CAGLE & NASH - LOUNGEVITY
Hot off the heels of their debut album Soul Complete, North Carolina-based songwriting duo Cagle & Nash are back from the studio with their sophomore release - Loungevity. From the moment you pick up the disc and see the album art adorned with pics of sunglasses and cocktail bars, it's clear that Greg Cagle (lead vox, guitar) and Rick Nash (horns) have taken the lounge aesthetic to heart for this album. And the pair don't disappoint, with 11 smooth and soulful new tracks spanning a range of cocktail-friendly genres. The overall vibe of Loungevity fits in the jet-set philosophy of the classic Space Age Pop and Lounge acts from the '50s and '60s. There are the lush horn and string arrangements, topped with Cagle's smooth baritone and accented by tight female background vocals. But Cagle & Nash also add a bit of funk and bite to the mix, drawing influences from late '70s acts like Steely Dan and Chicago. Loungevity begins with the upbeat and radio-friendly "Straight to L.A.," a perfect track to start any day. "Black Tie Affair" tells tales of the good life, spent behind the bar with a cocktail in one hand and a stack of money in the other. "If Only" and "Mmm Paradise" draw influences from the smooth bossa-nova vibe, while "A Little Bit of Attention" is a full-on funk jam. All-around, Cagle & Nash tackle each genre with masterful execution, both in terms of songwriting and arrangement. The playing is top-notch and the record exudes a certain class and sophistication. The duo of Greg Cagle and Rick Nash first got their start back in the '60s, playing in bands near their hometown in North Carolina, most notably in the band Sugarcreek. Fast forward to the '80s and the duo reunited to begin composing and recording songs. Rick and Greg worked together on and off until 2008, when they officially united to form the duo Cagle & Nash. In 2009 they released their debut album Soul Complete, which was received well by both radio and press. O's Place Jazz Newsletter even named the record one of the Best Albums of 2009. Now, with the release of Loungevity the duo are back on the scene and ready keep making music.

40th ANNIVERSARY COLLECTOR'S EDITION OF MILES DAVIS' BITCHES BREW
The 40th anniversary of the release of Miles Davis’ iconic Bitches Brew is being rereleased in two separate configurations:
A Super-Deluxe 40th Anniversary Collector’s Edition 12”x12” Slipcase Box Set containing the following:

