Finding Beauty in the Broken: Sheldon Agwu’s Kintsugi

London-based guitarist and producer Sheldon Agwu invites us into a deeply personal and philosophical soundscape with Kintsugi, his debut solo full-length album. The project draws its name—and its guiding principle—from the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold, highlighting rather than hiding flaws. For Agwu, Kintsugi is more than a metaphor. It’s a creative manifesto.

Built from a fusion of hip-hop rhythms, ambient textures, and raw guitar loops, Kintsugi is a meditation on vulnerability and authenticity. Agwu channels a wide spectrum of sonic influences—from Andrew Pekler and Jon Hassell to Rick Rubin, Madlib, and more—while crafting a sound that feels uniquely his own. Fans of Massive Attack, Flying Lotus, Jeff Parker, and Meat Beat Manifesto will find a natural resonance here.

But Kintsugi is not just built on beats and loops. It also strips things back to their emotional core. Solo guitar compositions appear in stark relief, and spoken word collaborators lend their voices—unfiltered, unguarded—to create moments of raw human connection. As Agwu puts it, these artists are “constantly living in their truths.”

Self-produced and recorded throughout 2023, the album is the product of both quiet introspection and communal inspiration. Between crate-digging in London’s record shops and reading interviews with creators across disciplines, Agwu spent the year in conversation—with ideas, with records, with people. These connections form the constellation that is Kintsugi, a record that doesn’t aim to be perfect but instead embraces the beauty of what’s real.

“Creativity and imagination,” Agwu says, “are the keys to unlocking the doors to the celestial.”

Quinn & Barrett: A Duo Rooted in Resonance

Vocalist Anna Laura Quinn and guitarist Ed Barrett invite listeners into the warm, intimate soundscape of their New Orleans-based duo, Quinn & Barrett. Since 2018, the pair has nurtured a deep musical kinship—one that truly blossomed during the quiet solitude of the COVID lockdown. Amid isolation, they found solace in each other’s artistry, meeting regularly to create what became their “Anna and Ed Mixtape”—a personal playlist of beloved songs spanning genres and generations.

Their debut album, Just... Quinn & Barrett, marks the first volume of this shared musical journal. Recorded across sessions from May 2023 to May 2024 with esteemed guitarist and producer Brian Seeger, the album presents eleven heartfelt tracks that echo their artistic chemistry and wide-ranging influences.

Blending jazz, pop, folk, and soul, the album pays homage to icons like Ella Fitzgerald, Joni Mitchell, Dr. John, Tears for Fears, and even J.S. Bach. Each track is reimagined through their distinctive lens, capturing both the fireworks of big band energy and the soft intimacy of a whispered duet.

With Just… Quinn & Barrett, the duo uses the spare and expressive format of voice and guitar to draw listeners in close, offering not just a performance but a conversation—a space to feel, reflect, and connect.

About Anna Laura Quinn

With a voice that’s at once rich, clear, and deeply expressive, Anna Laura Quinn is a rising star of the New Orleans jazz scene. Originally from San Francisco, Anna’s musical sensibilities were shaped early by a household filled with the sounds of Ella Fitzgerald, the Beatles, and J.S. Bach.

After earning a BFA in Studio Art from NYU, she followed her muse to New Orleans in 2010 and found her footing as a vocalist in the city’s legendary jazz community. She later earned a Master’s in Jazz Studies from the University of New Orleans, where she honed her chops as a bandleader and arranger.

Anna leads several projects, including her band The Unmentionables, known for their infectious “New Orleans Get Down Music for the People.” She has graced the stages of Snug Harbor, Preservation Hall, Jazz Fest, and French Quarter Fest, steadily earning her reputation as a versatile and compelling performer.

About Ed Barrett

Guitarist Ed Barrett brings soulfulness, nuance, and boundless versatility to Quinn & Barrett. His intuitive playing and stylistic range make him the ideal partner for Anna’s wide-reaching musical explorations. Together, they’ve forged a duo that’s more than the sum of its parts—a meeting of minds and hearts, captured beautifully on Just… Quinn & Barrett.

