GUITAR LEGENDS J.J. CALE AND ERIC CLAPTON UNITE FOR SOULFUL CD RELEASE ‘THE ROAD TO ESCONDIDO’

After years of admiring each other's musical masterworks and Clapton covers of Cale songs such as After Midnight and Cocaine, guitar greats J.J. Cale and Eric Clapton have teamed up for the first time to create an original album together, The Road To Escondido, set for release on November 6. The 14-track CD was produced and recorded by the duo in August 2005 in California. The resulting music defies being labeled into any one category, but instead finds influence across the spectrum of blues, rock, country and folk. A hybrid sound that is unique musically, while still bearing the signature styles of Cale and Clapton recognized by fans around the world. The songs are warm and rich, with deep flowing rhythms, yet use an economy of words to express much.

In a true collaboration, Cale and Clapton jointly produced and recorded the album, each playing and singing on the tracks. Cale wrote 11 of the songs, Clapton wrote Three Little Girls, John Mayer wrote Hard To Thrill and the duo cover the blues classic Sporting Life Blues. J.J. Cale's touring band accompanies them on the album as well as guest musicians including, Taj Mahal, John Mayer, Derek Trucks, Doyle Bramhall II, Albert Lee, Nathan East, Willie Weeks and Steve Jordan. Particularly special is the involvement of Billy Preston, who donated his classic keyboard talents throughout the album. The album is dedicated to Preston and Clapton's late friend Brian Roylance.

"Eric and I have known each other for a long time and it was a great experience to finally make a record together - he's a great musician and it was a pleasure to work so closely on this project with him," said J.J. Cale. "This was the realization of what may have been my last ambition, to work with the man whose music has inspired me for as long as I can remember, there are not enough words for me to describe what he represents to me, musically and personally, and anyway I wouldn't want to embarrass him by going overboard, for he is a truly humble man... I think it's enough to say that we had fun, made a great record, and I for one already want to make another," said Eric Clapton.

Clapton has often said that he has tried to achieve the J.J. Cale sound and has credited Cale with singular influence over his style as a solo artist. Mojo Magazine asked Clapton in 2000 which other musician he would most like to be, his response was quick: "I don't model myself on him but I like J.J. Cale, his philosophy, writing skills, musicianship. He's a fine, superior musician, one of the masters of the last three decades of music."

J.J. Cale is known for being reclusive. He lets his music speak for itself and by his own choice has not become famous in the conventional terms of the word. Instead, preferring to shun the spotlight for a more simple existence based on his musical creations. Ironically, doing just that, and focusing on his music, has turned him into a guitar legend over the past four decades. The depth of his influence can be felt in artists such as Clapton and Mark Knopfler, but the sheer breadth of his appeal is made clear by the diverse group of artists who have covered his songs from Johnny Cash, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and The Allman Brothers to Bryan Ferry, Deep Purple, Santana and more recently jam bands like Widespread Panic.

Cale grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma and cites Chet Atkins, Les Paul and Chuck Berry as some of his earliest influences. He is often quoted as saying, "In trying to imitate them, I missed it. And I came up with my own kinda thing." And so, Cale began playing the local Tulsa club scene in the early 1950s surrounded by other natives such as David Gates (Bread) and Leon Russell. After moving to Los Angeles in the mid-60s, he recorded the song After Midnight.
Already an accomplished guitarist with bands such as the Yardbirds, Cream and Blind Faith, Clapton ventured to a solo career with the release of his 1970 self-titled Eric Clapton album. Mutual friend Delaney Bramlett had given Clapton a copy of Cale's song After Midnight. Clapton decided to cover the song and it was the first single from the album. The song became a chart-topping success. Clapton was quick to offer praise for Cale's work while promoting the album. Cale had been told of the cover but has said that he didn't pay much attention until the song came on the radio in Tulsa.

Years later, in April 1976, Cale was performing at London's Hammersmith Odeon in support of his Troubadour album release. Clapton sat in on the performance and later during that trip surprised Cale in the studio with a version of Cocaine that would appear on his 1977 Slowhand release. Again becoming a chart-topping success.

