The Serendipity of “More Light” – Laura Teller’s Unscripted Magic

Sometimes, the best things in music happen by accident.

Singer-songwriter Laura Teller hadn’t planned to record “More Light”—at least, not the version that ended up on her latest album. The song had been through countless iterations with lyrics that never quite felt right. But during a recording session, with unexpected time left and only one more lead sheet in hand, she decided to give it a shot.

She laid down a few takes with a group of stellar session musicians, and just for reference, added a spontaneous scat vocal. The result? Pure magic. That improvised scat felt more honest and alive than any of the lyrics she’d spent months trying to finalize. So that’s what she kept. More Light became a song without words—but not without feeling.

Laura’s journey has always been about heart over polish, instinct over perfection. Born and raised in the suburbs of Philadelphia, her first “gig” was disrupting her family’s Seder at age two with a song of her own creation. Piano lessons came at six (prompted by her mother’s tolerance limit for off-key banging), and by her teens, Laura had already caught the attention of legendary producers Gamble and Huff.

At Yale, she sang in cover bands, led a popular folk/jazz group, and starred in a student-produced rock opera. After graduation, she spent five years as a full-time musician, followed by two at Harvard Business School—possibly its first singer-songwriter admittee—before joining McKinsey & Co.

Despite building a successful consulting practice, music never left her side. A milestone birthday prompted Laura to return to the studio, this time in Austin, Texas, where she recorded basic tracks at Bismeaux Studio with some of the city’s best musicians. Back in collaboration with veteran producer Warren Schatz (RCA Records, “Turn the Beat Around,” “Shame”), the final touches were added.

The result is More Light—an album rooted in decades of songwriting, experience, and the spontaneity of a last-minute scat.

As Laura Teller proves, sometimes the path you didn’t plan becomes the one that lights the way.

LUKE STEWART // SILT REMEMBRANCE ENSEMBLE

Blending two of his standout groups — the Remembrance Quintet and the Silt Trio — Luke Stewart’s The Order isn’t just a live recording. It’s a carefully crafted narrative experience, reshaped after an epic studio performance to tell a deep, flowing story through sound.

The album explores themes of memory, survival, ancestral roots, and the preciousness of shared time. Spoken word performances by No Land and Janice Lowe link The Order thematically to Stewart’s earlier Remembrance work, weaving poetry directly into the music.

Tracks like “Memory” and “River Road” showcase Daniel Carter’s luminous horn work, set against the heavy groove of Stewart’s bass and Chad Taylor’s inventive percussion. Pieces like “Survive” reference Carter's groundbreaking history with groups like In Order to Survive, while "Chain Gang" evokes struggles past and present, finding catharsis in communal rhythm.

Luke Stewart's method fuses free improvisation with a deep intuitive structure — musical lines and rhythms are introduced without roadmaps, allowing the ensemble to react instinctively, creating compositions that feel alive and urgent.

More About Luke Stewart and His Collaborators

Luke Stewart’s rise from Mississippi's Gulf Coast to a key voice in New York’s avant-garde jazz scene is a story of self-discovery and fearless exploration. After surviving Hurricane Katrina and moving to D.C., he quickly became a central figure, both onstage and behind the scenes — co-founding CapitalBop.com and hosting shows on WPFW radio.

Each member of the Silt Remembrance Ensemble brings decades of deep musical roots:

  • Daniel Carter, nearing his 80th birthday, is a living legend whose collaborations span the worlds of jazz, experimental rock, and hip-hop.

  • Brian Settles, a D.C. native, moves effortlessly between tight ensemble work and open-ended improvisation.

  • Jamal Moore bridges jazz tradition and Afro-futurism, creating new soundscapes from Baltimore’s vital creative scene.

  • Chad Taylor, one of the most sought-after drummers in free music today, has worked with giants like Fred Anderson, Pharoah Sanders, and Nicole Mitchell.

Together, they embody the spirit of exploration and remembrance, making The Order a powerful testament to the music’s roots — and its endless future.