Charlie Rouse Band’s Brazilian Jazz Classic Cinnamon Flower Gets Deluxe Reissue

Resonance Records is set to release a definitive reissue of Cinnamon Flower, the vibrant 1977 Brazilian jazz album by Charlie Rouse, on July 18, 2025. The deluxe reissue arrives as a limited-edition 2-LP set (1,000 copies on 180-gram vinyl), a deluxe CD, and a digital download, featuring both the original release and — for the first time — the undubbed, unaltered version of the album, as it was originally recorded.

Originally released by Douglas Records, Cinnamon Flower captured Rouse — best known for his 11-year run as tenor saxophonist in Thelonious Monk’s band — blending Brazilian rhythms with soul and swing. The project marked a continuation of his early bossa nova explorations, dating back to 1962’s Bossa Nova Bacchanal.

The original sessions, engineered by George Klabin (now Resonance Records co-president), featured an all-star 11-piece band including Claudio Roditi, Dom Salvador, Ron Carter, and Portinho. Producer Alan Douglas later added overdubs with notable musicians such as Bernard “Pretty” Purdie, Roger Powell, and Clifford Adams, creating a denser, funk-infused mix.

This new reissue presents both versions — the Douglas mix and Klabin’s untouched tapes — plus the previously unreleased track Meeting House by pianist Dom Salvador. All formats include extensive liner notes by acclaimed biographer James Gavin and a heartfelt tribute by Rouse’s son, Charlie “Chico” Rouse, Jr.

"This is one of my favorite recordings," says Klabin. “We’re proud to finally release it in its purest form — a true blend of Brazilian warmth and jazz sophistication.”

Gavin adds, “This release allows listeners to appreciate the artistry of Charlie Rouse beyond his Monk years. His voice, long underrated, shines here with clarity and originality.”

Chico Rouse reflects, “This album was ahead of its time. I hope people now can hear my father’s individuality and his ability to merge his unique voice into an ensemble sound.”

Resonance Records, known for award-winning archival jazz releases, continues its mission of honoring jazz greats through thoughtful presentation and historical depth.

Allen Toussaint’s Southern Nights Returns in a Deluxe 2025 Reissue

A Timeless New Orleans Masterpiece Restored and Remastered

Legacy Recordings has announced the deluxe 2025 reissue of Allen Toussaint’s iconic 1975 album Southern Nights, available June 14, 2025 on vinyl, CD, and digital formats, in celebration of the album’s 50th anniversary. Widely hailed as one of the most imaginative and soulful albums of its era, Southern Nights has been fully remastered and now includes unreleased material, rare photos, and new liner notes honoring Toussaint’s indelible musical legacy.

Originally released by Reprise Records, Southern Nights was both a sonic experiment and a personal reflection for Toussaint. Rooted in the hazy beauty of Louisiana’s bayous and backroads, the album’s dreamlike title track—which Glen Campbell would later turn into a crossover hit—originated as a deeply autobiographical piece reflecting Toussaint’s childhood memories.

This 2025 deluxe edition features:

  • Remastered audio from the original analog tapes

  • Three previously unreleased bonus tracks, including a demo version of “Southern Nights”

  • Liner notes by music journalist Marcus J. Moore

  • Rare archival images and reproductions of Toussaint’s handwritten lyrics

Allen Toussaint, a seminal figure in New Orleans R&B and funk, was the creative force behind hits for Lee Dorsey, Irma Thomas, The Meters, and many more. Southern Nights marked a rare moment where he took center stage as both an experimental composer and soulful storyteller.

“This album is a genre-defying gem,” says Moore. “Southern Nights captures the surreal spirit of the South through Toussaint’s visionary lens. It’s atmospheric, poetic, and utterly unforgettable.”

