CUONG VU AND RICHARD KARPEN JOIN FORCES ON ELECTRO-ACOUSTIC PROJECT - INDIGO MIST

Trumpeter-composer Cuong Vu has established himself as a distinctive voice on the new music/improvising scene for his adventurous work over the past 20 years with the likes of guitarist Bill Frisell, Pat Metheny and Laurie Anderson as well as his four recordings as leader.

Composer Richard Karpen has earned accolades for his work in the classical field as well as for being a cutting edge sonic experimenter of the highest order. Joined by innovative bassist Luke Bergman (their faculty colleague at the University of Washington) and Vu's longstanding bandmate, drummer Ted Poor, these two kindred spirits push the envelope in a myriad of provocative ways on That The Days Go By And Never Come Again. An extended suite that pays tribute to the indelible composing team of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn in a most uncompromising fashion, their extraordinary RareNoiseRecords debut under the collective name of Indigo Mist is unlike any Ellingtonia you've ever heard."

Says Vu, "The whole record, to me, is a tone poem that is deeply affected by their music, even to the point where as we were at the apex of experimenting, Duke and Billy were always in the room with us and we had to come to terms with their presence. I feel that we've respectfully paid homage to them by taking our own connection to them and sprinkled that all over the record like a mist."

The unlikely duo of New York-based improviser-bandleader Vu and Seattle academician Karpen crystallized when they met at the University of Washington. As Vu explains, "One of the things that I did when I became a new faculty here was to research my colleagues, mainly just to get to know about the various interests of the School of Music faculty and get a feel for how I would move about within that musical community. Once I started reading about Richard, I was immediately interested because his work was on the forefront of electro-acoustic music as well as being a composer from the Western Classical Art Music tradition.  Much of classical music had such an impact on how I interfaced with music while I was doing my bachelors of music that I've always been interested in working with a serious composer at some point. Then when I heard his music I was completely blown away and knew that I had to work with him, if not to just make music together somehow, then to at least learn from him."

Adds Karpen, "It is very unusual for a 'classically' trained composer like me, with my particular background and continued interest in experimental music and several decades of very deep involvement in the development of computer music both as a composer and as a programmer, to be head of such a School of Music. And it seems to me to be just as unusual for someone coming from a jazz background like Cuong, who is deeply involved in breaking through artificial boundaries through many kinds of experimentation, would be on the a faculty of such a school. The chance that both of us would be at the same place at the same time, and with one of us heading this school, seems to be one chance in millions!
The provocative tone poem kicks off with a torrent of drums from Ted Poor entitled "L'Heure bleue." While traversing the kit with power and precision, Poor's drumming is sonically enhanced to give it the effect of rolling thunder, gently falling rain or a phalanx of drummers.

Poor then switches to mallets for the evocative title track as Karpen and Vu make their entrance into the mysterious soundscape, beginning with Karpen's sparsely plucked notes from inside the piano and continuing with Vu's electronically treated trumpet and Luke Bergman's sparse bass lines. The piece builds to a thunderous crescendo with Karpen's throbbing bass notes and Cecil Tayloresque cascading in the high register of the piano. Poor's potent free drumming fuels the track while Vu's intuitive keening trumpet wails over the top of the fray. This urgent piece gradually morphs into a haunting treatment of Strayhorn's "A Flower is a Lovesome Thing" that has Vu remaining close to the melody as Karpen pushes the harmonic envelope with his probing piano work. It then flows organically into a thoughtful but uncompromising meditation on Strayhorn entitled "Billy."

An element of swing enters the picture on "Duke," which opens with Poor's hip, syncopated playing on the kit in intimate conversation with Vu's unaffected trumpet worked, Bergman and Karpen enter the conversation near the midway mark and extrapolation ensues until they build up to extreme layers of density and dissonance with Vu reaching into his bag of extended techniques on the trumpet to match the pitch of the turbulent proceedings. At their tumultuous peak, Vu and Bergman lay out and Karpen gradually settles into zen-like repose on the piano, setting up for a sublime reading of Ellington's gorgeous "In a Sentimental Mood," which is played beautifully by Vu and underscored with tastefully restraint by Karpen, Bergman and Poor. This gentle but brief bit of Ellingtonia then morphs into the more mysterioso excursion "Charles" (for Mingus), which in turn leads into a highly impressionistic take on Strayhorn's "Lush Life."

Karpen's furious, rolling bass notes and aggressive stabs at the keyboard next come into play on "The Electric Mist," a frenzied improvisation which has the pianist going toe-to-toe in full-out Cecil Taylor mode with drummer Poor augmenting his urgent attack with some powerhouse playing of his own. The piece ends with an electronic barrage that is purely of the 21st century. The album concludes with a spacious, abstract rendition of Ellington's "Mood Indigo" that begins with the sounds of a gong (or singing bowl) and plucked piano strings penetrating the silence before Bergman and Vu enter with a walking-on-eggshells approach. The familiar theme of this final nod to Ellington is hinted at throughout the course of the piece but not truly revealed until near the end of its eight-minutes in the beautifully warm tones of Vu's trumpet. It's definitely the most challenging music I've been engaged in our musical interests and curiosities, I'm at a place in my life right now where it's crucially important for me to make music that is completely honest and without any external pressures.

"We're trying to do something new and different while flipping the whole idea of playing 'jazz' upside down," says Vu of this Indigo Mist project. "And by choosing this music as our primary subject matter or subject of inspiration, we are addressing jazz in a way that I feel is in reverence and trying to add our own perspective of the greatness what jazz really means to me along with the greatness of these two masters."