Both formats will be released on August 31, 2010, via the Columbia/Legacy label. Starting on May 26 you can view a previously unreleased video clip from Bitches Brew at MilesDavis.com. Additional exclusive clips will follow in the future. Recorded at the end of a tumultuous decade (August 1969), Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew reflected the chaos and beauty of a society stretched (and stressed) to its breaking point. This genre-bending, barrier-smashing double LP would become Miles' first RIAA gold album.
Released in April of 1970, Bitches Brew was informed by and reflective of the music that Miles heard being produced in the late-'60s by Jimi Hendrix, Sly Stone, James Brown, Santana, Marvin Gaye and others, as well as the Beatles' post-production editing pyrotechnics. The original double-LP's six tracks, as formulated in the studio by Miles and his long-time producer Teo Macero, presented a seismic breakthrough in jazz/rock/funk/R&B. The tracks comprised the 20-minute side-long "Pharaoh's Dance" (a Joe Zawinul composition), followed by four Miles compositions, the 27-minute side-long "Bitches Brew," then "Spanish Key," "John McLaughlin," and "Miles Runs the VooDoo Down," concluding with the Wayne Shorter composition, "Sanctuary."
The Collector’s Edition takes full advantage of the LP-sized 12x12 box set format. It includes (in addition to the recordings and DVD) a lavish 48-page color book, memorabilia envelope (among the contents are a reproduction of a Miles Davis cover story originally published by Rolling Stone in 1969, and correspondences from the Teo Macero archives), and a fold-out poster of Miles in concert. The super-deluxe slipcase box set design complements the Kind Of Blue: 50th Anniversary Collector's Edition released in September 2008 on Columbia/Legacy.
In 1970, the Bitches Brew double-LP gatefold introduced the memorable cover art of the late Mati Klarwein. His uniquely surreal, psychedelic motifs caught the hallucinogenic essence of Bitches Brew (and a year later in 1971, Miles' Live-Evil), as well as Santana's iconic Abraxas in 1970, the Last Poets' This Is Madness in 1971, Earth Wind & Fire's Last Days and Time in 1972, and dozens more album covers. Another example of Klarwein's painting, Zonked, is featured on the Collector’s Edition book cover.
At the heart of the Collector’s Edition book is a 5,000-word essay written by journalist-author-producer-musician Greg Tate, an authority on jazz, hip-hop and the rise of the Black Rock Coalition. Tate has annotated some 25 albums over the past two decades. Introductory notes to the book are written by reissue producers Richard Seidel and Michael Cuscuna. There will also be an interview with drummer Lenny White (whose recording career began at age 20 on the Bitches Brew sessions) conducted by Ashley Kahn, journalist-author-educator and Miles Davis authority. Kahn's Kind of Blue: The Making of the Miles Davis Masterpiece (2001) is the definitive study of that album.
As the producers' notes point out, 1998's Grammy Award®-winning 4-CD box set The Complete Bitches Brew Sessions covered all the music recorded by Miles and his group between August 1969 and February 1970, using the same general instrumentation and musicians. Starting in the summer of 1969, the core of the Miles Davis Quintet was Miles on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on soprano saxophone, Chick Corea on electric piano, Dave Holland on acoustic bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums. That is the group who succeeded Miles' so-called "second great quintet": Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone, Herbie Hancock on piano, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Tony Williams. They [the second great Quintet] flourished from 1965 to 1968, and recorded five seminal LPs: E.S.P. (1965), Miles Smiles (1966), Sorcerer and Nefertiti (both 1967) and Miles in the Sky (1968). With the dissolution of that quintet, as the Tony Williams Lifetime began, and Hancock founded Mwandishi, and Ron Carter became an even more active first-call bassist for New York recording sessions – Miles cast about for new players to join him and Wayne Shorter.
The new quintet lineup of Shorter, Corea, Holland, and DeJohnette solidified during the 1968-'69 recording of Filles De Kilimanjaro and In a Silent Way. This is the group who performs on the Copenhagen concert DVD of November 1969. By March of 1970, they were a seasoned touring group that had accepted the challenge to go head-to-head with arena rock bands at venues like Bill Graham's Fillmore where rock audiences embraced them.
