Brandon Sanders Makes a Lasting Impression With His Swinging Third Album Out November 7

Drummer Brandon Sanders has never taken the conventional path. Once a college basketball player at the University of Kansas and a DJ in Compton, Sanders didn’t even pick up a pair of drumsticks until the age of 25. While most musicians his age already had years of experience performing and recording, Sanders was just beginning his journey. Yet in the decades since, he has carved out an inspiring story of determination, discipline, and artistry that shines through every note he plays.

On November 7, 2025, Sanders will release his third album, Lasting Impression, via Savant/HighNote Records. The record follows his debut Compton’s Finest (2023) and sophomore effort The Tables Will Turn (2024), and cements his place as a drummer who makes music not to showcase chops but to connect deeply with listeners. “I always want to make music that sticks with people,” Sanders says. “I’m not trying to show off my technical abilities. I just want to tell the story of who I am as an artist and make good music from start to finish.”

Lasting Impression features an exceptional band designed to stay with the listener long after the final track fades. Vibraphonist Warren Wolf, who has played on all three of Sanders’ releases, returns once again, joined by saxophonist Stacy Dillard, pianist Eric Scott Reed, and bassist Eric Wheeler. The album also features Grammy-nominated vocalist Jazzmeia Horn, who lends her voice to two tracks, including a soulful rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “Until You Come Back to Me (That’s What I’m Gonna Do).” For the album’s closer, Sanders reconfigured the band into an intimate quartet, with Wolf alongside pianist Tyler Bullock and bassist Ameen Saleem, creating a reflective and personal finish.

Sanders’ unusual musical journey helps explain the spirit of resilience and groove that defines his work. Raised in a musical family, he grew up surrounded by instruments and stories of jazz greats who frequented his grandmother Ernestine Parker’s Kansas City nightclub, Casablanca. After moving to Compton with his mother as a toddler, he absorbed the neighborhood’s rhythms, first through beatboxing and DJing, before turning to the drums as a young man.

His path took him back to Kansas for college, where he balanced basketball with an emerging passion for jazz. Sanders studied jazz history with Dick Wright, who introduced him to the classic Blue Note and Prestige catalogs and encouraged his budding obsession with record collecting. After graduation, Sanders found himself drawn to the drums at his church and committed to the instrument with the same discipline he once gave basketball. Within two years, he had earned a place at Berklee College of Music, where he studied under Joe Lovano and Bill Pierce and played alongside peers like Christian Scott, Luques Curtis, and Warren Wolf.

At Berklee, his talent and drive became undeniable. Sanders quickly rose to performing in elite ensembles and began forging relationships with musicians who would later become his closest collaborators. After moving to New York in 2004, he led groups that included future stars Esperanza Spalding and Jon Batiste and balanced music with a parallel career as a social worker in the city’s schools, nurturing both students and his art.

Willie Jones III, one of Sanders’ mentors and a highly respected drummer, has produced all three of his albums. Sanders likens Jones’ influence to that of Dr. Dre or Quincy Jones, shaping and guiding projects with a masterful ear. “I may not be the next Tony Williams, but I know how to make the music feel good,” Sanders reflects. “I come from the party vibe, so I try to make sure that people are snapping their fingers and bobbing their heads. Even people that ordinarily don’t listen to jazz, they feel it.”

On Lasting Impression, Sanders achieves exactly that. From Bobby Hutcherson’s “8/4 Beat,” which opens the record as a showcase for Wolf, to Reed’s originals “Shadoboxing” and “No BS for B.S.,” to Sanders’ own buoyant title track and the poignant “Tales of Mississippi,” the album offers a balance of joy, reflection, and groove. Dillard’s take on Mal Waldron’s “Soul Eyes” dives deep into its longing and beauty, while Horn’s contributions add both intimacy and soul.

Though Sanders came to the drums later than most, his first decades were far from wasted. They gave him the discipline of athletics, the instincts of a DJ, the grounding of family history, and the perseverance of someone determined to catch up with—and hold his own among—the great drummers he admired. Now, more than ever, those qualities pour forth in his music, ensuring that Brandon Sanders continues to leave a lasting impression.

