Dino Saluzzi at 90: El Viejo Caminante Brings Together Bandoneon, Family, and New Voices

Two guitars gently envelop the evocative bandoneon of Dino Saluzzi on El Viejo Caminante (The Old Wanderer), a recording that brings together generations and traditions. Here, the Argentinean father-and-son team of Dino and José María Saluzzi are joined by Norwegian guitarist Jacob Young, creating an album of musical depth and lyrical charm.

“It fills me with joy,” says Dino Saluzzi, who turned 90 in May, celebrating the sonic blend of José on classical guitar and Jacob alternating between Telecaster and acoustic steel-string. “Jacob and José are very good together. They have different sounds, different visions, but when it comes to the artistic output there is something beautiful happening.” Dino, whose artistry has always transcended borders, continues to seek new ideas and collaborations: “I always strive to make contact with new ideas outside my normal element, searching for potential for both musical and human growth.”

The association flowered after Jacob Young and José Saluzzi performed duo concerts in Argentina in 2022. Dino, present in the Buenos Aires audience, proposed a trio recording the following year. Honored to collaborate with the master bandoneonist, Young also contributed original compositions, including Dino Is Here,” a tribute that bends toward tango’s elastic rhythms and chamber-like atmospheres.

Dino revisits his own legacy with new interpretations of earlier works, including Tiempos de ausencias from his 1986 collaboration Volver with Enrico Rava, and Y amo a su hermano,” once performed with Charlie Mariano and Wolfgang Dauner. The title track, “El Viejo Caminante,” though evocative of Dino himself, is in fact a vintage piece—one of his vivid musical portraits performed here as a solo meditation.

The repertoire reaches beyond tango and Argentinean folk traditions into jazz standards such as Someday My Prince Will Come and My One and Only Love,” alongside Northern Sun,” a composition by Karin Krog. José Saluzzi adds La Ciudad de los Aires Buenos,” which functions like an overture, drawing listeners into the album’s sound-world, while Dino’s Buenos Aires 1950 conjures youthful memories of playing in the Orquesta de Radio El Mundo.

For Dino, the bandoneon remains an endless companion: “This instrument has been with me for years. Sometimes it makes me cry, sometimes it speaks to me, but it never finishes telling me everything.” In this recording, the voices of two guitars intertwine with the bandoneon, embellishing fragments of memory while opening new spaces for exploration.

Recorded at Saluzzi Music Studio in Buenos Aires in April 2023, El Viejo Caminante stands as both a reflection on a long and storied life in music and a forward-looking collaboration, uniting tradition and innovation with warmth, intimacy, and humanity.

Isaiah Collier & Tim Regis Announce Vinyl-Only Duo Release Live in the Listening Room

Critically acclaimed saxophonist, composer, and activist Isaiah Collier has teamed up with rising drummer Tim Regis for a bold new vinyl-only EP, Live in the Listening Room, in partnership with The Vinyl Factory. The limited edition release—strictly capped at 500 pressings—is available for pre-order now and will begin shipping on September 24, 2025.

The recording took place on January 30, 2025 inside Devon Turnbull’s (OJAS) Hi-Fi Listening Room Dream No.1 at 180 Studios in London. The session was fully improvised, capturing a one-time-only performance that merges Collier’s visionary saxophone approach with Regis’ explosive yet nuanced drumming.

The collaboration came to life through Collier’s producer and manager, Sonny Daze (Division 81 Records), who connected the musicians with Turnbull after a conversation about bespoke sound systems and sonic design. The three first met at Turnbull’s home in 2021, where a listening session revealed a mutual thread—Collier had performed on Kahil El’Zabar’s A Time for Healing, a record Turnbull admired deeply. That meeting sparked a series of performances in OJAS Listening Rooms across Brooklyn, San Francisco, Chelsea, and eventually London, culminating in this recording.