But three months earlier at Columbia Studios in New York City, at the principal sessions of August 19th ("Bitches Brew," "John McLaughlin," "Sanctuary"), 20th ("Miles Runs the VooDoo Down"), and 21st ("Pharaoh's Dance," "Spanish Key"), the ranks had swelled to a dozen musicians, and looked like this: Miles on trumpet, Wayne Shorter (soprano saxophone), Bennie Maupin (bass clarinet), Joe Zawinul (electric piano - left), Chick Corea (electric piano - right), John McLaughlin (guitar), Dave Holland (acoustic bass), Harvey Brooks (electric bass), Lenny White (drums – left), Jack DeJohnette (drums - right), Don Alias (congas), and Jumma Santos (Jim Riley) - shaker. The only variation was Don Alias taking over for Lenny White on the 20th, but White was back on the 21st. The advent of multiple keyboardists, multiple bassists, and multiple percussionists and drummers is one of the defining sonic characteristics of Bitches Brew, and made a serious impression on the FM progressive rock audience.
The Collector’s Edition release adds four bonus tracks from August – alternate takes of "Spanish Key" and "John McLaughlin," and rare edits (for 45 rpm single releases) of "Miles Runs the VooDoo Down" and "Spanish Key."
Miles reconvened at Columbia Studios in New York for two days of sessions on November 19th and 28th (long after Copenhagen) with most of his group intact, except for Shorter. The lineup looked like this: Miles on trumpet), Steve Grossman (soprano saxophone), Bennie Maupin (bass clarinet), Herbie Hancock (electric piano - left), Chick Corea (electric piano - right), John McLaughlin (guitar), Ron Carter (bass), Harvey Brooks (electric bass), Khalil Balakrishna (sitar), Bihari Sharma (tambura, tabla), Billy Cobham (drums, triangle), and Airto Moreira (cuica, berimbau). The only variations were the additions of Larry Young (organ, celeste) and Jack DeJohnette (drums) on the 28th.
None of this music was used for the original Bitches Brew album (although all of it is heard on the 1998 box set). For the Collector’s Edition, producers Seidel and Cuscuna have judiciously chosen to include two short pieces – single edits of "Great Expectations" and "Little Blue Frog" – as examples to show the evolution of Miles' sound in just three short months. "These edited 45 rpm singles," the producers explain, "bound no doubt for radio stations and juke boxes, were the only nod to traditional marketing that this album received." Although the music on this single was not included in the original double LP, the single was released in February 1970 as part of the promotional set-up for the Bitches Brew full album in April 1970.
When Wayne Shorter played his final dates with the group at the Fillmore East in March, it marked a turning point, as he went on to organize Weather Report, and Corea and Holland subsequently joined forces as Circle. Only DeJohnette stayed on with Miles (through the Jack Johnson and Live-Evil period).
Soon after the April release of Bitches Brew, while Holland and DeJohnette were still on board, Shorter was replaced by Gary Bartz on saxophone, Keith Jarrett joined as a second keyboardist (on organ, complementing Corea's electric piano), and Airto Moreira joined on percussion. "Their outstanding live Tanglewood performance from August 18, 1970, of four compositions from Bitches Brew" the producers note, "shows further development of the material due in large part to the added colors possible with the larger ensemble. In the hands of master improvisers, the constant evolution that a piece of music experiences is fascinating. The full story can only be told with the passage of time in live performance."
Greg Tate explores a world of contexts in which to understand Bitches Brew both literally and figuratively. Miles' fatherly instruction to Lenny White (some 25 years his junior) was "to literally think of all the assembling players as stewing in a big pot where they were all the bitches." Tate then places the album "forthrightly within the pantheon of the period's other goddess-muse inspired masterworks: Eric Clapton's Layla, the Rolling Stones' Exile On Main Street, Santana's Abraxas, James Brown's Original Funky Divas, and Funkadelic's Maggot Brain and Cosmic Slop."
After Bitches Brew, Tate concludes, "Miles didn't wait five years to radically switch up his game in the '70s – for the next half decade he will steadily release edgy, rough-angled and prophetic music that sounds as contemporary today as any front runner we care to choose – OutKast, Bjork, Radiohead, the Roots, Erykah Badu, bring 'em on – Bitches possesses all their contemporaneity and stuff beyond their grasp too, the shape of jazz to come, still."

