After a five-year hiatus from international touring, Ron Trent is set to make a global return in 2025. To commemorate this milestone, he's collaborating with Rush Hour to release Lift Off, a new album comprising tracks recorded over the past decade.
Nearly 35 years after his groundbreaking debut, the Afterlife EP, Lift Off showcases Trent's intent to "let the imagination speak for itself," delving into the myriad influences that have shaped his distinctive sound. Diverging from his 2022 downtempo release, What Do The Stars Say To You, this 10-track collection blends epic instrumentals, thoughtful collaborations, and vocal pieces crafted with specific artists in mind.
The album retains Trent's signature elements—rich rhythms, warm chords, and intricate arrangements—while venturing into diverse sonic territories. It melds elements of R&B, jazz-funk, house, and new wave, blurring the lines between dance music's past, present, and future.
Highlights from the album include:
-
"Hot Ice," inspired by Wally Badarou,
-
"Woman of Color," featuring samba-infused percussion and lush synths,
-
"Jazz-Funk," a deep house track with jazzy undertones,
-
"Sexstrology," characterized by electric piano solos over a steady groove,
-
"Let Me See You Shining," a collaboration with Leroy Burgess that fuses deep house with boogie-era vocals.
Additional tracks like "Just Another Love Song" and "And Fly Away" showcase Trent's multifaceted artistry, with contributions from Lars Bartkuhn on guitar and spoken word by Harry Dennis on "Her."
Lift Off is available for pre-order in digital, CD, and vinyl formats, with a release date of May 23, 2025.