Live in the Listening Room spans three tracks across two sides. Side A opens with “Pacing (Devon’s Room)”, a fiery performance showcasing Collier’s commanding tone and Regis’ relentless drive, inspired by the duo’s urgency to dive straight into the unknown. Side B begins with 2nd Genesis, a textured journey that unfolds from Regis’ mysterious drum solo into Collier’s motifs and effects, escalating into a powerful yet unhurried climax. The album closes with “Den of Iniquity (Orange Satan) (Beelzebub)”, a hypnotic layering of sax loops, effects, and bullhorn, building into a fierce, unrestrained conclusion.

Collier describes the album as “a conversation between two kindred spirits in the multiverse of sound, where inspiration and discord push us into new directions.” Regis adds, “This album is a dialogue in rhythm and breath. Nothing was planned, yet everything was intentional.”

The performance was recorded direct-to-tape by Jamie Harley, with Daze applying live space echo reminiscent of classic recordings by Lee “Scratch” Perry and Curtis Mayfield. The result is an organic, unfiltered snapshot of creativity—both raw and expansive.

Collier and Regis first crossed paths in New York City in 2020, sharing regular practice sessions during the pandemic. Over time, Collier invited Regis to join his Chosen Few quartet, drawn to his unique drumming style. “He’s the only person I’ve seen use a double pedal in a way that works across duo, experimental, and straight-ahead settings,” Collier notes.

With Live in the Listening Room, the duo presents not only a document of improvisational brilliance, but also a rare artifact available exclusively on vinyl.

Raphaël Pannier Bridges Jazz and Sabar Traditions on Live in Saint Louis, Senegal with Master Drummer Khadim Niang,

French drummer-composer Raphaël Pannier and Senegalese master drummer Khadim Niang unite for a groundbreaking collaboration on Live in Saint Louis, Senegal, arriving November 7, 2025 on Miguel Zenón’s Miel Music. The historic live recording captures the first-ever fusion of modern jazz and Senegal’s deep-rooted sabar tradition, performed at the Saint Louis International Jazz Festival in May 2024.

Pannier’s quartet—featuring Cuban saxophonist Yosvany Terry, pianist Thomas Enhco, and bassist François Moutin—shared the stage with Niang and an eight-piece sabar ensemble in an unprecedented cultural exchange. The result: an electrifying set of original compositions, reimagined jazz standards, and deeply spiritual works that bridge continents, histories, and traditions.

The collaboration pays homage to sabar legend Doudou N’Diaye Rose, a UNESCO-recognized “living human treasure” whose artistry shaped generations of musicians and inspired Pannier from childhood. Niang, a former member of N’Diaye Rose’s ensemble, became Pannier’s partner in realizing a lifelong dream of merging jazz with sabar’s rhythmic and cultural language.

Tracks include original compositions like “Xalat Bou Set” (The Holy Spirit), “Hommage à Doudou N’Diaye Rose,” and “Sine Saloum,” alongside reimagined interpretations of Ornette Coleman’s “Lonely Woman”, John Coltrane’s “Naima”, and Dave Brubeck’s “Take Five.” The latter, at Niang’s request, introduced odd meter to his sabar ensemble—offering a joyful challenge to musicians whose rhythms are inherently tied to dance.

“This experience totally changed my vision,” says Pannier. “In Senegal, the border between life and art barely exists. Working with Khadim and the sabar tradition pushed me to see music in a more complete way.”

Live in Saint Louis, Senegal is both a landmark for cross-cultural collaboration and a vibrant new chapter in jazz’s global dialogue.

Mauricio Morales and Adam Hersh Announce Collaborative Album Between Dreams & Twilight,

Bassist Mauricio Morales and pianist Adam Hersh, two rising voices redefining the creative jazz scene in Los Angeles, join forces for their first collaborative album, Between Dreams & Twilight, releasing November 14, 2025.

The project showcases nine original compositions—three written by Morales, three by Hersh, and three co-written—balancing intricate modern jazz composition with heartfelt storytelling. Morales and Hersh are joined by an impressive ensemble featuring vibraphonist Warren Wolf, guitarist Mike Moreno, drummer Gary Novak, and the Los Angeles-based Rogue Lemon String Quartet.