Lasting Impression was recorded on March 30, 2025, and will be released on November 7, 2025, via Savant/HighNote Records.

Don Was and The Pan-Detroit Ensemble Announce Debut Album Groove in the Face of Adversity

Six-time GRAMMY® Award winner, acclaimed producer, bassist, and current Blue Note Records President Don Was is stepping into a bold new chapter with his latest project: The Pan-Detroit Ensemble. The nine-piece soul jazz collective will release its debut LP, Groove in the Face of Adversity, on October 10 via Mack Avenue Records. Fans can pre-save and pre-order the album now, and the first taste of the project comes with the track Midnight Marauders, available to stream and share today.

Born and raised in Detroit, Don Was has spent five decades shaping the sound of contemporary music—working with The Rolling Stones, Bonnie Raitt, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, John Mayer, and countless others. But with Groove in the Face of Adversity, he comes full circle, reconnecting with the musical spirit of his hometown. “We’re the Pan-Detroit Ensemble and we are on a mission to promulgate the music of our hometown,” Was explains.

Blending steamy jazz, juke joint blues, and loose-limbed funk, the album channels Detroit’s rich musical heritage while showcasing Was’ lifelong philosophy of finding rhythm and peace through music. The title itself reflects a transformative moment in his youth: sitting impatiently in a car while his mother ran errands, he tuned into Joe Henderson’s Mode for Joe on the radio. “There was a nonverbal message that came through the music,” Was recalls. “‘Don, you got to groove in the face of adversity,’ meaning just relax, chill, and go with the flow.” It’s a mantra that continues to define his artistry.

In celebration of the release, Don Was and The Pan-Detroit Ensemble will embark on a fall tour, beginning October 8 in Traverse City, MI. The run will include stops in Louisville, Lansing, and more, culminating with a special Detroit performance on October 11—the official album release show. The group is also slated to appear at the immersive Golden Road Festival in Buford, GA. Select dates, including Traverse City and Evanston, will feature two performances nightly at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Adding to the excitement, the tour will not only showcase music from Groove in the Face of Adversity but will also include a full performance of The Grateful Dead’s 1975 classic Blues For Allah in honor of its 50th anniversary. Tickets for all announced shows are on sale now, with an extended tour planned for early 2026. Additional dates will be announced soon.

The announced October itinerary includes Traverse City, MI (October 8, two shows); Evanston, IL (October 9, two shows); Louisville, KY (October 10); Detroit, MI (October 11, album release show); Lansing, MI (October 12); and Buford, GA (October 13, Golden Road Festival).

Don Was’ reputation as one of the most influential producers of the modern era is unmatched. His body of work includes producing landmark albums across genres, with combined sales nearing 100 million records worldwide. His accolades include six GRAMMY® Awards, a BAFTA Award for Best Original Score (Backbeat), an Emmy Award for Music Direction (The Beatles: The Night That Changed America), and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Americana Music Association.

Beyond the studio, Was has led the Don Was Detroit All-Star Revue for more than 15 years, co-hosts The Don Was Motor City Playlist on Detroit’s WDET, and hosts Dinner with Don Was on SiriusXM. Since 2018, he has also toured extensively as a founding member of Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros with Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir.

The Pan-Detroit Ensemble unites some of the Motor City’s most accomplished musicians, each bringing their own deep-rooted jazz, funk, and soul influences. The lineup includes Jeff Canaday on drums, Vincent Chandler on trombone, Steffanie Christi’an on vocals, John Douglas on trumpet, Wayne Gerard on guitar, Mahindi Masai on percussion, Dave McMurray on saxophone, and Luis Resto on keyboards. Together with Don Was on bass, this powerhouse nine-piece ensemble embodies the collaborative and innovative spirit of Detroit’s vibrant music community.

With Groove in the Face of Adversity, Don Was doesn’t just add another milestone to his legendary career—he celebrates the resilience, rhythm, and creativity of Detroit. The album serves as both a personal statement and a communal expression of the city’s enduring musical heartbeat. The record arrives October 10 via Mack Avenue Records. Pre-save and pre-order are available now.

