Lemon Bucket Orkestra are Toronto’s original guerrilla-folk party-punk massive. The multi-award-winning ensemble has been heralded as a groundbreaking, genre-bending phenomenon by media and fans alike, and over the past 8 years have performed all over the world from WOMAD in New Zealand and Pohoda in Slovakia, to Festival D’Été in Québec City, and Luminato in Toronto. The Guardian proclaimed that their performances are “gorgeously sung and passionately played” and The New York Times declared them “charismatic…handsome and ambitious.”

Equal parts exhilarating precision and reckless abandon, LBO’s live shows are a truly immersive experience – ranging from the ecstatic to the cathartic and all points in between – and they have expertly captured that unique blend of energy and emotion on their new album If I Had The Strength. Released worldwide on August 10th via a new deal with Six Degrees Records.

The band will be bringing the new material and their notoriously engaging live show out on an 11 date US release tour starting September 14th (see below for a complete list tour dates). Two years in the making, the new album once again draws its repertoire and inspiration from a myriad of folk traditions across Eastern Europe. But unlike their two previous albums (2012’s Lume, Lume and 2015’s Moorka), which were both just collections of individual, unrelated songs, IIHTS explores an overarching narrative through line, to tell a much bigger story. “This is an album about coming home, about never being the same, about the parts of ourselves we lose, the parts we gain, and about the prisons we inhabit or that inhabit us,” says Lemon Bucket Orkestra ringleader, Mark Marczyk.

With IIHTS, the increasingly dynamic and theatrical group have created a song cycle inspired by a century old Slavic prison ballad that tells the story of a young rebel coming home after laying it all on the line. The work draws emotional weight from the band’s personal experiences with the Ukraine-Russia conflict, but it also highlights the dozen strong ensemble’s party-punk roots and attitude, developed and honed since their formative days busking on the streets of Toronto. “We start in a musty train car overlooking the fields and valleys of our youth through permanently smudged windows, reflecting on the life that once was and wondering how we can face our mothers, with the horrifying fact that we will never be the beloved boys or girls we once were,” Marczyk says, expanding on the album’s conceptual theme. “Then, with a sudden jolt we are transported to the memory of what led us to this moment and we’re sprinting for dear life in a struggle to keep ahead of our past selves. The whole album navigates between the shaky train car and a series of flashbacks – in the language of eastern European folklore – the main site of resistance and celebration for the Lemon Bucket Orkestra for the better part of the past decade.”

Documenting Lemon Bucket Orkestra at the height of its musical powers, the new album also features a compelling list of special guests; from beloved Canadian soprano, Measha Brueggergosman, to Montreal-based Latino rapper, Boogat, to a triumphant-yet-tragic 60 strong reading of the late Adrienne Cooper’s Sholem by the mighty Choir!Choir!Choir! Weaving in and out of the prison ballad theme, the work takes listeners on an emotional journey exploring trauma and tragedy through the lens of musical exploration and communal celebration.

Lemon Bucket Orkestra has been wowing international audiences for close to a decade now, bringing their unstoppable and infectious musical mayhem to stages and streets far and wide. Voted Toronto’s Best Live Band by the readers of NOW Magazine, the band’s previous album, Moorka, took home a 2015 Canadian Folk Music Award for World Group of the Year, and was nominated for a 2016 JUNO award for World Music Album of the Year. The band is best known for its raucous parties, impromptu street performances and legendary live shows. But in the last year, they have also made a mark with their powerful and award winning ‘guerrilla folk opera,’ Counting Sheep (which features the entire band as the cast). The unique theatre experience has already played for enthusiastic audiences in Canada, Scotland, Ireland, the UK, Germany and the US (where it has run in Berkeley, Stanford and NYC) and will be staged again at the Vault Festival in the UK in early 2019.

“The album is a statement of resistance and celebration,” Marczyk concludes. “We’re guerrilla-folk party punks both imprisoned and liberated by eastern European folklore. The title track (borrowed from the late great Adrienne Cooper) says it all: ‘If I had the strength, I would run in the streets – I would scream PEACE! PEACE! PEACE!’ This album records the process of gathering that strength and the obstacles that we encounter along the way.”

