THE REBIRTH OF CD101.9 SMOOTH JAZZ IN NEW YORK...MAYBE!

If you were a fan of New York’s CD101.9 Smooth Jazz…well now there is a rumor that the station (or a variation of the former) may be on its way back. Based on yesterday’s registrations of 1063NewYork.com and CD1063NewYork.com the return of Smooth AC could be in the offing. The CD moniker was used on Emmis’ Smooth Jazz/AC “CD 101.9” WQCD from 1988 until 2008 when it switched to Rock WRXP. With this new signal covering much of New York’s commercial district, the format will help flank top ranked “106.7 Lite-FM” from a potential full-powered competitor.

Here is some background…a translator that has been shuffling across the New York area in recent months has finally gained approval to reach its intended final destination. 106.5 W293BU Union City, NJ has gained a Construction Permit to relocate to 106.3 and broadcast from 4 Times Square with 99 watts covering much of Manhattan as well as portions of Brooklyn, Queens, and New Jersey. The translator has been rebroadcasting Country programming from the HD2 subchannel of Clear Channel’s 106.7 WLTW in recent weeks, something that will continue once the station moves to 106.3 and increases power. It does appear a new old format is in line for the move.

A bit of history…WQCD ran an experiment from November 22, 2004 until August 2005, when the station's playlist included chill music, a form of relaxing music based on the music found in the beaches of Ibiza. Their ratings were not satisfactory, and the experiment ended. The station retained the tagline, "CD101.9, Your Chill-Out Station" during its successful transition back to the standard smooth jazz format.WQCD's on-air staff remained unusually stable in the generally volatile radio climate, led by morning host Dennis Quinn. Midday host Deborah Rath had been with parent company Emmis since 1988, as a veteran of both WRKS and WQHT's original incarnation "Hot 103.5". Afternoon drive host Paul Cavalconte was a veteran of New York jazz, classical and rock stations, including WQCD's generational predecessor WNEW. Evening host Sharon Davis called WQCD home for nearly a decade as well, but on February 5, 2008, CD101.9 and Smooth Jazz all came to an end.

How much Rock does NYC need! Variety is the spice of life, so why do I feel like I am living in the boondocks somewhere? In this hectic environment nowadays we need CD101.9 BADLY. I'm sick of businesses always looking at THEIR bottom line and not realizing that this is a country of, by and for the PEOPLE!

Yes I am new to smooth jazz in need to know the name of the song played by paul taylor it is played quite often on the station

In it's infancy CD 101.9 was unique, but towards the end it was boring and predictible. Way to much Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, etc.. The station definately lost it's edge. They certainly lost me their last year on the air. Many of you folks have to agree.

I grew up listening to CD101.9 and miss it very very much. I hope this comes to fruition as my mother and I would definitely be listening to the radio more often!

Would love to see the station back on the airways. You can only listen to Smooth jazz on a Philadelphia station going down the NJ Turnpike. Just don't be boring and predictable like the old station became.

Cool Jazz is the only Jazz I dig.
It is romantic. Please bring it back or lead me to another NY station that has it by any other name.

i remember the nyc jazz station before cd101.9. it was wrvr 106.7 fm.
they did play stevie wonder, marvin gaye and even earth wind and fire. but the played"the jazz sounding songs.but how they stood out was, they educated, informed and entertained you by playing more than one song from a album and songs from previous albums where you wanted to go out and buy. you never heard the same song more than 2 or 3 times every other hours or in one day.now you have hd and satellite radio and itunes, spotify and others and they can get predictible, stale and boring that's another reason why i go on youtube.they even had one day for listener's to call in (thursday) an all day saturday they played what was requested from thursday. everyday at midnight, they played a new album every song and even had the artist in the studio to tell how they came about making the album and writing each song and background information on who played on the album. it connected you to the people involved in the process. this was all before the internet which now helps us stay connected skype for example and smartphones and facebook

Oh, will you please bring back CD 101.9? It was an amazing station that truly helped me relax. I listened to it night and day and then it was gone. Shame on them, NYC has not been the same without it.

I moved to Maine from Long Island in 2004, and so never knew that the Station had switched formats. I have never looked back since relocating... I love it here - but the one thing that I will admit that I do miss bunches is the sophistication and variety offered in radio in New York (and NYC). I hope for everyone's sake there that they do bring back CD101.9 exactly as it was. It was simply epic.

I don't understand why the old smooth jazz station went off the air. The selections from 101.9 could be heard all over on TV shows and in commercials so you now the music was popular. It made for great background music and to me it really captured the heart and soul of New York. I truly miss it and would be willing to bet that if it ever came back it would be popular once a again. It was the perfect in-between for anyone seeking something to savor a glass of wine and relax to. I can't believe the top jazz musicians of the day didn't get together and keep the station going. It's New York for Chrissake! The very sight of the skyline while riding the Staten Island ferry cries out that CD101.9 sound.