The musical legacy of Jimi Hendrix continues to expand in remarkable ways. On November 7, 2025, Experience Hendrix L.L.C. and Legacy Recordings will release Bold As Love – The Axis: Bold As Love Sessions, a monumental box set documenting Hendrix and The Experience’s groundbreaking second album. Produced by Janie Hendrix, Eddie Kramer, and John McDermott, this set will be available as either a 5LP + Blu-ray edition or a 4CD + Blu-ray edition.

This deluxe edition offers fans an immersive and comprehensive journey through Axis: Bold As Love, presenting:

  • The original stereo and mono mixes remastered from the historic 1967 masters.

  • Brand new Dolby ATMOS mixes, created by Eddie Kramer and Chandler Harrod.

  • 40 bonus tracks of alternate versions, unreleased studio takes, demos, and live performances — 28 previously unreleased.

  • A previously unreleased October 1967 studio demo of Stone Free/Up From The Skies is available now as a preview.

The cover art is especially poignant: a dragon drawing Jimi created at just five years old, lovingly preserved by his father, chosen by his sister Janie Hendrix to reflect the colors and power of “Bold As Love.”

By May 1967, Hendrix and The Experience had finished Are You Experienced at Olympic Studios in London. With their debut behind them and their American breakthrough at the Monterey Pop Festival that June, the band launched into recording its ambitious follow-up.

Returning to London in October 1967, producer Chas Chandler guided Hendrix, Mitch Mitchell, and Noel Redding through a creative surge at Olympic and Regent Studios. The result was Axis: Bold As Love, released in December 1967 in the UK and January 1968 in the U.S., containing some of Hendrix’s most enduring songs:

  • Little Wing” (covered endlessly worldwide)

  • “Castles Made of Sand” (a lyrical masterpiece)

  • “If 6 Was 9” (later featured in Easy Rider)

  • “Spanish Castle Magic” (a psychedelic powerhouse)

The sessions reveal Hendrix at a pivotal artistic crossroads, blending his raw firepower with more nuanced studio craft.

Janie Hendrix, CEO of Experience Hendrix, describes the project as both historic and emotional:

“Jimi was fearless in his artistic expression. Each song, each lyrical composition was and is an invitation for those listening to be free to feel. Bold As Love is the creative embodiment of those feelings. The Bold As Love set masterfully reintroduces the beauty of Jimi’s musical depth, highlighting a significant segment of not just his career, but his life.”

Narada Michael Walden’s Still Yours For the Summer Celebrates Life, Love, and Music

Summer gets an encore in 2025 with the release of Still Yours For the Summer, the brand-new solo album from legendary musician, songwriter, and producer Narada Michael Walden. The 14-track project arrives as a radiant celebration of life, music, and spirit, offering listeners a soundtrack that fuses heat, joy, and timeless grooves.

Walden—an Emmy and multiple GRAMMY® Award winner whose production credits include Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin, George Michael, and many others—calls the record his most diverse and ambitious effort yet. “Everything I do has heat,” he explains, “but this time I wanted people to feel a warm vibe from the beginning to the end. It recalls when I had the hit ‘Freeway of Love’ with Aretha Franklin, and you’d hear it everywhere in the summertime. This album takes you back to that spirit.”

The music travels across styles and eras, drawing on disco, R&B, funk, reggae, Afrobeat, Latin rhythms, rock, and jazz. Tracks like the fiery opener “I Love My People Now” set the tone with explosive vocals, searing guitars, and a gospel-infused choir. On “Dance Till Sunrise,” Walden channels Afrobeat and Caribbean vibes with contributions from Double O and saxophonist Eddie Minnifield, while “Jump Up” pairs him with rising 11-year-old rapper Ivan for a high-energy dance anthem.