Ludwig Göransson and Ryan Coogler Reunite for Sinners — A Blues-Driven Soundtrack That Redefines Storytelling

Sony Classical and Sony Masterworks have officially released both the Original Score and Original Soundtrack for Ryan Coogler’s highly anticipated new film Sinners, with music composed and produced by Oscar-winner Ludwig Göransson. Set in the Mississippi Delta of 1932, Sinners is a thrilling, genre-bending story that dives deep into the cultural roots of American blues — and Göransson’s music plays a powerful role in bringing that world to life.

*Sinners* marks the fifth feature film collaboration between Göransson and Coogler, following their work on Creed and Black Panther. But this project is different. Göransson describes scoring Sinners as the most personal project of his career, one that deeply connects to his own upbringing and lifelong passion for the guitar.

At the heart of both the score and soundtrack is a 1932 Dobro resonator guitar, the same kind carried by Sinners’ young blues prodigy, Preacher Boy (played by breakout star Miles Caton). To fully immerse himself in the sound and spirit of the Delta, Göransson even traveled to the Deep South, tracing the birthplace of blues firsthand — an experience that left a lasting impact on the music you hear throughout Sinners.

Adding a unique layer of authenticity, several of the film’s actors are also seasoned musicians performing live onscreen — including Buddy Guy, Lola Kirke, Jayme Lawson, and Jack O’Connell. Rising star Miles Caton is a standout, contributing powerful vocal performances across multiple tracks, including the emotional centerpiece “I Lied To You,” co-written with Grammy-winner Raphael Saadiq.

The Sinners (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is a stunning mix of tradition and innovation, featuring an impressive lineup of artists spanning genres and generations. Highlights include:

  • Hailee Steinfeld’s explosive return to music with the bluesy-pop anthem “Dangerous”

  • Rod Wave’s stirring lead single “Sinners,” debuting alongside a Coogler-directed video

  • James Blake’s haunting “Séance”

  • Brittany Howard’s searing cover of "Pale, Pale Moon"

  • And Rhiannon Giddens' lively, banjo-driven “Old Corn Liquor”

Göransson explains, "We weren’t aiming for nostalgia; we wanted it to feel immediate. Much of the music was written and recorded on set with the cast and crew working alongside us. That gave Sinners a sound that's connected to the past but alive in the present."

If you’re a fan of music that feels raw, lived-in, and completely soul-stirring, this album — and film — are not to be missed.

Paloma Dineli Chesky: A Fearless New Voice Blending Jazz, Pop, and Raw Emotion

It’s rare to find a young artist who already knows she refuses to be confined to one genre. Meet Paloma Dineli Chesky, the vibrant New York-based singer-songwriter whose debut album Memory proves she’s ready to carve her own musical path. "I don’t want to be put in a box," Paloma says. "I love highly produced pop music, but I’ve also always loved jazz and timeless older artists. Right now, I’m blending the two worlds, trying to find my own voice. This is who I am."

On Memory, Paloma showcases her jazz-inflected acoustic side with six personal originals and three meaningful covers—some of which you may have already seen her perform in pop-driven versions on YouTube. It's a stunning introduction to a crossover career filled with raw power, emotional depth, and a style uniquely her own. As Steve Hart, host of Just Jazz, put it: Paloma has “a voice that could stop traffic.”

A Pandemic Awakening

Paloma’s journey to Memory was shaped heavily by the pandemic. Schooled through the New York Philharmonic’s Very Young Composers program, she had been studying composition and piano when COVID-19 halted the world. Encouraged by program director Jon Deak to weave lyrics into her compositions, Paloma leaned fully into songwriting. "Singing was always natural for me," she recalls.

While stuck at home, she taught herself music production using Logic Pro. When the world reopened, she finally stepped into a real studio with live musicians to bring Memory to life.

Songs from the Heart

From the moment Memory opens with Paloma’s soulful, bluesy take on the classic “Summertime,” it’s clear she’s not content to simply cover standards—she transforms them. "‘Summertime’ has been recorded so many times. I wanted to create a fresh groove and approach it my way," she says.

Her original songs are just as moving. The bittersweet “When the Moon’s Away” captures the feeling of joy being quickly followed by chaos and heartbreak. "People cry when I sing this," Paloma says. "It speaks to those moments when the light is overtaken by darkness."

