Alune Wade Blends West African Rhythms with New Orleans Brass in His Sixth Studio Album 'New African Orleans'

In his sixth and latest album “New African Orleans”, released by ENJA and Yellow Bird, bass guitarist and composer Alune Wade explores the multiple junctions between his native West African rhythms, the Afrobeat and juju rhythms from Lagos and the brass band repertoire immortalized in New Orleans. “I’m exploring a world that goes from my roots to the lost branches on the other side of the Atlantic,” explains the musician from Senegal. He has whittled down around 50 compositions – both original and standards - to a dozen which Alune recorded in Paris, Dakar, Lagos and New Orleans. “The idea first came to me during the Jazz à Gorée festival I organized back in 2014,” he explains. “It had me reflect on the notion of reversing the musical trip most people take from the United States to the African continent. I wanted to set out westward and begin a musical conversation with the best artists, both in Nigeria and the US.”

To achieve this, Wade has invited top artists from both sides of the Atlantic, including the Nigerian talking drummer Olaore Muyiwa Ayandeji, the percussionist Weedie Braimah and the jazz drummer Herlin Riley from New Orleans. The musical inspirations are equally transatlantic, ranging from Dr. John to Manu Dibango and Charlie Parker. But Alune also pays homage to his father who was a brass band star in his native Senegal back in the Sixties.

THE COMPOSITIONS

Alune Wade begins this exploration with three new versions of global standards. This features a biting reinterpretation of Watermelon Man by Herbie Hancock. Alune transforms this 1962 hard bop standard into a vibrant song dominated by his Afrobeat bass drive and sharp guitar solos. “The song also pays homage to Manu Dibango and the huge legacy he left behind.” This is followed by an energetic version of Jimi Hendrix’ classic Voodoo Child which Alune sings in his native Wolof. It takes a degree of audacity to tackle this 1968 standard from Jimi Hendrix, featuring fast-driving arrangements that turns Voodoo Child (Slight Return) on its head. This version sparkles through the driving rhythms of Cyril Atef and a strong brass section of saxophones and trumpets led by the masterful Victor Ademofe. This song honors the crossover passions Hendrix upheld, as describes by English journalist Charles Shaar Murray: “With 'Voodoo Child' - and, most specifically, with the West African even-before-Bo-Diddley beat he percussively scratches from his guitar and wah-wah pedal at the beginning of 'Voodoo Child (Slight Return)' – (Hendrix) is announcing as explicitly as possible that he is a man of the blues, and one who honours, respects and understands its deepest and most profound traditions".

And, precisely, the latter sees a homage to his song Water No Get Enemy in which Alune slows down the tempo and makes it a dreamy version of this standard which underlines the power of nature. The lyrics also suggest that if a country’s political opposition works with nature, its victory is guaranteed.

After these standards, the West African bass player focuses on several original compositions which explore the New Orleans sound, with its brass front line of trumpet, clarinet and trombone allying itself with syncopated rhythms and a strong backbeat. These sounds complement lyrics about the universality of food (Same Foufou), hospitality on both sides of the Atlantic (Three Baobabs) and the perils of travel (Taxi Driver).

The boogie woogie and juju styles from the east and west coasts of the Atlantic Ocean are like a brother and sister torn apart by the vicissitudes of History. In composing this song Boogie & Juju, Wade conjured up pictures of, on the one hand, Little Richard fusing boogie-woogie, New Orleans R&B and the gospels. And, on the other, the Nigerian juju of King Sunny Ade and the Assiko rhythms from Cameroon, played on a bottle with metal. These harmonize seamlessly to evoke the chanting at football matches in Senegal which echo into the samba from Salvador de Bahia. The song features a strong brass section led by New Orleans trumpeter Andrew Baham.

And Alune returns to the underlying theme of the album with the song From Congo to Square, ft the Afro American singer Somi, which recounts the odyssey of brass band music, how its kernels were shipped across the ocean from the west African coasts and grew under oppression and violence. The clarinet, bass, saxophone and voices featured describe this odyssey which began in the square in 1724.