The album’s centerpiece, “Still Yours For the Summer,” begins as a tender ballad before soaring into a rock-soul fusion featuring Walden’s longtime collaborator and Journey bandmate Neal Schon. Other highlights include a disco-charged reimagining of Sly Stone’s “Hot Fun in the Summertime,” the funky “Bougie Cherry Bomb,” and a fresh take on his own classic “I Shoulda Loved Ya 2025.” Walden also honors his early mentor John McLaughlin with the instrumental Mahavishnu and the reflective “I Dreamt of Mahavishnu.”

Production took place at Walden’s Tarpan Studios in San Rafael, CA, and Nicolosi Studio in Milan, Italy, with a stellar lineup of musicians including Vernon “Ice” Black, Ralphe Armstrong, Angeline Saris, and Justus Dobrin.

Full Tracklist – Still Yours For the Summer

  1. I Love My People Now

  2. Hot Fun in the Summertime

  3. Dance Till Sunrise

  4. Keep Shining

  5. Still Yours For the Summer

  6. Bougie Cherry Bomb

  7. Jump Up

  8. Mahavishnu

  9. Aloha Aloha

  10. Last Night I Dreamed of Mahavishnu

  11. I Shoulda Loved Ya 2025

  12. Cowboy Disco

  13. Cool Bounce

  14. God’s Love is Gonna Take Us There

Beyond the studio, Walden continues to honor his musical heroes. On Saturday, September 13, 2025, he will perform at STAND! – A Celebration of Sly and the Family Stone, part of the Sound Summit festival at the Mountain Theater in Mount Tamalpais, CA. The tribute will feature Taj Mahal, Rustee Allen, members of Graham Central Station, and more, celebrating the legacy of Sly Stone while raising funds for Mount Tamalpais State Park.

With Still Yours For the Summer, Narada Michael Walden once again proves why he is one of the most versatile and visionary artists of his generation. “People need to feel something positive—with electricity and God’s love,” he says. “You can party to this record, and you can mellow out to it. It takes you on a trip through the solar system and back again.”

Alexander IV Unveils “This Won’t Do” Featuring Cézanne – Debut Album Alchemist Coming 2026

Sonar Kollektiv has announced the release of This Won’t Do,” the new single from rising producer and multi-instrumentalist Alexander IV, arriving September 26, 2025. The track, which features the captivating vocals of Dutch artist Cézanne, is the first glimpse into Alexander IV’s highly anticipated debut album Alchemist, due in March 2026.

Alexander IV is the latest alias of eclectic Dutch musician Joris Feiertag. Widely known for his club-focused productions under the name Feiertag and as the drummer for Dutch funk trio Kraak & Smaak, he now turns toward a more soulful and cinematic direction. As Alexander IV, he explores hip-hop, soul, and jazz influences with a refined, nostalgic, and deeply personal touch.

“This Won’t Do” blends intricate detail with warmth, pairing a jazz-fueled breakbeat at 116 BPM with lush keys and subtle grooves. Cézanne’s soulful performance elevates the track, floating effortlessly above the rhythm and lending the single a heartfelt intimacy. The collaboration reunites the two Dutch artists after their earlier work together on “Burnin’” from the Bloom EP (Sidekick Music).

The upcoming album Alchemist takes this vision even further. Built from chopped, slowed, and reimagined sonic fragments, the project reflects Feiertag’s meticulous craftsmanship. Influenced by artists like Mr. Scruff, Thievery Corporation, The Herbaliser, Tosca, Kruder & Dorfmeister, SAULT, and Khruangbin, the album layers live instrumentation with modern production. Contributions from Bart Wirtz (flute, saxophone), Luuk Hof and Samir Saif (trumpet), and Robin de Zeeuw (double bass) enrich the sound, weaving jazz, funk, and soul into a seamless whole.

Guest vocalists including Cézanne, Oli Hannaford, and Pete Josef add further texture, shaping tracks that range from introspective soul to afrobeat-inspired grooves. As Alexander IV, Feiertag aims to alchemize these elements—organic and electronic, analog and digital, past and present—into something new and resonant.