The two musicians first connected in 2021 at a performance in downtown L.A. and quickly discovered a natural creative synergy. “The music was just flowing,” Morales recalls. “Our ideas complemented each other smoothly. It reached the point where we both knew we had to do something.”

The album’s concept reflects the balance of ambition and uncertainty in an artist’s journey. “Twilight symbolizes the uncertainty within our journey in this field—financial or emotional hardships that can bring you down if you don’t have the fortitude to keep going,” explains Morales. “The dreams are why you push forward…unpredictable and scary, but also exciting.” Hersh adds, “This project represents a bigger scale than either of us has done before. The space between dreams and twilight—it’s the emergence of our careers.”

Highlights include the Shorter-inspired “Low Life,” the string-led “Where the Olive Trees Wither,” the cosmic soundscape of “Cosmic River,” and the moving tribute “Retratos De Vida Interrumpida,” honoring Morales’ late uncle.

Between Dreams & Twilight signals the dawn of an exciting new partnership between two inventive musicians at the forefront of contemporary jazz.

Darryl Alexander Announces Inspiring New Contemporary Jazz Single “Rise Up” – Out September 26, 2025

Contemporary jazz artist Darryl Alexander will release his uplifting new single Rise Up on September 26, 2025, ahead of his forthcoming full-length album set for January 2026. The track follows the success of his recent single “Seen It Before,” which charted on the SmoothJazz.com Top 100 Streaming and Radar Charts (#38) and earned a spot on the RadioWave Groove Jazz “Most Added” Chart.

Expanding on the soulful foundation of “Seen It Before,” “Rise Up” introduces celebrated saxophonist Kenny Blake into Alexander’s ensemble, which also features Pete Tokar on acoustic piano and Rhodes, Wilbur Krebs on bass and rhythm guitar, and Alexander himself on drums, percussion, and keyboards. Together, they craft a richly textured soundscape blending groove, sophistication, and heartfelt emotion—aimed at resonating with both jazz radio and listeners worldwide.

“The song title can mean different things to different people, depending on where each of us are at in our daily lives,” shares Alexander. “For me, it’s a moment of reflection—that as we rise up to start a new day, we have the choice to speak words of encouragement, healing, and empowerment to ourselves and others, or words of destruction and harm. It’s also a reminder of the danger of apathy, of allowing things to take place that should not be occurring.”

Baltimore Jazz Collective Honors City’s Legacy With Powerful Self-Titled Debut Album

The Baltimore Jazz Collective, a powerhouse ensemble of top-tier artists, will release its self-titled debut album on September 12 via Stricker Street Records. Supported by the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University, the group brings together some of the most dynamic and respected voices in today’s jazz: trumpeter Sean Jones, bass clarinetist Todd Marcus, pianist Alex Brown, bassist Kris Funn, drummer Quincy Phillips, and singer, tap dancer, and interdisciplinary artist Brinae Ali.

Formed in 2019, the Collective is a celebration of Baltimore’s rich cultural legacy and creative spirit. Overflowing with swing, blues, and bold storytelling, the album features original works and striking arrangements from each member, painting vivid portraits of the city’s triumphs, struggles, and icons — from Eubie Blake and Baby Laurence to Gary Bartz and Baltimore Club pioneer Rod Lee.

“Musically, Baltimore is one of the most soulful cities, and you can’t really put the scene in a box,” says Jones, who also serves as the Richard and Elizabeth Case Chair of Jazz Studies at Peabody. “Musicians here perform at the highest level. It’s really a one-of-a-kind place.”

The music reflects that ethos. Phillips’ arrangement of Cyrus Chestnut’s “Minor Swing” opens the album with a gospel-soaked pocket, while his own “Intercession” feels like a lost Blue Note gem. Brown’s three-part “Red-Lined” channels the spiritual urgency of hard bop, exploring Baltimore’s history of redlining and its unfulfilled promise of public transit. Funn’s contributions, including “Watermelon” and an inventive jazz take on Rod Lee’s “Dance My Pain Away,” root the album in the lived experiences of West Baltimore.