The pioneering Afro-Peruvian sound system NOVALIMA celebrates their 15th anniversary with Ch’usay, a new release on Brooklyn’s Wonderwheel Recordings, an international tour launching in July.

From their humble start, file-sharing musical ideas and producing their first album in separate countries during the dawn of the internet, Novalima is now a live musical force revered worldwide for breaking boundaries and uniting seemingly irreconcilable genres, communities, and generations. They have created an inspiring movement and revolutionized the music scene in their native Peru by bridging a longstanding divide between the mainstream and the minority Afro-Peruvian community, who have struggled against discrimination and cultural dissolution for generations.

Over the last two years, Novalima created their newest offering, Ch’usay to be released September 14th on Wonderwheel Recording. The album's name (internal voyage in Quechua, the language of the Incas) signals Novalima's latest musical exploration, ancient sounds and instruments from the Andes and the Amazons. This time around, Novalima goes one step further to enrich their sound by collaborating with new generations of local artists from the peruvian music scene. The album also has offerings from global artists such as Esteban Copete (Colombian Marimba master) and Kumar (Cuban rapper based in Barcelona).

The debut single, named after the album, (to be released on July 13th) is the perfect example ofthe the new sonic voyage in which Novalima has embarked. Ch’usay, a futuristic huayno dub, includes astonishing vocal collaborations by andean soprano Sylvia Falcon and pioneer Quechua rapper Liberato Kani.

The 15th Anniversary celebrations will also include a limited edition release of Novalima's first three albums Afro, Coba Coba and Karimba, on color vinyl for the first time, followed by an international tour through Europe and North America.

Novalima has garnered worldwide critical acclaim from mainstream (NPR, UK Guardian, Wall Street Journal, La Presse, Metro, Billboard) and underground media (Giant Step, Remezcla, Nat Geo) alike, delivered legendary performances around the world at festivals such as Roskilde, WOMAD, Pirineos Sur, NYC Central Park, Montreal Jazz Festival and Chicago’s Millennium Park, earned a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Album, and were featured in cult filmmaker Robert Rodriguez’s hit Mexploitation movie Machete.

'Fragile' from SAM RAVENNA mixes vintage Motown flavored soul music, neo-soul funk beats, avant-guard Jazz and psychedelic dub

Sam Ravenna’s sophomore release, “Fragile”, picks up where his self-titled EP leaves off, and dives deeper into what drives Ravenna as an artist. From vintage Motown flavored soul music, neo-soul funk beats, yacht rock, to experimental avant-guard Jazz and psychedelic dub, ‘Fragile’ simultaneously throws you back to the past, and plunges you deep into the future. To record the album, Sam and his Lake Tahoe based band set up an extensive studio at the house of drummer and sound engineer, John Riley. They laid the foundation for a 14 track album, all while being inspired by the views of a massive alpine lake just outside the window.

Ravenna hits the road this fall with New Orleans soul-man Eric Lindell, opening the tour solo and lending bass and vocals to Lindell’s band. Ravenna’s solo show allows a place for the root of his songs to come through, and gives the listener a more intimate experience of his voice and message.

STREAMING Featuring Pianist/Composer RAN BLAKE & Vocalist CHRISTINE CORREA

Brooklyn-based Red Piano Records is proud to announce the release of STREAMING from pianist/composer Ran Blake and vocalist Christine Correa.  This recording is the latest yield from Blake and Correa's remarkable friendship and superlative musical collaboration that has thrived for over three decades.

Blake and Correa are a united force in presenting this material. There exists between these two singular and incomparable artists an uncanny, inventive rapport, an aura of inevitability that emboldens and challenges their audiences' sonic imaginations. Together they capture an intensity in their interpretation of "No More", "Don't Explain" and "Lonely Woman", lightness and frivolity in "Bebopper" and "Ah El Novio", and introspection as in the three solo piano versions of George Russell's "Stratusphunk", and the vocal solo on "Wende".