With “This Won’t Do,” he opens the Alchemist chapter with understated elegance: a track that feels brand-new yet timeless, uncomplicated yet deeply crafted.

Brian Sumner Announces New Album FOR WHAT? – A Bold Exploration in Jazz Guitar Improvisation

Sumner returns this week with his latest solo release, FOR WHAT?, streaming everywhere on Friday, September 12, 2025. The new album follows the success of his acclaimed 2024 project Blur, pushing further into uncharted territory for electric guitar improvisation.

Where Blur was expansive and exploratory, FOR WHAT? feels more sombre and reflective. Drawing inspiration from unsettling topics such as disease and simulation theory, Sumner once again demonstrates how the guitar can serve as a powerful vehicle for both musical experimentation and emotional resonance.

The album is largely drawn from his popular improvised performances originally shared on Instagram and TikTok. With over 280,000 streams on Spotify across his recent releases, Sumner has emerged as one of the most listened-to free improvisors worldwide. His style is marked by unconventional but coherent harmonic structures, unexpected rhythmic ideas, and a fearless commitment to pushing the boundaries of jazz guitar.

A key part of FOR WHAT? is the reunion with artist Juan Ballesteros, also known as the red dot artist, who provided cover art for Sumner’s 2024 album Tired in the Final Sense. Ballesteros’ work, with its distinctive, abstract character, mirrors the music’s adventurous spirit.

Sumner’s prolific output has seen him release seven solo-improvised guitar records in just two years. Alongside his viral performances on social media, he’s built a global following with over 10,000 monthly Spotify listeners and thousands of engaged fans across Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X, and Threads.

His unique voice as an improvisor is rooted in diverse training: classical guitar studies at Kwantlen College, contemporary guitar at VCC, and jazz guitar at Capilano College. These foundations, combined with two decades of recording and touring with his art-grunge outfit The Sumner Brothers, have given him the tools to improvise freely, unbound by any single genre.

With FOR WHAT?, Sumner offers a bold new statement on what jazz guitar is and what it can become—both deeply personal and profoundly innovative.

Westbound Train Announce New Album Sing the Ghost Away

cclaimed Boston ska and soul collective Westbound Train have announced their long-awaited new album Sing the Ghost Away, set for release on November 7, 2025 via ORG Music. The LP marks the group’s most dynamic and resonant work to date—an evolution that reaffirms their status as torchbearers of modern ska, rocksteady, and classic soul.

Produced by frontman Obi Fernandez (vocals, trombone) and drummer Eric Novod, and mixed/mastered by Tim Panella, the album was recorded at The Relic Room in New York City. The sessions blend warm analog textures with inventive arrangements, creating an emotionally charged record that feels both timeless and refreshingly contemporary.

Sing the Ghost Away has hands down been my favorite record to put together in the history of this band,” says Fernandez. “From picking the songs, to dreaming up the artwork, to bringing in friends we love and respect—it all came together to create something that feels true to us. This album is our way of blending the sounds we hold close—Jamaican music, American rock ’n’ roll, and R&B. We love everything from Wilco to the Wailers, and you’ll hear that in the mix.

The first single, “L.M.A.”, is streaming now and highlights the band’s sharpened songwriting and expanded sonic palette. According to Fernandez, “‘L.M.A.’ is a tune about self-worth. On the surface it leans into a relationship story, but really it’s bigger than that. We all face moments of disappointment and this song is a reminder that in those moments, the move is to self start, choose yourself—to love yourself first. We can’t wait around for validation to come to motivate us.

The album features standout tracks such as “Keeper From the Start,” “Slippery Slope,” and a new version of “We All Need Rescue” (originally from their 2022 release). Guest musicians including Anthony Abbinanti (percussion), horn players Jon Degen and Luke Panella, and arranger Mike Sarason add depth and richness to the band’s signature sound.

Formats available include limited edition Blood Orange” color vinyl (500 copies), signed test pressings (20 copies), CD, digital download/streaming, and a bonus “L.M.A. (Dub Remix)” lathe cut (50 copies).