Marcus honors his influences with “Link to Lateef” and a medley of Gary Bartz compositions, while Ali reimagines Sisqó’s “Thong Song” as a commentary on exploitation, alongside “For Baby,” her tap-infused tribute to legendary dancer Baby Laurence. Jones contributes a luminous arrangement of Eubie Blake’s “Memories of You” and his own “Fleeting Stillness,” highlighting the group’s depth and emotional range.

The Baltimore Jazz Collective is more than a band — it is a statement about community, artistry, and the role of music in reflecting and shaping city life. “Baltimore’s jazz scene has always been steeped in the blues, a groove, and a feeling,” says Funn. “Performances are interactive experiences, where the artist and the audience are equally essential.”

With this debut, the Collective not only honors Baltimore’s past but also asserts its place as a driving force in the present. As Ali sums it up: “Baltimore is one of America’s epicenters for creativity and culture — without a doubt.”

Baltimore Jazz Collective arrives September 12 on Stricker Street Records.

Brandon Sanders Makes a Lasting Impression With His Swinging Third Album Out November 7

Drummer Brandon Sanders has never taken the conventional path. Once a college basketball player at the University of Kansas and a DJ in Compton, Sanders didn’t even pick up a pair of drumsticks until the age of 25. While most musicians his age already had years of experience performing and recording, Sanders was just beginning his journey. Yet in the decades since, he has carved out an inspiring story of determination, discipline, and artistry that shines through every note he plays.

On November 7, 2025, Sanders will release his third album, Lasting Impression, via Savant/HighNote Records. The record follows his debut Compton’s Finest (2023) and sophomore effort The Tables Will Turn (2024), and cements his place as a drummer who makes music not to showcase chops but to connect deeply with listeners. “I always want to make music that sticks with people,” Sanders says. “I’m not trying to show off my technical abilities. I just want to tell the story of who I am as an artist and make good music from start to finish.”

Lasting Impression features an exceptional band designed to stay with the listener long after the final track fades. Vibraphonist Warren Wolf, who has played on all three of Sanders’ releases, returns once again, joined by saxophonist Stacy Dillard, pianist Eric Scott Reed, and bassist Eric Wheeler. The album also features Grammy-nominated vocalist Jazzmeia Horn, who lends her voice to two tracks, including a soulful rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “Until You Come Back to Me (That’s What I’m Gonna Do).” For the album’s closer, Sanders reconfigured the band into an intimate quartet, with Wolf alongside pianist Tyler Bullock and bassist Ameen Saleem, creating a reflective and personal finish.

Sanders’ unusual musical journey helps explain the spirit of resilience and groove that defines his work. Raised in a musical family, he grew up surrounded by instruments and stories of jazz greats who frequented his grandmother Ernestine Parker’s Kansas City nightclub, Casablanca. After moving to Compton with his mother as a toddler, he absorbed the neighborhood’s rhythms, first through beatboxing and DJing, before turning to the drums as a young man.

His path took him back to Kansas for college, where he balanced basketball with an emerging passion for jazz. Sanders studied jazz history with Dick Wright, who introduced him to the classic Blue Note and Prestige catalogs and encouraged his budding obsession with record collecting. After graduation, Sanders found himself drawn to the drums at his church and committed to the instrument with the same discipline he once gave basketball. Within two years, he had earned a place at Berklee College of Music, where he studied under Joe Lovano and Bill Pierce and played alongside peers like Christian Scott, Luques Curtis, and Warren Wolf.

At Berklee, his talent and drive became undeniable. Sanders quickly rose to performing in elite ensembles and began forging relationships with musicians who would later become his closest collaborators. After moving to New York in 2004, he led groups that included future stars Esperanza Spalding and Jon Batiste and balanced music with a parallel career as a social worker in the city’s schools, nurturing both students and his art.