According to Larry Livingston from the Thornton School of Music in Los Angeles, Blake, "is in a category all his own. He plays from the inside out, owes no absolute allegiance to a particular style or approach, and makes an art of restraint." Mumbai-born and New York based Correa sings with her own singular style and timbre. Her voice has been described as, "controlled, confident, and jazz inflected...".    

The creative imprints of their long-enduring and endlessly fascinating musical journey are nowhere more evident than in their two remarkable tribute CD's celebrating the contributions to the jazz canon of the late Abbey Lincoln, and on their current recording, "Streaming".

The material on "Streaming" draws from diverse sources including selections from the American Songbook, classic jazz compositions, traditional Sephardic folk pieces, Brazilian songs and original compositions. What they have in common is that they all are part of the Third Stream repertoire and included in Blake's groundbreaking concept of a system of artistic development. For the past 50 years he has been sharing his ideas with young musicians at New England Conservatory and beyond. This wide-ranging repertoire has become a de facto lingua franca with these songs serving as portals for musical communication, interaction and self-discovery. The term streaming refers to a process; a way of finding one's own artistic path.

In his book, "Primacy of the Ear", Blake states, "the type of introspection we are concerned with encourages you to examine things that are already a part of you - the style that is already your own, your feeling of heritage or nationality, a passion for a certain historical time period or geographical region, an intellectual bent and/or an emotional need to express. It could be your sense of fashion, or a deep commitment to a social/political movement. It can be as specific as one color you like to wear, and as broad as your sense of reality or view of life. What the critic within each of us tells us about our playing and composition is important. It is a start. But if we are to break through to the inner fires of creation, it will be the ear that will lead us to greater heat and finer focus."

In a career that now spans five decades, pianist Ran Blake has created a unique niche in improvised music as an artist and educator. With a characteristic mix of spontaneous solos, modern classical tonalities, the great American blues and gospel traditions and themes from classic Film Noir, Blake's singular sound has earned him a dedicated following around the world. In the tradition of two of his idols, Ellington and Monk, Blake has incorporated and synthesized several otherwise divergent styles and influences into a single innovative and cohesive style of his own, ranking him among the geniuses of the genre. Ran Blake is a recipient of the MacArthur "Genius" grant. He was the founder and long-time chairperson of the Third Stream Department (currently called Contemporary Improvisation Department) at the New England Conservatory in Boston, MA.

Christine Correa, originally from Bombay, India, has been involved in a variety of improvisational contexts and is currently on the faculty of The Louis Armstrong Jazz Performance Program at Columbia University in New York City.  She has been widely recognized as a leading interpreter of the works of a range of modern American and European poets as set to music by some of today's most innovative jazz composers, such as Frank Carlberg, Nicholas Urie, Sam Sadigursky and Steve Grover, among others. Correa has also recorded and/or performed with artists such as Steve Lacy and John LaPorta and appeared at numerous festivals, concert halls and clubs in the US, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, South America and India.  Correa is a long-time resident of Brooklyn, NY.

Grammy nominated and award-winning saxophonist BEN WENDEL releases THE SEASONS

In 2015, Grammy nominated and award-winning saxophonist, bassoonist, composer Ben Wendel released a music-video art project entitled The Seasons - inspired by a set of twelve piano pieces written and released each month by one of his favorite classical composers, Tchaikovsky, in 1876. Wendel's modern take on the idea was to compose and release twelve original jazz chamber duets in video format with modern luminaries such as Joshua Redman, Aaron Parks, Gilad Hekselman, Eric Harland, Matt Brewer, Julian Lage, Ambrose Akinmusire,among others. "The idea and goal of The Seasons was a simple one: 12 original pieces dedicated to 12 musicians I deeply admire, released over 12 months via YouTube. Though this ended up being one of the most challenging and complex projects I've ever attempted, it also turned out to be one of the most rewarding," says Wendel.