Formed in 2001 at Berklee College of Music, Westbound Train quickly rose to prominence in the U.S. ska circuit with their infectious mix of ska, rocksteady, and soul. Drawing influence from The Skatalites, Hepcat, Otis Redding, and The Slackers, they’ve toured internationally and appeared at major festivals including Vans Warped Tour, Summer of Ska, and Rude Cat Festival.

The current lineup features Obi Fernandez (vocals, trombone), Rich Graiko (trumpet), Carlos Menezes Jr. (saxophone), Gideon Blumenthal (keyboards), Alex Brumel (guitar), Alex Stern (guitar), Thad Merritt (bass), and Eric Novod (drums). Beyond their music, the members are also educators, entrepreneurs, and family men, yet remain deeply committed to their shared mission: carrying forward a soulful, modern vision of ska and reggae.

To celebrate the upcoming release, Westbound Train will perform a series of live shows this fall while supporting Big D and the Kids Table. Dates include October 24 in Philadelphia at Warehouse on Watts, October 25 in New York at The Sultan Room, and October 26 in Cambridge at The Sinclair. These performances will give fans an early taste of the new songs alongside the band’s beloved catalog.

With Sing the Ghost Away, Westbound Train continue to prove why they’re one of the most important bands in today’s ska and soul revival: rooted in tradition, yet always pushing forward.

Tom Cohen’s Embraceable Brazil: A Lifelong Bossa Nova Dream Realized

Drummer Tom Cohen’s lifelong love affair with bossa nova reaches its fullest expression with the October 10, 2025 release of Embraceable Brazil on Versa Records. More than a decade in the making, the album is Cohen’s sixth as a leader, and it unfolds like a vibrant mosaic—13 tracks performed by rotating ensembles of American and Brazilian musicians, each adding their own hues to a rich spectrum of sound.

For Cohen, the project was truly a labor of love. Since childhood in Newark, New Jersey, he’s been captivated by the breezy fusion of samba and jazz, inspired by Sergio Mendes and Brasil ’66 records his parents played at home. Recording sessions for Embraceable Brazil began over twelve years ago, with Cohen meticulously revisiting and reworking the music until he was satisfied. “I would record the music, then redo it and shelve it, wait a year and redo it again,” he says. “At the end of 2023 or beginning of 2024, I vowed that it was time to get this thing finished up.”

The result is a collection that honors tradition while bending boundaries. Reverent renditions of Brazilian classics like Milton Nascimento’s “Tarde” and Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “The Girl from Ipanema” sit alongside adventurous reimaginings of unexpected material. Cohen transforms Pat Martino’s fusion anthem “Joyous Lake” and even Carly Simon’s pop hit “You’re So Vain” into rhythmically rich, groove-driven bossa nova gems.

Standout moments include Chico Pinheiro’s guitar and John Swana’s electronic valve instrument on “Tarde,” Orlando Haddad and Patricia King’s vocals on Toninho Horta’s “Aquelas Coisas Todas,” and Barbara Mendes’s laid-back voice paired with Larry McKenna’s saxophone on “The Girl from Ipanema.” Together with Cohen’s drumming and Edson da Silva Café’s percussion, the album’s sonic palette balances nostalgia with surprise.

Cohen’s journey began with childhood drum lessons, high school bands, and hours of practice at George Washington University before fully committing to Philadelphia’s jazz scene. Over the decades he’s worked with the likes of Odean Pope, Shirley Scott, Orrin Evans, and Joey DeFrancesco, and studied with the great Tony Williams. His discography reflects wide-ranging collaborations, from Diggin’ In, Digging Out with Chris Potter to Joyride with Benito Gonzalez and Tim Ries.

With Embraceable Brazil, Cohen steps into a dual role as drummer and producer. “I was really proud of this producer in me that kind of emerged,” he reflects. “You just never know what possibilities there are until you try something new. The future is sometimes more open than we think.”