Lynda Dawn Returns With Deep Grooves and Divine Vibes on “11th Hour”

North West London’s rising soul visionary Lynda Dawn makes a powerful return with her long-awaited sophomore project, 11th Hour — an immersive 8-track journey via her own First Dawn Records. Known for blurring the lines between funk, jazz, soul, and gospel, Dawn’s latest release confirms what early fans already knew: she’s not just one to watch — she’s one to experience.

Anchored by her mesmerizing comeback single “Where You Are” and the luminous title track “11th Hour”, this record explores the emotional terrain of love, longing, and self-awakening. Johnny Mathis: The Voice of Romance Bids Farewell After 70 Years of Musical Magic

On Sunday, May 18, 2025, a chapter in American music history comes to a graceful close. Johnny Mathis, the legendary vocalist whose voice has defined romance and elegance for generations, will give the final performance of his "The Voice of Romance" Tour at bergenPAC in Englewood, New Jersey.

This farewell concert marks the end of an extraordinary 70-year career, celebrating a legacy that spans jazz, pop, soul, Broadway, and Christmas classics.

⭐ A Voice That Defined Generations

Born in 1935 in Gilmer, Texas, and raised in San Francisco, Johnny Mathis showed early talent as both a vocalist and an athlete. While attending San Francisco State College on a track scholarship, Mathis was spotted by a club owner who offered him a singing gig. That led to an audition with Columbia Records in 1956 — and the rest is history.

By the late 1950s, Mathis had become a household name. His breakout hits, including “Chances Are,” “Wonderful! Wonderful!,” “It’s Not for Me to Say,” and “Misty,” made him one of the first African American artists to gain widespread mainstream success across radio, television, and the Billboard charts. He would go on to sell over 360 million records worldwide, placing him among the top-selling recording artists of all time.

His style — smooth, romantic, and emotionally resonant — helped define the “easy listening” genre. But his artistry has always transcended labels. Mathis is revered for his command of jazz standards, film songs, Broadway tunes, classical melodies, and his famously beloved Christmas music, which still dominates holiday airwaves today.

A Legacy of Accolades

Over the course of his seven-decade career, Johnny Mathis has earned:

  • Five Grammy nominations

  • A Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award

  • Three songs in the Grammy Hall of Fame (“Chances Are,” “It’s Not for Me to Say,” and “Misty”)

  • 80 original studio albums

  • Seven Christmas albums

  • Over 50 Adult Contemporary hits

  • A ranking as the No. 6 album artist of all time on the Billboard pop charts

Even more impressively, Mathis has maintained a singular relationship with his label — Columbia Records — making him the longest-signed artist in the label’s history.

The Final Bow in Englewood

The final concert at bergenPAC is not just a performance — it's a celebration of legacy. Mathis’ choice of this intimate, acoustically rich venue for his farewell speaks volumes. While the theater has hosted legends like Aretha Franklin, Tony Bennett, and George Benson, Mathis’ appearance represents a milestone unlike any other.

The evening will include special tributes:

  • A 70-year photo retrospective

  • A Walk of Fame induction

  • A custom photo backdrop for fans

  • A signed set list memento for all attendees

  • The launch of a scholarship in Mathis’ name, supporting aspiring performing artists

And while the spotlight will shine on Mathis one last time onstage, his voice, recordings, and influence will live on for generations to come.

“When I look back at all the love I’ve received through the years,” Mathis once said, “I just feel grateful to have shared my gift with the world.”

Brandee Younger’s Gadabout Season Is a Joyful Meditation on Movement, Healing, and Sonic Discovery

It all started with a word-of-the-day email. Harpist Brandee Younger, bassist-producer Rashaan Carter, and drummer Allan Mednard were on tour when the word gadabout—a carefree pleasure-seeker always in motion—arrived in their inboxes. It quickly became the mantra of their travels, capturing not only the energy of the road, but their broader creative mission: chasing joy through music, food, art, and experience.