Wendel continues, "the reception was positive and fascinating!" Although Wendel never played the music live nor released it as a CD, it was nominated as one of the best 'albums' of the year by The New York Times and featured on NPR's All Things Considered, and The CBC. A few years passed, he was further inspired by Lee Krasner's work titled The Seasons (on permanent display at The Whitney Museum), and in 2018 was given the incredible opportunity to lead his own group at the famed Village Vanguard in New York. "I thought this was the perfect moment to take The Seasons project into the next phase. I put together a quintet made up of artists from the original video series and the music was transformed from the intimate setting of duos to something much grander in the hands of these master musicians," states Wendel.

The uniqueness of this recording, and the upcoming tour dates, is that this music was never played live or released as a traditional album. So this is the premiere of an exciting new chapter in The Seasons project. "I couldn't be more grateful and excited", says Wendel. 

The Seasons Band is comprised of some of the most compelling musicians on the scene, and dear friends, Aaron Parks (piano), Gilad Hekselman (guitar), Matt Brewer (bass) and Eric Harland (drums). The Seasons is Wendel's follow-up recording to the critically acclaimed What We Bring (on Motema, September 2016).

More on Ben Wendel: GRAMMY-nominated saxophonist Ben Wendel, born in Vancouver, Canada, raised in Los Angeles, and currently living in Brooklyn, continues to lead the way in audience engagement via social media and YouTube with his latest video series, "Standards With Friends" (featuring sessions with Mike Moreno, Jonathan Blake, Justin Brown, Larry Goldings, and others). Wendel has enjoyed a varied career as a performer, composer and producer, including tours with artists such as Ignacio Berroa, Tigran Hamasyan, Antonio Sanchez, Gerald Clayton, Eric Harland, Taylor Eigsti, Snoop Dogg and the artist formerly known as Prince. Wendel is also a founding member of the GRAMMY-nominated group Kneebody, whom he will be touring with this September, performing music from Anti-Hero (on Motema), including the single, "How High" (featuring Inara George).

As a composer, he has received an ASCAP Jazz Composer Award, the 2008, 2011 and 2017 Chamber Music America "New Works Grant" and most recently was awarded the Victor Lynch-Staunton award and the Concept to Realization grant by the Canada Council For The Arts. He also co-wrote the score for John Krasinski's adaptation of David Foster Wallace's, Brief Interviews With Hideous Men.

Wendel's recent work includes producing and playing in jazz and many other genres, including the GRAMMY-nominated album "Life Forum" for pianist Gerald Clayton on Concord Records, the new Kneedelus album (Kneebody + Daedelus), released on Brainfeeder and given a rave 8.0 review from Pitchfork, appearing on Julia Holter's new film score, and collaborating with her on a new non-jazz album he is co-creating with Daedelus (the album will feature artists such as Terrace Martin, Knower and Mark Guiliana), producing an album for Folk/Americana artist Darryl Holter (a BMI Woody Guthrie Fellowship Recipient), playing on Jimmy Chamberlin's (drummer from Smashing Pumpkins) new instrumental album, and producing live concerts at the Broad Stage in Santa Monica, CA from 2008-2015, with the help of Quincy Jones and his production team. He also recently

worked with conductor Kent Nagano in producing a series of concerts for the Festspiel Plus in Munich, Germany.    

Wendel has recorded for Sunnyside Records, Concord Records and Brainfeeder, including Simple Song (2009) and Frame (2012), a duo project with French-American pianist Dan Tepfer entitled Small Constructions (2013) and multiple Kneebody albums. Wendel's critically acclaimed album What We Bring was released in the Fall of 2016 on Motema Music, and is now followed up by The Seasons, available October 12, 2018.