ORGAN TRIO BAND INTERSTATIC RELEASES "ARISE" THIER MOST INTENSE OFFERING TO DATE

With each successive outing -- first 2011ʼs Anthem followed by their raucous RareNoiseRecords debut, 2013ʼs InterStatic -- the potent Norway-based trio of expatriate Brit organist Roy Powell, Norwegian guitarist Jacob Young and Norwegian drummer Jarle Vespestad has upped the ante on intensity and audaciousness while arriving at a nexus where rock organically meets jazz. Now the powerhouse unit has reached a new level with 2014ʼs superb Arise.

Together these three complementary voices create an organ/guitar trio for the 21st century. "The chemistry between the band members is what it always was," says principal composer Powell. "Itʼs three strong-willed, opinionated people working together to make the best music we can. We have regular discussions and disagreements but thankfully few fist fights. And although I write the majority of the material, it is constantly being honed by the group, which is why live work is so important."

Fueled by the remarkably flexible drummer Vespestad (known for his work with Tord Gustavsen, Silje Nergaard, Supersilent, and Farmers Market), Arise shifts nimbly from grungy anthems like "Doozy Mugwump Blues" and "Alexa" to intricate numbers like "Caerbannog" (named after the cave protected by the killer rabbit in the absurdly comedic 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail) to the swinging "Alpha Dog." Powellʼs "Frankʼll Fix It," full of challenging stop-time phrases, is dedicated to one of his major influences, Frank Zappa. "I was lucky enough to be introduced to the music of Zappa and Miles Davis at exactly the same time when I was 13 years old hanging with my hip pen-pal´s family in Germany in ´79," he recalls. "I heard Bitches Brew and Roxy & Elsewhere and my mind opened up and remained that way as I searched for those recordings and others by Frank and Miles when I got back to the UK. I listen regularly to Zappa to this day and probably will never stop, just like I have been reading William S.Burroughs for 30 years and still find profound truths in his work."

Powellʼs dynamic "Wonderfall" carries the influence of the pioneering fusion band Lifetime featuring UK guitar hero John McLaughlin and Newark, New Jersey-based organist Larry Young. "I was never drawn to the Jimmy Smith organ trio sound from his Blue Note Records days in the early ʻ60s," says Powell. "It was only when listening to Larry Young that organ became a serious interest for me and as I grew up listening to jazz-rock, the whole idea of being locked into a previous eraʼs aesthetic did not appeal. Instead, I loved the sense of freedom and risk-taking that I heard on Lifetimeʼs Emergency!"

For the outstanding, genre-bending guitarist Jacob Young, Arise represents a complete departure from his more pristine outings as a leader on the ECM label. His unhinged wah-wah and distortion solos throughout Arise provide the some of the most explosive moments on this very audacious trio outing. "InterStatic is entirely a different kind of group and differs from my ECM outings in several ways," says the Oslo-based guitarist. "On my ECM albums we strive for a cleaner, more natural acoustic sound on each instrument. InterStatic is sound-wise almost an opposite to my ECM group. I love both ways of working with improvised music.

Young, Powell and Vespested represent a powerful triumvirate on their third record together overall and second for RareNoise Records. "We have developed a deep respect for each other over the course of our three albums," says Young. "We are three different guys that happen to play some music together, sometimes we have a blast doing it too. Sometimes we disagree, and we can discuss angles of maybe a mix or a tempo or a certain way of how to play a tune, but we have headroom to handle this. In a way, we have learned to deal with each otherʼ s quirks, strengths and moods and we get good at reading each other in the process."

"Open-mindedness should be a pre-requisite of all musicians so we just play whatever we feel like," adds Powell, who also plays organ in the RareNoise group Naked Truth. "At the time of our first release, Anthem, we were mixing the repertoire of a modern jazz organ trio with no distorted sounds with some more rock sounds. We took this further on InterStatic and now on Arise  the gloves are off. We get a real kick out of performing the more intricate compositions to audiences as nothing beats some well coordinated weirdness together with some heavy grooving and soloing!"

All of those elements come together in righteous fashion on Arise, InterStaticʼ s most thunderous and freewheeling outing to date.

Musicians: Ray Powell (Hammond Organ), Jacob Young (Electric Guitar), Jarle Vespestad (Drums)

Tracks: Doozy Mugwump Blues / Caerbannog / Alpha Dog / Iwato / Frank'll Fix It / In The Beginning / Doozy (Reprise)

Arise is available on August 4, 2014 through Rare Noise Records.

DIANA KRALL TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM OF SONGS FROM BOB DYLAN, THE EAGLES, ELTON JOHN, THE MAMAS AND THE PAPAS, PAUL MCCARTNEY

Five-time Grammy Award-winning jazz pianist and singer Diana Krall will release her new studio album on Verve Records on September 9.  The new release is entitled "Wallflower" and is a collection of songs from the late 60's to present day that inspired Krall in her early years.  Produced by 16-time Grammy® Award-winning producer David Foster, the album finds Krall breaking new ground with her interpretations of some of the greatest pop songs of all time.

"It was a nice change for me to be in the vocal booth with pretty much only David's superb piano accompaniment and orchestrations," said Diana Krall.

Diana Krall's unique artistry has not only made her one of the most recognizable artists of modern jazz but it has also transcended any one particular style of music.  Krall has sold more albums than any other female jazz artist in the last 30 years, establishing herself as one of the best-selling artists of her generation.  The new album is the next chapter in her incredible songbook, bringing her signature style to some of the greatest songs of our time, including The Eagles' "Desperado," The Mamas & The Papas' "California Dreamin," Elton John's, "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word," and Harry Nilsson's "Everybody's Talkin'," amongst others.