Owelu Dreamhouse Debuts with “Tourist”: A Soulful Exploration of Identity and Belonging

Owelu Dreamhouse is the latest creative venture from vocalist Nkechi Anele and arranger/multi-instrumentalist Nic Ryan-Glenie, longtime collaborators who first came to prominence as members of Melbourne’s soul powerhouse Saskwatch. With their new project, the pair blends cinematic soul, psychedelia, and Afrobeat into a strikingly personal exploration of identity, heritage, and belonging.

The name Owelu (pronounced Oh-WAY-lew) is inspired by Nkechi’s grandmother’s Nigerian village, Owaelu, marking a deep connection to ancestry while symbolizing a return to authenticity and storytelling rooted in lived experience.

The debut single, Tourist (out September 4, 2025, via Hopestreet Recordings), captures the third-culture kid experience—the paradox of feeling out of place at home and abroad—through a lush, sweeping arrangement. Real stories from travel and cultural displacement run through the lyrics, while the music builds with cinematic intensity, performed by a powerhouse ensemble of Naarm/Melbourne’s most active musicians.

“It’s the quintessential third-culture kid experience – a complex inversion of the norm with both its drawbacks and freedoms,” says Nkechi. “Growing up, the constant feeling of difference often carried a heavy resentment. Luckily, my 20s brought the realisation of the sheer beauty in this unique position.”

“Tourist” was co-produced and engineered by Henry Jenkins (Karate Boogaloo, Surprise Chef, Ella Thompson) with tape operation by Alex Bennett (Sound Recordings), whose analog touch adds depth and nostalgic warmth.

For Anele and Ryan-Glenie, Owelu Dreamhouse is the natural evolution of a partnership forged during Saskwatch’s rise, when the band lit up stages at Glastonbury, CMJ, WOMADelaide, Splendour in the Grass, BluesFest, Falls Festival, and more—sharing bills with legends like Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Maceo Parker, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, and Earth, Wind & Fire.

With Owelu Dreamhouse, the duo channels that history into something new, weaving cultural ties, generational stories, and bold, genre-crossing sonics into a fresh chapter of Melbourne’s ever-evolving soul scene.

James Hunter Six Announce Off The Fence – A Landmark New Album on Easy Eye Sound

The James Hunter Six are back with their first release on Easy Eye Sound, and it’s one that captures everything fans have come to love about the British rhythm & soul legend. Set for release on January 16, 2026, Off The Fence is a landmark record—bridging James Hunter’s past, present, and future while reaffirming his status as one of the most distinctive voices in modern soul.

For over three decades, GRAMMY-nominated singer, songwriter, and guitarist James Hunter has been hailed for his gritty yet smooth voice, sharp lyrical wit, and timeless songwriting. MOJO magazine once called him “The United Kingdom’s Greatest Soul Singer,” and with this new record, he continues to prove why.

Perhaps the most talked-about moment on Off The Fence is “Ain’t That A Trip,” a joyous, jump-blues duet with longtime collaborator Van Morrison. The pair first worked together in the mid-’90s, with Hunter appearing on Morrison’s A Night In San Francisco (1994) and Days Like This (1995), while Morrison guested on Hunter’s 1996 album Believe What I Say. Now, nearly 30 years later, their creative bond comes full circle.

“I tried to get Van to sing one of my songs 30 years ago, but I hadn’t really written anything he fancied at the time,” recalls James. “But we were having a chin wag backstage at a gig where we were opening, and I asked him if he wanted to sing something on our next record and he said yes. Hearing him actually singing words I wrote gave me a real kick. It’s brilliant.”

Ahead of the album’s release, fans can stream the first single “A Sure Thing,” a horn-driven Northern Soul gem that shimmers with infectious energy and Hunter’s trademark wordplay.

“I thought the title was a nice phrase and, musically, I was trying to get a bit of Northern Soul in there—which is where we’re trying to appeal to people’s feet,” James explains. “But lyrically, it’s just a different way of reflecting on somebody saying that they want to play things safe.”

With its rolling groove, punchy brass, and irresistible chorus, the track offers a perfect late-summer pick-me-up.