New Music Releases: Candi Station, Tamia, The Four Tops

Candi Staton - Unstoppable

Unstoppable is both a celebration of Staton's legacy and a bold step forward, with a sound that's funky and contemporary, but still steeped in the Southern soul and blues of her Alabama roots. Featuring an ace rhythm section made up of Staton's sons, bassist Marcel Williams and drummer Marcus Williams (Isaac Hayes, Pointer Sisters), the album reunites the singer with producer Mark Nevers (Lambchop), who helmed His Hands (2006) and Who's Hurting Now (2009), the critically acclaimed albums for London label Honest Jon's that reestablished Staton as a force to be reckoned with. But where those albums showcased Staton's skills as an interpreter of bluesy ballads, Unstoppable which Marcus Williams co-produced with Nevers is a more celebratory, uptempo set. 'It's my kind of music,' she says proudly. 'It's more of a happy record, a dancing record.'

Tamia - Passion Like Fire

Every so often, an unforgettable voice comes along. One possessed by a deep-rooted passion that subtly powers a soulful, silky sound that will never go out of style. The voice in question: Tamia. Three years after releasing her No. 1-debuting R&B album Love Life, Tamia is back with the sizzling single “Leave It Smokin’.” Already a No.1 hit at urban AC after a short time on the chart, “Leave It Smokin’” sets the alarm for Passion Like Fire, Tamia’s seventh studio album. The album in turn also marks another momentous occasion: the 20th anniversary of Tamia’s critically acclaimed, selftitled 1998 debut album. The album initiated a string of hits that the six-time Grammy® Award nominee has steadily spun, including “You Put a Move on My Heart,” and “Missing You” with Brandy, Gladys Knight and Chaka Khan. The tracks comprising Passion Like Fire are no exception. The aforementioned “Leave it Smokin’” reunited Tamia with hit maker Salaam Remi (Amy Winehouse, Jazmine Sullivan, Miguel), who also produced the Grammy® Award-nominated title track from the singer’s 2012 album Beautiful Surprise. In addition to Remi, Tamia reteamed with two more previous collaborators, Lil Ronnie (Tamia’s Love Life album, Mary J. Blige) and Grammy® Award winner Shep Crawford (Tamia’s Hot 100 top 10 hit “Stranger in My House,” Deborah Cox). Tamia also worked for the first time with Latin producer Andres Torres (Marc Anthony), who contributed the big ballad “Deeper.” Sequenced to mirror the various stages of a relationship, Passion Like Fire’s additional track standouts include the vibey, Sade-ish “Better,” mid-tempo ballad “Stay” and potential 2018 wedding song “Today I Do.”

The Four Tops - The Complete ABC/Dunhill Singles

With 47 Pop hits and 52 R&B hits to their credit spanning nearly 25 years of recordings, The Four Tops are one of the greatest vocal groups in the history of pop music, hands down. But a big chunk of their hits, the ones they recorded for the ABC/Dunhill label, have been almost entirely unavailable in the CD era. This 2-CD collection from Real Gone Music answers the prayers of soul fans worldwide by presenting, for the first time ever on CD, all 33 rare single sides that the Tops recorded for the ABC/Dunhill label from 1972 through 1978. Just how rare are these tracks? We’ll get into that in a sec; but first, a little history. Though The Four Tops (Renaldo “Obie” Benson, Abdul “Duke” Fakir, Lawrence Payton, and lead singer Levi Stubbs) had dominated the charts with their classic recordings for Motown in the ‘60s, when the label decided in 1972 to move to Los Angeles, the group, like many of their celebrated label-mates, felt it was time for a change. They thus signed with ABC Records’ Dunhill imprint and hooked up with producer Steve Barri (The Grass Roots) and songwriters Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter, who re-created their classic Motown sound on Top Ten hits like “Keeper of the Castle” and “Ain’t No Woman (Like the One I’ve Got).” In all, The Tops recorded 17 A-sides (including a Spanish-language version of “Keeper of the Castle”) for ABC/Dunhill during their six years on the label, notching a total of 11 Billboard Pop hits and 15 R&B hits, but those original hit singles (and their even rarer B-sides) have been almost impossible to find on CD. Why? Well, in a sad tale we’ve told before on our previous Dunhill singles collections featuring The Mamas and The Papas, Steppenwolf, and The Grass Roots, legend has it that label head Jay Lasker threw out the tapes, deeming them worthless. A few singles—those identical to the album versions—have leaked out on CD, but here is the breakdown: of the 33 tracks (the seven earliest mono, the rest stereo), 27 have never been available on CD in their correct single versions, and 13 songs have never appeared on CD in any version! Like on our previous collections, the “Dunhill dream reissue team” of engineer Aaron Kannowski, liner note writer/A&R man Ed Osborne, and co-producer Gordon Anderson is at the helm for this release; Osborne’s notes (which are always a fun, informative read) feature quotes from original writers/co-producers Steve Barri and Dennis Lambert, with great photos to boot. Special notice must also be given to Aaron Kannowski, who once again went to the ends of the earth to track down sources for this collection. It’s the missing chapter in the career of one of the greatest vocal groups of all time…a very, very proud addition to our Real Gone Music roster and a Four Tops collection you’re gonna want to spin again and again!

Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr. Return to Los Angeles' Catalina Jazz Club August 31-September 2

Music icons Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr., the original lead vocalists of the internationally acclaimed music group The 5th Dimension, bring back their trademark "champagne soul" sound to the Catalina Jazz Club (6725 W Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles, CA  90028), starring in "Up, Up and Away" on Labor Day weekend. The husband and wife duo are scheduled to perform Friday, August 31st through Sunday, September 2nd.

New Music Releases: Luciana Souza, Rolf Kühn, Shaun Martin

Luciana Souza – Book Of Longing

Marvelous work from Luciana Souza – a very spare set that has the vocalist just working with Chico Pinheiro on guitar and Scott Colley on bass – which makes for a moody approach that really opens up her voice! Luciana has always been a standout singer, but this time around, we find ourselves not only loving her even more than before – but also ranking her right up there with some of our favorite blue-toned singers from both the French and Brazilian scenes from many years back – particularly in the way that she can evoke the darker corners of melancholy, but without ever falling in too deeply to get lost. All tunes are originals, and very beautiful – with titles that include "Paris", "A Life", "We Grow Accustomed To The Dark", "The Book", "Night Song", "Alms", and "Daybreak".  ~ Dusty Groove

Rolf Kühn – Yellow + Blue

Quiescence and awakening. Tradition and innovation. Body and soul. Rolf Kühn finds such opposing forces attractive. With his new album Yellow + Blue, the 88-year-old clarinetist once again improvises and swings his way through uncharted musical territory. Europes greatest clarinetist and free spirit (Jazzthetik) plays ballads and legendary love songs on his new MPS album. In so doing, he delivers new meaning and a fresh sound to the pieces. A sentimental look back is simply not his thing. Together with his new quartet of pianist Frank Chastenier, bassist Lisa Wulff, and percussionist Tupac Mantilla, Kühn contrasts his sensitive side with his unbridled desire to experiment. Ive chosen some of my favorite ballads for this album. These pieces have nothing to do with any sort of trend. For me, they are poignant and beautiful; they are simply timeless, says Kühn. I found it especially appealing to combine these particular choices with my latest compositions. The album opens with Both Sides Now, a classic by Joni Mitchell. Kühn liked the poetic text, and says that, Somehow, in life there are always two sides, but its best when they enrich each other and can smoothly merge in order to create something new. One of five new compositions, the title song Yellow + Blue encapsulates the two perspectives: the flamboyant, the impulsively vibrant yellow next to the soft, sensitive, warm bluesy-blue tonal color. In turn, a new musical color is created out of the contrast.

