Adrian Galante to Release Debut Album Introducing Adrian Galante on April 25

Australian-born clarinetist Adrian Galante is set to captivate jazz audiences worldwide with his debut album, Introducing Adrian Galante (Zoho Music), releasing on April 25. The 28-year-old talent joins an exceptional Los Angeles-based quintet featuring pianist Tamir Hendelman, guitarist Larry Koonse, bassist Alex Frank, and drummer Joe LaBarbera, on a collection of eight timeless pieces from the Great American Songbook.

Despite the clarinet being a less commonly featured instrument in modern jazz, Galante has embraced its most influential voices and combined them with his own unique approach. Drawing inspiration from the jazz vocal tradition, Galante likens his intimate clarinet sound to how Bing Crosby revolutionized vocal delivery. "I remember hearing Tony Bennett talk about how Crosby’s closeness to the microphone created a more intimate sound," Galante explains. "I like to approach the clarinet in the same way."

This connection to vocal intimacy shines through in his music, where he masterfully navigates a wide emotional range. As music critic Will Friedwald points out in the album’s liner notes, “When most musicians play a song, they’re content to play only the music. Adrian, however, plays the whole song.”

Born in Perth, Western Australia, on October 24, 1996, Galante was raised in a classical music family, with a grandfather who was an opera singer. Though his parents loved pop music, it was jazz’s lively rhythms that caught his attention early on. At age seven, Galante was drawn to the clarinet and started lessons. By 15, he was already performing professionally.

Galante’s musical journey led him to the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts, where his studies eventually took him to New York University’s summer program. In 2022, he made the permanent move to New York, seeking to further his jazz career in the heart of the genre’s scene.

In August 2022, Galante performed with Tamir Hendelman in Seattle, leading to further collaboration. Hendelman recruited top Los Angeles musicians Larry Koonse, Alex Frank, and Joe LaBarbera to join Galante in recording his debut album, with Galante serving as producer.

The result is Introducing Adrian Galante, a stunning introduction to what promises to be a remarkable career for this young clarinetist. To celebrate the album release, Galante will perform at Birdland in New York City on Sunday, June 1, at 5:30 PM.

Carlos Santana Announces Upcoming Retrospective Album ‘Sentient’


Legendary guitarist and multi-Grammy Award winner Carlos Santana has unveiled his upcoming retrospective album, Sentient, set for release on March 28 via Candid Records. Available for pre-order now, the album’s soulful first single, a reimagined version of Smokey Robinson’s “Please Don’t Take Your Love,” is out today.

Sentient features 11 mesmerizing tracks, including three previously unreleased pieces, handpicked by Santana himself. The tracks, remastered and expertly sequenced, come together to reveal a fresh and compelling narrative. “I'm always driven by passion, emotion, and inner instinct,” Santana shares. “When I heard these songs around the house, I thought, ‘Let’s put them all together in one place.’”

The new version of the song features a unique guitar interpretation, blending takes to create something special. Santana reflects on the process: "I did my thing in the studio, and Smokey loved both versions, so we combined them. The version on Sentient is the first take."

Additionally, Santana will release a live instrumental cover of Michael Jackson's "Stranger In Moscow" on March 14, recorded with producer Narada Michael Walden’s band in 2007. Santana’s soulful, poetic guitar work shines throughout this unforgettable rendition, capturing the essence of Jackson's haunting ballad.

On March 17, the album’s track “Get On,” a jazz-groove masterpiece featuring Miles Davis and Paolo Rustichelli, will be released to radio for the first time, giving listeners a rare glimpse into this iconic collaboration.

Two of instrumental music’s most iconic figures, Bob James and Dave Koz, will be embarking on a U.S. tour this spring in support of their upcoming duet album, Just Us, set for release on March 7 via Just Koz Entertainment. The “Just Us” tour will feature an intimate performance of piano and saxophone, showcasing the raw, acoustic beauty of their collaboration. The tour kicks off in James’s hometown of Traverse City, MI, on March 13 at The Alluvion and will include a performance at Lincoln Center in New York City on March 20, wrapping up on April 1 at Seattle’s Jazz Alley. The album was recorded in Traverse City, MI, where James and Koz stripped away all the bells and whistles of a traditional studio setting, leaving only the purest form of music: just the piano and saxophone. Koz, known for his smooth saxophone stylings and mastery of contemporary jazz, shared his enthusiasm about the project: “Recording this album with Bob James was one of the greatest life (and music) experiences for me – I learned so much from this treasure of a man. Greg Manning Launches EQuity Records to Spotlight Unsung Sidemen, Starting with Patches Stewart’s "Soul Serenade"


