With the re-launch of Stax Records and the emergence of such soul artists as Leela James, Anthony Hamilton, Amy Winehouse, Angie Stone, Musiq Soulchild, Joss Stone and Marc Broussard, Jason’s “Soul Summit” is right on time. The label is a collection of many styles of soul. “Soul Summit,” has an all-star line-up that consists of Bob Babbitt (Funk Brothers, Marvin Gaye), Karl Denson (Lenny Kravitz), Richard Elliott (Tower of Power), Steve Ferrone (Average White Band), Mike Mattison, Maysa, Susan Tedeschi, Reggie Young (Ray Charles) and Dave Mann. Jason Miles’ credits include work with Miles Davis, Luther Vandross, Sting and Ivan Lins.
“Soul Summit,” was recorded live in a one-night performance at the 2007 Berks Jazz Festival in Reading, Pennsylvania. “I knew everybody,” Miles says about the support on this project. “Maysa was someone I really wanted to work with, she is an incredible singer.” For those pure soul lovers this album is a must to get. My favorites are “Shotgun,” “It’s Raining,” “Chicken and Waffles,” which has an excellent blend of flute and sax, and “James Brown Medley” with its James Brown signature sound.