A Musical Legacy, But a Voice All Her Own

Coming from an artistic family—her father, David Chesky, is a composer and pianist, and her mother, Patrícia Dinely, is a celebrated Brazilian actress—Paloma grew up surrounded by creativity. But her music is deeply personal and fiercely independent. "They support me, but they give me complete freedom. I write alone. These are my ideas, my sound," she explains.

Her talent was recognized early. In 2023, when ballerina Michaela Mabinty DePrince performed at Lincoln Center’s Youth America Grand Prix gala, producers chose Paloma’s song “Green” as the event’s centerpiece. Paloma performed it live, forming a bond with DePrince before her tragic and unexpected passing. Now, every time Paloma sings “Green,” it carries even deeper meaning.

Building Memory — And A Career

Memory is stripped-down and acoustic, emphasizing authenticity. Joining her are tenor saxophonist Maxwell Barnes, bassist Chris Ramirez, drummer Danno Peterson, and guitarist/musical director Michael Hilgendorf. "I wanted a mix closer to pop, so Michael was the perfect fit," Paloma says.

The album features standouts like:

  • "Baby Face": A playful, sax-driven swing that reflects on the lasting power of soul beyond youthful appearances.

  • "Memory": The title track, a sweet farewell ballad inspired by leaving Brazil to return to New York.

  • "Diamonds": A mid-tempo journey rich with metaphors about savoring the moment.

  • "Sober Now": Perhaps her most popular song to date, a poetic reflection on healing from addictive relationships.

When it comes to covers, Paloma is highly selective. She delivers a fierce, emotionally charged rendition of “House of the Rising Sun,” while offering a tender, Portuguese-sung version of the bossa nova classic “Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars).” "I'm part Brazilian," she says. "Singing it feels like coming home."

An Artist to Watch

Paloma Dineli Chesky is a fearless young artist blending her many influences—jazz, pop, blues, bossa nova—into a style that’s all her own. Memory is just the beginning.

"I want to tie different styles and ideas together," Paloma says. "Through my chords and lyrics, I’m telling my story. I'm sharing my experiences, and hoping to connect deeply with my audience."

Memory will be released June 19, 2025, on The Audiophile Society label. It’s a must-listen debut from an artist you’re sure to hear much more from in the future.

ESKA Returns with "The Ordinary Life of a Magic Woman" — A Spellbinding Fusion of Soul, Resistance & Ritual

Ten years after her Mercury Prize-nominated debut, British artist ESKA returns with a genre-defying masterwork: The Ordinary Life of a Magic Woman. Released today in physical formats via Earthling Recordings, this deeply personal album is a radiant reflection of motherhood, survival, and self-determination.

Described by The Wire Magazine as “an album of adventurous Avant Garde fusion that goes as hard as any Miles Davis, Björk, Prince or A Tribe Called Quest,” the record is an odyssey through sound and selfhood. Crafted in the early hours of Southeast London, The Ordinary Life of a Magic Woman is ESKA’s sonic journal — a mirror of life as a first-generation African British woman, home-educating her daughter while conjuring bold, mystical compositions.

The latest single, "Daddy Long Legs", released today alongside the album, is a cathartic, synth-laced ritual of reclaiming power. Co-written with Jesse Hackett and featuring spectral sax by Soweto Kinch and vocals from Laura Groves, the track pulses with hypnotic force. “It felt so good that you would think it was love,” ESKA sings — an unflinching lyric that cuts deep.

This single follows three standout releases: "Down Here", "Magic Woman", and "Human", each offering a different facet of ESKA’s evolving sound. The full album, which blends glitchy textures, funk-infused beats, and mythic lyricism, lands today on vinyl and CD, with digital to follow May 23rd.

In a bold move, ESKA has chosen to lead with physical formats. “Some listeners crave a deeper experience,” she says. “This is about reclaiming control and honoring the ritual of music.”