Shaun Martin - Focus

Beautifully soulful work from pianist Shaun Martin – a player who can mix both lyrical sense of flow and strong attack on the keys – all within the confines of a well-balanced trio that grooves strongly at all three corners of the triangle! Shaun's wonderfully deft on the keys – mixing sharpness and swing with the strength of an old school master – but the group's also got a very contemporary sense of rhythm, too – thanks to strong work from Jamil Byrom on drums and AJ Brown on bass – both players who've clearly absorbed some of the 21st century changes in piano trio modes, but are also able to bring them back to a more straightforward mode. Titles include a great version of the Joe Henderson tune "Recorda Me" – plus "Festina Lente", "Triad", "Ms Genell", and "Soundcheck & Whatnots".  ~  Dusty Groove

Pianist Omar Sosa and violinist-vocalist Yilian Cañizares have come together to create Aguas, a beautiful and very personal album. Featuring their compatriot, percussionist Inor Sotolongo, Aguas reflects the perspectives of two generations of Cuban artists living outside their homeland, interpreting their roots and traditions in subtle and unique ways. Songs range from the poignant to the exuberant, and are expressive of the exceptional musical chemistry, poetic sensibilities, and originality of the artists.

We can't get enough of this group – and their unique piano-less style has a different approach to spiritual jazz modes than you might ear from another combo – especially since the drums and percussion are often used in ways that are complicated, but never to free to lose the groove of the tunes! As on other records, there's a fantastic balance here between the tenor work of Idris Rahman, the bass of Leon Brichard, the drums of Emre Ramazanoglu, and percussion of Satin Singh – hard to describe in the way these guys find a very unique, personal space of expression – while still soaring in a way that would be right at home alongside the legacy of Impulse or Strata East. Titles include "Djinn", "Meditation", "Perplexity", "Scatter", "Retreat", and "Incantation". ~ Dusty Groove

Wildflower - Wildflower

Fantastic sounds from this offshoot of the Ill Considered group – a freewheeling trio that features Idris Rahman on saxes and flute, Leon Brichard on bass, and Tom Skinner on drums – a combo that comes together in a very spiritual way! The bass and drums often build up cyclical rhythms in this brooding sort of style – which then allows Rahman to really open up and express himself on the solos – often moving in relatively free, open territory – but still held tightly to the planet by the rhythms! The approach is maybe in the more spiritual side of loft jazz territory – and titles include "Flute Song", "Hogol", "Other Worlds", "Long Way Home", and "Where The Earth Meets The Sky". “StringShot – Blues and Latin” is a new collaboration of three artists: Roy Rogers(slide guitar/vocal), Badi Assad (guitar/vocal) and Carlos Reyes (violin/stringed harp).

These three artists have joined together to form a musical “tour-de-force”, blending their artistry and talents to create a new synthesis of Blues and Latin music. This unique combination of musicians – all virtuosos in their own right – features an amazing interplay and repertoire that promises to dazzle audiences!

Roy Rogers is one of the world’s great slide guitarists – an 8 time Grammy-nominated producer and recording artist – renowned for his live performances around the world as well as his collaborations with John Lee Hooker, Bonnie Raitt and Ray Manzarek, among others.

Badi Assad (from Brazil) was ranked by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the world’s great guitarists. Classically trained, she has received numerous international awards in her prolific career. As a vocalist and percussionist, she is a true innovator, not only in technique but in performance. She has appeared in a variety of musical settings – from classical concerts with The Assad Brothers to jazz festivals with Pat Metheny and Larry Coryell.

Carlos Reyes is well known for his supreme virtuosity, not only on the violin but on the

Paraguayan stringed harp. Classically trained as well, he has performed in many diverse genres of music worldwide – with his own band, in symphonies and featured with such artists as Steve Miller and Arturo Sandoval.

Scott Kinsey has also played with the biggest names in jazz music. Mr. Kinsey is, in fact, the musical director of the Zawinul Legacy Band founded by Joe's eldest son, Tony Zawinul. Over the years, Scott has worked with Matthew Garrison, Alphonso Johnson, John Scofield, Dennis Chambers, Joe Zawinul, John McLaughlin, Peter Erskine, Mike Stern Dave Weckl, Bill Evans, Jimmy Herring, Victor Wooten, John Patitucci among others.