Willie Jones III, one of Sanders’ mentors and a highly respected drummer, has produced all three of his albums. Sanders likens Jones’ influence to that of Dr. Dre or Quincy Jones, shaping and guiding projects with a masterful ear. “I may not be the next Tony Williams, but I know how to make the music feel good,” Sanders reflects. “I come from the party vibe, so I try to make sure that people are snapping their fingers and bobbing their heads. Even people that ordinarily don’t listen to jazz, they feel it.”

On Lasting Impression, Sanders achieves exactly that. From Bobby Hutcherson’s “8/4 Beat,” which opens the record as a showcase for Wolf, to Reed’s originals “Shadoboxing” and “No BS for B.S.,” to Sanders’ own buoyant title track and the poignant “Tales of Mississippi,” the album offers a balance of joy, reflection, and groove. Dillard’s take on Mal Waldron’s “Soul Eyes” dives deep into its longing and beauty, while Horn’s contributions add both intimacy and soul.

Though Sanders came to the drums later than most, his first decades were far from wasted. They gave him the discipline of athletics, the instincts of a DJ, the grounding of family history, and the perseverance of someone determined to catch up with—and hold his own among—the great drummers he admired. Now, more than ever, those qualities pour forth in his music, ensuring that Brandon Sanders continues to leave a lasting impression.

Lasting Impression was recorded on March 30, 2025, and will be released on November 7, 2025, via Savant/HighNote Records.

Don Was and The Pan-Detroit Ensemble Announce Debut Album Groove in the Face of Adversity

Six-time GRAMMY® Award winner, acclaimed producer, bassist, and current Blue Note Records President Don Was is stepping into a bold new chapter with his latest project: The Pan-Detroit Ensemble. The nine-piece soul jazz collective will release its debut LP, Groove in the Face of Adversity, on October 10 via Mack Avenue Records. Fans can pre-save and pre-order the album now, and the first taste of the project comes with the track Midnight Marauders, available to stream and share today.

Born and raised in Detroit, Don Was has spent five decades shaping the sound of contemporary music—working with The Rolling Stones, Bonnie Raitt, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, John Mayer, and countless others. But with Groove in the Face of Adversity, he comes full circle, reconnecting with the musical spirit of his hometown. “We’re the Pan-Detroit Ensemble and we are on a mission to promulgate the music of our hometown,” Was explains.

Blending steamy jazz, juke joint blues, and loose-limbed funk, the album channels Detroit’s rich musical heritage while showcasing Was’ lifelong philosophy of finding rhythm and peace through music. The title itself reflects a transformative moment in his youth: sitting impatiently in a car while his mother ran errands, he tuned into Joe Henderson’s Mode for Joe on the radio. “There was a nonverbal message that came through the music,” Was recalls. “‘Don, you got to groove in the face of adversity,’ meaning just relax, chill, and go with the flow.” It’s a mantra that continues to define his artistry.

In celebration of the release, Don Was and The Pan-Detroit Ensemble will embark on a fall tour, beginning October 8 in Traverse City, MI. The run will include stops in Louisville, Lansing, and more, culminating with a special Detroit performance on October 11—the official album release show. The group is also slated to appear at the immersive Golden Road Festival in Buford, GA. Select dates, including Traverse City and Evanston, will feature two performances nightly at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Adding to the excitement, the tour will not only showcase music from Groove in the Face of Adversity but will also include a full performance of The Grateful Dead’s 1975 classic Blues For Allah in honor of its 50th anniversary. Tickets for all announced shows are on sale now, with an extended tour planned for early 2026. Additional dates will be announced soon.

The announced October itinerary includes Traverse City, MI (October 8, two shows); Evanston, IL (October 9, two shows); Louisville, KY (October 10); Detroit, MI (October 11, album release show); Lansing, MI (October 12); and Buford, GA (October 13, Golden Road Festival).