Upcoming in-store performances and appearances throughout the UK offer fans an intimate glimpse into the world of one of Britain’s most innovative voices. With collaborations spanning Esperanza Spalding, Grace Jones, Shabaka Hutchings, and more, ESKA is not just “one of the most important singers in the UK” (Gilles Peterson), but a visionary composer and conceptualist rewriting the rules of music its

Dane Donohue Returns with LA Rainbow – A Timeless AOR Revival

After a remarkable 46-year hiatus, Dane Donohue—a once-overlooked gem of the late '70s AOR scene—has returned with L.A. Rainbow, a follow-up to his cult-classic 1978 debut. Released in September 2024 on Japan’s P-VINE Records, the album has garnered international acclaim, reaffirming Donohue's enduring artistry.

Born in Richland County, Ohio, Donohue's musical journey began unexpectedly during a period of bed rest at age 15, when he picked up a guitar and immersed himself in The Beatles' music. After earning a communications degree from The Ohio State University, he toured as Jesus in a production of Jesus Christ Superstar, eventually leading to a recording contract with Columbia Records. His 1978 self-titled debut featured an impressive lineup, including Stevie Nicks, Don Henley, and members of Toto, yet it remained under the radar. Reflecting on that time, Donohue often quipped, “I was the only unknown on that record” .

The resurgence of interest in his music, bolstered by streaming platforms and inclusion in Spotify’s Yacht Rock playlist, inspired Donohue to create L.A. Rainbow. Co-produced with John H. Nixon of Page 99, the album was recorded across studios in Detroit, Indianapolis, and Ohio. Tracks like “Lonely Day In Paradise” and “High Life Dream” showcase Donohue's signature blend of soulful melodies and smooth grooves, evoking the essence of his earlier work while embracing contemporary production .

Donohue's return has been met with enthusiasm from fans and critics alike. A review from Germany-based WEST COAST SOUL noted, “It’s a rare feat for an artist to return after such a long hiatus and sound not just relevant but inspired” . With L.A. Rainbow, Donohue not only revisits the sound that defined his early career but also introduces it to a new generation of listeners.

Brian Jackson, Kenny Dope, and Louie Vega Release "It’s Your World" (Feat. Raheem DeVaughn, J. Ivy)

The legendary Brian Jackson—best known as Gil Scott-Heron’s longtime co-writer and musical partner—steps forward with a powerful new release, "It’s Your World," produced by the iconic Masters At Work duo, Kenny Dope and Louie Vega. Featuring stirring contributions from Raheem DeVaughn and J. Ivy, this single bridges past and present with a rich, soulful sound that’s deeply resonant today.

Brian Jackson reflects on the song’s origins:

"Back when I wrote this song, the latest greeting in the hood was 'What’s happening, baby?' For a while brothers settled on: 'Ah man, it’s your world.'
As a twenty-something, shy kid from Brooklyn, that phrase made me start thinking that if it’s really true, I must be okay—whoever and wherever I was.
This song was Brian reassuring Brian—and other Brians—who might have needed it too."

Fast forward to 2025, and "It’s Your World" is reborn as an 11-minute sonic journey. With high-value production from Louie Vega and Kenny Dope, the track weaves lush soundscapes featuring string arrangements by Leroy Burgess (performed by the Apple Hill String Quartet). It masterfully blends tradition with innovation, honoring Jackson’s legacy while moving his music forward.

Raheem DeVaughn, celebrated for his genre-bending voice and emotional delivery, brings the song to life, shifting seamlessly through tones and feelings. Meanwhile, Grammy Award-winning poet J. Ivy adds a poetic spirit, delivering mantras that echo the song’s themes of self-worth and empowerment.

"It’s Your World" is the first taste of Brian Jackson’s forthcoming album, Now More Than Ever—a reimagining of 17 classic tracks co-written with Gil Scott-Heron, brought into the present with fresh energy and a new cast of collaborators.

If you want an early taste, the radio edit is available now exclusively on Bandcamp—don’t miss it!

Keith Mitchell Reclaims His Voice and His Faith with Soul-Stirring Gospel Debut, “He’s Alive”

In a moving and spirit-filled leap from chart-topping R&B to gospel, veteran singer Keith Mitchell—formerly of Grammy-nominated group After 7—steps into the spotlight as a solo artist with his debut single “He’s Alive.” Overflowing with praise, testimony, and an undeniable groove, the track marks a powerful return to the spiritual roots that shaped him long before the limelight ever found him.