"The songs Diana performs on this album are the ones she grew up hearing on the radio and listening to on vinyl," said David Foster.  "What makes this album so special is the way Diana re-imagines each tune and the way she puts her heart and soul into every syllable."

The new album marks Krall's first studio effort since 2012's "Glad Rag Doll," produced by T Bone Burnett, which debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 and at No. 1 on the Jazz Albums chart.  Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, she has won five Grammy®  Awards, eight Juno®  Awards and has also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums.

NEW RELEASES - SERGIO MENDES - MAGIC; MARCO DI MARCO - SELECTION SELECTED BY JAZZTRONIK; ALON NECHUSHTAN - VENTURE BOUND

SERGIO MENDES - MAGIC

Sérgio Mendes, the most successful Brazilian musician of all time had released a new album entitled Magic. Sérgio is a man of many facets – from his work on the soundtracks for the animated movies Rio and Rio 2 to performing with the young and hip as well as with the legends of almost all musical genres. He always remains true to himself and his musical vision – all this is stated in his new album Magic. The Brazilian artist recorded the songs on the album in Los Angeles and Salvador with a host of friends and special guests. The album starts with a powerful Song called “One Nation” featuring Carlinhos Brown, which is a homage to global football and to its fans, with an appealing and catchy theme. Other guests artists performing on on the album include original Brasil '66 vocalist Gracinha Leporace, Maria Gadu, Scott Mayo, Seu Jorge, Aila Menezes, Ana Carolina, and Milton Nascimento. John Legend and Will.I.Am. – old friends of Sergio, were also on hand to collaborate on some tracks. “My My My My Love” is a modern pop oriented song that Sérgio and Will perform with an infectious groove, and John Legend delights with beautiful lyrics and vocals on “Don’t Say Goodbye”. “Simbora” and “Sou Eu” are two very rhythmic and percussive songs which convey the Brazilian groove that makes you move. Besides upbeat pop-related songs, the album also presents some more leisurely numbers: “When I Fell In Love” is a wonderful song performed by Sérgio’s wife, Gracinha Leporace, who is also the singer in his live shows. Ana Carolina’s interpretation of “Atlantica” is a touching ballad which is beautifully arranged and performed. Connecting all of these songs on his album is the ‘voice’ of Sergio Mendes’ piano and the original sound of his arrangements – always full of life and delivered with a smile.

MARCO DI MARCO - SELECTION SELECTED BY JAZZTRONIK

One of our favorite pianists ever – presented here in a selection of classics that are hand-picked by Jazztronik! The mix of talents is no surprise – given the huge influence that Marco's had on global scenes over the years – first making big waves in Paris in the 70s, then reaching some big attention in London during the 90s, and even touching folks as far away as Japan with his work! Di Marco's got this wonderful mix of lyricism and rhythm that's unlike anyone else we can think of – a style that might be somewhere in the territory of American players like Horace Silver, Cedar Walton, or Jack Wilson – but which also has its own sort of European twist, thanks to superb rhythmic accompaniment on most numbers from Jacky Samson on bass and Charles Saudrais on drums. The range of tracks is wonderful – all of Marco's best groovers in one set, including some Fender Rhodes tracks as well – and titles include "Scufflin Along", "I Miei Ricordi", "Le Chat Qui Peche", "Dopo", "Par Avion", "You Caught Me", "Bossa With Regards", "Camparenda", and "Theme For Ginerva". ~ Dusty Groove

ALON NECHUSHTAN - VENTURE BOUND

Pianist Alon Nechustan has a really deft tone on this set – a record that's filled with vibrant rhythms, exotic elements, and some strong tenor lines that are almost as great as the work from the leader! All the tunes are originals, with a really personal, poetic feel – yet they also bristle with this strong sense of soul that makes plenty of space for individual expression from tenorists Donny McCaslin and John Ellis – each of whom shine on different tracks, sometimes with strong soulful solos, sometimes with more exotic tones. Nechustan gets especially nice rhythmic support from Chris Lightcap on bass and Adam Cruz on drums – who help the album bounce along in a really forward-moving line – and two tracks feature trumpet from Duane Eubanks, and one more soul oud from Brahim Brigbane. Titles include "L'Avventura", "The Gratitude Suite", "Dark Damsel", "FAQ", "Snow Flow", and "Serpentrails" ~ Dusty Groove

ROOTS REGGAE ICON LUCIANO RELEASES UNIQUE NEW SINGLE IN CONJUNCTION WITH TWENTY CITY U.S. TOUR

Jamaica’s Luciano, the foremost singer of roots reggae to have emerged during the past twenty years, celebrates the release of My Soul,  a brand-new inspirational single, with a coast to coast U.S. tour which runs through June and into July. My Soul, released on Shanachie Entertainment June 5th, is an inspirational ballad which adds another flavor to Luciano’s already diverse palette, including a rock-style guitar solo. Produced by C & I Productions, the team who produced Luciano’s 2005 album JAH WORDS, My Soul is a conscious attempt to deliver his message in a musical setting that will be accessible to a wide variety of listeners, not just reggae fans.