Arguably one of the most touching illustrations of this cross-Atlantic reflection is Alune’s interpretation of Gris Gris Gombo Yaya. This 1968 underground classic by Dr. John captures the mystique of swampy South Louisiana and the Senegalese bass player delivers a powerful Afrobeat version of this ageless New Orleans standard. Dr John Rebbenack announced himself to the world with this haunting song. As writer Richie Unterberger put it: “The blend of druggy deep blues, incantational background vocals, exotic mandolin and banjo trills, ritualistic percussion, interjections of free jazz, and Dr. John's own seductive-yet-menacing growl was like a psychedelic voodoo ceremony invading your living room.” The New Orleans icon is known for having resuscitated a mysterious 19th century artist who signed his compositions ‘Dr. John Creaux’ (hence Dr. John’s stage name). Unconfirmed rumors claim that Creaux was a Senegalese prince reduced to enslavement in Cuba! Creaux went on to gain his freedom as a sailor who settled in Congo Square.Once again, we see an intriguing possible link to Alune Wade’s native homeland.

These are some of the featured songs Alune Wade includes in an album he will be releasing in early 2025. They are a powerful tribute to the resilience and impact of songs rooted in Africa which survived the horrors of the Middle Passage and gave birth to some of the most important music our societies know, sounds which bathed Alune’s musical education from the start. Indeed, there is a more personal reason for this album. His father, Serigne Fallou Wade, played the French horn and was one of the stars of the Senegalese Army brass band. After studying in the Paris Conservatoire, he became a key member of the band, composing music which mixed traditional Senegalese sounds with classical brass band fanfares. The band was founded in 1961 for the nascent nation and Alune’s father shared his love for brass band compositions with his family throughout his upbringing.

BACKGROUND

We only have a partial idea of the birth and remarkable development of the music born of the transatlantic slave trade. From Malinke ballads to Cuban son, from call-and-response patterns to field hollers and hip-hop, Yoruba rhythms to Argentinian tango, from Angolan percussions to the New Orleans brass band sounds… all have roots in Africa and a shackled migration that lasted four centuries. No more so than Congo Square in the Louisiana capital. In 2024, we mark the 300th anniversary of the implementation of the Code Noir which “gave enslaved Africans Sundays off to dance”. A drop in the ocean, but one which shows the importance of culture as a lifebuoy against this barbaric trade. As the Guadeloupian writer Daniel Maximin once claimed: “Our music guided us from the scream to the song, from dragging our chains to dancing.”

Recordings for this unique album begin in Saint-Louis, Senegal, and Lagos, Nigeria, around the month of May 2024

Fred Moten & Brandon Lopez Share Electrifying New Album "Revision" - Featuring Single "#2"

Poet/Theorist Fred Moten and Bassist Brandon Lopez are set to release their highly anticipated collaborative album, Revision, available on CD, LP, and Digital formats starting April 11 via TAO Forms.

Revision marks the first full-length collaboration between poet Fred Moten and bassist Brandon Lopez, an electric, boundary-pushing record that merges the power of avant-garde jazz with critical theory and the art of spoken word. Featuring improvisation and thought-provoking poetry, Revision promises to be an essential album for fans of experimental music and political discourse.

The album's debut single, "#2", has already captured attention for its breathless complexity and deep engagement with uncomfortable truths. As Pitchfork describes it, Revision is a “conceptually rich, politically weighty album that asks timeless questions without overexplaining.” The Quietus notes its shared processing of the "ongoing present" and "all our places within it,” while Aquarium Drunkard praises it as “an essential listen, incandescent with rage.”

With Revision, Moten and Lopez bring their unique voices together in a way that is both intellectually stirring and sonically captivating. This is their first high-fidelity studio record, and it's a raw, electric journey through sound, theory, and emotion. The duo’s improvisational interplay, combined with Moten’s poetic mastery, challenges listeners while remaining accessible—an invitation to dive into its oceanic depths.