Don Was’ reputation as one of the most influential producers of the modern era is unmatched. His body of work includes producing landmark albums across genres, with combined sales nearing 100 million records worldwide. His accolades include six GRAMMY® Awards, a BAFTA Award for Best Original Score (Backbeat), an Emmy Award for Music Direction (The Beatles: The Night That Changed America), and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Americana Music Association.

Beyond the studio, Was has led the Don Was Detroit All-Star Revue for more than 15 years, co-hosts The Don Was Motor City Playlist on Detroit’s WDET, and hosts Dinner with Don Was on SiriusXM. Since 2018, he has also toured extensively as a founding member of Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros with Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir.

The Pan-Detroit Ensemble unites some of the Motor City’s most accomplished musicians, each bringing their own deep-rooted jazz, funk, and soul influences. The lineup includes Jeff Canaday on drums, Vincent Chandler on trombone, Steffanie Christi’an on vocals, John Douglas on trumpet, Wayne Gerard on guitar, Mahindi Masai on percussion, Dave McMurray on saxophone, and Luis Resto on keyboards. Together with Don Was on bass, this powerhouse nine-piece ensemble embodies the collaborative and innovative spirit of Detroit’s vibrant music community.

With Groove in the Face of Adversity, Don Was doesn’t just add another milestone to his legendary career—he celebrates the resilience, rhythm, and creativity of Detroit. The album serves as both a personal statement and a communal expression of the city’s enduring musical heartbeat. The record arrives October 10 via Mack Avenue Records. Pre-save and pre-order are available now.

The musical legacy of Jimi Hendrix continues to expand in remarkable ways. On November 7, 2025, Experience Hendrix L.L.C. and Legacy Recordings will release Bold As Love – The Axis: Bold As Love Sessions, a monumental box set documenting Hendrix and The Experience’s groundbreaking second album. Produced by Janie Hendrix, Eddie Kramer, and John McDermott, this set will be available as either a 5LP + Blu-ray edition or a 4CD + Blu-ray edition.

This deluxe edition offers fans an immersive and comprehensive journey through Axis: Bold As Love, presenting:

  • The original stereo and mono mixes remastered from the historic 1967 masters.

  • A previously unreleased October 1967 studio demo of Stone Free/Up From The Skies is available now as a preview.

The cover art is especially poignant: a dragon drawing Jimi created at just five years old, lovingly preserved by his father, chosen by his sister Janie Hendrix to reflect the colors and power of “Bold As Love.”

By May 1967, Hendrix and The Experience had finished Are You Experienced at Olympic Studios in London. With their debut behind them and their American breakthrough at the Monterey Pop Festival that June, the band launched into recording its ambitious follow-up.

Returning to London in October 1967, producer Chas Chandler guided Hendrix, Mitch Mitchell, and Noel Redding through a creative surge at Olympic and Regent Studios. The result was Axis: Bold As Love, released in December 1967 in the UK and January 1968 in the U.S., containing some of Hendrix’s most enduring songs:

  • Little Wing” (covered endlessly worldwide)

  • “Castles Made of Sand” (a lyrical masterpiece)

  • “If 6 Was 9” (later featured in Easy Rider)

  • “Spanish Castle Magic” (a psychedelic powerhouse)

The sessions reveal Hendrix at a pivotal artistic crossroads, blending his raw firepower with more nuanced studio craft.

Janie Hendrix, CEO of Experience Hendrix, describes the project as both historic and emotional:

“Jimi was fearless in his artistic expression. Each song, each lyrical composition was and is an invitation for those listening to be free to feel. Bold As Love is the creative embodiment of those feelings. The Bold As Love set masterfully reintroduces the beauty of Jimi’s musical depth, highlighting a significant segment of not just his career, but his life.”

Walden—an Emmy and multiple GRAMMY® Award winner whose production credits include Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin, George Michael, and many others—calls the record his most diverse and ambitious effort yet. “Everything I do has heat,” he explains, “but this time I wanted people to feel a warm vibe from the beginning to the end. It recalls when I had the hit ‘Freeway of Love’ with Aretha Franklin, and you’d hear it everywhere in the summertime. This album takes you back to that spirit.”