"Over the years I have listened to other international icons like Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, and Jim Reeves," relates Luciano.  By listening to all these great brothers, I have learned to appreciate other works and see that there are no barriers in music. Although I am well known as a cultural reggae singer, I have an International message and so I cannot deliver it just to reggae fans. I have to extend it to people from all walks of life"

My Soul showcases the evocative timbre and extraordinary power of Luciano’s singing, showing that his talent and ability to touch people’s hearts transcends genre.  With the ongoing controversy over the lack of substance and often negative lyrical content on recordings coming out of Jamaica today, Luciano’s consistent presence as both a touring and recording artist gives badly-needed substance to music fans hungry for uplifting music.

As great as his recordings are, Luciano truly reaches higher heights when performing live, which has enabled him to be one of the most active touring reggae artists in the world today. With the release of My Soul, Luciano demonstrates his continued commitment to artistic growth and musical quality!

SOUL LEGEND LEE FIELDS RETURNS WITH "EMMA JEAN"

Soul legend Lee Fields has re-teamed with The Expressions for new album Emma Jean, on Brooklyn’s Truth & Soul Records. Coming at a time when many new artists are trying to emulate the soul and swagger of the 1960s, Mr. Fields showers us with authenticity on the 11-track set, highlighted by first single “Magnolia.”

Since releasing his first album in 1969, Fields has continued to make music for the last 45 years. And having been on the road, touring non-stop for the better part of the last decade, it’s evident that Fields has hit an elevated stride both as a recording artist and live performer.

Emma Jean is the follow up to Fields’ widely praised first two Truth & Soul albums-2009′s My World and 2012′s Faithful Man. Lee Fields & The Expressions have forged a distinct soulful sound and a grown style with this album. They’ve pushed their sound in new directions, moving from being content as contemporary soul music royalty and instead delving into and exploring its next steps.

There’s a sharper wisdom in the songwriting–from the having loved, lost, and learned vibe of “Don’t Leave Me This Way,” backed by crooning guitar and wailing horns, to the sophisticated arrangements and studio acumen that’s pared with Lee’s straightforward sincerity in “Just Can’t Win.” Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys wrote “Paralyzed,” and having Emma Jean mixed and partially recorded at his Nashville studio, country soul and bluesy rock are immediately noticeable. It brings a different kind of strut to the album, but Fields–born and raised in North Carolina–is right at home with the Southern soul sound. In fact, it feels like a natural progression: an organic, refreshingly pure next step.

Like past releases from this matchless pairing of Fields’ warm-and-raw growl and The Expressions’ switched-on and sharp musicianship, Emma Jean takes soul music in a familiar but updated direction. “He’s 63 years old,” notes the album’s producer and co-owner of Truth & Soul Leon Michels, “he’s so focused, and has been working non-stop–he’s singing the best he ever has.

Tracklisting: 01. Just Can’t Win / 02. Magnolia / 03. Paralyzed / 04. Standing By Your Side
05. Eye To Eye / 06. In The Woods / 07. All I Need / 08. Still Gets Me Down / 09. Talk To Somebody / 10. Stone Angel / 11. Don’t Leave Me This Way.

FROM NORTH-EAST TO RIO DE JANEIRO WITH TOCO ON HIS NEW RELEASE "MEMORIA"

“From North-East to Rio De Janeiro: the new album by Toco.” – Toco’s words briefly depict the musical content of Memoria. This work represents his artistical growth from the previous album “Outro Lugar”, which was partially recorded in Rio de Janeiro with Roberto Menescal and other musicians from the carioca scene and highlighted elements of bossa and samba jazz from the 60s. “Guarapiranga”, a song from that album, has been recently featured in the soundtrack of the movie “Silver Linings Playbook”, which received 7 nominations and one award at the 2013 Academy Award ceremony. In this album the artist doesn’t abandon that tradition nor his passion for Rio De Janeiro and its pictoresque musicians, but explores the musical world of artists that influenced him and had inspired his artistical path: Edu Lobo, Milton Nascimento, Arthur Verocai, Geraldo Vandré, Sergio Ricardo e Dorival Caymmi.

“Minas”, a poetic hommage to Minas Gerais, opens this magical chapter, followed by gems recalling the life in the northeast, the geographical distance between the inland and the litoral as the distance of an old friendship or a lost love. “Cigana”, “Versos Perdidos”, “O Tempo è Aqui”, “Vendeval”, Rainha”: here is the inner Brazil, far from the sea and not always jolly. Toco brings us on a journey that ideally culminates in “Divino” and “Bate”, intimate and romantic original compositions. But he reminds us that Brazil means party as well, samba, joy of life, with tracks like “Meu Rio”, “Manè”, “Sem Par” and “Breque Bom”.

The artist banded together with several musicians from his country: Robert and Eduardo Taufic from Natal, a city located in the northeast of Brazil, Mauro Martins, Edu Hebling, Marquinho Baboo, Ligiana Costa and Selton. Nina Miranda, already known to the public for her collaboration with Smoke City and Da Lata, joined this cast of amazing artists. The album has been produced by Stefano Tirone, the mind behind S-Tone Inc. After the previous collaborations on “Instalaçao Do Samba” (Schema, 2004) and “Outro Lugar” (Schema, 2007) this album confirms the artistical compatibility and affinity between the two artists.