Brandon Lopez, an acclaimed bassist whose collaborative work with Fred Moten and Gerald Cleaver earned critical praise, is an essential force behind the album's richness. His improvisational style has garnered respect in the jazz world, and this collaboration showcases the maturity and power of his playing.

This is more than just a record; it’s a statement. The absence of a typical “album description” is a deliberate choice, putting the focus squarely on the music itself. It’s electric, funny, furious, and deeply rich—a listening experience that unfolds with each play.

Revision is now available for pre-order and will be released April 11. Don’t miss out on the chance to experience this groundbreaking work in its entirety.

Praise for Moten/Lopez/Cleaver:

  • Pitchfork: "A conceptually rich, politically weighty album that asks timeless questions without overexplaining... breathlessly complex."
  • The Quietus: "A shared processing of an uncomfortable reality, of the ongoing present, and all our places within it."
  • Aquarium Drunkard: "An essential listen, incandescent with rage."

Jo-Yu Chen's New Jazz Album 'Rendezvous: Jazz Meets Beethoven, Tchaikovsky & More' Merges Classical and Jazz Traditions

Taiwanese-born pianist Jo-Yu Chen has spent years at the crossroads of classical music and jazz, expertly blending the two genres in a way few others have. After years of studying classical piano and oboe in Taiwan, Chen moved to New York to study at Juilliard, where she initially planned to follow the classical music path. But fate had other plans, and it wasn’t long before she found herself drawn to the world of jazz. Influenced by pioneers such as Jason Moran, Sam Yahel, and Kevin Hays, she soon became an important voice in contemporary jazz.

Her jazz journey has been nothing short of spectacular. Chen released several highly acclaimed albums, including Obsession (2009) with drummer Tyshawn Sorey, Stranger (2014) with guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, and Savage Beauty (2019) with saxophonist Mark Turner—each recording released on Sony Music, making her the first and only Taiwanese jazz artist signed to a major label.

During the pandemic, Chen returned to Taiwan, reconnecting with classical musicians and discovering new ways to integrate her classical training with her jazz passion. This integration came to life in her highly anticipated album, Rendezvous: Jazz Meets Beethoven, Tchaikovsky & More, set to release on May 2, 2025.

'Rendezvous': A Fusion of Classical and Jazz

Rendezvous features an imaginative blend of classical and jazz elements, featuring reimagined works by five iconic composers, including Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, and Prokofiev. The album explores the synergy between these two worlds, with a jazz trio featuring bassist Chris Tordini and drummer Tommy Crane accompanying Chen.

Among the standout pieces are Chen’s mash-up of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 and the Moonlight Sonata, which builds in intensity, as well as her emotionally charged solo rendition of Beethoven's Sonata No. 8: Pathétique. In the classical realm, the album also delves into Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and The Nutcracker Suite, offering a fresh jazz perspective on these beloved works.

Chen resists the term "crossover" when describing her music, explaining that integrating classical and jazz feels natural to her after years spent immersing herself in both worlds. “I felt it was about time to integrate them,” Chen says. The result is a work that bridges centuries of music and creates something new, fresh, and deeply personal.

Teaser Tracks Available Now

Two tracks from Rendezvous are already available for streaming: The Nutcracker Suite: Dance of the Reed Flutes and Swan Lake. These early releases showcase Chen’s creative approach to transforming classical pieces into jazz explorations, hinting at the beauty and complexity of the full album.

A Journey of Innovation

Chen’s musical journey is one of constant reinvention. In 2023, she earned a nomination for Best Instrumental Composer at Taiwan’s Golden Melody Awards for her original piece Walking Through Fear. The track combined bold piano improvisation and striking string quartet writing. Following that success, her 2024 EP Schubert & Mozart: ‘Round Midnight brought her into conversation with two of classical music's greatest composers, Schubert and Mozart, through the lens of jazz.

Rendezvous is a testament to Chen’s ability to blend innovation with tradition, challenging musical boundaries while honoring the rich legacies of classical and jazz. The album is set to be a groundbreaking release for fans of both genres.