In the years to follow, the two would occasionally cross paths, but would largely carry on with their respective musical careers. Until 2004 when Clapton was organizing a Dallas-based guitar festival called Crossroads. The 3-day festival featured the world's most elite guitarists. Clapton invited Cale to perform at the festival and Cale agreed to attend. In turn, Cale invited Clapton on-stage for the set and Clapton gladly joined, unannounced, for the entire set as a member of Cale's band. The set was a highlight of the performances from the festival.

Crossroads gave Clapton an opportunity to ask Cale to consider producing an upcoming album for him. If Clapton had been seeking to replicate the trademark Cale sound, having him as producer on an album would surely achieve that unique musical quality. As the two worked on the project, creative ideas took flight and they decided to take the project further formulating a true co-produced album. The Road To Escondido marks the first full-length album the two have created together.

Cale's entire 40-plus year career has produced only 13 albums. But most critics agree that each effort is well worth the wait. Lauded by his peers and completely unfazed by musical fads, J.J. Cale is an American icon, a craftsman like no other. Clapton's career, also spanning more than 40 years, has resulted in 18 Grammy Awards and the distinct honor of being the only triple inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

LEGENDARY DRUMMER CHICO HAMILTON A SMASH ON MySPACE; NEW ALBUM ‘HERITAGE’ RELEASED

Legendary drummer and NEA Jazzmaster, Foreststorn "Chico" Hamilton, and label, Joyous Shout, have announced today a remix contest on Chico's MySpace page at www.myspace.com/chicohamilton. The drummer's fans can download unique beats picked by Chico, remix them and post them back on MySpace where Chico will pick his favorite tracks that will be posted on his MySpace website. The MySpace event and some surprise celebrity remixes will coincide with Chico's 85th birthday and a special birthday performance at Joe's Pub in New York City on September 21 at 9:30 pm.

With 85 years under his belt and 7+ decades making great music, Chico is a unique presence on MySpace where the demographic generally skews much younger. To date, Chico has amassed over 5,000 "friends" on his MySpace page and his label is using the site in innovative ways to increase that number. As the meeting place and music discovery venue of choice for the under-30 set, MySpace is also providing an arena for older artists like Chico to reach younger fans on whose radar they might not ordinarily be "As a musician, Chico has always been ahead of his time," notes Hamilton's long-time personal manager, Jeffrey Andrew Caddick. "His music is classic and definitely appeals to a broad range of fans. With MySpace, we're just using the latest and greatest technology to get the word out to even more folks and the response has been great."

Considering that Chico was born in 1921, it's fascinating to think that he's seen the advent of every new technology dedicated to entertaining the masses. From radio to television and film, 78s to 33 LPs, 8-tracks to cassettes, and now, the digital format of CDs and the Internet, Chico's music has been released in that format. Not too many artists can make that claim today, but Chico embraces it.

"You know, music is God's will," Chico explains. "Music has to find its way out there and any way I can do that, I'm gonna do that. Really music hasn't changed at all, it's the same 12 bars it's been for thousands of years. The only thing that's changed is how it gets to the people." In addition to turning 85 in 2006, Chico Hamilton has released three albums (Juniflip, Believe, 6th Avenue Romp) with a fourth, Heritage, scheduled for release on September 19, 2006.

MICHEL CAMILLLO AND TOMATITO ARE BACK TOGETHER AGAIN WITH ‘SPAIN AGAIN’ RELEASE

Pianist/composer Michel Camilo and guitarist Tomatito come together again after six years to create the follow-up to their Latin Grammy(R)-winning album Spain. In the aptly titled Spain Again. Camilo and Tomatito expand on the idea of combining jazz and flamenco harmonies by incorporating inflections of classical piano sounds and acoustic guitar with sensual gypsy and Latin rhythms. The release of Spain Again on Emarcy (Universal Music) will be followed by a string of performances at New York City's Blue Note on September 25th, 26th and 27th. These special engagements are part of the Blue Note's 25th Anniversary Celebration. The duo will also perform in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

Recording the new album proved to be exciting for Camilo: "It gave me so much joy to see that the magic is still there after all these years." Camilo and Tomatito have known each other since the early 1990s when they met in Spain at an album session for the nuevo flamenco group Ketama. They quickly became friends but didn't start touring together until 1997 and in
August 1999 they recorded Spain. The best-selling album quickly amassed much praise from the media, as noted in Jazz Times: "Spain is awe-inspiring" - and Mojo described the album as a "hugely dynamic record nothing short of overwhelming." Of their Carnegie Hall concert The New York Times stated, "... together the duo found an elusive grace."

