 1995 supergroup Urban Knights. Written by Downing’s bandmate Mike Logan, Sr., the track is a smooth, soulful journey about a heartbroken man trying to make things right. Downing’s delivery is a masterclass in emotional vulnerability, with the harmonica bridge, courtesy of Howard Levy, adding a sweet touch of nostalgia.

Meanwhile, Luscious takes an unexpected turn with the funky and upbeat “Sugar on the Floor”. Originally written in the mid-‘70s by Kiki Dee and covered by a range of artists from Elton John to Etta James, Downing’s version brings a fresh take on the classic. The song’s metaphor is open to interpretation, but its underlying theme of love and tenderness shines through in Downing’s interpretation. The song is a reminder of the joy that comes with surrendering to love, and Downing’s heartfelt delivery makes it a standout track.

Reinventing a Dance Classic: Mama Used to Say

Perhaps the most daring track on Luscious is “Mama Used to Say”, a re-imagining of the 1980s dance anthem by Junior. Partnering with keyboardist and entrepreneur Marcus Johnson, Downing takes the upbeat classic and slows it down into a soulful groove that adds depth and wisdom to the original. This version of the song is a reflection on the timeless advice mothers give to their children, offering a sense of reflection and reverence for the guidance passed down through generations. The track is a beautifully nuanced expression of Downing’s musical freedom, showing that even familiar tunes can be redefined when placed in the hands of a true artist.

Luscious as a Love Story

Ultimately, Luscious is a love story. It is the love that Will Downing has for his music, his fans, and the deep baritone tradition that has shaped his career. With this new release, Downing proves that he is still at the top of his game, making music that he truly believes in. The album is a triumph of expression, filled with heart, soul, and passion. As Downing himself puts it, if you listen closely, you will not just “hear” the music, but you will “feel” it.

Luscious is now available, and it is undoubtedly one of Will Downing’s finest works to date—a true masterpiece that showcases his enduring love for soul music, his artistry, and his legacy as one of the greatest baritone crooners of all time.

Daniel Casimir: Balance - A Bold New Chapter for the UK Jazz Scene

London-based bassist Daniel Casimir takes a giant leap forward in his musical evolution with his new album, Balance, out now on Jazz Refreshed. This ambitious LP showcases his remarkable ability to blend past and present influences while remaining at the forefront of the vibrant contemporary UK jazz scene. Balance is available on vinyl and is already garnering attention for its innovative approach and all-star ensemble.

A Fusion of Tradition and Innovation

With Balance, Casimir steps away from his earlier work, embracing a larger, more expansive sound that calls back to the big-band jazz era while incorporating the experimental energy of the current generation of UK jazz musicians. The album is an impressive amalgamation of skittish rhythms, intricate arrangements, and lush melodies, drawing on a broad spectrum of musical influences. There’s a notable influence from the broken beat genre, blending its characteristic rhythm-driven style with more traditional jazz instrumentation. This makes the album feel both fresh and timeless—a stunning synthesis of the old and new.

The Ensemble: A Dream Team of Talent

One of the defining features of Balance is the all-star lineup that Casimir has assembled. The album brings together some of the brightest stars from the UK jazz scene, each contributing their unique flavor to the mix. Featured prominently are:

  • Binker Golding: A saxophonist known for his electrifying live performances, Golding’s contributions on reeds are integral to the album's expansive sound. His work here strikes a balance between intensity and subtlety, effortlessly guiding the music from one emotional peak to the next.

  • Nubya Garcia: Another heavyweight in the contemporary UK jazz scene, Garcia’s saxophone adds a dynamic, soulful layer to the music. Her powerful, emotive playing provides a perfect counterpoint to the intricate rhythms and melodies.

  • Rosie Turton: A trombonist who has been a standout figure in the UK's jazz and experimental scenes, Turton brings a deep, resonant warmth to the album's brass section, enriching the overall texture.

  • Cassie Kinoshi: Best known for her work with Seed Ensemble, Kinoshi’s saxophone and compositional contributions are integral to the album’s adventurous spirit, tying together its diverse elements and providing a unique sense of cohesion.

Additionally, the album features the mesmerizing vocals of Zola Marcelle and Ria Moran, whose contributions add an additional layer of complexity and beauty to the album’s overall sound.

Strings, Vocals, and Rich Textures

Balance is also notable for its lush use of strings, a key element that elevates the jazz elements to new heights. The strings soar alongside the jazz instrumentation, creating a powerful juxtaposition of traditional and contemporary elements. This fusion of orchestral sounds with the fluidity of jazz is something that sets Casimir's work apart and shows his willingness to experiment and break new ground.

The album also features standout tracks with vocals from Marcelle and Moran, whose voices complement the instrumental arrangements in a way that feels both modern and cinematic. Their vocal work brings an emotional depth to the album, adding another layer of expressiveness to an already rich composition.