MINDI ABAIR IN HI FI STEREO & TOUR DATES
Smooth jazz sax player Mindi Abair has just released her newest CD entitled, In Hi-Fi Stereo, and it’s definitely going to be a major hit from the sound if it. From start to finish, In Hi-Fi Stereo is something classic and something new at the same time. Abair re-introduces vintage jazz, R&B and soul on her new album along with solid performances from a stellar line up to chill with. The phrase 'in hi-fidelity stereo' was used a lot back in the 1960s, and this 48-minute CD often recalls the improvisatory soul-jazz recordings of the '60s and '70s. Direct or indirect influences like the Crusaders, the Brecker Brothers, David Sanborn, Tom Scott's L.A. Express, Grover Washington, Jr., David 'Fathead' Newman, and Hank Crawford serve Abair well on an album that is mostly instrumental but also contains a few vocal offerings. The most memorable is a remake of James Brown's 'It's a Man's Man's Man's World,' which boasts a bluesy performance by singer Lalah Hathaway (daughter of the late soul legend Donny Hathaway).

SERGIO MENDES - BOM TEMPO & BOM TEMPO BRASIL
Brazilian musician Sergio Mendes is set to release two album on June 1st, 2010. Bom Tempo Brasil is a collection of remixes of his latest album Bom Tempo, which showases Sergio Mendes’ original vision and passion to a new level by laying additional shades of soul, funk, electronica and hip-hop onto the maestro’s already rich palette. Bom Tempo Brasil is scheduled for a simultaneous June 1st release on Concord Records along with Bom Tempo.
There’s plenty of energy from the get-go, as producer Paul Oakenfold puts a thumping groove underneath the Afro-Brazilian beat of the lead-off track, “Maracatu Atomico.” The result is an urgent backbeat that propels Seu Jorge’s spirited vocals to an almost hypnotic level. Oakenfold is back much later in the sequence, adding a layer of sheen to vocalists Nayanna Holley and Carlinhos Brown in their delivery of “Emorio,” a composition that tips its hat to earlier Mendes hits like “Mas Que Nada” and “The Frog.”
Roger Sanchez puts a frenetic spin on “Pais Tropical,” a Jorge Benjor composition that Mendes first borrowed for his 1971 album of the same name. In this outing, Sanchez wraps the rhythm around a virtual chorus of vocalists: Leporace, Hampton, Mendes, Jessica Taylor and Kleber Jorge.
Chuckie remixes and re-imagines “Ye-Me-Le,” the title track to Mendes’ 1969 Verve recording. The track positions the vocal work of Gracinha Leporace (Mendes’ wife) and Katie Hampton atop a churning undercurrent that flirts with numerous effervescent crescendos before slipping into an understated fadeout.
In “Waters of March,” producer Paul Harris injects the Jobim classic with a persistent and intriguing electro-African beat that underscores the mesmerizing work of Afro-Belgian vocalist Zap Mama (aka Marie Daulne).
Marc Jackson Burrows and Lee Dagger – otherwise known as Bimbo Jones – bring a fresh perspective to Stevie Wonder’s “The Real Thing” by positioning Hampton’s lead vocals in a tight arrangement of keyboards, horns and percussion. “When I met the 20-year-old DJ guys Bimbo Jones in London, they were totally into watching YouTube videos of Brasil ’66,” Mendes recalls. “It just goes to show you that Brazilian music has a universal appeal and it is timeless.”
Olivia and Miriam Nervo close the set by taking Mendes’ iconic1966 hit, “Mas Que Nada,” to an otherworldly place with countless layers of pulsating electronic effects, a stunning, adventurous take on a Brazilian classic.

MEDESKI MARTIN & WOOD ON TOUR
Medeski Martin & Wood (MMW)are in the midst of a world tour with a series of dates already booked through October 2010. MMW are a jazz trio formed in 1991, consisting of John Medeski on keyboards and piano, Billy Martin on drums and percussion, and Chris Wood on double guitar and bass guitar. The trio draws on influences from a number of musical traditions, from funk to Hip-Hop, and is known for an unconventional style sometimes describes as avant-groove. MMW have often worked with guitarist John Scofield. Their latest tour will take then across Japan, South America, the US and Europe.