After ten years of touring the globe as a keyboardist for GRAMMY® winners, nominees, and Billboard chart-toppers, Greg Manning made the bold transition from sideman to solo artist and producer. Having crafted over a dozen Billboard No. 1 hits and contributed to two GRAMMY-nominated albums, Manning has now turned his focus to empowering fellow sidemen and sidewomen with his new indie label, EQuity Records. Launched on Valentine’s Day, the label’s debut single is trumpeter Patches Stewart’s “Soul Serenade,” which Manning co-wrote and produced. The jazzy, midtempo instrumental groove debuted as the No. 1 most added new single on the Smooth Jazz Network chart.

EQuity Records is Manning’s way of giving long-time sidemen like Stewart, who has played with legends like Quincy Jones and Al Jarreau, the opportunity to shine as solo artists. "On View At The Five Spot Café" – The Complete 1959 Kenny Burrell Masters


Announcing the April 11 release of On View At The Five Spot Café: The Complete Masters, a special Tone Poet Vinyl Edition of guitarist Kenny Burrell’s 1959 hard bop summit with drummer Art Blakey. The expanded 3-LP, 2-CD & digital sets present the complete recorded performances for the first time in any format including 6 previously unissued tracks.

Burrell had already achieved rising star status with several stellar Blue Note albums to his name when he entered the storied NYC jazz club The Five Spot Café on August 25, 1959, for his first live recording date as a leader. The band Burrell assembled for the gig was stacked with top talent: Blakey on drums, Tina Brooks on tenor saxophone, Roland Hanna & Bobby Timmons on piano & Ben Tucker on bass. The mood was relaxed & soulful, but the music was red hot & the grooves were deep on that steamy summer evening of hard bop bliss.

Kenny Burrell is an influential American jazz guitarist, composer, and educator, widely recognized for his smooth, melodic playing and his mastery of a variety of jazz styles. Born on July 31, 1931, in Detroit, Michigan, Burrell grew up in a musically rich environment and was exposed to jazz at an early age. He began his formal study of music at the University of Detroit and later continued his education at the Manhattan School of Music.

Burrell’s career took off in the 1950s, where he became known for his unique blend of swing, bebop, blues, and Latin influences. He played with a number of jazz greats, including Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Jimmy Smith, and was a prominent figure in the jazz world. His 1956 album Kenny Burrell and John Coltrane is a landmark collaboration that showcases his ability to blend effortlessly with other musicians while maintaining his distinct sound.

As a recording artist, Burrell is known for a large body of work, with his guitar style being smooth yet expressive, often rich with soulful bluesy licks. His tone is warm and rich, and his improvisational ability is noted for its sophistication and subtlety. Burrell has released a number of albums as a bandleader, including Midnight Blue (1963), which is considered one of his signature albums.

In addition to his performance career, Burrell is also a respected educator. Rev has earned a reputation as both a singularly compelling performer and a persuasive evangelist for the rootsy, country blues styles that captured his imagination early in life and inspired him and his band to make pilgrimages to Clarksdale, Mississippi, to study under such blues masters as T-Model Ford, Robert Belfour, and David "Honeyboy" Edwards. Reverend Peyton is accompanied by his wife, the washboard virtuoso, Washboard Breezy Peyton, and kept on time by the deep rhythms of Jacob "The Snakob" Powell. 

The new record, Honeysuckle, was produced and recorded by Reverend Peyton and mixed by six-time Grammy winner Vance Powell (Chris Stapleton, Jack White). The record features many special guests, including gospel music group The McCrary Sisters on the song "Manger," Blues Music Hall of Famer and Grammy-nominated harmonica player Billy Branch who plays on the Blind Lemon Jefferson song "Nell (Prison Cell Blues)," Grammy award-winning and IBMA's 10-time Fiddle Player of the Year Michael Cleveland plays on "Freeborn Man" and Colton Crawford from The Dead South plays banjo on "The Good Die Young." The album artwork features classic wet plate photography by Bill Steber, the legendary photographer who has documented blues culture in Mississippi for the last 30 years.