Tracklist:

  1. Beethoven – Symphony No. 5 / Moonlight Sonata
  2. Tchaikovsky – The Nutcracker: Dance of the Reed Flutes
  3. Beethoven – Sonata No. 8, Pathétique 2nd Movement

Black Violin Drops New Single "Smoke" Ahead of Full Circle Album Release – A Groundbreaking Fusion of Classical and Hip-Hop

GRAMMY-nominated duo Black Violin has released their new single "Smoke" alongside its official music video, offering a fresh taste of their upcoming album Full Circle, set to drop later this spring. Produced by Phil Beaudreau (Dr. Dre, Justin Bieber, The Game, Lalah Hathaway), "Smoke" continues Black Violin’s bold fusion of classical instrumentation and hip-hop rhythms.

"Nothing has ever been recorded like this song," says Black Violin's Kev Marcus, who describes the track as a milestone in musical innovation. The song features a distinctive viola solo that, according to Marcus, has never been heard before. "It's what the viola has always wanted, since the days of Bach, to be able to shine in a melodic, super-soulful way, and no one else in the world could make that song but us."

Black Violin’s Musical Journey and Unique Sound Black Violin is made up of classically trained musicians Wil Baptiste and Kev Marcus, who met on the first day of orchestra class at Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 1996. Baptiste, initially wanting to play the saxophone, was persuaded by his orchestra teacher to join the class after a playful bet with the band instructor. From then on, their passion for classical music and hip-hop collided, forming the foundation of their unique sound.

After moving in together post-college, Baptiste and Marcus began experimenting with covers of popular hip-hop songs played on their violins. This sparked their rise to fame, especially after their winning appearance on Showtime at the Apollo. Black Violin’s growing success led them to collaborate with renowned artists like Alicia Keys, Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park, Wu-Tang Clan, Alessia Cara, Lil Wayne, and many others.

Albums, Tours, and Recognition
Black Violin has released several critically acclaimed albums, including Stereotypes (2016) and Take the Stairs (2019), the latter of which was nominated for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album at the 2020 GRAMMYs. Their boundary-pushing musical style, blending classical violin with elements of hip-hop and R&B, has gained them a devoted following and widespread recognition.

Notably, Black Violin performed two sold-out shows at the Kennedy Center with the National Symphony Orchestra, marking the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s death, and appeared on major national platforms such as CBS Mornings, PBS NewsHour, and The Today Show.

Empowering Communities and Youth Education Beyond their musical success, Black Violin has remained committed to empowering youth through music education. They engage with over 100,000 students annually, providing free performances and mentorship in schools, particularly in low-income and Title 1 areas. The duo founded the Black Violin Foundation in 2019, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing access to quality music programs, fostering creativity, and encouraging innovation among young people.

Black Violin Full Circle Tour - 2025 In celebration of their upcoming album Full Circle, Black Violin will be hitting the road for a nationwide tour this spring. “Mister Smooth” is Dee Brown's sixth album and showcases his ability to create melody-rich, soulful tracks. Throughout the album, Brown teams up with GRAMMY®-nominated producer Valdez Brantley (known for his work with Usher, Mary J. Blige, and Keith Sweat) to write eight original songs. Together, they craft an album that conveys empowerment, strength, and self-assurance in the face of challenges.

“Mister Smooth is someone who always stays on top of things, exudes confidence, and handles any situation with control,” explains Brown. “I wanted to create music that reflects that mindset, something relatable and aspirational. The name itself resonates with so many people, and I think the music brings that feeling to life.”

Mister Smooth Tracklist:

The album opens with the title track “Mister Smooth,” setting the tone with its laid-back, yet confident groove. Dee Brown then takes us on a musical journey through several genres and moods. Highlights from the album include:

  • “Finesse” – A song that went through a process of evolution, now featuring two distinct melodies played on big-body guitar and Stratocaster-style guitar.
  • “You Already Know” – A deep cut and the album's first single, showcasing Brown's slick guitar over a midtempo groove.
  • “Charismatic” – Featuring Merlon Devine’s soprano sax, this track adds a smooth, soulful touch to the album.
  • “4th Dimension” – A blend of rock and jazz elements, showcasing Brown’s rock ‘n’ roll influences with distorted guitar and funky grooves.