Track Highlights: Exploring Balance

The album's title track, Balance, sets the tone for the record, with its intricate rhythms and soaring brass and strings. It encapsulates the album’s theme of finding harmony between contrasting elements—something Casimir himself seems to be grappling with as an artist.

Other standout tracks include:

  • "Just A Little Bit": A funky, rhythm-heavy track that nods to broken beat influences but is unmistakably jazz. The groove is infectious, and the interplay between the brass and rhythm sections is top-notch.

  • "I’ll Take My Chances": This track is a high-energy, adventurous piece that leans into the more experimental side of jazz, with rapid changes in mood and texture.

  • "You Know": A more introspective number, You Know features some of the album’s most delicate and subtle moments, where the interplay between the reeds and strings creates a dream-like atmosphere.

  • "In Search for Goldilocks": A playful and whimsical track that showcases Casimir’s adventurous spirit, combining elements of jazz, funk, and even hints of classical music.

Why Balance is Essential Listening for Jazz Fans

Balance is one of the most ambitious and genre-defying albums to come out of the UK jazz scene in 2024. Daniel Casimir has created a work that feels both forward-thinking and deeply rooted in tradition. His ability to blend complex rhythms, a wide range of textures, and diverse instrumental voices makes this album a standout in the world of contemporary jazz.

For fans of the genre and the UK jazz scene in particular, this album is an essential listen. It’s a project that pushes the boundaries of what jazz can be, offering something new and exciting while still honoring the genre’s rich history. The ensemble’s performances are nothing short of exceptional, and Casimir’s leadership as a bassist and composer shines through in every note.

Whether you're a longtime jazz aficionado or a newcomer to the genre, Balance offers a thrilling, multifaceted listening experience that will resonate long after the last track fades out.

Final Thoughts

Daniel Casimir's Balance is a testament to the creativity and innovation that defines the contemporary UK jazz scene. It’s an album that challenges conventions while remaining deeply connected to the roots of jazz, and its expansive sound is sure to captivate listeners for years to come. Whether you’re into big band jazz, broken beat, or avant-garde experimentation, Balance has something for everyone. This album isn’t just a collection of songs—it’s a statement, and one that marks Casimir as one of the leading voices in the evolution of modern jazz.

Randy "Ruffin" Williams: A Soulful Tribute to a Legend and a New Voice in Classic Soul

For many artists, musical influences shape their careers in subtle ways. But for Randy "Ruffin" Williams, his devotion to the timeless music of David Ruffin, lead singer of the Temptations, has been a driving force from a young age. With a mission to preserve the rich legacy of Ruffin’s soulful voice, Randy has carved out his own path in the world of classic soul, blending his deep respect for the past with his unique artistic vision. His dedication to honoring Ruffin’s legacy is evident in his work, especially in his recent EP, which showcases not only his tribute to David Ruffin but also his versatility as an artist who can seamlessly interpret a wide range of musical genres.

The Influence of David Ruffin: A Musical Journey Begins

Born and raised between the soulful communities of West Philadelphia and Willingboro, NJ, Randy Williams was immersed in a rich tapestry of '60s and '70s Motown, rhythm, blues, and soul music. While he absorbed the sounds of artists like Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, and Al Green, it was David Ruffin’s unmistakable vocal style that captured his heart and mind. Ruffin’s ability to convey raw emotion and connect with listeners on a profoundly personal level left a lasting impression on young Randy.

Randy became mesmerized by Ruffin’s voice—its power, vulnerability, and ability to evoke deep emotion in every note. His admiration went beyond the surface; he recognized the technical mastery behind Ruffin's vocal runs, his soul-stirring delivery, and his unique gift for storytelling through music. As Randy grew older, he found himself drawn to the art of vocal performance, dedicating himself to developing his own vocal prowess while striving to honor and emulate his idol’s influence.

This lifelong passion for David Ruffin’s artistry eventually led Randy to create an elaborate stage show that paid tribute to the soul legend, ensuring that Ruffin's influence would continue to resonate with new generations of music lovers. But Randy's talent is not limited to mere imitation—he has evolved into a master interpreter of not just David Ruffin's music, but of classic soul and even Broadway tunes, making each piece uniquely his own.

Randy Ruffin's New EP: A Masterful Tribute and Artistic Evolution

Randy’s new 5-track EP marks a significant milestone in his career, as it showcases his vocal range, artistic versatility, and dedication to soul music. The EP is a testament to his growth as an artist, blending classic soul influences with modern sensibilities, and proving that Randy is not only an admirer of the past, but also an innovator in his own right.

Tracks That Define Randy Ruffin’s Range

"You Sure Love to Ball" – Marvin Gaye (1973)

One of the standout tracks on the EP is Randy’s interpretation of Marvin Gaye's “You Sure Love to Ball”. Gaye's 1973 hit is a soulful ballad that requires a vocalist to capture the same depth of emotion Gaye famously conveyed, and Randy does not disappoint. His rendition brings a fresh vulnerability to the track, while retaining the sensual and intimate qualities that made the original so powerful. Randy’s voice flows effortlessly through the melody, paying homage to the late, great Marvin Gaye while imbuing the song with his own unique style.