"This record is a bit of a return to my roots, a very personal mix of old and new songs that shaped me or that I'm currently shaping. It's the most acoustic record we've made in years, using all vintage equipment: microphones, guitars, and recording gear, and a lot of me and my National guitar. There is a smattering of Big Damn Band thrown into the mix to spice things up, and a short list of legends that I've always dreamed of collaborating with", said Reverend Peyton.

The first single/video, Honeysuckle, features Rev. Peyton solo acoustic on an old National Guitar. The video was shot in beautiful Brown County, IN by Tyler Zoller. The second single is “Looking For A Manger” and the video for this song will be released soon. Here is what Reverend Peyton had to say about the song, “I’m so honored to have my friends, The McCrary Sisters, singing on this song. They truly elevate it beyond what I had dreamed possible. When I was a kid, my Mom told me that sometimes strangers you encounter were angels in disguise. Inspired by that memory, and gospel songs like Blind Willie Johnson’s “Everybody Ought to Treat a Stranger Right,” I built the song up from a riff I had been working on. I had been doing walking bass lines on the low strings while keeping triplets on the high strings. I was so proud that the McCrary Sisters liked the song enough to be a part of it. They certainly sing like angels.”The Big Damn Band is going to be appearing on TalkShop Live Wednesday February 19 at 8PM ET. Arthur Thompson’s New Single “I’m Free” Inspires Self-Love and Empowerment Ahead of Debut Album Release


R&B/Jazz vocalist-drummer Arthur Thompson continues his commitment to spreading joy through music and to pay it forward with the release of his new single, “I’m Free.” Released on Valentine’s Day, the invigorating track that began collecting playlist adds on Monday (February 17) serves up an affirmational message of self-love and being unapologetically you. Thompson cowrote the song that he produced with two-time GRAMMY® winner Jon Gilutin. 

“I’m Free” in the fourth single from Thompson’s forthcoming debut album, “Arthurized Volume 1,” which is slated to arrive this summer. Each one of his singles – “Smile,” “We Can BEAT Cancer,” “Oasis,” and now “I’m Free” - has provided a positive, optimistic message with a purpose.

Written by Thompson, Fred Smith, and Jaconell Mouton, “I’m Free” is primarily a sunny instrumental groove riding a rhythm etched by Thompson’s drums and percussion and Kamaal Malak’s bass. Tenor saxophonist Tom Braxton dispenses lyrical leads amidst motivational melodies crafted by Gilutin’s piano and keyboards, David John’s guitar, and happy horn section parts played by the Monkey Fist Horns comprised of Rod Clark (trombone), Dave Johnson (trumpet), and Victor Anderson (saxophone). Thompson croons the choruses with glee in the company of backing vocalist Erin Stevenson.

“I had been going through some personal things that had me depressed and second guessing myself. Through meditation and prayer, I began to break through, and in doing that I was able to see myself, understand my worth and believe that all things are possible if you believe in yourself. ‘I’m Free’ is a self-awareness, feelgood song. It’s about learning to be happy with yourself, learning to walk in your own shoes, being unapologetic about who you are, and the things that you have overcome,” said Thompson, a Tulsa, Oklahoma native who is based in Nashville.

Last year, Thompson reimagined the uplifting “Oasis,” which was a number one hit for Roberta Flack. A single released to benefit and raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, “We Can BEAT Cancer” featured 9-time GRAMMY® nominated saxophonist Dave Koz and Stevenson. Thompson’s second single spent four months on the national chart. His 2023 debut single, “Smile,” featured saxophonist Mindi Abair with whom Thompson regularly tours. The success of the latter two singles led to Thompson being named Breakout Artist of the Year from BEATS Magazine.

Thompson is an in-demand drummer who tours and performs with contemporary jazz luminaries. He’s a mission-based musician who advocates for multiple causes, from mental health awareness to creating educational programs and nonprofit organizations – Where Are You Now, Music & Math; Build a Life, Save A Life Foundation; and Drums Speak - designed to serve children and at-risk youth.

While Thompson continues to assemble the material for “Arthurized Volume 1,” he hopes to empower listeners with the message in “I’m Free.”