Despite coming from exceptionally different musical worlds, the duo created a unique hybrid that transcends all genres. Their individual differences complement each other greatly as shown when joined together musically on Spain Again. Grammy(R) winner Michel Camilo is best known for combining rich jazz harmonies with the Caribbean flavors and rhythms while Tomatito is the renowned flamenco guitarist of his generation. Camilo noted that he was thrilled to see how much they both have evolved as artists: "The musical horizons we travel together on this recording are all close to our hearts. It was so amazing to see how after we shared our personal feelings for each song, we simply enjoyed the self-discovery process by letting the music tell us where it wanted to flow." The eleven-track album includes original compositions, a tribute to Astor Piazzolla, jazz standards and a collaboration with renowned singer/songwriter Juan Luis Guerra on Amor de Conuco.

Entitled 10, the album is the Grammy-nominated singer's tenth album overall. McKnight describes the album - which ranges from his signature soul ballads to smooth, sleek R&B - as "the same old Brian, just better. I finally feel like I'm in a place where I'm appreciated," he says, referring to his recent signing to Warner Bros. Records, "and that made me very comfortable and eager to work. On this record, from beginning to end, you can tell that there weren't a lot of things on my mind other than the music." Recorded in Los Angeles over the past year and a half, 10 features a duet with Jill Scott on the romantic More Than Just A Thang, shared production credit with Brian Michael Cox (Usher, Mariah Carey, Bow Wow, Mary J. Blige, Toni Braxton) on Comfortable, and a collaboration with McKnight's country star pals Rascal Flatts on the plaintive Red, White, And Blue. "The subject matter I'm dealing with on that song, the soldiers and being away from home, is a real down-home kind of story, and one that red-blooded Americans will identify with," says McKnight, who co-wrote the song with long-time friend Brandon Barnes. "So when they heard that song, both parties said, 'We have to be a part of it. It's something really special'." In addition, songwriters Tim Kelley and Bob Robinson, known as Tim and Bob, contributed to two tracks on 10, Unhappy Without You and the album's first single, Used To Be My Girl, which hits radio on September 26. NINA SIMONE GETS REMIXED AND REIMAGINED THIS FALL!

RCA and Legacy Recordings, has teamed up with producer Scott Schlachter to present the first release of a new series, Remixed & Reimagined. This brand-new collection includes many of Nina Simone’s most stand-out selections from her RCA Records period, namely those titles that sparked the imagination of the club world. Her music and life struck a powerful chord with the emerging club underground that was simmering in New York and Chicago during the late ‘70s and early ‘80s post-disco era. Fueled largely by the gay and multi-ethnic minorities that pioneered the movement, the flourishing subculture - and soon-to-be global dance music revolution - embraced Simone’s music and message. These tracks have been reinvented by some of contemporary dance and electronic music’s best producers, including Francóis K., Tony Humprhies, Mocean Worker, Coldcut, Nickodemus, Groovefinder, Madison Park & Lenny B., Chris Coco, DJ Logic, Organica, and more. Nina Simone: Remixed and Reimagined will be in stores 10/31!

NOUVELLE VAGUE RELEASES 'BANDE A' PART'

Nouvelle Vague’s Bande A’ Part moves musically between Jamaica to the Calypso Isle of Trinidad via Cuban salsa, Haitian voodoo and eventually back to the Brazilian coast. The arrangements and orchestrations are very colorful – a lot of percussion and acoustic guitars topped off with sensual feminine voices, accordions and steel drums. Nouvelle Vague also covers songs by ‘80s groups Yazoo, Visage and New Order on this release. In other words, think of the type of songs that are typically set in the Caribbean between 1940 and 1970, and imagine a young Jamaican with his acoustic guitar singing Blondie’s Heart Of Glass in his Kingston township and now you can envision what the overall sound of this album is like.