DIMITRI FROM PARIS - GET DOWN WITH THE PHILLY SOUND
DJ and dancefloor soul authority Dimitri From Paris both compiles and reworks classic bits of disco greatness from the vaults of Philadelphia International. This particular selection focuses on the Philadelphia disco sound that was so successful throughout the '70s, and paved the way for disco fever to spread across the United States. Most of the Philly disco material was actually recorded by a single set of players and producers (including Trammps founder Earl Young, Salsoul Orchestra originator Vince Montana, Norman Harris and TJ Lindall among others), whose signature sound of silky strings, propulsive bass and a pumping four-to-the-floor beat, eclipsed the popularity of Motown by 1975. Producers Gamble & Huff have now opened up their archive of multi-track tapes for the first time to an external label, giving Dimitri the chance to work his magic in a more sophisticated way than usual. These tracks are quintessential grooves that are not only top notch examples of the Philly disco soul sound of the era -- they're also integral to the evolution of disco music all around! Includes classics and somewhat unsung genius written & produced by Gamble & Huff, including a few straight up classics and relative obscurities all the years later.
The main double CD package will be limited to 10,000 copies, with the first disc containing the original versions of classic tracks such as Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes' "The Love I Lost," Carl Bean's "I Was Born This Way," and The Trammps' "The Night The Lights Went Out," with the second used to showcase nine of Dimitri's extended edits. Current plans are also to release four additional 12-inch samplers, with the first three containing Dimitri's edits (with three cuts exclusive to the vinyl), and the fourth set to include exclusive new re-rubs by original disco edit kings Tom Moulton, John Morales and Francois Kevorkian

TEMECULA VALLEY INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL
July 9, 10 and 11, 2010, the 7th annual Temecula Valley International Jazz Festival, located in the Southern California Wine Country City of Temecula, has announced a change of venue from Main St. in Old Town, to the new Home of the Chuck Niles Memorial Jazz Library and the Temecula Valley Cultural Arts & Music Center at 27455 Tierra Alta Way. This year's festival is in honor of the "first lady of song," Ella Fitzgerald. Tributes to Ella include performances by Herb Jeffries, Freda Payne, Arthur Rand & the Ink Spots, Ray Brown Jr., and Keith Droste Trio, with one of Canada's finest bassists, Rene' Worst. Headlining the 2010 Festival is GRAMMY Award winner Poncho Sanchez. More than anything, Sanchez is a storyteller. As the leader of the most popular Latin jazz group in the world today, it's his congas and seasoned ensemble that do the talking. Other performances during the Festival include international singing star Trini Lopez, Brian Auger's Oblivion Express, 3-time GRAMMY nominee David Arkenstone, Coryell Auger Sample Trio, Patricia Talem from Brazil and more.

SONY MUSIC TO OFFER DOWNLOADS VIA PUBLIC LIBRARIES
Library Ideas, LLC, a new media company focused on Public Libraries, has announced an agreement with Sony Music Entertainment to provide its network of Public Library websites in the United States with access to songs from Sony Music’s catalog of legendary artists. Library Ideas is a new media company focused on the educational markets, based in Fairfax, Virginia. The Company offers music, movie and language learning solutions to public libraries as part of its developing product suite.
Ten Public Libraries have agreed to launch the Library Ideas music service in the next few weeks via their websites, including the Orange County Library System in Orlando, Florida, the Nashville Public Library, the Princeton (NJ) Public Library, Maricopa County Library District (AZ), Santa Clara County Public Library (CA), Paris Public Library (TX), Wilkinson Public Library (CO), and three others.
The service will allow libraries to increase the size and diversity of library collections by offering access to hundreds of thousands of songs. Under terms of the agreement, registered card holders of participating libraries will be offered the ability to join the service through the local library website and download a select number of Sony Music tracks in the MP3 format each month at no direct cost. Participating libraries will underwrite the purchase of the music.
“We have been waiting a long time for a service like this that delivers great music, compatibility with lots of devices and simplicity of use. We think this will be incredibly popular with our patrons and will help the library in marketing all its services to the community,” said Mary Anne Hodel, Director of the Orange County Library System in Orlando, Florida.
“Music is very important in our community,” said Donna Nicely, the Director of the Nashville Public Library, “and the internet is a major source of where our patrons want to get their music. We are very pleased to see this offering.”