A Journey Full Circle

Though best known for his role in After 7, the acclaimed R&B trio formed in 1987 alongside Melvin and Kevon Edmonds, Keith’s spiritual journey began far earlier. Raised in Indianapolis, Mitchell met Christ at the age of seven at Zion Tabernacle Pentecostal Church, where he was baptized in the Name of Jesus and spoke in tongues shortly thereafter. He performed with his siblings as The Stars of Zion and became the director of the young adult choir by age 13. But perhaps most remarkably, his mother recalled a night when a six-week-old Keith—barely old enough to coo—was heard speaking the phrase “I’m walking in the light” from his crib. That light has followed him ever since.

From Platinum Success to a Higher Calling

With After 7, Keith helped craft timeless romantic anthems like “Ready or Not” and “Can’t Stop,” songs that soared up the R&B and Billboard charts. Yet, even during his musical high points, there remained a deeper calling. After years of touring, recording, and navigating the industry, Mitchell left After 7 in January 2025 to answer that call with full conviction. His debut gospel single, “He’s Alive,” is the result—a song born from decades of lived experience, spiritual searching, and heartfelt praise.

The Message in the Music

“He’s Alive” is both a declaration of personal faith and an invitation to others to experience the living presence of Christ. With his rich vocals and dynamic delivery, Keith offers lyrics that speak to the core of the believer’s journey. From the opening line—“No need to feel despair…God will meet you on the road”—to the energetic rap bridge that asks, “When you find the Lord…Will you testify what he did with your life?” the track offers encouragement, clarity, and truth in equal measure.

It’s the first single from Mitchell’s upcoming gospel album Food for Your Life, a collection of mostly up-tempo praise and worship songs that reflect the transformation he’s undergone and the faith he now boldly shares. Tracks like “The Kingdom,” “I Owe Him My Life,” and “I Just Love to Love the Lord” are poised to become anthems for the faithful. A standout, “Virtuous Woman,” inspired by Proverbs 31:10, pays tribute to women of noble character and spiritual strength.

From Wandering to Witness

Mitchell’s return to gospel is not just artistic—it’s deeply personal. Despite his early spiritual foundation, Keith drifted from the church in his teenage years, spending decades chasing success in finance and music while feeling spiritually unmoored. Everything changed when he encountered the ministry of Creflo Dollar in Atlanta. Through those teachings, Mitchell found clarity, understanding, and a renewed purpose.

“Taking His Word and putting it into words and melodies has truly helped me find answers to who I am, what my purpose is and why God is such an all-encompassing Presence in my life,” Mitchell says.

A Voice Reborn

“He’s Alive” is more than just a single—it’s the sound of a soul awakened, an artist reborn, and a man fully walking in his calling. Keith Mitchell may have once been known for serenading the brokenhearted, but now his voice resounds with something greater: hope, truth, and an unshakable love for the Lord.

As he prepares for the full release of Food for Your Life later in 2025, one thing is clear—Keith Mitchell is no longer singing about love between people. He’s singing about a higher love. And with “He’s Alive,” he invites us all to lift our voices in praise right along with him.

Saxophonist/Composer Hillai Govreen to Release New Album Every Other Now

With Every Other Now, saxophonist and composer Hillai Govreen delivers a bold and emotionally rich sonic journey that pushes beyond convention. This deeply collaborative project—crafted alongside bassist and co-producer Ben Meigners—features an elite lineup of New York-based musicians including Steve Cardenas, Eric McPherson, Eden Ladin, and Café Da Silva. The result is an expansive, genre-defying collection that captures both the uncertainty and vitality of contemporary life.

The recording is an invitation to enter a space where vulnerability, improvisation, and technical prowess converge. Mitch Borden, a longtime observer of New York’s jazz scene, perfectly captured the magic:

“Something in my heart leapt the first time I heard this music live… The atmosphere on stage gets heavy as someone begins to stretch… The music presented here is quite real. It is streetwise and intuitive. Its imagery is fashioned by bare passion and powerful imagination.”