That spirit animates Younger’s deeply personal and exploratory new album, Gadabout Season, out June 13, 2025, via Impulse! Records. A Grammy-nominated, NAACP Image Award-winning harpist known for blending jazz, R&B, and hip-hop into her distinctive sound, Younger turns inward on this release. With most tracks written or co-written by her, Gadabout Season is her most revealing work to date—an album shaped by personal challenges, creative rebirth, and a slow, intentional recording process.

“This album reflects the journey,” says Younger, “the search for meaning and beauty amid life’s most complex moments, ultimately emerging with a deeper sense of self.”

Much of that journey unfolded in a cabin in upstate New York, where Younger began writing in solitude before collaborating with Carter and Mednard. Together, they shaped the album in Younger’s Harlem apartment, with Carter engineering and producing from a makeshift home studio. Instead of rushing through a typical studio session, they recorded over several months, letting the music evolve organically.

The results are rich, layered, and emotionally resonant. The title track, “Gadabout Season,” is a playful and inventive blend of harp, vibraphone (Joel Ross), and percussion (Makaya McCraven), with clarinet lines from Shabaka giving the track a whimsical but grounded energy. It reflects what Younger calls her “external personality”—a public-facing joy that often masks deeper reflection.

Other tracks are more introspective. “Surrender,” written for pianist and longtime collaborator Courtney Bryan, channels church music and Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols to explore themes of spiritual release. “BBL” is unapologetically confrontational—a piece Younger describes as a musical argument that pulls no punches. And “Discernment,” featuring saxophonist Josh Johnson, evokes a dreamy soulscape wrapped in dub and psychedelic textures.

The album also showcases the profound influence of Alice Coltrane—not through direct homage, but through spirit. Younger, now the custodian of Coltrane’s restored harp, plays it throughout the album. It took time, she admits, to truly make the instrument her own. “It had to become my own,” she says. “This was not my first time playing the harp, but as this new music was unique to me, I had to become one with it at home.”

There’s also a quiet brilliance in the trio’s synergy—decades of collaboration manifesting in intuitive interplay and shared vision. Carter describes the album’s sound as an Afrofuturist sonic palette, and indeed, Gadabout Season blends tradition and experimentation in thrilling ways.

“When you take a step back and look at what was and what is now,” Younger reflects, “it’s really kind of beautiful.”

With Gadabout Season, Brandee Younger not only expands her own artistic voice but adds a vital new chapter to the Impulse! legacy—an album that reminds us that even in life’s heaviest moments, joy is worth chasing.

Satoko Fujii’s Message Channels Joy, Intensity, and Unmatched Chemistry

Few artists can surprise listeners with every release quite like pianist-composer Satoko Fujii. On Message, her third album with the powerhouse trio This Is It!, Fujii proves once again that spontaneity and deep musical connection can yield extraordinary results. Set to release on May 9, 2025, via Libra Records, Message is a spirited, adventurous journey through the boundless landscape of modern improvised music.

Featuring long-time collaborator and husband Natsuki Tamura on trumpet and the wildly inventive Takashi Itani on percussion, this trio thrives on musical risk-taking and intimate interplay. As Fujii explains, “My compositions are sometimes too serious, but with Takashi, they can be full of humor.” The chemistry is undeniable—an ensemble of fearless improvisers who bring structure, freedom, and raw creativity to every note.

Message kicks off with its title track, a perfect encapsulation of the trio’s sound: compositional precision fused with the unexpected detours of improvisation. Fujii and Itani engage in a percussive dialogue of almost orchestral depth, while Tamura floats above with melodic clarity and conviction.

From there, the album spans a wide emotional and musical range. “Cryptography” weaves together translucent textures and impressionistic lyricism. “Falafel Feast”—a nod to a favorite Berlin eatery—erupts into vibrant collective improvisation before resolving into Fujii’s playful, off-kilter theme. “Ernesto,” inspired by the life of Che Guevara, channels turbulence and conviction, blending gritty trumpet lines with Fujii’s powerful pianism. And “Never Mind” surges with kinetic energy, while the closing track, “Orange Flicker,” dissolves into a meditative shimmer of tone color.