“Memory doesn’t age, it always remains the same. “Memoria” is an album about my memories, my hometown, the scent and flavours of my childhood, things I’ve read, movies I’ve watched at the cinema and my love for music. It’s about going back home, re-establishing a link with the past and recalling cheerful and happy memories. “Memoria” refers specifically to the regions of Minais Gerais and the Brazilian northeast, its hot climate, the religiousness of the people and its faith in miracles, calling to mind images of mysterious and surreal popular tales, where time flows slowly in an intimate dimension.” – Toco

NEW RELEASES: DAMIEN MARLEY - BONNAROO LIVE '06; WALT WEISKOPF - OVERDRIVE; BARBARA MORRISON FEATURING HOUSTON PERSON - I LOVE YOU, YES I DO

DAMIEN MARLEY - BONNAROO LIVE '06

“Bonnaroo Live” is ‘Jr. Gong’s full live set from the Bonnaroo Festival in 2006. It includes many of his greatest hits and covers of some of his father’s most famous songs. Any fan of Damian Marley and reggae music will love this live concert, as he puts forth a performance that only a true Marley can.
Damian Marley, youngest son of legendary reggae artist and pop icon Bob Marley & Cindy Breakspeare (Miss World 1976), was thrust into the reggae music scene at birth. Although his father passed away when he was only 2-years-old, Damian grew up and upheld his family name, which is synonymous with reggae music in Jamaica. Damian, or ‘Junior Gong’ as he is known to many, garnered mainstream success with the hit song “Welcome To Jamrock” in 2005. He was well-known and well-respected way before 2005, though, as is evidenced by the Grammy Award he won in 2002 for best reggae album, “Halfway Tree”. Damian went on to merge reggae with rap when he released “Distant Relatives” with hip hop artist Nas in 2010. The critically acclaimed album was extremely well received by both fans and press alike, and in 2011 he joined the group Superheavy alongside Mick Jagger. Tracks include: Rebel Music/Jammin; Confrontation; More Justice; Hey Girl; Where Is The Love; Beautiful; There For You; Punky Reggae Party/Love & Unity/New Wave Chant; War (Cover); Move; In 2 Deep; Khaki Suit; Could You Be Loved; Crowd Interlude; Bob Marley Medley; Road To Zion; and Welcome To Jamrock. ~ grooveattack.com

WALT WEISKOPF - OVERDRIVE

Bold, soulful sounds from tenorist Walt Weiskopf – a player who not only really knows his place as a soloist, but who also comes across as a great leader on a date like this! The whole group's got a focus that comes through right away – Walt's bold horn in the lead, but fused with these strong piano lines from Peter Zak, guitar from Yotam Silberstein, and vibes from Behn Gillece – instruments that really pull together a lot of sound and tones when used this well, creating a sense of force that really drives the album along. All tunes are originals by Weiskopf, save one – and the whole thing's got this unified vision from the start to the finish – a really great step forward for Walt. Titles include "Like Mike", "The Path Is Narrow", "Night Vision", "Waltz For Dad", "Four Horsemen", "Midwinter Night's Dream", and "No Biz". ~ Dusty Groove
.

BARBARA MORRISON  FEATURING HOUSTON PERSON - I LOVE YOU, YES I DO

A great old school vocal jazz set from Barbara Morrison – done with small combo backing from tenorist Houston Person – in a mode that's similar to his classic records with Etta Jones! Morrison's a singer we've always liked, but it often depends on the setting – and this time around, she's got just the right showcase – an easygoing groove from the combo, which leaves plenty of room for inflections that are soulful, mellow, and never too over the top. Barbara's a singer who's never going to hit you over the head with her talents – which are many – and when she shines, she really shines brightly – as you'll hear on tunes that include "Trust In Me", "I Didn't Know What Time It Was", "Who Can I Turn To", "And I Love Him", and "For The Love Of You". ~ Dusty Groove

MAXI PRIEST IS BACK WITH "EASY TO LOVE" FIRST STUDIO ALBUM IN 5 YEARS

Maxi is back with his first new studio album in five years titled “Easy To Love”. The new album is a fine representation of lovers’ rock, an effortless blend of reggae, R&B and dancehall with universal appeal. The sophistication he brings to these tracks is the mark of true quality. His delivery and phrasing are impeccable, and his choice of material and collaborators are strategic and brilliant.

Lead single “Easy To Love” was a No. 1 hit on reggae charts last summer, evidence that Maxi Priest has a gift for staying fresh. The song features the legendary Jamaican drum and bass duo Sly & Robbie, who’ve played on some of Maxi’s biggest hits, including “Wild World,” “Some Guys Have All The Luck,” “Close To You,” and “Housecall” (featuring Shabba Ranks) as well as the new album track “Every Little Thing.”

Maxi’s been tugging on women’s heartstrings ever since the mid-80′s. New and long-term fans alike will relish hearing irresistible tributes of enduring affection like “Loving You Is Easy,” “Holiday,” “Still In Love,” and “Gravity” written originally by John Mayer. The soulful “Without A Woman” features Jamaican legend Beres Hammond and even echoes the themes and intensity of James Brown’s “It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World.”

There are many more highlights on the Easy To Love. While “Hearts Across The World” is a song for our times and pleas for people of all races to love one another, other tracks like “Fire In The Skies” simply defy categorization and are living proof of Maxi Priest’s musical versatility.” The delicate, aching need of “Angel Wings” also demonstrates just how far reggae has evolved in the new era.

Maxi Priest says “this album is about time, and a moment,” and with his most refined and chic collection to date, his timing could not be better.

PAOLO RUSTICHELLI RELEASES NEW SINGLE "PLAYA BLANCA"

Paolo Rustichelli's new single 'Playa Blanca' is ready to take you away for a hot jazzy summer, following Paolo's last Smooth Jazz smash hit 'Med Groove'!