Govreen's compositions do more than simply challenge the standard jazz idiom—they reshape it. While much of modern jazz grapples with precision and technical mastery, Govreen embraces the fluidity of expression. Every note feels lived-in. Every phrase feels personal. Original works on the album are more than compositions—they’re emotional reflections, raw sketches of life's uncertain, beautiful moments.

Track Personnel

  • Hillai Govreen – Tenor Saxophone, Clarinet

  • Noah Stoneman – Piano, Rhodes (tracks 1–4, 8, 9)

  • Eden Ladin – Piano, Synth (tracks 5, 6)

  • Steve Cardenas – Guitar (tracks 1–3, 5, 6)

  • Ben Meigners – Upright Bass, Electric Bass

  • Eric McPherson – Drums (tracks 1–3, 5–7, 9)

  • William West – Drums (tracks 4, 8)

  • Café Da Silva – Percussion (tracks 3, 4, 8)

  • Greg Glassman – Trumpet (track 8)

Hillai Govreen is a clarinetist, saxophonist, and composer based in New York City. Known for her lyrical phrasing and genre-blending approach, Govreen is a dynamic voice on today’s jazz scene. Every Other Now is her second full-length project, following her debut album Allusions (2021), a duet with pianist Nitsan Kolko that explored spontaneous musical storytelling.

A graduate of The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, Hillai studied under jazz greats including Anat Cohen, Chris Cheek, Tony Malaby, Billy Harper, and Steve Cardenas. She has performed at some of New York’s most revered venues, such as Smalls, Mezzrow, Birdland, Dizzy’s Club, National Sawdust, and Ornithology. Her international tours have taken her across Europe, the U.S., Israel, and India.

Before relocating to the U.S., Hillai was raised in Israel, where she began classical piano studies at age six and later focused on clarinet under the mentorship of Professor Michael Gurfinkel. She received full scholarships and awards from the American Israel Cultural Foundation and was the principal clarinetist for the Young Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra.

Hillai is also an endorsing artist for P. Mauriat saxophones and clarinets.

With Every Other Now, Hillai Govreen stakes a powerful claim as a visionary artist deeply attuned to the emotional and philosophical resonance of music. It’s a recording that speaks to our shared humanity—with all its contradictions, improvisations, and fleeting beauty.

Joshua Redman Announces New Album Words Fall Short – A Journey of Collaboration and Innovation

Jazz saxophonist Joshua Redman is set to release his highly anticipated second album on Blue Note, Words Fall Short, on June 20, 2025. The album features an exciting new chapter in Redman's career, with a collection of original compositions brought to life by his new quartet. The quartet—comprising pianist Paul Cornish, bassist Philip Norris, and drummer Nazir Ebo—was formed as a working band during the world tour for Redman’s 2023 label debut where are we. With steady performances on the road, Redman found inspiration and synergy within the band, leading to the creation of Words Fall Short.

A New Musical Direction for Redman

Words Fall Short marks a natural evolution for Redman, who has been a dominant force in jazz for decades. Unlike his previous album, which featured the collaboration with vocalist Gabrielle Cavassa, this new project embraces a more intimate, ensemble-based sound. The compositions for Words Fall Short were created during the pandemic, a time that brought about various emotions such as wistfulness, sadness, and resolve. These themes are especially present in the stunning opening track, “A Message To Unsend,” which captures a deep emotional resonance through Redman’s signature saxophone style.

In speaking about the album, Redman emphasizes that Words Fall Short was not a project he willed into being. “It’s impossible for me to will a project into being,” he shares. Instead, the album grew organically out of the chemistry formed during the quartet’s live performances. Words Fall Short features not just new compositions, but also special guest appearances by talented artists such as vocalist Gabrielle Cavassa, saxophonist Melissa Aldana, and trumpeter Skylar Tang.

The Quartet: A Perfect Balance of Youth and Experience

Redman’s new rhythm section is a standout feature of the album, bringing fresh energy to the compositions. In particular, bassist Philip Norris and drummer Nazir Ebo have made a significant impact on Redman, who praises their unique qualities. Norris, in particular, reminds Redman of the great Christian McBride with his ability to blend precision and creativity. Meanwhile, Ebo’s groove is flexible and dynamic, allowing him to navigate complex rhythms with ease while always serving the song.