LEGENDARY MUSICIAN MAYNARD FERGUSON DIES

Grammy Nominated Trumpeter Known for 'Gonna Fly Now,' the Theme to the Movie Rocky, was 78

Walter "Maynard" Ferguson, one of the most influential musicians and band leaders in the history of Jazz, passed away August 23, 2006 at 8:00 pm Pacific Daylight Time at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura, California. He was 78 years old. His death was the result of kidney and liver failure brought on by an abdominal infection. Ferguson's four daughters Kim, Lisa, Corby, Wilder and other family members were at his side when he passed away after this brief illness. He spoke by phone with his friend and manager Steve Schankman from St. Louis, longtime tour manager Ed Sargent, and friend, and fellow trumpeter Arturo Sandoval.

Ferguson had recently returned home to California from New York after several sold out performances in July at the famed Blue Note Club. During this time, Ferguson and his Big Bop Nouveau band also recorded a new album at Bennett Studios in Englewood, New Jersey. Maynard Ferguson, born May 4, 1928 in Montreal, started his career at the age of 13 when he performed as a featured soloist with the Canadian Broadcasting Company Orchestra. He played with some of the great Big Band Leaders of the 1940's including Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Barnett, Jimmy Dorsey and Stan Kenton. In 1945, at age 17, Ferguson became the leader of his own Big Band. The 78-year old musical phenomenon went on to record more than 60 albums, receiving numerous honors and awards including the GRAMMY(R) nomination for Gonna Fly Now. In 2005, Ferguson was awarded Canada's highest civilian honor, the "Order of Canada" from the Right Honorable Governor General Adrienne Clarkson. In addition to those accolades, Ferguson has been the recipient of DownBeat Magazine's prestigious "DownBeat" Award.]

"The Boss," as Ferguson is known, has been performing for packed houses for decades. His recent DVD release, "Live at The Top," captures one of his most memorable performances, a concert held at the Plaza Hotel in Rochester, New York in 1975, with Ferguson performing alongside fellow music pioneers Stan Mark, Ernie Garside and Bruce Johnston. Most recently, Ferguson and Big Bop Nouveau Band had been touring the United States. He was preparing for a Fall Tour beginning mid-September in Tokyo, Japan. He had also been invited to play for the King of Thailand's 80th birthday in January.

Ferguson's body will be cremated in his hometown of Ojai, California. Memorial contributions can be made to the Maynard Ferguson Music Scholarship Fund at University of Missouri - St. Louis, which was established by Steve Schankman at Maynard's 75th birthday celebration. Schankman and the Ferguson family are planning a memorial concert to take place in St. Louis which will feature many of the band's alumni and friends who Ferguson performed with during his more than 60-year musical career.

Maynard Ferguson's latest, and last, recording will be released later this year as a legacy to the life of Maynard Ferguson.

RICHARD BONA RELEASES ‘TIKI’ HIS 4TH ALBUM

Bassist, vocalist and composer Richard Bona has released his fourth studio album out now entitled, Tiki. Bona takes his musical influences ranging from Afrobeat, Latin rhythms, jazz, pop, bossa nova and funk, and presents his own unique twist on it all with an underlying African exquisiteness on the soothing Tiki. From the lovely nursery rhyme Ida Bato to the jazzy ballad Esoka Bulu, the samba-influenced Akwa samba Yaya, or the lead song Please Don’t Stop which features vocals by John Legend. Richard Bona takes the listener on a journey from his African roots that shows both growth and maturity. Bona was born in Cameroon and grew up in a musical family, and after moving from Cameroon to Paris and finally to New York in 1985, he became one of the most in demand collaborators on the international jazz scene. He worked with a remarkable array of artists such as Paul Simon, Harry Belafonte, Chaka Khan, Queen Latifah, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Salif Keta to name a few. Richard Bona is slated to perform at Joe’s Pub in New York City on September 6.