Throughout the album, the trio exhibits the kind of telepathy that only comes from deep listening and shared vision. As Something Else!’s Victor Aaron writes, “You can’t get much closer to improvisational music perfection…telepathy and simpatico are the two main ingredients that elevate her music well beyond the notes.”

Fujii has long been recognized as one of the most original voices in jazz. Her compositions blend jazz, classical, rock, and Japanese folk traditions in a way that is unmistakably her own. With over 100 albums as a leader and high praise from the New York Times, DownBeat, and Cadence, she continues to redefine the possibilities of improvised music.

With Message, Fujii, Tamura, and Itani remind us that sometimes, the clearest artistic statement isn’t just composed—it’s discovered in the moment. And when it hits, we know: this is it.

The Serendipity of “More Light” – Laura Teller’s Unscripted Magic

Sometimes, the best things in music happen by accident.

Singer-songwriter Laura Teller hadn’t planned to record “More Light”—at least, not the version that ended up on her latest album. The song had been through countless iterations with lyrics that never quite felt right. But during a recording session, with unexpected time left and only one more lead sheet in hand, she decided to give it a shot.

She laid down a few takes with a group of stellar session musicians, and just for reference, added a spontaneous scat vocal. The result? Pure magic. That improvised scat felt more honest and alive than any of the lyrics she’d spent months trying to finalize. So that’s what she kept. More Light became a song without words—but not without feeling.

Laura’s journey has always been about heart over polish, instinct over perfection. Born and raised in the suburbs of Philadelphia, her first “gig” was disrupting her family’s Seder at age two with a song of her own creation. Piano lessons came at six (prompted by her mother’s tolerance limit for off-key banging), and by her teens, Laura had already caught the attention of legendary producers Gamble and Huff.

At Yale, she sang in cover bands, led a popular folk/jazz group, and starred in a student-produced rock opera. After graduation, she spent five years as a full-time musician, followed by two at Harvard Business School—possibly its first singer-songwriter admittee—before joining McKinsey & Co.

Despite building a successful consulting practice, music never left her side. A milestone birthday prompted Laura to return to the studio, this time in Austin, Texas, where she recorded basic tracks at Bismeaux Studio with some of the city’s best musicians. Back in collaboration with veteran producer Warren Schatz (RCA Records, “Turn the Beat Around,” “Shame”), the final touches were added.

The result is More Light—an album rooted in decades of songwriting, experience, and the spontaneity of a last-minute scat.

As Laura Teller proves, sometimes the path you didn’t plan becomes the one that lights the way.

LUKE STEWART // SILT REMEMBRANCE ENSEMBLE

Blending two of his standout groups — the Remembrance Quintet and the Silt Trio — Luke Stewart’s The Order isn’t just a live recording. It’s a carefully crafted narrative experience, reshaped after an epic studio performance to tell a deep, flowing story through sound.

The album explores themes of memory, survival, ancestral roots, and the preciousness of shared time. Spoken word performances by No Land and Janice Lowe link The Order thematically to Stewart’s earlier Remembrance work, weaving poetry directly into the music.

Tracks like “Memory” and “River Road” showcase Daniel Carter’s luminous horn work, set against the heavy groove of Stewart’s bass and Chad Taylor’s inventive percussion. Pieces like “Survive” reference Carter's groundbreaking history with groups like In Order to Survive, while "Chain Gang" evokes struggles past and present, finding catharsis in communal rhythm.

Luke Stewart's method fuses free improvisation with a deep intuitive structure — musical lines and rhythms are introduced without roadmaps, allowing the ensemble to react instinctively, creating compositions that feel alive and urgent.

Ludwig Göransson and Ryan Coogler Reunite for Sinners — A Blues-Driven Soundtrack That Redefines Storytelling

Sony Classical and Sony Masterworks have officially released both the Original Score and Original Soundtrack for Ryan Coogler’s highly anticipated new film Sinners, with music composed and produced by Oscar-winner Ludwig Göransson. Set in the Mississippi Delta of 1932, Sinners is a thrilling, genre-bending story that dives deep into the cultural roots of American blues — and Göransson’s music plays a powerful role in bringing that world to life.