Takuya Kuroda's EVERYDAY is a Masterful Blend of Modern Jazz, Hip-Hop, and Neo-Soul


Kobe-born, Brooklyn-based trumpeter Takuya Kuroda’s eight studio album, EVERYDAY is a stunning demonstration of his dedication and skill. Since the release of his soulful seventh album , 2022’s Midnight Crisp –– a record praised by PopMatters as a “future classic” –– Kuroda has not missed a beat. In his desire to achieve the “perfect blend of production and organic performance” the 45-year-old musician has continued to throw himself into his practice daily, nearly thirty years into his musical life. EVERYDAY builds on and dives ever deeper into the hip hop and neo-soul elements of his previous work. It is a triumph of genre-blending modern jazz. Kuroda’s playing is sure-footed and pure –– whether on the horn, synth, or Rhodes–– and he virtuosically dances among infectious rhythms of his own creation.

Kuroda’s twenty-one years in the United States have been fruitful. After studying composition at The New School, he began performing  with DJ Premier’s Badder Band, Jose James and Akoya Afrobeat, and has recorded as a sideman and bandleader for records on the likes of Blue Note and Concord. But as Kuroda himself says, “the only way to make the music that I want to make is to work hard, every day.” And so we have EVERYDAY, a title which reflects, as Kuroda puts it, “that simple message.”

There is a certain duality to the title that taps into something profound about this music. “Everyday” of course means both daily and commonplace. While Kuroda’s music is anything but average, there is something about the intrinsic and embedded nature of the day-to-day, the incidental rhythms of life, that is reflected and seductively expounded on here. Kuroda describes the process of recording Everyday like this: “Make tracks at home, bring them to the studio, add or replace sounds, invite musicians, repeat the process to polish the track –– as I hear it.” There is both a no-nonsense work ethic here and also a sort of embeddedness, an everydayness, that Kuroda achieves through this practice which perhaps cannot be accessed if one simply waits to get to the studio to begin work. Kuroda builds, tweaks, plays and polishes until what’s coming through the speakers matches what’s been playing in his head everyday. This is exactly what ensures Kuroda’s skillful synthesis of influences which Dean Van Nguyen noted while reviewing 2020’s Fly Moon Die Soon for Pitchfork. One is left with that sense that Kuroda has been tapping it all out everywhere he goes, drumming his fingers on the diner counter, shuffling his feet along the pathway in the park, manifesting the rhythms of his mind. “Groove,” Kuroda says, “is the foundation for all the tracks on EVERYDAY.”

And atop that strong foundation, brought to life by the energy of David Frazier’s drumming, Kuroda’s shimmering lyricism dances all over EVERYDAY. His trumpet playing pops and weaves and rings on the title track and his melodies are, as he puts it, “singable” –– profoundly so on the album closer, “Curiosity,” on which Kuroda trades trumpet for flugelhorn. Before that, “Bad Bye” is a glittering and classic sounding neo soul effort, featuring a stunning performance from vocalist FiJA. It’s as though Kuroda plucked this track from a dream of Mama’s Gun –– but, unmistakably, it’s Kuroda’s dream and so the song is Kuroda’s, entirely. Likewise with “Iron Giraffe,” in which Kuroda makes space for tenor saxophonist Craig Hill to weave a contemporary reverie of Night Music.

EVERYDAY is hyperaware of a panoply of old ideas and a pantheon of old gods but as Kuroda engages these tropes and personalities day in and day out, he turns it all around in a style that’s undeniably cool and personal. As Pitchfork put it, “Kuroda’s skill is not drawing influence from so many different forms, it’s radiating joy in doing so.” And as Kuroda puts it, “I’m still learning everyday and trying to express myself more clearly in the form of music that I love.” It’s this sterling dedication that makes Takuya Kuroda and EVERYDAY anything but commonplace.

Janiva Magness Announces New Single "Holes" and Tour Dates Ahead of Upcoming Album Back for Me


Janiva Magness is gearing up for the release of her new single "Holes" on February 14th, a collaboration with Grammy-nominated guitarist Sue Foley. Reflecting on the track, Janiva shared, “Careful y’all, this one might hurt… Owww! It’s that shock of finding out the hole we find ourselves in again… is the one we dug ourselves!” The single offers a punchy, groove-driven experience, with Foley's guitar work at the heart of the track’s bold energy.

"Holes" is the first taste of Magness' upcoming album Back for Me, which is set to drop on March 28, 2025 via Blue Élan Records. Produced by long-time collaborator Dave Darling, the album features a dynamic cast of musicians, including ace guitarists Joe Bonamassa, Sue Foley, and Jesse Dayton. Magness dives deep into a treasure trove of lesser-known songs from artists such as Bill Withers, Ray LaMontagne, and Allen Toussaint, capturing raw, emotional blues with a fresh spin. The album, she says, is a tribute to her love for the B-sides, “there’s a freshness to doing a B-side rather than a well-known hit.”