Paolo Rustichelli is a composer, piano & keyboard virtuoso, singer and producer that realizes his productions completely by himself. He is a real 'One Man Band' that impresses audiences with his eclectic styles that make him really unique. His sound has become a trademark and source of trends and inspiration among artists worldwide. Among his album projects, Paolo recorded, performed and produced for rock-jazz superstars like Carlos Santana and Miles Davis.

Son of the Italian three-time Oscar nominee, Carlo Rustichelli, Paolo started his career at age 16 simultaneously as a soundtrack composer and as a rock keyboard player with the album "Opera Prima"on RCA Records, considered by several critics a Rock Progressive masterpiece.

As a teenage prodigy, Paolo pioneered the use of the mono synth ARP 2600 and Moog in Albums and Movies, including the Italian cult film Fernando Di Leo's "Razza Violenta". This score was entirely made with both the Yamaha CS80 polysynth and with the first sampler machine of the world, the Fairlight CMI, making Paolo one of the first composers to make a soundtrack entirely with synths. Among movie aficionados, Quentin Tarantino is a fan of Paolo's music and Fernando Di Leo movies.

In 1991 Paolo moved from Rome to Los Angeles. In 1995 he released the solo album "Mystic Jazz" (called "Capri" in the US, by PolyGram records) which was the first European jazz-rock album released worldwide by PolyGram records. Paolo achieved further success creating the "Chill Out music" genre with albums 'Mystic Jazz' and 'Mystic Man', which proved to be extremely influential for smooth jazz progressive style.

In 1997 he released the album "Mystic Man" in the US through Island Records, which featured the legendary Miles Davis, Carlos Santana, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Andy Summers and the disco diva Jill Jones. In that same year, Gavin and Radio & Records (Billboard) reported the song "Paisa" from Paolo's album "Mystic Man" had reached BILLBOARD N.1 the Top 10 on the U.S. NAC chart ( Smooth Jazz ).

In 2002 Paolo composed, arranged and produced the song "Kyrie" for Placido Domingo's Sacred Songs album for 250 elements orchestra. The album "Neopagan", completely made with state-of-the-art plug-in technology, charted in the US Radio charts in 2006 with the song "My Geisha". The single "Soul Italiano" (2011) was at the Top Ten radio charts for seven weeks. In 2014 the single "Med Groove" went N.1 in the Smooth Jazz Charts becoming a Smooth Jazz Hit. "Med Groove" was also N.1 at Amazon Top Sellers for 2 months.

As a film score composer he has scored more than 100 movies for theatrical and TV releases, including Top Box Office success like 'Amici Miei - Atto III' by Mario Monicelli & more. Paolo's videos, like his music, are usually shot by himself. In this way Paolo preceded the 'selfie' current trend. The video of the songs: "Soul Italiano" (2011), "Med Groove" (2014) and the recent "Playa Blanca" are examples.

Paolo is currently working on his Album "Soul Italiano" which is scheduled to be released at the end of 2014. He can be contacted at store@mp3tracks.com.

FREDA PAYNE COMES BACK TO JAZZ WITH "COME BACK TO ME LOVE"

As iconic in 2014 for her timeless beauty and sex appeal as she is her artistic versatility as an all around entertainer, Ms. Freda Payne remains among music's and show business' brightest shining star survivors. When she is singing her heartbeat music - jazz - love, awe and yearning only grow stronger. Her latest album, Come Back To Me Love (her first for Artistry Music) marks not only a return to the big band and strings-laden classics from her mid-`60s beginnings with Impulse!, but also marks a return to her hometown of Detroit. That makes this 14-song album featuring Grammy® Award-winning arranger Bill Cunliffe's musical arrangements - from the vibes-kissed Kenny Rankin waltz "Haven't We Met" to the lonely evening fireplace musings of "Lately" - a beautiful homecoming.

"It's a dream come true," Payne enthuses with a smile, "just like in 1968 when I was living in New York seeking my fame and fortune, and ran into Brian Holland of Holland-Dozier-Holland. He told me they had just left Motown and started their own company, Invictus. I flew back to Detroit, signed with them and a year later had a Top 5 record, 'Band of Gold.' So signing to Artistry Music with Gretchen Valade and Tom Robinson today is truly serendipitous - a flashback to something really good happening for me at home in Detroit, my good luck charm."

Reflecting on how this opportunity arose, Payne continues, "(Bassist) Ralphe Armstrong and I were on a local big band gig together when he told me about an intimate jazz club in Grosse Pointe Farms, MI, with great food, saying, 'You should work there.' I made the contact and that's when I met Gretchen and Tom. Six months later I did a return engagement and they asked me to sing a song for a documentary on Gretchen - When I Have To Smile. Then they asked if I'd like to record an album for their label, Artistry Music. That made me feel very special."

That album became Come Back To Me Love, featuring six selections penned by Gretchen and Tom (including the title track, "You Don't Know" and "I Should Have Told Him") paired with eight selections of golden favorites such as the torchy "I Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry" and the blues boiler "I'd Rather Drink Muddy Water." When asked who she would like to be her right hand she called upon a more recent associate of hers, Los Angeles-based Bill Cunliffe. She'd first hired him to accompany her in her acclaimed "Ella: The First Lady of Song" engagement at Catalina Bar & Grill in Hollywood. "I told them Bill was at the top of my list," Freda insists. "Bill is an excellent musician, easy to get along with and respects my ideas."

Come Back To Me Love is split between powerful big band jazz and classy contemporary pop with strings. "Gretchen and Tom's material was offered as part of the project," Freda explains. "They sent me about 20 songs asking Bill and I to pick. I'd go to Bill's - sit and listen to the CDs - and we got them down to the six best for us. It was the combination of the musicality and the lyrics that got me...all about love in all its dimensions...all reflecting what people go through in life, including me. Their songs are the most commercial of the album."