James Hunter Six has always been about chemistry. Alongside Hunter, the group includes Myles Weeks (double bass), Rudy Albin Petschauer (drums), Andrew Kingslow (keyboards, percussion), Michael Buckley (baritone saxophone), and Drew Vanderwinckel (tenor saxophone). Together, they deliver a seamless blend of soul, R&B, and jump blues, built on years of near-telepathic interplay.

Off The Fence also marks an important milestone: it’s been 40 years since James Hunter’s first album release back in 1986. Born in Colchester, Essex, Hunter’s lifelong journey began at age nine when his grandmother gifted him a Dansette record player and a stack of 78s—including Jackie Wilson’s 1958 classic “Reet Petite.” That spark set him on a course toward becoming one of the UK’s most respected soul voices.

Now, eleven studio albums later, Hunter shows no signs of slowing down. Off The Fence represents not only the culmination of decades of dedication but also a bold new chapter as his first release on Dan Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound (The Black Keys).

With 12 original tracks, heartfelt grit, and soul-deep delivery, Off The Fence is set to become a defining release in 2026.

Till Brönner Announces New Album ITALIA – A Sun-Drenched Journey Through Italy’s Golden Musical Era

German jazz virtuoso Till Brönner is set to transport listeners to the vibrant soundscape of Italy from the 1960s through the early 1980s with his forthcoming album, ITALIA, released via earMUSIC on September 5, 2025. This album marks Brönner’s first collaboration with earMUSIC/Edel, and pre-orders are available starting today.

Accompanying the album announcement is the first single, Viva la Felicità, a reimagined version of the beloved Signor Rossi theme from the iconic 1970s Italian cartoon series. The song captures the adventures of a small man in a red hat, wandering the world in search of happiness and discovery.

ITALIA was recorded in Bari and Rome and produced by Till Brönner alongside Nicola Conte, a celebrated DJ, jazz musician, and sound aesthete from Apulia. Conte is internationally recognized for his refined, genre-blending approach that fuses jazz, bossa nova, and club culture. Their collaboration promises an album that is both elegant and deeply rooted in the spirit of Italian musical heritage.

The album’s repertoire primarily draws from the 1970s and early 1980s, a period Brönner describes as a golden era of European musical exchange. Italian songs traveled across borders, filling French radio airwaves and German record stores, shaping a continental cultural mood.

"Italy created a kind of pan-European sound," Brönner explains. "It was an atmosphere that was formative for an entire generation."

Conte adds, "We focused on a moment in Italian cultural history that is still, to this day, one of the most engaging, artistically relevant and colourful."

The music of that era mirrored a collective optimism, balancing lighthearted pop with deeper explorations of life’s complexities. Brönner sees parallels with today’s world: "There is a lot of hope now that things might shift toward something more human and down to earth again – and that’s exactly the kind of feeling you could literally sense in the ’70s and ’80s."

ITALIA combines well-known classics with rarities from Italian pop culture that never gained recognition beyond Italy. The album features works by legendary artists such as Lucio Battisti, Paolo Conte, and Tony Renis, alongside iconic film scores by Ennio Morricone, Piero Piccioni, and Franco Micalizzi. Brönner also contributes an original composition that blends seamlessly with the vintage repertoire.

"The album contains many songs that are well-known – at least from a non-Italian perspective. But there are also surprises. Nothing is more boring than a record where you know exactly how it will sound from the first note," Brönner says.

For the first time on a studio album, Brönner lends his voice, singing in Italian on both the lead single Viva la Felicità and the melancholic hit L’Appuntamento, originally popularized by Ornella Vanoni. Brönner shares, "When I translated the lyrics into German, I thought: That could have been my story."

The album alternates between instrumental tracks, highlighting Brönner’s signature trumpet and flugelhorn, and vocal performances by a star-studded roster including Chiara Civello, Sera Kalo, Mario Biondi, Mandy Capristo, and Giovanni Zarrella.

The inspiration for ITALIA is deeply personal. Brönner spent part of his childhood in Rome, a formative period that shaped his sensibilities and instilled a profound connection to the Italian spirit. "Some records come from a feeling. This one came from pure love," he reflects.