Janiva Magness has earned a distinguished reputation in the blues world, receiving seven Blues Music Awards, including the prestigious B.B. King Artist of the Year award in 2009. She was also nominated for a Grammy for her 2016 album Love Wins Again. Throughout her career, Janiva has demonstrated a rare combination of powerful vocal delivery and emotionally driven songwriting, which connects deeply with her audience. In 2019, she published her memoir, Weeds Like Us, which explores her traumatic childhood experiences—including the loss of both parents to suicide and her troubled years in the foster care system—alongside the hard-earned triumphs that shaped her career. Her resilience and authenticity have made her a beloved figure in the blues community, and she continues to evolve as an artist with each new project.

Gerardo Frisina Unveils 'Mindoro' - First Track from Upcoming Project 'In Sight' Vol. 1

 Italian Latin jazz maestro Gerardo Frisina is back with a brand-new project, sharing the first track, "Mindoro," from his upcoming double EP In Sight, set for release in 2025. The track, driven by a dynamic percussive groove and infectious energy, showcases Frisina's signature Latin soul with congas evoking the spirit of Giovanni Hidalgo. Cuban trumpeter Gendrickson "Pucci" Mena channels the vibrant style of Arturo Sandoval, while the incisive piano rhythm keeps the dance floor alive. Mindoro promises to be a captivating prelude to the full project.

Gerardo Frisina is an acclaimed Italian jazz musician, composer, and producer, widely recognized for his work that blends jazz with Latin, Afro-Cuban, and world music influences. Born in Italy, Frisina's music spans a wide range of genres, showcasing his deep passion for jazz, traditional rhythms, and electronic elements. He has established himself as a significant figure in the Italian jazz scene, particularly for his innovative fusion of jazz with the vibrant sounds of Latin America.

Frisina’s musical journey began at an early age, and his interest in jazz grew during his studies at the conservatory. Over the years, he developed a distinctive style marked by his ability to integrate various musical traditions into his jazz compositions, creating a sound that resonates globally. His early works, notably his album “Gerardo Frisina” (1997), gained attention for its combination of jazz improvisation with rhythmic Latin elements, capturing the essence of both genres.

As a composer, Frisina’s versatility is evident in his diverse discography, which includes albums such as "Essenza" (2004) and "Ginseng Roots" (2014). Through his label, Schema Records, he has been instrumental in bringing innovative sounds to the forefront of the jazz and electronic music scenes.

Rodney Jordan Pays Tribute to Memphis with "Memphis Blue," Coming March 14th


Rodney Jordan, born and raised in Memphis, the “Home of the Blues,” channels his city’s heritage on Memphis Blue, a deeply personal tribute to the soulful people of Memphis, set for release March 14th via Baxter Music Enterprises. Now residing in Tallahassee, Florida, Jordan is joined by fellow Memphian trumpeter Melvin Jones, along with top-tier collaborators: Louis Heriveaux on piano (Atlanta), Mark Sterbank on saxophone (Charleston), and Quentin E. Baxter on drums (Charleston).

The album includes original compositions by Jordan and Jones, as well as classic standards by Gigi Gryce, Johnny Mercer, and Mulgrew Miller. It captures the flavor and essence of the blues in a fresh and powerful way.

“Memphis Blue isn’t your typical blues album, but if you listen carefully, you’ll find the blues thread woven through every track,” says Jordan. “The optimism we bring to the music embodies the spirit of the blues.”

Jordan’s original compositions offer deep, emotional reflections: Melvin Jones’s “The Storm Will Pass” carries a hopeful mood, while Jordan’s own “Escapatoria” evokes sweetness and yearning. His track “The Art of Blakey” is a soulful celebration. These pieces convey the raw power of the blues, enhanced by a haunting rendition of “Autumn Leaves” that transforms the standard with a Bessie Smith or Robert Johnson-style, deconstructive arrangement.

The album also includes Mulgrew Miller’s “Small Portion,” a composition that infuses Miller’s blues and soul influence, and Gigi Gryce’s “Minority,” which provides ample room for the musicians to express their unique takes on the song.

The essence of Memphis blues, rooted in community, honesty, and plainspoken messages, shines through in this album. Jordan reflects, “We play without pretense. It’s always about the group, and the chemistry between us is something special. This album is a salute to Memphis.”