*Sinners* marks the fifth feature film collaboration between Göransson and Coogler, following their work on Creed and Black Panther. But this project is different. Göransson describes scoring Sinners as the most personal project of his career, one that deeply connects to his own upbringing and lifelong passion for the guitar.

At the heart of both the score and soundtrack is a 1932 Dobro resonator guitar, the same kind carried by Sinners’ young blues prodigy, Preacher Boy (played by breakout star Miles Caton). To fully immerse himself in the sound and spirit of the Delta, Göransson even traveled to the Deep South, tracing the birthplace of blues firsthand — an experience that left a lasting impact on the music you hear throughout Sinners.

Adding a unique layer of authenticity, several of the film’s actors are also seasoned musicians performing live onscreen — including Buddy Guy, Lola Kirke, Jayme Lawson, and Jack O’Connell. Rising star Miles Caton is a standout, contributing powerful vocal performances across multiple tracks, including the emotional centerpiece “I Lied To You,” co-written with Grammy-winner Raphael Saadiq.

The Sinners (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is a stunning mix of tradition and innovation, featuring an impressive lineup of artists spanning genres and generations. Highlights include:

  • Hailee Steinfeld’s explosive return to music with the bluesy-pop anthem “Dangerous”

  • Rod Wave’s stirring lead single “Sinners,” debuting alongside a Coogler-directed video

  • James Blake’s haunting “Séance”

  • Brittany Howard’s searing cover of "Pale, Pale Moon"

  • And Rhiannon Giddens' lively, banjo-driven “Old Corn Liquor”

Göransson explains, "We weren’t aiming for nostalgia; we wanted it to feel immediate. Much of the music was written and recorded on set with the cast and crew working alongside us. That gave Sinners a sound that's connected to the past but alive in the present."

If you’re a fan of music that feels raw, lived-in, and completely soul-stirring, this album — and film — are not to be missed.

Paloma Dineli Chesky: A Fearless New Voice Blending Jazz, Pop, and Raw Emotion

It’s rare to find a young artist who already knows she refuses to be confined to one genre. Meet Paloma Dineli Chesky, the vibrant New York-based singer-songwriter whose debut album Memory proves she’s ready to carve her own musical path. "I don’t want to be put in a box," Paloma says. "I love highly produced pop music, but I’ve also always loved jazz and timeless older artists. Right now, I’m blending the two worlds, trying to find my own voice. This is who I am."

On Memory, Paloma showcases her jazz-inflected acoustic side with six personal originals and three meaningful covers—some of which you may have already seen her perform in pop-driven versions on YouTube. It's a stunning introduction to a crossover career filled with raw power, emotional depth, and a style uniquely her own. As Steve Hart, host of Just Jazz, put it: Paloma has “a voice that could stop traffic.”

A Pandemic Awakening

Paloma’s journey to Memory was shaped heavily by the pandemic. Schooled through the New York Philharmonic’s Very Young Composers program, she had been studying composition and piano when COVID-19 halted the world. Encouraged by program director Jon Deak to weave lyrics into her compositions, Paloma leaned fully into songwriting. "Singing was always natural for me," she recalls.

While stuck at home, she taught herself music production using Logic Pro. When the world reopened, she finally stepped into a real studio with live musicians to bring Memory to life.

Songs from the Heart

From the moment Memory opens with Paloma’s soulful, bluesy take on the classic “Summertime,” it’s clear she’s not content to simply cover standards—she transforms them. "‘Summertime’ has been recorded so many times. I wanted to create a fresh groove and approach it my way," she says.

Her original songs are just as moving. The bittersweet “When the Moon’s Away” captures the feeling of joy being quickly followed by chaos and heartbreak. "People cry when I sing this," Paloma says. "It speaks to those moments when the light is overtaken by darkness."