I was personally offended by the disappearance of CD101.9, and couldn’t understand why the musicians whose music was so highly regarded and featured on the station did not band together to stop it, or at least try by alerting the public beforehand. Trust and believe, had they done that, a mass demonstration would have taken place. I don’t even bother listening to the radio anymore – I just listen to my jazz cd’s; the very ones that I purchased as a result of listening to CD101.9 – and I have over 100. It was more than a radio station – it was a learning experience. It’s been 4yrs and counting since CD101.9 was taken from us loyal listeners and we’re still waiting for its return. Not a lousy copycat station but the very same station, dial location/name, and hosts. No half-baked substitution will do.

I loved CD 101.9. The relaxing smooth jazz was a mainstay in my home and car radios and I really miss it. My beloved late stepfather introduced the station to me and I have enjoyed right up until it was taken off the air. Please bring this wonderful jazz station back to New York!

I was born and raised in New York City and grow up listening to Jazz Music. I was very hurt when CD 101.9 went off the air. Is there anything that we the dedicated listeners can do to bring this outstanding radio station back?????

The graetest area in US, the Tri-state NY, NJ and CT does not have a smooth Jazz station. We need CD101.9 back in this area, please bring it back ASAP

Just a follow-up to my previous posting. CD101.9 have apparently moved to Maine. No, not really - but I tuned into 93.7 FM ("The Wave") here in Down East Maine and was shocked to hear they have apparently altered formats. Listening to the "Smooth Jazz Top 20" at the moment. I close my eyes and it sounds incredibly like the o l d CD101.9 in New York. Expected Pat Prescott to introduce the next song at any moment. Point is - hang in there, New York. If it can happen here - it can happen there. :)

The day you guys left, was one sad day for me. Yes I know, I have my Jazz CD collections & all but, w/out you guys, I wouldn't have known & better understand what smooth jazz is...& I do mean the literal word SMOOTH JAZZ.

During those 10 yrs, when I wake up every morning to go to work, it's you guys @CD101.9 that gets me into a groove. Heck! Even my alarm is set to your station to wake me up to a good mood. & likewise when I get back home from a hard days work/workout.
Your station was a blessing in those 10 yrs, which is why it felt like a good chunk of my life was taken from me when you guys left.
I wanna thank you guys @101.9 for being part of my life for a smooth riding decade.
W/ that said, we need you guys back in NYC...as in PRONTO!!!

Hope to see you folks again...It's the place to be & where you guys belong.
God bless CD101.9...

Did we really need another rock station in New York?

I live in Kingston, N.Y. which is near Woodstock. We do not have any smooth jazz up here. When conditions were right it was a great treat to be able to pick up CD 101.9 on the radio all the way up here. From time to time we hit the "City" and in fact recently (late Aug. 2013) while driving around Manhattan I was so TOTALLY amazed that there wasn't one good radio station in the whole "City". How could such a big city not have even one good radio station. Smooth Jazz among other things is the sound of the city regardless of where that city may be. 101.9 bring it on!!!

so far the only decent smooth jazz has been online at skyfm smooth jazz 24/7, but I really miss CD101.9. It was even played in a lot of restaurants on Long Island. really miss it, and the demand is high for a return. I don't get it.

My mom used to listen to CD101.9 all the time and it was a mainstay in our house and in her car stereo as she used to pick me up and drop me off.

I still remember all those old instrumentals of easy jazzy listening songs where there was only maybe a saxophone and backing track with some singers singing one or two words over and over again like:

*music*, TOO HOT *music*, TOO HOT

and

*music*, LOVELY DAY *music*, LOVELY DAY

Honestly, it was weird.

And I remember my mom blasting that music in the car taking me to school and my incoming classmates would hear it.

They would ask me if I listened to rock or hip-hop or something else and I said no "I'll be cooooool with CD101.9"

Then they proceeded to beat me up.

So in all honesty, I hate "Smooth Jazz" with a fiery passion. It's like REAL JAZZ and adult contemporary had a baby with a chromosome missing.

Why not listen to Jazz Greats like the Marsalis Brothers or Tito Puente or Miles Davis or Nina Simone or Dizzy Gillespie? CD101.9 WAS NOT A JAZZ STATION!

The REAL Jazz was on the AM Dial with other REAL music such as Classical. Every other song on that station was freaking Kenny G.
I bet for every time you had to hear his sax there was a black musician that never got the time of day. BULLCOCKY!

I beg you, please bring back CD101.9. Every song was a winner. One of my favorite segments was New Age New York at 10:00 on Sunday nights. Ever since CD101.9 left the air I have not listened to the radio (nothing else is worth listening to), I have listed to my iPod with all my favorites downloaded from the smooth jazz days

What is soo wrong with the biggest city in the world, that it cannot maintain a smooth jazz station like CD 201.9??? California, Arizona, Washington State, Oregon all have smooth jazz stations. This is why Jazz artists hardly ever come to play in a city that could care less about them. SHAME ON YOU, NEW YORK!

I loved CD 101.9 and then it was gone. Hopefully it will come back till then I listen to watercolors.

My former coworker introduced me to CD101. I then became an avid listener. The melodies coming from the radio 📻 transform my mind 🎶 and spirit into a peaceful place. I truly miss the station but there are other options for listening to jazz currently.
