Renowned jazz pianist and composer Fred Hersch unveils his latest masterpiece, The Surrounding Green, marking his third release with ECM Records. This album showcases the profound synergy of Hersch's long-standing trio, featuring bassist Drew Gress and drummer Joey Baron, culminating in a studio recording that epitomizes the essence of jazz piano trio interplay.
Hersch, a 17-time Grammy nominee, is celebrated for his lyrical improvisation and nuanced compositions. In The Surrounding Green, he presents a blend of original pieces and reinterpretations of 20th-century jazz compositions, including works by Ornette Coleman, Egberto Gismonti, and the Gershwin brothers. The trio's rendition of Coleman's "Law Years" and Gismonti's "Palhaço" exemplify their ability to infuse classic tunes with fresh perspectives.
The album's title track, "The Surrounding Green," along with originals like "Plainsong" and "Anticipation," highlight Hersch's compositional prowess. These pieces are characterized by intricate harmonies, melodic inventiveness, and rhythmic sophistication, reflecting the trio's deep musical rapport developed over decades of collaboration.
Recorded in May 2024 at Lugano’s Auditorio Stelio Molo and produced by ECM's Manfred Eicher, the album benefits from the venue's acoustics, capturing the trio's dynamic range and subtle interplay. Hersch notes the exceptional communication within the trio, stating, "I feel that on this record you really hear the history! I hope that people can feel the maturity of the interaction, the sonic world, and the sensitivity at play."
The Surrounding Green stands as a testament to Fred Hersch's enduring influence in the jazz world, offering listeners an immersive experience into the refined art of piano trio performance.