"Baby I'm Yours" – Johnny Ingram

Randy’s take on Johnny Ingram’s “Baby I'm Yours” offers a perfect example of his vocal range and interpretive ability. Ingram’s original was a mid-tempo love song with a smooth groove, and Randy’s version reimagines the track, adding his own soulful touch. Randy’s voice is rich with nuance and emotion, turning the song into an intimate declaration of devotion that resonates deeply with listeners.

"The Warmth of You" – Will Downing

Another gem on the EP is Will Downing’s “The Warmth of You.” Known for his deep baritone and smooth style, Downing’s classic ballad is often considered a cornerstone of soul music. Randy, however, brings a fresh energy to the track, infusing it with a new sense of urgency and passion. His version of “The Warmth of You” showcases his ability to take on soul ballads while making them distinctly his own, offering a modern interpretation of an iconic song.

"Some Enchanted Evening" – Broadway Classic

A surprising but deeply moving addition to the EP is Randy’s interpretation of the timeless Broadway show tune "Some Enchanted Evening" from the musical South Pacific. This track showcases Randy’s vocal versatility, as he moves away from traditional soul music and takes on a classic Broadway number. His interpretation of this beloved song is emotional and grand, with the same depth and resonance that he brings to his soulful material. The track stands as a testament to Randy’s vocal skill and his ability to cross musical boundaries with ease.

"Walk Away from Love" – David Ruffin (Remix)

It’s only fitting that Randy’s tribute to David Ruffin comes at the close of the EP, with a remix of Ruffin’s 1975 hit “Walk Away From Love.” This track serves as both a nod to his idol and a statement of Randy’s growth as an artist. Ruffin’s original version of “Walk Away From Love” is a soul classic, filled with heartache and longing, and Randy’s remix brings the track into the modern era while still honoring the original’s emotional power. It’s a perfect way to close the EP—keeping David Ruffin's legacy alive while giving Randy the space to infuse the track with his own unique voice.

Randy Ruffin: Keeping the Soul Flame Alive

Randy "Ruffin" Williams is more than just a tribute artist—he is a torchbearer for the soulful music of the past and a dynamic force in the world of contemporary soul music. His ability to seamlessly reinterpret iconic tracks from the worlds of classic soul, R&B, and Broadway, while still making each song his own, speaks to his exceptional talent as both a vocalist and an artist. With each new release, Randy shows that he is dedicated to keeping the soul flame burning, ensuring that the music of legends like David Ruffin continues to inspire and resonate with new generations.

As he continues to gather steam with each release, Randy Ruffin’s music offers an exciting glimpse into a future full of even more soulful, powerful performances. His voice, rooted in the traditions of the Motown era and the soul giants before him, is a unique blend of respect for the past and innovation for the future. It’s clear that Randy has only just begun to share his artistry with the world—and there is much more to come from this soulful talent.

A New Voice in Classic Soul

Randy Ruffin’s journey from a young admirer of David Ruffin’s vocal style to a rising star in the soul music scene is both inspiring and awe-inspiring. Through his new EP, Randy has proven that he is not only capable of paying tribute to the legends who came before him but is also capable of shaping the future of soul music on his own terms. With every note he sings, Randy continues to uphold the legacy of David Ruffin while carving out a sound and style that is uniquely his own.

His new music, especially the eclectic blend of classic soul, Broadway tunes, and remixed soul hits, is a clear signal that Randy Ruffin is an artist to watch closely in the years to come.

Benny Barksdale, Jr.: A Soulful Journey Through Music and Legacy

Benny Barksdale, Jr., a Baltimore native, has led a musical career that spans genres, eras, and collaborations with some of the biggest names in music. From his early days as a saxophonist inspired by his drummer father, to his military service in Vietnam, and his later success as a seasoned studio musician and live performer, Barksdale’s journey is a testament to his resilience, versatility, and deep-rooted connection to the soulful sounds of jazz, funk, and soul.

The Early Years: A Musical Legacy Begins

Benny Barksdale, Jr.'s introduction to music began at a young age, thanks to his father, a drummer who played an instrumental role in sparking his son’s passion for music. Barksdale started his musical journey on the saxophone, a natural choice for someone inspired by rhythm and melody. His father’s influence set the stage for Benny’s lifelong relationship with music, and he quickly honed his skills during his high school years.

By the time Barksdale was in high school, he had already formed his own band. This early initiative in leading a group reflected his musical ambition and vision, even at a young age. His foundation in music grew stronger as he developed his playing style and began performing around the Baltimore area, setting the stage for what would become a storied career.

A Pause for Service: Vietnam and the Return to Music

Before Barksdale could fully immerse himself in the music scene, his journey took a detour with his service in Vietnam.