JOHN STEIN & RON GILL - TURN UP THE QUIET
Taking a brief break from his acclaimed international quartet after Raising the Roof which jumped an impressive 43 spots on the JazzWeek radio chart and peaked at #2, jazz guitarist John Stein has chosen to spend a little quality time with the wonderful jazz vocalist and well-known jazz radio host, Ron Gill. This inspired partnership, enhanced by the presence of pianist Gilad Barkan, plays the material on their new recording Turn Up The Quiet.
Recorded, mixed and mastered by Antonio Oliart at WGBH Radio Studios in Boston, Turn Up The Quiet, illuminates the inspiration behind their longtime musical friendship while also emphasizing each musician's strengths. Stein's exquisite taste and sensitivity really shines in the spare instrumental context of voice and guitar, and his accompaniment brims with subtlety and nuance. In addition, Stein proves to be a fine acoustic bassist, with a warm flexible sound and rock solid rhythm -- able to swing the music without the aid of a drummer on the songs on which talented pianist Gilad Barkan's presence makes the group a trio.
For his part, Gill adapts beautifully to Stein's subtlety with a sensitivity of his own. His hushed, vocal romanticism makes a brilliant couplet to Stein's accompaniment, especially on album highlights like Ellington's ethereal love song "In a Sentimental Mood," the dark and haunting "My Flaming Heart," the wry irony of "Detour Ahead," and the closing Sammy Cahn-composition "Wonder Why." The repertoire here is lovely, but challenging, with technical dexterity combined with lofty chord changes, colorful word play, and enduring melody. Some of the songs are nearly forgotten gems, unearthed by Ron's lifetime study of jazz vocal material. Even the more familiar tunes radiate a quiet power through the intimate and sincere treatment John and Ron have fashioned for them.
"There are things I've learned to expect when I collaborate with Ron Gill," writes Stein in the liners to Turn Up The Quiet. "First, the repertoire will be challenging and distinctive ... Second, his concept for each song will be different and utterly personal. When you listen to Ron he's right there: he looks you in the face, and sings to you directly from the heart."
Though the concept of the album came from Stein, the project is a genuine, down-the-middle collaboration. Their arrangements are balanced and substantive; as both artists search for ways to accommodate the other. In this way, Turn Up The Quiet, is like Gill's own voice and Stein's stellar guitar, music that comes straight from the heart.

NICOLAS BEARDE FEATURED ON JAZZ NETWORK
Nicolas Bearde is an alumnus of Bobby McFerrin's renowned vocal ensemble " Voicestra" and it's offshoot, the vocal sextet SoVoSo, who’s sound has been likened to Jon Lucien, Donny Hathaway, Marvin Gaye and Lou Rawls. Bearde has clearly carved out his own style. A seasoned showman on stage Bearde’s personality shines through his sense of humor, expressive ballads to up-tempo tunes engaging a rapport that captures his audiences as he takes them on a musical journey. JEFF ANTONIUK & THE JAZZ UPDATE
Six years ago, internationally respected jazz saxophonist and educator Jeff Antoniuk decided to start a jazz camp that would help musicians get out of the basement and onto the bandstand. The transplanted Canadian was fortunate - he did not need to look far for help. Members of his own critically acclaimed quartet, Jeff Antoniuk and the Jazz Update, had done their share of touring, recording and teaching and all were university jazz professors in the Mid-Atlantic region.
Antoniuk himself taught saxophone at Towson University; bassist Tom Baldwin was at University of Maryland; pianist Wade Beach taught at George Mason; and percussionist Tony Martucci was at Virginia Commonwealth University. It was obvious they should become core faculty. Over the years the adult jazz camp was expanded to two sessions and public concerts were added. Today the Maryland Summer Jazz Festival brings in over a dozen guest artists yearly to teach in the classrooms and perform on concert stages in and around the nation's capital.
Among the exciting guest artists this year is one of the most accomplished women in jazz, percussionist Sherrie Maricle, PhD. She has been honored with many awards including The Kennedy Center Alliance Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Arts. Maricle leads the famed Diva Orchestra. She also performs with The New York Pops and is their director of education. She has graced the stages of Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center and the Hollywood Bowl.
Also new to the festival this year is saxophonist Walt Weiskopf who is highly regarded as a composer, author and for his technical prowess; he has worked with Frank Sinatra, Steely Dan and with jazz pianist and arranger Toshiko Akiyoshi. He is an associate professor at the Eastman School of Music.
Guitarist Steve Rochinski traveled far from his roots in Washington, D.C. to work with top players such as Tal Farlow, Tim Hagans and Joe Lovano. In 1984 he left the road to teach at Berklee College of Music. He records on Germany's leading jazz guitar label, Jardis Records. His books and recordings are sold internationally and students come from all over the world to study with him.
Young pianist Zaccai Curtis is the leader of the New York-based band Insight. He began a meteoric rise in the Latin Jazz genre even before graduating from the New England Conservatory in 2005. He has won numerous awards and commissions and a Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism Artist Fellowship for original composition in 2007.
Trumpeter Kenny Rittenhouse is a jazz professor at George Mason University. He performs with the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and Army Blues Jazz Ensemble and his own quartet. With a master's degree in jazz performance from the University of Maryland, he also works with jazz educator Jamey Aebersold.
At the heart of the festival is a jazz day camp featuring two sessions of intensive instruction for adults. Teachers represent many university jazz programs and are the same fantastic players heard in the public concerts.
Workshops are structured to help gifted amateurs and semi pros improve technique and improvisational skills to help them get gigging. The camp has been the catalyst for many popular jazz bands performing in the region. Scholarships and internships encourage young talent from high school to college age.
The event kicks off with a July 20 concert featuring Jeff Antoniuk and the Jazz Update at Blues Alley, the nation's premiere jazz club, located in Washington, D.C. The group will celebrate the recent release of their CD, Brotherhood. The Jazz Mafia—an intricately woven collective of jazz virtuosos, top MCs, singers, arrangers, and composers that include many of the Bay Area's most innovative and prolific musical forces — have announced their first tour of major festivals nationwide. Traveling as a 45-piece group for the tour, Jazz Mafia will perform their critically acclaimed hip-hop symphony "Brass, Bows & Beats," which they premiered to sold-out audiences in San Francisco in 2009. BRIAN MCKNIGHT TO LEAVE THE WAVE 94.7
L.A.’s The Wave, KTWV-FM (94.7), the one time smooth jazz station has announced the departure of morning-show host Brian McKnight. McKnight, the multi-platinum R&B star, has also hosted his own TV show, a syndicated radio show, toured the world and is writing a book — a schedule that forces him to prerecord some programs for KTWV. Apparently station management prefers a live and local host every day. McKnight said that his weekday 6- 9 a.m. show hampered his playing live concerts, except on the weekends. "I have thoroughly enjoyed my time the last three years. I love the one-on-one with the fans," McKnight said, but "it seemed like a good time to get out." Replacing McKnight will be Kim Amidon, who for 22 years co-hosted mornings at adult-contemporary station KOST-FM (103.5), until the station replaced her in November 2007. McKnight is scheduled to finish Friday, with Amidon taking Monday.KTWV was one of the first radio stations in the country to call itself smooth jazz after it changed from a rock format back in 1987. But now the Wave markets itself as "smooth adult contemporary." Actually, the station is typical of many other so-called smooth jazz stations that include in the playlists instrumentals, plus more vocals, R&B songs in particular. So even though Wave listeners can still hear saxophone works by Boney James and Dave Koz, they'll also get Mariah Carey, Phil Collins, Michael Jackson and Fleetwood Mac, artists who overlap and now compete with the playlist on KOST.The changes seem to have paid immediate dividends. In January, the station placed 16th in Los Angeles/Orange County ratings, averaging 2.9% of the audience age 6 and older. In February, KTWV shot up to a fifth-place tie, at 3.5%. The station remained at 3.5% and placed sixth in March, the most recent figures available from the Arbitron ratings service.McKnight, whose own songs pepper the station's playlist, called the new music Kaye has added "a breath of fresh air." But he's also wary of disappearing venues for instrumentalists. "Smooth jazz is a dying breed. The Wave is kind of like the last man standing," he said, alluding to the demise of smooth jazz stations over the last two years in New York, Chicago and San Francisco.

