BADEN POWELL - LE MONDE MUSICAL DE BADEN POWEL VOL 2
Some of the first
recordings done by Baden Powell outside of Brazil – and already an indication
that his work with the European scene was a very good thing! The record has
Powell upfront on guitar and vocals, but working with these great arrangements
from arranger/trumpeter Ivan Jullien – who plays on the record in a small combo
that features other percussion, and some really great flute from Raymond Guiot!
The mix of flute with Baden's bossa elements is very nice – and really prefaces
some later experiments that would have Powell bringing even more European
elements to his music. The overall vibe is a great precursor to Baden's later
work for MPS – and titles include "Lapinha", "Aria",
"Formosa", "Tres Historias", "Martinia", "Ao
Meu Amigo Pedro Santos", and "Lemanja". ~ Dusty Groove
JOYCE - FEMININA
Beauty,
pure beauty – one of Joyce's greatest albums – and maybe the first record we'd
point to for anyone interested in her music! The set's an incredible blend of
vocals, acoustic guitar, and these lightly gentle arrangements – all at this
new level of expression that still recognizes Joyce's bossa roots, but really
moves beyond with all the sophistication of MPB in the 70s! The sound of the
whole thing is wonderful – completely transcendent and mesmerizing right from
the start – and Joyce penned most of the tunes and handled the arrangements –
with help from Gilson Peranzzetta on a few tracks. Titles include the classic
"Feminina", plus "Essa Mulher", "Coracao De Crianca",
"Aldeia De Ogum", "Compor", and "Misterios". If
you buy just one Joyce album in your life, this might well be it! ~ Dusty Groove
IVAN LINS - A NOITE
A really wonderful
album from Ivan Lins – filled with life, soul, and a free sense of spirit that reminds
us of some of Milton Nascimento's best work from the same period! Ivan's vocals
are set amidst some heavenly arrangements by Gilson Peranzzetta – done with
just the right amount of jazz in the mix, and a nice blend of instrumentation
that often includes electric piano and a bit of strings. Lins is at the height
of his powers here, both vocally and in terms of his songwriting – and the
album ranks as one of his best from the time. Titles include "A Voz Do
Povo", "Formigueiro", "Antes Que Seja Tarde", and
"Noites Sertanejas". ~ Dusty Groove