Bobby Broom Joins Chicago Jazz Orchestra for "More Amor: A Tribute to Wes Montgomery" – Release Date and Tour Announced

Acclaimed guitarist Bobby Broom is set to shine as the featured soloist on the upcoming recording More Amor: A Tribute to Wes Montgomery, which will be released on March 28, 2025, under the Chicago Jazz Orchestra Records label. This exciting project, born from a collaboration between Broom and CJO musical director Jeff Lindberg, revisits a vision first sparked back in 2004, when Broom performed a Montgomery retrospective concert with the Chicago Jazz Orchestra featuring big band and strings.

“I was thrilled when Jeff reached out to me to finally bring this recording to life,” says Broom. “Seeing this vision through has been a rewarding collaboration for both of us.”

The More Amor recording features fresh arrangements of both iconic and lesser-known Wes Montgomery compositions. Broom and Lindberg enlisted talented arrangers Alex Brown, Tom Garling, and Charley Harrison to reinterpret Montgomery’s works, such as “Four on Six”, “Somewhere”, and “What the World Needs Now Is Love”.

An important aspect of this project for Broom is the inclusion of his longtime trio—bassist Dennis Carroll and drummer Kobie Watkins—who form the core rhythm section for the album. “For me, this project is a dream,” says Broom. “Having the trio as part of this recording was essential. It provided a level of comfort and inspiration for me to create. I’ve always wanted to record in this setting, especially with strings, and to do so with such an incredible big band is beyond anything I imagined.”

Bobby Broom’s Upcoming Releases and Projects

In addition to his work with the Chicago Jazz Orchestra, Bobby Broom is busy in the studio with his trio, recording a project dedicated to his mentor, Sonny Rollins. Titled TYSR (Thank You Sonny Rollins), this album will reimagine Rollins’s iconic compositions from various stages of his illustrious career, including tracks like “Alfie’s Theme” and “Strode Road”, as well as some lesser-known gems like “Allison” and “Kim”.

Broom is also preparing for the release of his first solo guitar album, slated for spring 2026. In the meantime, fans can look forward to the remastered re-release of his 2001 trio album Stand!, which will be available on all major streaming platforms soon via Clean Sweep Music.

Bobby Broom’s Upcoming Performances

Bobby Broom continues to perform around the globe, with recent appearances including a successful three-night run at the Half Note Jazz Club in Athens, Greece, as well as performances at Berklee College of Music and City Winery Chicago.

Looking ahead, Broom will perform in a Benny Golson Tribute with the Ravinia Jazz Mentors on April 4 at Bennett Gordon Hall, Ravinia Festival Grounds in Highland Park, IL. As a Ravinia Jazz mentor for over 25 years, Broom has contributed to the development of numerous rising jazz stars. The Ravinia Jazz Scholar Program has helped shape the careers of talents such as Marquis Hill, Rajiv Halim, and Kyle Swan.

From April 10-13, Broom will perform with the Ben Paterson Organ Trio at the Jazz Showcase in Chicago. Ben Paterson is a member of the Bobby Broom Organi-Sation, which toured with Steely Dan in 2014.

This fall, Bobby Broom will perform with the Naples Philharmonic Jazz Orchestra at Daniels Pavilion, Philharmonic Center for the Arts in Naples, FL on October 15, 2025.

Finally, the much-anticipated More Amor: A Tribute to Wes Montgomery CD release concert will take place on March 16, 2025, at the Logan Center Performance Hall in Chicago. “This concert premiere will be an important event for Chicago’s jazz scene,” says Broom. “It will be a celebration of the excellence that went into the making of this remarkable recording.