For the remaining eight selections, Payne picked longtime favorites that she'd always wanted to do, but had never recorded or performed before. That exception was "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most," which she had been using in live performances but had not yet recorded, done in a breathtaking piano and vocals-only pairing. "I remember 'Midnight Sun' from Lionel Hampton - I was once his band singer, I got to know him and his wife Gladys," Freda adds. "And I remember 'Save Your Love For Me' from when I first went to New York City and heard Nancy Wilson's version with Cannonball Adderley."

Asked if much has changed since those first 1963 jazz recordings in her birthday week in September and she marvels, "In `63 I was nervous as hell - uptight and pushing too hard to be perfect. This time I felt like I was in Heaven. I was in Capitol Records Studio A (another company she recorded for in the mid-`70s) with 40 musicians, singing over impeccable arrangements. I was much more relaxed and secure within myself. One of my favorite vocal performances is 'The Island' (from the musical pens of Brazil's Ivan Lins and Vitor Martins with English lyrics by husband and wife team Alan & Marilyn Bergman). The song is so intimate, sexual and spiritual all at the same time. The sound of Bill's orchestration just enveloped and transfixed me... I was taken to another place and just went with it in my vocal."

With her Artistry Music debut, Come Back To Me Love -- on which every instrumental solo sounds like it was played by someone who had a crush on her at one time or another -- Ms. Freda Charcelia Payne won't just be swinging on a star...she'll be clutching that golden Victrola for this, her return to jazz and Detroit.

Though best known for her 1970 R&B crossover smash hit "Band of Gold," Freda Payne has always first and foremost been a jazz singer dating back to The Jimmy Wilkins Big Band at age 14. Her debut album After The Lights Go Down Low And More (Impulse! - 1963) was arranged by Manny Albam while a more pop-oriented follow-up entitled How Do You Say I Don't Love You Anymore (MGM - 1966) was helmed by saxophonist/arranger Benny Golson. Payne performed at the Apollo Theater up in Harlem alongside Billy Eckstine backed by Quincy Jones and His Orchestra (and then performed her hits as a headliner at the Apollo in the early '70s), comedian Redd Foxx and the dance team Coles & Atkins. She also graced the stage with Duke Ellington for two nights in Pittsburgh, after which he composed "Blue Piano" just for her. Freda Payne's training and experience render her a rare vocal artist that is stylistically beyond category.

Upcoming Freda Payne Performances:
* July 12 / Melbourne Recital Center / Melbourne, Australia
August 9 / BB King Blues Club / New York, NY

NEW RELEASES: VANESSA PEREA - SOULFUL DAYS; JESSE LAINE POWELL - ON THE EDGE; JAMES DEAN CLAITOR - PSEUDONYMS

VANESSA PEREA - SOULFUL DAYS

On her impressive ZOHO debut, New York-based vocalist Vanessa Perea sings with the mature phrasing, clear articulation, flawless intonation, and rhythmic assuredness that she may have absorbed through endless hours of listening to her heroines Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and Anita O Day. The 26-year-old daughter of a Cuban mother and a Colombian father, Perea grew up in her New Jersey household with the sounds of salsa and cumbia music while also singing in her church choir. Credit Grammy®-nominated jazz singer Roseanna Vitro, Vanessa s teacher at New Jersey City University, with introducing her to the sounds of Ella, Sarah, and Anita. From bebop to bossa nova to a stroll through the Great American Songbook, Perea handles each tune on Soulful Days with an air of nonchalance and sense of confidence that belies her young age. Credit trombonist Rob Edwards, an accomplished improviser himself, with the creative arrangements. ~ Amazon.com

JESSE LAINE POWELL - ON THE EDGE

She has been called “a classic jazz voice”.   Her smooth sound and delivery of her R&B and Gospel roots run deep.   A preachers daughter, Jessie grew up singing the gospel music in her church, but it was jazz that began to capture her. Before long jazz and R&B began to dominate her musical tastes.  Being heavily influenced by several people in the entertainment industry, Jessie packed up and moved to Hollywood.   After a short time on the West Coast, Jessie found herself caught up with alcohol and pregnant.  Jessie left the LA spotlight after a prophetic call from a close family member who warned Jessie that she would return back to Kentucky in a wooden box if she didn’t change her life.   Taking heed of the warning, Jessie found herself heading back on a plane to Kentucky with a karaoke machine in one hand, a suitcase in the other, and a seven-month old baby inside of her.   Unfortunately, that very same baby would pass away just three months later. Jessie found herself plummeting into a deep depression.   In her pain, Jessie concluded that suicide would be her only answer and her way out.   But as fate would have it, that attempt would lead to her rediscovering God and finding her new salvation.   This would shift her life.   While on the edge of life and death, Jessie found her way back to her roots of Gospel Music. She then began intertwining it with the Jazz she loved, creating a unique sound called Gospel Jazz. With her new-found sound, Jessie would meet and begin working with producer Eric Copeland of Creative Soul Jazz.  This collaboration brought her new debut album“ On the Edge” in which she wrote many of the songs. Visit THE JAZZ NETWORK WORLDWIDE "A GREAT PLACE TO HANG" at: http://www.thejazznetworkworldwide.com/?xg_source=msg_mes_network