Jordan’s musical journey began in Memphis, where he played bass in church, participated in the Memphis Youth Symphony, and studied under legendary educators Charles Harris and Emerson Able. He later honed his craft while studying at Jackson State University in Mississippi, where he also became assistant principal bassist for the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra.

Jordan’s diverse education—blending classical music with the experimental spirit of jazz—helped shape his distinctive sound. He later became an educator, leading the string program at Dougherty County (Georgia) Public Schools and playing bass with the Albany Symphony Orchestra. His jazz career blossomed as a freelance bassist in Atlanta.

In 2001, Jordan moved to Tallahassee to join Florida State University’s Jazz Studies program as Professor of Jazz Bass and Coordinator of Jazz and Commercial Music. He became a member of the Marcus Roberts Trio, performing with drummer Jason Marsalis for over 15 years. Jordan also tours regularly with vocalist Rene Marie.

A composer in his own right, Jordan’s most recent work includes The Medgar Evers Suite, a 2024 commission. His debut album, Playing Jazz, was released in 2017, and Memphis Blue marks his second project as a bandleader.

Ultrablue’s “New York Stories” EP: A Soulful, Jazz-Infused Tribute to the Big Apple, Out March 21


New York City, a global hub of commerce, finance, technology, academia, and the arts, teems with millions of people and endless stories. For keyboardist, composer, and producer John Smatla—who records under the name Ultrablue—the city serves as an infinite source of inspiration. Drawing from his own experiences, Smatla has created a six-song EP titled New York Stories, set to release on March 21 via SRS Records. The EP blends contemporary jazz, soulful R&B grooves, Latin rhythms, and vibrant pop sensibilities, offering a musical snapshot of the city’s electric energy.

This marks Ultrablue’s third collection and its first in nineteen years. The EP’s foundation was laid with “Until We’re All Free,” a single released years ago, followed by three others that set the stage for the new project. The fifth single, “The Girl with the Sunflower Tattoo,” will be released on Valentine’s Day, featuring poetic piano melodies and strong, dynamic rhythms. Smatla’s layered instrumentation creates intricate textures and harmonies, with New York City’s energy as a vivid backdrop for the stories within. His piano and keyboard work serve as a guide to his musical journey.

Opening the EP, “New York Story” offers a musical homage to Manhattan’s architecture and mystique, inspired by Smatla’s Cleveland roots. The horn-heavy track, featuring David Mann and the New York Voices, nods to the theme songs of 1960s detective shows composed by Henry Mancini, Quincy Jones, and Oliver Nelson, with a retro twist.

Smatla’s “Until We’re All Free” was written during the social justice protests of 2022, capturing the passion of the movement. He explains, “In the absence of traditional lyrics, the harmonies and melody lines needed to convey a sense of resolution and determination.” The track features wordless vocals from Philip Hamilton (Pat Metheny Group), brass from James Hodsonhast, bass from Hubert Eaves IV, and drummer Joel Rosenblatt (Spyro Gyra).

On “Herbie,” Smatla pays tribute to jazz legend Herbie Hancock and his roots in New York’s jazz scene. Hancock’s drummer Trevor Lawrence guests on the track, which also features bassist Cornelius Mims, The Chop Horns, and a soprano saxophone solo by Eric Knight. Smatla explains, “I created funky riffs that could’ve come from Hancock’s 1970s albums, mixing contemporary jazz with his signature bluesy piano licks.”

“Maria in Blue” features expressive acoustic guitar by Bernd Schoenhart and Smatla’s sensual piano, telling the story of a passionate love affair with a woman from his past. “She was a statuesque beauty, wearing a blue dress one warm evening. Our eyes locked, and it was the start of something unforgettable,” recalls Smatla.

“We Were in Love” explores the bittersweet theme of lost romance. With seven-time Grammy winner Randy Brecker on flugelhorn, Grammy-nominated guitarist Chieli Minucci, and Brazilian guitarist Romero Lubambo, Smatla’s impassioned piano leads a tune that shifts from brooding to hopeful, with celestial vocalizations from Darmon Meader (New York Voices).

The EP concludes with the downtempo “The Girl with the Sunflower Tattoo,” featuring Minucci’s electric guitar and Mann’s horns over a taut rhythm section. The track is inspired by a real woman from a tough neighborhood, whose rough exterior hid a vulnerable side symbolized by her single sunflower tattoo.

