R&B and jazz saxophonist Mekiel Reuben pays homage to two of his greatest musical influences, Boney James and Kirk Whalum, in his latest single, "Boney Kirk." The track, which was released last month on MekMuse Records, serves as a preview of his highly anticipated tenth album, Something Like That, due for release in March 2025.
Based in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Reuben composed "Boney Kirk" with the distinct sound of these two saxophone legends in mind. With a smooth yet funky midtempo groove, the song combines soulful R&B and cool contemporary jazz elements, reflecting the innovative and fresh style that both Boney James and Kirk Whalum have become known for. Reuben’s deep admiration for the two artists shines through in every note, as he channels their musical influence to craft a tribute that feels both nostalgic and forward-thinking.
"I wrote ‘Boney Kirk’ as part of a collection of melodies I was working on for the new album," Reuben explained. "It’s a joy to think about all the musicians who’ve shaped my music, and these two saxophonists—Boney James and Kirk Whalum—have always inspired me. Their music is timeless, and I wanted to create something that captured their essence: innovation, soul, and swagger."
Produced by David Vasquez, who also contributed keyboards, synth bass, and percussion, "Boney Kirk" features an all-star lineup of collaborators, including guitarist Mauricio Guerrero Jr. and drummer Phil Martin. The track reflects Reuben’s deep respect for the genre, fusing intricate musicianship with a funky groove that invites listeners to move. Additionally, Reuben contributed percussion, adding his signature touch to the composition’s rich texture.
The single is a prelude to Reuben’s forthcoming album Something Like That, which marks another milestone in his illustrious career. The album will feature ten original tracks and showcases Reuben's growth as a musician, songwriter, and bandleader. With his unique blend of jazz, R&B, and funk influences, Reuben continues to carve out a space as one of the most versatile saxophonists of his generation.
Reuben’s musical journey began in Chicago, where he grew up before relocating to the Virgin Islands as a teenager. After spending decades in Los Angeles, he returned to the islands in recent years, where he continues to draw inspiration from both his diverse musical background and the vibrant Caribbean culture around him.
In addition to his solo work, Reuben has a rich history as a performer, having shared the stage with a variety of musical legends. He has toured internationally, performing at jazz, blues, and reggae festivals, and as a sideman, he’s played with notable artists such as Eek-A-Mouse, Ike Turner, The Itals, and Barbara Morrison. As a bandleader, he’s opened for greats like Lenny Williams, Phil Perry, Vesta Williams, Ronnie Laws, The Jazz Crusaders, and Les McCann.
With Something Like That on the horizon, Reuben is poised to continue inspiring listeners with his dynamic sound, a blend of soul, groove, and jazz innovation that speaks to his roots while pushing the boundaries of contemporary music. Stay tuned for more from Mekiel Reuben as he prepares to release his next album and continues to honor the musical legends who shaped his artistic path.