A Musical Legacy, But a Voice All Her Own

Coming from an artistic family—her father, David Chesky, is a composer and pianist, and her mother, Patrícia Dinely, is a celebrated Brazilian actress—Paloma grew up surrounded by creativity. But her music is deeply personal and fiercely independent. "They support me, but they give me complete freedom. I write alone. These are my ideas, my sound," she explains.

Her talent was recognized early. In 2023, when ballerina Michaela Mabinty DePrince performed at Lincoln Center’s Youth America Grand Prix gala, producers chose Paloma’s song “Green” as the event’s centerpiece. Paloma performed it live, forming a bond with DePrince before her tragic and unexpected passing. Now, every time Paloma sings “Green,” it carries even deeper meaning.

Building Memory — And A Career

Memory is stripped-down and acoustic, emphasizing authenticity. Joining her are tenor saxophonist Maxwell Barnes, bassist Chris Ramirez, drummer Danno Peterson, and guitarist/musical director Michael Hilgendorf. "I wanted a mix closer to pop, so Michael was the perfect fit," Paloma says.

The album features standouts like:

  • "Baby Face": A playful, sax-driven swing that reflects on the lasting power of soul beyond youthful appearances.

  • "Memory": The title track, a sweet farewell ballad inspired by leaving Brazil to return to New York.

  • "Diamonds": A mid-tempo journey rich with metaphors about savoring the moment.

  • "Sober Now": Perhaps her most popular song to date, a poetic reflection on healing from addictive relationships.

When it comes to covers, Paloma is highly selective. She delivers a fierce, emotionally charged rendition of “House of the Rising Sun,” while offering a tender, Portuguese-sung version of the bossa nova classic “Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars).” "I'm part Brazilian," she says. "Singing it feels like coming home."

An Artist to Watch

Paloma Dineli Chesky is a fearless young artist blending her many influences—jazz, pop, blues, bossa nova—into a style that’s all her own. Memory is just the beginning.

"I want to tie different styles and ideas together," Paloma says. "Through my chords and lyrics, I’m telling my story. I'm sharing my experiences, and hoping to connect deeply with my audience."

Memory will be released June 19, 2025, on The Audiophile Society label. It’s a must-listen debut from an artist you’re sure to hear much more from in the future.

ESKA Returns with "The Ordinary Life of a Magic Woman" — A Spellbinding Fusion of Soul, Resistance & Ritual

Ten years after her Mercury Prize-nominated debut, British artist ESKA returns with a genre-defying masterwork: The Ordinary Life of a Magic Woman. Released today in physical formats via Earthling Recordings, this deeply personal album is a radiant reflection of motherhood, survival, and self-determination.

Described by The Wire Magazine as “an album of adventurous Avant Garde fusion that goes as hard as any Miles Davis, Björk, Prince or A Tribe Called Quest,” the record is an odyssey through sound and selfhood. Crafted in the early hours of Southeast London, The Ordinary Life of a Magic Woman is ESKA’s sonic journal — a mirror of life as a first-generation African British woman, home-educating her daughter while conjuring bold, mystical compositions.

The latest single, "Daddy Long Legs", released today alongside the album, is a cathartic, synth-laced ritual of reclaiming power. Co-written with Jesse Hackett and featuring spectral sax by Soweto Kinch and vocals from Laura Groves, the track pulses with hypnotic force. “It felt so good that you would think it was love,” ESKA sings — an unflinching lyric that cuts deep.

This single follows three standout releases: "Down Here", "Magic Woman", and "Human", each offering a different facet of ESKA’s evolving sound. The full album, which blends glitchy textures, funk-infused beats, and mythic lyricism, lands today on vinyl and CD, with digital to follow May 23rd.

In a bold move, ESKA has chosen to lead with physical formats. “Some listeners crave a deeper experience,” she says. “This is about reclaiming control and honoring the ritual of music.”