Ultrablue debuted in 2003 with Dusk 2 Dawn, featuring performances by notable NYC musicians like Dave Stryker, Rachel Z, and Kevin Mahogany. The follow-up album peaked at No. 4 on Amazon’s bestsellers list, with the hit song “Shiver” leading to a growing fan base. Smatla continues to evolve as Ultrablue, planning live performances this summer with a revolving cast of musicians.

Strata-East Records Partners with Mack Avenue Music Group for Exciting 2025 Reissues & New Releases


Last month, Mack Avenue Music Group announced its partnership with Strata-East Records, the influential jazz label known for artistic freedom and high production standards founded in 1970 by Charles Tolliver and Stanley Cowell.

(RTI) on 180-gram vinyl and mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio with audio transferred directly from the original analog tapes, the vinyl edition comes in high-quality, glossy tip-on gatefold jackets. It also includes new liner notes by Harmony Holiday and never-before-seen photos, making this release a must-have for jazz enthusiasts and collectors alike. 

On April 25, 2025, Strata-East will release vinyl and CD reissues of Charlie Rouse’s Two Is One, Charles Tolliver’s Music Inc.’s Live at Slugs’, Vol. I & II, and Stanley Cowell’s Musa: Ancestral Streams, also pressed at RTI on 180-gram vinyl and mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio with audio transferred directly from the original analog tapes. Pharoah Sanders’ Izipho Zam (My Gifts) will also be released on CD at this time and all 4 albums will be available digitally for the first time ever.

Pasquale Grasso: Honoring the Past, Defining the Future of Jazz Guitar


Pasquale Grasso is quickly establishing himself as one of the most remarkable jazz guitarists of his generation. Born in Ariano Irpino, Italy, Grasso honed his craft with early influences from jazz legends and soon found himself making a pilgrimage to New York City to further his studies under the tutelage of Barry Harris. Drawing from the rich traditions of the 1940s and '50s jazz scene, Grasso has cultivated a sound that blends technical virtuosity with heartfelt emotion, paying homage to icons like Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, and Bud Powell. With a career that spans work with Grammy-winning vocalist Samara Joy and acclaimed albums dedicated to jazz titans, Grasso’s playing has earned him high praise from jazz greats, including Pat Metheny, who called him “the best guitar player I’ve heard in maybe my life.”

Now, with the release of Fervency on February 7, 2025, Grasso continues his exploration of the jazz tradition, diving into lesser-known gems alongside beloved standards. Recorded in 2021, Fervency showcases Grasso’s mastery alongside bassist Ari Roland and drummer Keith Balla, with whom he has worked since moving to New York in 2009. The album spans from classic tracks like Miles Davis' "Milestones" and “Cherokee” to original compositions like "A Trip with C.C." and the emotional title track, “Fervency,” inspired by the powerful emotions captured in jazz ballads.

Grasso’s playing is often recognized for its connection to piano greats, as he skillfully translates their complexities into his guitar work. His deep ear for music allows him to replicate the sounds of legends, but he also brings his own unique voice to every note. George Porter Jr. Unveils Porter’s Pocket—A Funk-Fueled Instrumental Journey with the Runnin’ Pardners

Celebrated New Orleans bassist George Porter Jr. has dropped his highly anticipated new instrumental album, Porter’s Pocket, available today via Color Red. Known for his foundational work with the legendary funk band The Meters, Porter Jr., now 77, continues to push the boundaries of music with his longstanding quartet, the Runnin’ Pardners. The album features Porter’s longtime musical collaborator, keyboardist Michael Lemmler (Jubilation, TriFunctA), drummer Terrence Houston (The Funky Meters, Toubab Krewe), and the newest addition to the group, guitarist Chris Adkins (Raphael Saadiq, Mark Broussard).

Porter’s Pocket is a vibrant return to the funky instrumental roots that made Porter a household name in the 60s and 70s. Renowned for his signature bass lines on iconic tracks like “Cissy Strut” and “Hey Pocky A-Way” with The Meters, Porter has firmly cemented his place as one of the architects of funk music. On Porter’s Pocket, Porter and his bandmates revisit the raw, improvisational energy that originally defined his career. With eight instrumental tracks, the album returns to the free-flowing, groove-heavy funk that Porter pioneered with The Meters. The rhythm section, anchored by Porter and Houston, provides a powerful backbone for Adkins’ soulful guitar riffs and Lemmler’s colorful keyboard work.