The music travels across styles and eras, drawing on disco, R&B, funk, reggae, Afrobeat, Latin rhythms, rock, and jazz. Tracks like the fiery opener “I Love My People Now” set the tone with explosive vocals, searing guitars, and a gospel-infused choir. On “Dance Till Sunrise,” Walden channels Afrobeat and Caribbean vibes with contributions from Double O and saxophonist Eddie Minnifield, while “Jump Up” pairs him with rising 11-year-old rapper Ivan for a high-energy dance anthem.

The album’s centerpiece, “Still Yours For the Summer,” begins as a tender ballad before soaring into a rock-soul fusion featuring Walden’s longtime collaborator and Journey bandmate Neal Schon. Other highlights include a disco-charged reimagining of Sly Stone’s “Hot Fun in the Summertime,” the funky “Bougie Cherry Bomb,” and a fresh take on his own classic “I Shoulda Loved Ya 2025.” Walden also honors his early mentor John McLaughlin with the instrumental Mahavishnu and the reflective “I Dreamt of Mahavishnu.”

Production took place at Walden’s Tarpan Studios in San Rafael, CA, and Nicolosi Studio in Milan, Italy, with a stellar lineup of musicians including Vernon “Ice” Black, Ralphe Armstrong, Angeline Saris, and Justus Dobrin.

With Still Yours For the Summer, Narada Michael Walden once again proves why he is one of the most versatile and visionary artists of his generation. “People need to feel something positive—with electricity and God’s love,” he says. “You can party to this record, and you can mellow out to it. It takes you on a trip through the solar system and back again.”

Alexander IV Unveils “This Won’t Do” Featuring Cézanne – Debut Album Alchemist Coming 2026

Sonar Kollektiv has announced the release of This Won’t Do,” the new single from rising producer and multi-instrumentalist Alexander IV, arriving September 26, 2025. The track, which features the captivating vocals of Dutch artist Cézanne, is the first glimpse into Alexander IV’s highly anticipated debut album Alchemist, due in March 2026.

Alexander IV is the latest alias of eclectic Dutch musician Joris Feiertag. Widely known for his club-focused productions under the name Feiertag and as the drummer for Dutch funk trio Kraak & Smaak, he now turns toward a more soulful and cinematic direction. As Alexander IV, he explores hip-hop, soul, and jazz influences with a refined, nostalgic, and deeply personal touch.

“This Won’t Do” blends intricate detail with warmth, pairing a jazz-fueled breakbeat at 116 BPM with lush keys and subtle grooves. Cézanne’s soulful performance elevates the track, floating effortlessly above the rhythm and lending the single a heartfelt intimacy. The collaboration reunites the two Dutch artists after their earlier work together on “Burnin’” from the Bloom EP (Sidekick Music).

The upcoming album Alchemist takes this vision even further. Built from chopped, slowed, and reimagined sonic fragments, the project reflects Feiertag’s meticulous craftsmanship. Influenced by artists like Mr. Scruff, Thievery Corporation, The Herbaliser, Tosca, Kruder & Dorfmeister, SAULT, and Khruangbin, the album layers live instrumentation with modern production. Contributions from Bart Wirtz (flute, saxophone), Luuk Hof and Samir Saif (trumpet), and Robin de Zeeuw (double bass) enrich the sound, weaving jazz, funk, and soul into a seamless whole.

Guest vocalists including Cézanne, Oli Hannaford, and Pete Josef add further texture, shaping tracks that range from introspective soul to afrobeat-inspired grooves. As Alexander IV, Feiertag aims to alchemize these elements—organic and electronic, analog and digital, past and present—into something new and resonant.

With “This Won’t Do,” he opens the Alchemist chapter with understated elegance: a track that feels brand-new yet timeless, uncomplicated yet deeply crafted.