Upcoming in-store performances and appearances throughout the UK offer fans an intimate glimpse into the world of one of Britain’s most innovative voices. With collaborations spanning Esperanza Spalding, Grace Jones, Shabaka Hutchings, and more, ESKA is not just “one of the most important singers in the UK” (Gilles Peterson), but a visionary composer and conceptualist rewriting the rules of music its

Dane Donohue Returns with LA Rainbow – A Timeless AOR Revival

After a remarkable 46-year hiatus, Dane Donohue—a once-overlooked gem of the late '70s AOR scene—has returned with L.A. Rainbow, a follow-up to his cult-classic 1978 debut. Released in September 2024 on Japan’s P-VINE Records, the album has garnered international acclaim, reaffirming Donohue's enduring artistry.

Born in Richland County, Ohio, Donohue's musical journey began unexpectedly during a period of bed rest at age 15, when he picked up a guitar and immersed himself in The Beatles' music. After earning a communications degree from The Ohio State University, he toured as Jesus in a production of Jesus Christ Superstar, eventually leading to a recording contract with Columbia Records. His 1978 self-titled debut featured an impressive lineup, including Stevie Nicks, Don Henley, and members of Toto, yet it remained under the radar. Reflecting on that time, Donohue often quipped, “I was the only unknown on that record” .

The resurgence of interest in his music, bolstered by streaming platforms and inclusion in Spotify’s Yacht Rock playlist, inspired Donohue to create L.A. Rainbow. Co-produced with John H. Nixon of Page 99, the album was recorded across studios in Detroit, Indianapolis, and Ohio. Tracks like “Lonely Day In Paradise” and “High Life Dream” showcase Donohue's signature blend of soulful melodies and smooth grooves, evoking the essence of his earlier work while embracing contemporary production .

Donohue's return has been met with enthusiasm from fans and critics alike. A review from Germany-based WEST COAST SOUL noted, “It’s a rare feat for an artist to return after such a long hiatus and sound not just relevant but inspired” . With L.A. Rainbow, Donohue not only revisits the sound that defined his early career but also introduces it to a new generation of listeners.

Brian Jackson, Kenny Dope, and Louie Vega Release "It’s Your World" (Feat. Raheem DeVaughn, J. Ivy)

The legendary Brian Jackson—best known as Gil Scott-Heron’s longtime co-writer and musical partner—steps forward with a powerful new release, "It’s Your World," produced by the iconic Masters At Work duo, Kenny Dope and Louie Vega. Featuring stirring contributions from Raheem DeVaughn and J. Ivy, this single bridges past and present with a rich, soulful sound that’s deeply resonant today.

Brian Jackson reflects on the song’s origins:

"Back when I wrote this song, the latest greeting in the hood was 'What’s happening, baby?' For a while brothers settled on: 'Ah man, it’s your world.'
As a twenty-something, shy kid from Brooklyn, that phrase made me start thinking that if it’s really true, I must be okay—whoever and wherever I was.
This song was Brian reassuring Brian—and other Brians—who might have needed it too."

Fast forward to 2025, and "It’s Your World" is reborn as an 11-minute sonic journey. With high-value production from Louie Vega and Kenny Dope, the track weaves lush soundscapes featuring string arrangements by Leroy Burgess (performed by the Apple Hill String Quartet). It masterfully blends tradition with innovation, honoring Jackson’s legacy while moving his music forward.

Raheem DeVaughn, celebrated for his genre-bending voice and emotional delivery, brings the song to life, shifting seamlessly through tones and feelings. Meanwhile, Grammy Award-winning poet J. Ivy adds a poetic spirit, delivering mantras that echo the song’s themes of self-worth and empowerment.

"It’s Your World" is the first taste of Brian Jackson’s forthcoming album, Now More Than Ever—a reimagining of 17 classic tracks co-written with Gil Scott-Heron, brought into the present with fresh energy and a new cast of collaborators.

If you want an early taste, the radio edit is available now exclusively on Bandcamp—don’t miss it!