NORMAN BROWN - SENDING MY LOVE
Smooth jazz guitarist Norman Brown has completed a new album, Sending My Love, which follows 2007's Stay With Me. The latter featured the smooth jazz hits "Let's Take a Ride" and "Pop's New Groove." Sending My Love (Brown's eighth CD) is scheduled to be released on June 22 via the Concord Records label. It includes nine original songs and a cover of Kenny Loggins' "Celebrate Me Home," which was co-written by pianist Bob James. Other songs include "Come Go With Me," "Here's My Number," "Play Time" and "Special Moments," among others. Producers on Sending My Love include Brown, Herman Jackson, Tha Bizness, Lloyd Tolbert, Emmery Williams and Rochella Brown. Musicians include Herman Jackson on keys, Alex Al on bass, Teddy Campbell on drums, Jubu on rhythm guitar, Kevin Richard on percussion, and Melvin Moore III and Rochella Brown on vocals.

DETROIT JAZZ FEST LINEUP ANNOUNCED
Festival organizers have announced the lineup for the 31st Detroit International Jazz Festival (DJF), Friday, September 3 through Monday, September 6, in downtown Detroit. Subtitled "Flame Keepers – Carrying the Torch for Modern Jazz," the Detroit Jazz Fest will feature a veritable "dean's list" of alumni who passed through the "schools" of Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Betty Carter, Ray Brown, Miles Davis and Gil Evans. "2010 artists Mulgrew Miller, Bobby Watson, Branford Marsalis, Terence Blanchard, Randy Brecker, and Benny Green were all in Blakey's band at one time or another," says festival director Terri Pontremoli. "These musicians went on to develop their own bands, explore new territory and nurture a new generation of flame keepers," she added. "In jazz, a lot of press is given to the veterans or to the young lions. I am happy to focus this year on these 'middle men' who are in the peak of their creative and technical powers, making significant music in our time."
As the 2010 artist in residence, pianist Mulgrew Miller will be featured on several stages throughout the weekend. On opening night, his trio will be joined by Take 6, and his other appearances include a duo piano session with Kenny Barron, a performance with his own band Wingspan, and a project with Detroit-based artists Karriem Riggins and Bob Hurst.
Bobby Watson will reunite HORIZON with Terell Stafford, Victor Lewis, Edward Simon and Essiet Essiet. Michael Weiss's quintet will feature Randy Brecker in a tribute to Horace Silver, and Benny Green, along with Christian McBride and Greg Hutchinson will pay homage to Ray Brown. Maria Schneider, a clear disciple of composer/arranger Gil Evans, will bring her entire orchestra to town.
In recognition of the 100th birthday of Django Reinhardt, the Hot Club of Detroit will perform. "Brownie Speaks" will feature 20-somethings Dominick Farinacci and Jonathan Batiste remembering Clifford Brown. A special tribute to Detroit's Pepper Adams will feature the great baritone saxophonist Gary Smulyan with another Detroit hero, pianist Barry Harris. "Defenders of the Groove" with vocalist Ernie Andrews, Detroit's Louis Hayes, Donald Harrison, Eddie Henderson, and Melvin Sparks are sure to tear it up. Vocalists this season include Tierney Sutton and Grammy-winner Kurt Elling with special guest Ernie Watts. The Manhattan Transfer will perform some of their recent Chick Corea material and then swing standards with the Detroit Jazz Festival Orchestra, under the direction of Dennis Wilson.
Other artists include pianist Danilo Perez, saxophonist Tia Fuller, Freddy Cole Trio, Scott Kinsey Quartet, Poogie Bell Band with Victor Bailey, and The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Newly signed Mack Avenue Records artist Kirk Whalum, joined by Lalah Hathaway and Robert Randolph, will perform the music of Donny Hathaway. Pumping the B3 in a Saturday night fish fry will be Pat Bianchi Trio and Mike LeDonne Quartet. The Mambo Legends Orchestra with former members of Tito Puente's band will get folks out of their seats. The legendary Roy Haynes will appear with his Fountain of Youth Band, and drummer extraordinaire Matt Wilson will present Trio M with pianist Myra Melford and bassist Mark Dresser in an adventurous set.

MILES DAVIS 84th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
Fifteen years and eight Grammy Awards after its launch in 1996, Columbia/Legacy's critically acclaimed Miles Davis Series continues to honor the most prolific and influential figure in 20th century modern jazz. In celebration of Miles' 84th birthday on May 26, 2010, the stage is set for a multi-tiered commemoration of the life and times, and the music and art, of Miles Davis.

FREDERIC YONNET - REED MY LIPS
Urban Jazz harmonicist Frederic Yonnet has announced that his upcoming album, Reed My Lips, will be available to fans before it is actually complete. On May 4, in a pioneering effort that leverages technology, art and reality, Yonnet halts all aspects of production -- recording, packaging and video -- to give fans a snapshot of his work at that very moment in the creative process. The work in progress, subtitled The Rough Cut, is available exclusively to fans purchasing digital download cards at live concerts or at http://www.fredyonnet.com/. A unique code gives users access to The Rough Cut files. Email alerts will announce when new material is available for download. Comments posted to the website will be considered in the subsequent Reed My Lips: The Final Mix, releasing this summer and available on iTunes.
Yonnet coined the term "Reality CD" to describe the bold concept of allowing fans to observe key phases of the production. "People are curious about the creative process so I decided to make them a part of it at a point when they could actually make a difference," said Yonnet. While many of the tracks have been recorded and a packaging direction developed, Yonnet still has to make decisions about artwork, guests, background vocals, song titles, etc. Works on The Rough Cut are copy written.
According to Yonnet's manager and publicist, Carla Sims, the reality is that fans were constantly asking about the status of the new album. In order to give them an early listen, Yonnet decided to release the draft artwork and music tracks in their evolutionary state despite the fact that it might open up a floodgate of comments. "I realize it's risky to expose drafts outside of musical circles, and even more risky to encourage feedback, but I welcome it," said Yonnet. "I'm confident in my work and view all comments as constructive."
As one of the most innovative harmonica players on the music scene, Yonnet is best known for his strong improvisational skills and ability to play chromatically on a diatonic harmonica. His impressive style has led to recordings and performances with music legend Stevie Wonder and award-winning songwriter David Foster. Rolling Stone magazine referred to Yonnet as "Prince's killer harmonica player" and praise from trendsetters has affirmed his mission to change the way the music industry and enthusiasts regard the "pocket" instrument.