TOWER RECORDS FILES FOR BANKRUPTCY; SEEKS IMMINENT BUYER

Tower Records on August 20 filed for Chapter 11 in federal bankruptcy court. According to the filing in Delaware, eight entities own and operate the 89-store chain of music and entertainment stores plus a direct sales network and warehouse distribution facility under the Tower Records name. According to the filing, there are thousands of potential creditors, and among the 40 largest are Six Degrees Records ($1.9 million) in San Francisco; International Periodical ($1.3 million) in Chicago; City Hall Records ($595,000) in San Rafael, California; and Baker & Taylor Book ($437,000) in Chicago). Tower blames their demise to ‘industry-wide decline in the sales of physical music and video products" and "intense competition from music downloading (legal and illegal); ‘big-box’ retailers which use music and video as loss-leaders and other industry-wide factors." Tower has indicated that it would prefer to keep it business intact through the sale, through an asset liquidation, which includes the venerable Tower brand name could also occur. In the meantime, Tower is aiming to complete the sale within the October timeframe, a schedule that would allow the chain to focus on the all-important holiday buying season. We hope that Tower can find a means to this end so that music fans can still enjoy Towers’ huge inventory and selection. The last thing that we need is to depend on the likes of Target and Best Buy for our CD purchases.

RAY CHARLES & THE COUNT BASIE ORCHESTRA TECHNOLOGICALLY PAIRED

Ray Sings,Basie Swings is the title of an upcoming album which pairs Ray Charles and the current line-up of the Count Basie Orchestra – however – Charles never actually recorded with the orchestra. The compilation combines the vocals of Ray Charles, and through modern technology, pairs him up with the Count Basie Orchestra. The project is a collaborative effort involving Concord Records and Starbucks Hear Music, and it will hit coffeehouses in the US and Canada beginning Oct. 3. The project began with a discovery by Concord head of A&R John Burk, who dusted off a recording from the vaults simply titled, "Charles/Basie". The compilation is actually a mash-up of sorts, as Charles never did perform with the Basie Orchestra on the lost recording. "I was disappointed that Ray wasn’t performing with the Basie band," said Burk. "But I thought that we could re-record the music with the current Basie Orchestra. These tapes were just waiting for technology to catch up so we can help Ray do what he always did so naturally – make magic happen," said Burke.

MICHAEL MANSON’S 2nd RELEASE ‘JUST FEELIN’ IT’ SET FOR RELEASE SEPT. 12

Chicago Bass Player Releases 2nd CD September 12, 2006

With the release of his previous CD, The Bottom Line, Michael Manson joined the ranks of today's premiere jazz artists as he moved from sideman to center stage. His first single Outer Drive reached the top 10 on the R&R Smooth Jazz. His passion and precision are displayed with both unrelenting power and laid-back grace on the album that, he says, "reflects the deepest expression of all I have felt making music for the last twenty years."

For Michael Manson, the bottom line has always been great music. Since he first picked up a guitar (not a bass), he has moved persistently from strength to strength, one association leading inevitably to another in a career that has brought him front and center with the most esteemed names in jazz, gospel, R&B, rock and pop. A native of Chicago, he joined City Lights and began performing regularly on Chicago's jazz circuit. In 1999, he was invited to play the Montreux Casino Lights Festival. Sharing the stage with the likes of Boney James, George Duke and Kirk Whalum, he made connections that would eventually lead to a spot performing on the Montreux Jazz Tour.

On Michael Manson's new CD Just Feelin' It, he is credited for writing and production. For this album Michael has collected the who's who of Smooth Jazz: Rick Braun, Kirk Whalum, Jeff Lorber, Brian Culbertson, Nelson Range, Norman Brown, Paul Jackson Jr., the legendary George Duke and many more great jazz musicians. This album is a great mix of contemporary jazz, R&B and even a little gospel. ALICE SMITH ‘FOR LOVERS, DREAMERS, AND ME’