By the summer of 2023, Paul Cornish completed the quartet’s transformation. Cornish brings a perfect balance of empathy and challenge to the group, helping the band push boundaries while keeping the music grounded in a natural flow. This synergy within the quartet is evident throughout Words Fall Short, as each member has their moment to shine while contributing to the collective sound.

Redman’s approach to bandleading remains consistent with his previous work—surrounding himself with virtuoso musicians who excel not just in their technique but also in their ability to collaborate and listen. The ensemble’s dynamic is one of spontaneity and sensitivity, creating a fluid yet cohesive musical experience.

The Tracklist: A Fusion of Emotion and Improvisation

The eight tracks on Words Fall Short each reflect different aspects of Redman’s emotional and creative journey. As a listener, you'll experience a rich tapestry of sounds, from heartfelt melodies to adventurous improvisations. Redman’s compositions, though rooted in personal experiences, are not fully explained, allowing the music to speak for itself and enabling listeners to find their own meaning in each piece.

The special guest appearances also add depth to the album, particularly the contributions from Melissa Aldana and Skylar Tang. Their collaborations bring additional layers of creativity to Redman’s already rich compositions.

Celebrate Words Fall Short at the Blue Note

To celebrate the release of Words Fall Short, Joshua Redman and his quartet will perform at the legendary Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City from June 20-22, 2025. The trio will bring their innovative sounds to the stage, showcasing the chemistry and collaboration that define this exciting new chapter in Redman’s career. In addition to the Blue Note performances, the quartet will be touring across the U.S. and Europe this summer, so be sure to check out their schedule and catch them live.

Julian Shore Unveils His Stunning New Trio Album Sub Rosa – A Journey into Beauty, Mystery, and Meaning

Rising star pianist and composer Julian Shore is back with his highly anticipated second trio album, Sub Rosa, set for release on June 6, 2025, via Chill Tone. The album features Shore's remarkable trio, consisting of bassist Martin Nevin and drummer Allan Mednard, and builds on the deeply personal and intuitive chemistry they cultivated on their 2023 debut album. Known for his quiet sophistication and insightful musical voice, Shore once again brings forward a collection of evocative compositions that speak volumes in abstract form.

Sub Rosa—Latin for "under the rose," a symbol historically associated with secrecy and confidential discussions—serves as the perfect metaphor for the album's enigmatic nature. From its intricate melodies to the band’s seamless interplay, the music is a conversation between sounds, emotions, and unspoken narratives. Jazz has always been a coded language, and Shore embraces that concept to its fullest, using it as a tool to convey complex emotions and experiences without explicit explanation.

A Trio's Evolution: From the Debut to Sub Rosa

While their 2023 self-titled debut album was an informal affair recorded soon after the lifting of lockdown restrictions, Sub Rosa reflects over two years of shared experiences and growth. The trio’s remarkable fluidity and sense of trust have been honed over time, and the music flows with a rare sense of ease and precision. Shore’s compositions, though deeply personal, remain open to interpretation, allowing listeners to find their own connection with each track. As Shore explains, his titles hint at his life experiences, but he deliberately keeps their full meaning hidden. “The music is the talking,” he shares, echoing the sentiments of film director David Lynch who once expressed his frustration with explaining the cryptic nature of his work.

Wayne Shorter: A Key Influence on Sub Rosa

One of the most profound influences on Shore’s music is the legendary saxophonist Wayne Shorter, who passed on invaluable lessons about musical abstraction. Shore had the privilege of studying with Shorter at Berklee College of Music, and Shorter’s ethos of embracing the unknown is woven throughout Sub Rosa. The album’s opener, “Messenger,” is a direct nod to Shorter’s tenure with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, while the reflective second track, “Mission,” draws inspiration from Shorter’s final words, “It’s time for me to get a new body and continue the mission.”

Shorter’s legacy is felt throughout the entire album, especially in the trio’s take on “All the Things You Are”—a jazz standard that has been endlessly deconstructed by musicians over the years. Shore’s rendition takes this well-known tune to new heights, offering a fresh, kaleidoscopic interpretation. Similarly, the trio’s rendition of Brian Wilson’s “Don’t Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)” from The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds stays true to its heart while allowing the trio to explore and shape the song’s emotional depth.

