Taiwanese-born pianist Jo-Yu Chen has spent years at the crossroads of classical music and jazz, expertly blending the two genres in a way few others have. After years of studying classical piano and oboe in Taiwan, Chen moved to New York to study at Juilliard, where she initially planned to follow the classical music path. But fate had other plans, and it wasn’t long before she found herself drawn to the world of jazz. Influenced by pioneers such as Jason Moran, Sam Yahel, and Kevin Hays, she soon became an important voice in contemporary jazz.
Her jazz journey has been nothing short of spectacular. Chen released several highly acclaimed albums, including Obsession (2009) with drummer Tyshawn Sorey, Stranger (2014) with guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, and Savage Beauty (2019) with saxophonist Mark Turner—each recording released on Sony Music, making her the first and only Taiwanese jazz artist signed to a major label.
During the pandemic, Chen returned to Taiwan, reconnecting with classical musicians and discovering new ways to integrate her classical training with her jazz passion. This integration came to life in her highly anticipated album, Rendezvous: Jazz Meets Beethoven, Tchaikovsky & More, set to release on May 2, 2025.
'Rendezvous': A Fusion of Classical and Jazz
Rendezvous features an imaginative blend of classical and jazz elements, featuring reimagined works by five iconic composers, including Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, and Prokofiev. The album explores the synergy between these two worlds, with a jazz trio featuring bassist Chris Tordini and drummer Tommy Crane accompanying Chen.
Among the standout pieces are Chen’s mash-up of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 and the Moonlight Sonata, which builds in intensity, as well as her emotionally charged solo rendition of Beethoven's Sonata No. 8: Pathétique. In the classical realm, the album also delves into Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and The Nutcracker Suite, offering a fresh jazz perspective on these beloved works.
Chen resists the term "crossover" when describing her music, explaining that integrating classical and jazz feels natural to her after years spent immersing herself in both worlds. “I felt it was about time to integrate them,” Chen says. The result is a work that bridges centuries of music and creates something new, fresh, and deeply personal.
Teaser Tracks Available Now
Two tracks from Rendezvous are already available for streaming: The Nutcracker Suite: Dance of the Reed Flutes and Swan Lake. These early releases showcase Chen’s creative approach to transforming classical pieces into jazz explorations, hinting at the beauty and complexity of the full album.
A Journey of Innovation
Chen’s musical journey is one of constant reinvention. In 2023, she earned a nomination for Best Instrumental Composer at Taiwan’s Golden Melody Awards for her original piece Walking Through Fear. The track combined bold piano improvisation and striking string quartet writing. Following that success, her 2024 EP Schubert & Mozart: ‘Round Midnight brought her into conversation with two of classical music's greatest composers, Schubert and Mozart, through the lens of jazz.
Rendezvous is a testament to Chen’s ability to blend innovation with tradition, challenging musical boundaries while honoring the rich legacies of classical and jazz. The album is set to be a groundbreaking release for fans of both genres.