Alice Smith is an uncategorizable and rare artist whose commanding 4-octave voice lets her skip across genres effortlessly and transport you along with it. Based in NYC, but raised in Washington DC and Georgia, her references span the USA from country and classic rock to jazz and gospel. She is bringing back the American tradition of soul music with the raw emotions in her voice and relatable lyrics void of any pretense. For Lovers, Dreamers, and Me is a collection of songs that add an innovative twist to an undeniable groove. From the opening beat accompanied by piano and horn stabs, Smith reminds you that rock and soul came from the same place. The songs all have the anthemic quality of classic songwriting with a decidedly modern groove and vernacular. Whether singing about people’s need to escape the pressures of working in the cities for some relaxation in a natural environment or fighting off depression after life throws you a curve ball, her voice is full of honesty. Smith is already garnering raves from the press for her refreshing persona and songwriting. Her live shows with her band have become a touch act to follow, infecting the audience with the joy she puts into her work. For Lovers, Dreamers, and Me is sure to be one of the year’s most exciting albums from a new artist that will connect with you instantly. NATALIE COLE TO RELEASE ‘LEAVIN’ HER 20th STUDIO ALBUM

Eight-time Grammy Award winner Natalie Cole is set to release her 20th studio album on September 26, marking an impressive milestone that speaks to her musicianship, her critically acclaimed abilities as a vocalist and her connection to her fans. Leavin’ also marks her first album of new material in nearly four years, a recording that returns Cole to her musical roots as one of our time’s best r&b/pop vocalists. The Verve Records release finds the acclaimed chanteuse, who has sold more than 30 million albums, working with Grammy Award winning producer Dallas Austin, a combination that has produced one of Cole’s most dynamic recordings to date. An eclectic mix of classic pop, r&b and rock tracks, the 12-song album mixes Cole’s stunning vocals with a list of classic songs from the likes of Fiona Apple, Aretha Franklin, Kate Bush, Sting, Shelby Lynne and others, as well as a new song, 5 Minutes Away, a writing collaboration between Cole, Austin and keyboardist Chanz Parkman.

The launch of the new CD will be led by a remake of the 1972 #1 Billboard R&B single, the Aretha Franklin smash Day Dreaming. Updated with a bit of hip-hop flavor, the song is the first single from the album, and marks the release of Cole’s first urban/pop single in nearly 16 years. The title track is a soulful recast of the Shelby Lynne song from her Grammy winning 2000 release I Am Shelby Lynne. She also tackles a rock standard by taking on Neil Young’s Old Man, an eloquent compliment to the original that shows the warmth and subtlety of her voice. Then there’s Fiona Apple’s hit Criminal, on which Cole and Austin gave a bluesy feel, as well as The More You Do It, a track that pays homage to her first husband and musical collaborator, the late Marvin Yancy. The track completes a trio of soulful cuts including the Isley Brothers Don’t Say Goodnight and the Etta James inspired Lovin’ Arms, each of which grants Cole the opportunity to move back to her 70’s roots with rich, shimmering vocals. Other highlights include remakes of songs written and made famous by Sting and Kate Bush.

AARON NEVILLE NEW 'SOUL CLASSICS' ALBUM DUE SEPT. 19

This is Aaron Neville's first Sony BMG release. Due on September 19, the album comprises 13 all-time soul classics, including Otis Redding's (Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay and Sam Cooke's A Change Is Gonna Come, Ben E. King's Stand By Me and Bill Withers' Ain't No Sunshine. The set also features collaborations with Chris Botti, Chaka Khan, David Sanborn, Mavis Staples and Art Neville. "Legendary soul classics performed by one of the greatest soul voices of the 20th Century...it doesn't get better than that," says Joe DiMuro,EVP/General Manager of Sony BMG's Burgundy Records(http://www.burgundyrecords.com).

"By putting our own twist on it, we are making these beloved soul classics new again." Stewart Levine produced the album. Levine, who has worked with a bevy of platinum selling artists, including Jamie Cullum, Simply Red and B.B. King, has produced over 10 Grammy-award winning records. "This is very natural ground for Aaron, as he grew up immersed in the sounds of classic rhythm and blues. It's not a departure or some grand 'concept' -- it's a very natural fit for him and something he's wanted todo for a very long time," says Levine. "The idea behind the record was simplicity itself. We took these iconic songs and stripped them to their essence. We didn't want Aaron to cover them; we wanted him to redefine them. He did just that." "I am excited to be a part of Burgundy Records and look forward to giving my existing fans and, hopefully, new fans some brand new music,"says Aaron Neville. New Orleans' "first son" and four-time Grammy(R) award-winning artist, Neville has a trademark angelic voice and an impressive body of work to go along with it.