Encapsulating the Personal and the Universal

The original compositions on Sub Rosa blend beauty with spontaneity, rooted in Shore’s personal experiences but leaving room for listeners to make their own interpretations. From health struggles close to home to moments of waking dreams, the music embodies a range of emotional landscapes. The trio’s impeccable chemistry is evident in every track, as each member brings their own sense of maturity, intuition, and humor to the table. Shore praises his bandmates: “Allan is one of the most in-demand drummers in New York, and Martin is the most mature musician I’ve ever played with.”

Despite the hidden meanings embedded in the music, the trio’s emotional and intellectual depth is immediately apparent. Sub Rosa rewards the listener who is willing to uncover the layers of complexity and emotion that Shore and his trio have carefully woven into every note.

Legacy in Harmony: Nathan and Noah East Deliver a Timeless Father-Son Jazz Collaboration

n the spirit of iconic family collaborations—think Bob and Jakob Dylan, Bob and Ziggy Marley, Joshua and Dewey Redman—comes Father Son, the long-awaited joint album from legendary bassist Nathan East and his son, Noah East, a gifted 25-year-old pianist and organist. The album is a celebration of generational talent and artistic intimacy, wrapped in warm jazz tones and classic soul stylings.

Nathan East is a household name among session musicians, known not only for his foundational role in the contemporary jazz supergroup Fourplay, but also for decades of touring and recording with the likes of Phil Collins, Daft Punk, and most notably, Eric Clapton. The latter returns the favor here, lending his guitar work to two standout tracks—adding both a nostalgic touch and a stamp of rock royalty to the project.

Produced by GRAMMY®-winner Moogie Canazio and recorded at EastWest Studios in Los Angeles, Father Son spans musical styles—from Great American Songbook standards to original compositions, to reimagined ‘70s soul tracks. It's an album rooted in jazz duo and trio dynamics but flavored with blues, classical, and straight-ahead swing.

Guest artists like Merry Clayton, Hubert Laws, and Billy Valentine provide seasoned texture to the arrangements, but it’s Noah East who truly shines as a revelation. His stylistic range—from subtle, contemplative jazz piano to punchy Hammond organ grooves—adds a freshness that signals a bright future.

For vinyl lovers, Father Son is a must-have. The warm analog press accentuates the album’s layered instrumentation and gives its heartfelt energy a tactile presence—perfect for late-night spins or quiet Sunday mornings.

At its core, Father Son is a narrative of connection—between a father and son, between tradition and innovation, between past and future. With stellar musicianship and emotional depth, Nathan and Noah East have created something more than just music. They’ve created legacy.

Emma-Jean Thackray Breaks Boundaries with "Weirdo" – A Bold Leap Into Sonic Stardom

If you’ve been following Emma-Jean Thackray’s journey from the fringes of experimental jazz to the frontlines of genre-defying groove, then her latest offering, Weirdo, is about to blow your mind—and quite possibly land her in the orbit of musical superstardom.

Dropping via Brownswood Recordings, Weirdo is a far cry from her earlier, more traditional jazz explorations. Here, Thackray leans fully into the eclectic—crafting tracks that blend soulful hooks, edgy textures, and head-nodding rhythms with a touch of cosmic flair. While jazz remains at the DNA level, the vocals take center stage, delivering a refreshing blend of vulnerability and confidence.

Collaborators like Reggie Watts and Kassa Overall bring even more unpredictability and depth to the album, helping shape a record that’s simultaneously catchy and complex. Think jazzy psychedelia meets soulful pop, filtered through the offbeat creativity that’s made Thackray a key figure in the UK scene.

Tracks like "Please Leave Me Alone", "Fried Rice", and "I Don’t Recognize My Hands" showcase her ability to balance introspection with playfulness. Meanwhile, "Thank You For The Day" might just be your next repeat-on-loop moment.

Available now for pre-order on CD  and a clear vinyl pressing for the collectors, Weirdo officially lands on Friday, April 25. Trust us, you’re going to want to hit play the second it arrives.