'RARITIES EDITIONS' FROM ERIC CLAPTON, MARVIN GAYE, AND BOB MARLEY
Universal Music Enterprises is releasing a series of albums comprised of essential collector's tracks associated with a classic album from a classic artist, Rarities Editions from Eric Clapton, Bob Marley, and Marvin Gaye, among others. These were released on April 27, 2010 (physical and digital) by Universal Music Enterprises (UMe). Originally issued as the bonus CD in the Deluxe Edition series, these discs are now available individually, at a single-album price, for the first time.
Eric Clapton – 461 Ocean Boulevard – (Rarities Edition) (Polydor/UMe): Clapton's 1974 album 461 Ocean Boulevard stands as a milestone in his revered catalog, the album on which he reinvented himself as a solo artist with some of his most personal music. Musicians on the disc then served as his backing ensemble on tour, which concluded with a triumphant two-night stand at London's Hammersmith Odeon that December. Those concerts provide the tracks on this Rarities Edition, from versions of "I Shot The Sheriff," "Let It Grow," "Badge," "Layla" and "Can't Find My Way Home" to a bittersweet rendition of Charlie Chaplin's "Smile" and an extended medley of blues originally by Elmore James, Robert Johnson, and Freddie King.
Bob Marley – Legend – (Rarities Edition) (Tuff Gong/Island/UMe): This collection from the reggae great brings together 13 remixes, many of which were issued on 12" singles in the mid-'80s and had never appeared on album until 2002's Legend - Deluxe Edition. Along with extended remixes of "Jamming," "One Love/People Get Ready" and "Could You Be Loved" are the five remixes originally issued on the U.S. version of 1984's Legend--"No Woman, No Cry," "Exodus," "Jamming," "Waiting In Vain" and "Buffalo Soldier"--plus a remix of "Lively Up Yourself" available only on the Deluxe Edition and now this Rarities Edition of Legend.
Marvin Gaye – I Want You – (Rarities Edition) (Motown/UMe): Gaye helped define the early 1970s with two classic self-produced albums: What's Going On and Let's Get It On. Then, after building his own studio, he began collaborating with Leon Ware, then best known for co-writing "I Wanna Be Where You Are" for Michael Jackson and "Body Heat" for Quincy Jones. Together they created 1976's I Want You, even more sensual, layered and personal than Let's Get It On. This Rarities Edition lays bare that album with demo versions, a "stripped" version of the #1 hit title track, alternate vocals, extended takes, alternate mixes and more.

BETTYE LAVETTE - INTERPRETATIONS: THE BRITISH ROCK SONGBOOK
Ever since her appearance at the Obama inauguration, things have been coming up roses for Bettye LaVette. Upcoming is the the May 25 release of Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook and Robert Plant has invited Bettye to open for his July tour. Betty’s 3rd album for Anti-, and the follow-up to her Grammy-nominated Scene Of The Crime, is earning considerable praise from both the press and her artist peers, and she's already booked for a performance on "The Late Show with David Letterman" for June 23. The request to join the legendary Led Zeppelin vocalist on tour is not so much a notch in Bettye’s belt as it is another link in the chain: Her latest work is an impassioned dissertation on the much-documented influence that American blues and soul had on British rock n' roll- but more than that, it's an exploration of how those echoes from a foreign shore in turn influenced and reshaped American blues and soul. JAMES TAYLOR & CAROLE KING - LIVE AT THE TROUBADOR
In November of 1970 James Taylor and Carole King first performed together at the Troubadour on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, California. Taylor had just released his debut album for the Beatles' newly formed Apple Records and King was finding her way as a first time solo performer even though by then she was a famous songwriter with a string of hits for other artists. When they returned to the club for a two-week co-headlining run in 1971 their lives were somewhat different. That summer Taylor's "Fire and Rain" was topping the charts and King's landmark Tapestry was on its way to making her a music superstar. Thirty-six years later, in November 2007, James Taylor, Carole King and members of their renowned original band "The Section" (featuring guitarist Danny Kortchmar, bassist Leland Sklar and drummer Russell Kunkel) returned to the Troubadour for a three-night, six-show run to celebrate the venue's 50th anniversary. Those historic shows are documented in Live At The Troubadour, a special 2-disc CD/DVD to be released on May 4th from Hear Music/Concord Music Group.
This remarkable recording, culled from these unforgettable shows, features 15 songs and 75 minutes of stunning performances of the pair's most beloved hits such as Carole King's "So Far Away," "It's Too Late," and "Will You Love Me Tomorrow?" as well as James Taylor's "Carolina in My Mind," "Sweet Baby James," and "Fire and Rain," to name just a few.The return to the intimate Troubadour-the fertile ground that served as the unofficial home to a some of the era's defining musicians such as the Eagles, Elton John, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt and Joni Mitchell--rekindled King's and Taylor's love for making music together.
Variety enthused at the time, "Taylor and King reminded us about the intensity of the song, that the artistically-rich and commercially-viable are not mutually exclusive and how one tiny club continues to be a birthing room for some of this city's most memorable music." The experience was deeply felt by everyone, the musicians on stage, and the fans in attendance as well as the project's technical crew: audio producer Peter Asher (an instrumental figure throughout Taylor's career) and Emmy-winning video director, Martyn Atkins. Live at the Troubadour is captured in sterling 5.1 stereo and state-of-the-art high definition video.
In the album's liner notes, Taylor states: "The Troubadour in 1971 wasn't the beginning, but it was a big step into the light for both of us. When we reunited for the Troubadour's 50th Anniversary celebration in 2007, it felt like yesterday. It was, and still is, all about the music and the celebration of performing together." King adds, "What's even more remarkable is that James's and my musical connection and friendship continue to transcend time and place. Whenever we're together, there we are.