NEW RELEASES: QUARTETTO DI LUCCA - 4 QUARTETTO; GIANNI ODDI - STYLE; ANDREAS VARADY

QUARTETTO DI LUCCA - 4 QUARTETTO

It is quite rare to discover on the Italian Jazz scene a successful ensemble, which passed unscathed through years. Bands are usually weakened or put in crisis, most of the times caused by sudden changes in line-ups. The Quartetto di Lucca is a band of young players which formerly were part of the amateurial Hot Clubs and some years ago debuted among the pros. The quartet of Lucca, however, has a peculiarity of its own, the ability to defend the results and the continuity of a fruitful collaboration with a compromise: the pure jazz calling, more congenial and relevant to the quartet, is flanked by a more pop concert activity with the specific aim of ensuring the survival of the first through the latter. The band was born as a quintet at the end of 1957, with the actual members accompanied by the guitarist Gaetano Mariani, who left the ensemble in the summer of 1961. 1958 had seen their official debut in Rome at Quirino Theatre, in occasion of a contest reserved to rising Jazz stars in which they were awarded first prize. A few months later, they recorded their first album as a quintet for RCA Italy. It was the birth of a fruitful collaboration, which still lasts. Between 1958 and 1959 the quintet toured extensively; in 1959 the famous venue Il Bussolotto, located on the wonderful coast of Tuscany, hired them to play among the finest Italian jazzmen and in that occasion they had been chosen to support the second tour Chet Baker did in Italy. The band had the opportunity to play for six months in the USA, a period in which they could listen to American musicians in their environment and discover the latest trends. Once back in Italy, bassist Giovanni Tommaso and vibraphonist Antonello Vannucchi took part independently in countless gigs and played with international artists like John Lewis, Kenny Clarke, Chet Baker, Buddy Collette, Bobby Jaspar and René Thomas. This experience was vital for the ensemble, which came back on stage invigorated in the summer of 1961. The Jazz Cup award, the most important radio show organised by RAI (Italian national radio and television) was their crowning moment. ~ Amazon.com

GIANNI ODDI - STYLE

Like Richard Olivers Dicky Oliver, Style was an LP released on the RCA Italy catalogue. Style, is an extremely rare album which was not conceived for sale but for synchronisation purpose only. This was quite common at those times, with many labels producing music for film, radio and tv and consequently pressing limited quantities of wax, which became rapidly collectible. Popoff is a superb example of italian 70s Jazz Funk infused with a characteristic Progressive flavour, which was a trending genre at that time. Among the eleven tracks of the LP Notte a Bagdad and Kimono Pop present wicked grooves and evocative atmospheres Originally released in 1974 now this highly sought-after title is again available on Schema Easy Series. ~ Amazon.com

ANDREAS VARADY - ANDREAS VARADY

Varady blends the accomplished technique of Wes Montgomery, soulful voicing of George Benson and Gypsy swing of Django Reinhardt. While he started absorbing these masters from his parents record collection, he also has a fresh view on their legacy.
I always knew that I was slightly different than other people, Varady said from his family s home in Limerick, Ireland. Not that I was better, but just slightly different. When I was 12, the kids at my school were into casual things, and I was into way different things. This guitarist also stands out from many veteran musicians. Guitar Player put Varady on its cover in 2012 and that summer he performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in front the festival s legendary founder, the late Claude Nobs, and world renowned producer Quincy Jones, who has since taken Varady on as a protégé. Andreas is the complete package, Jones said. He s a 360-degree musician whose knowledge and appreciation for all genres from jazz and hip-hop to rock and pop can be felt in his music. ~ Amazon.com

AZAR LAWRENCE - THE SEEKER

Life is a journey. Some would say that our ultimate objective is to find our truth, our function in the grand scheme of things. Many philosophers and prophets have toiled in efforts to discover life s meaning and the truths of the universe. Though the means and results vary, the seeker will inevitably go on his own path, simply through living, to discover his own truth. Saxophonist Azar Lawrence has been forging his path through music for the past four decades. He has become one of the principal voices of the post-Coltrane age of jazz, a spiritual and musical descendent yet one still forging his own distinct voice and style. Lawrence s new recording The Seeker is an album dedicated to those, like himself, who are on their path and the trailblazers who continue to light their way. Lawrence s journey began in his birthplace of Los Angeles, playing with Horace Tapscott s community-centric Arkestra and onto R&B projects with Ike & Tina Turner, Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band and War. His jazz stars aligned after meeting drummer Elvin Jones at the age of twenty. The former Coltrane collaborator brought the young saxophonist to New York in 1973, where Lawrence lived and played with Jones as a member of the Jazz Machine. The opportunity to record The Seeker presented itself when Lawrence was booked to perform at Jazz Standard in New York City in December 2011. For the performance, the saxophonist wrote new material for an ensemble of stalwart, exemplary musicians. ~ Amazon.com

RAY CHARLES - RAY CHARLES IN THE 1950s

Although universally acknowledged as a true musical genius, Ray Charles was equally a pioneer of a musical genre that flourished during the 1950s, almost exclusively due to his sonic experimentation and development of previous styles. Initially a jazz performer and musician, by the late 1940s Ray had seen enough as a sideman and ventured out under his own name. But it was his signing to Atlantic Records in 1952 which proved the catalyst for Ray Charles to pioneer a new style, soon to be labelled soul music. It was his fusion of R'N'B, blues, jazz, gospel, with a hint pop and country, that he would develop throughout the decade to create arguably the most dynamic, home grown American music genre in history. This 3 CD set contains every track Ray released during the 1950s - and thus provides the definitive collection of Ray Charles material, and therefore by definition, the ultimate early soul music compilation. ~Amazon.com