Hungarian drummer Gergö Borlai began playing at age 3 and has appeared on more than 300 albums. Since 2012, Mr. Borlai is a professor at the Liceu Academy/Jazz Departement in Barcelona and has received two lifetime achievement awards, the Golden Drumstick Prize and the Artisjus Lifetime Achievement Award in Hungary. He has played with greats such as Al DiMeola and Hiram Bullock.

​ARC Trio opens with "Owosso" as Mr. Borlai places the listener under his spell with a rhythmic trance-like groove. Slowly, Mr. Haslip enters with his hypnotic response in lock-step with Scott Kinsey's subtle assurance on keys. When asked about Arc Trio, Mr. Haslip says, "I wrote music that deals with deeper emotional experiences...searching for knowledge and opening my awareness of a world in need". Certainly, a song like "Owosso" fits this bill and is timely in these contentious times.

​The dynamic flow of ARC Trio leads followers skillfully to track four, "Viera", a song about Mr. Haslip's mother. At this point, the core trio makes introduction to guests that need no introduction. The soulful strength of Vinnie Colaiuta (Frank Zappa, Sting, Herbie Hancock, Jeff Beck, many others) on drums and Latin fusion hero Steve Tavaglione (Jorge Strunz, Eduardo Del Barrio, Dave Weckl, Sly & The Family Stone, Steve Winwood) on flute. This powerful tribute starts with distinct Latin rhythm and brings in Mr. Tavaglione' soaring injections. It is chaotic at first before locking in tightly and fusing genres and styles. The interplay of flute and keyboard melody is masterful on the a palette of constantly evolving drum and bass improvisation.

ARC Trio is the biggest sound you will hear this year. The fusion of gratifying sounds, feels and styles leaves one satisfied yet craving more. When asked about live performances relating to this masterpiece, Jimmy Haslip exclaimed without hesitation, "ROCK THE HOUSE". 

One Note At a Time Soundtrack from Award-Winning Documentary Focuses on Musicians Who Returned to New Orleans In the Aftermath of Hurricane Katrina

Louisiana Red Hot Records has announced the release of the soundtrack from the multi-award-winning documentary “One Note At a Time.” The feature film focuses on musicians who return to New Orleans after the destruction of Hurricane Katrina to keep the music alive and the New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic that keeps them alive. 

  

Some of these world renowned and legendary artists are Grammy winners Dr. John and “the Soul Queen of New Orleans” Irma Thomas, Damion and Charmaine Neville, British jazz drummer Barry Martyn, jazz trumpeter Kermit Ruffins, Al “Carnival Time” Johnson, Walter Payton, Jr., The Cliff Hines Quintet, Ben Jaffe of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and poet Shelton “Shakespear’ Alexander, to mention a few. The soundtrack score was written by British composer Ray Russell.

“One Note At a Time” was directed by British film maker Renee Edwards, whose father is a Crescent City resident. Filmed over the course of four years it also includes interviews with New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic & Assistance Foundation co-founders Johann Bultman and President and Director Bethany Bultman.

  

Live recordings from Snug Harbor, filmed during a Health Initiative Benefit for the Musicians’ Clinic on August 7, 2011 include Damion Neville and the Charmaine Neville Band’s version of “Papa Was A Rolling Stone.” Dr. John performing “Roscoe’s Song,” an improv tribute to Herman “Roscoe” Ernst, his drummer who had passed away earlier that year and “Down the Road.” Poet Shelton “Shakespear” Alexander’s “Second Lining,” was written expressly for the film.  “This Little Light of Mine,” the finale for that show, features Dr. John, Gaynielle Neville, Cyril Neville, Amasi Miller, Shannon Powell, Jesse Boyd, Paul Pattan and Donald Harrison, Jr.

  

Additional tracks include the Hot 8 Brass Band’s “Let Me Do My Thing,” “Higher” by Felice Guimont, “Slip Away” by Chip Wilson and Jesse Moore, “Ray Nagin” by the To Be Continued Brass Band, Bud Tower’s “Please Don’t Take Me Home,” written for the Musicians’ Clinic benefit, and Ms. Pearl singing “Summertime,” live in the French Quarter. “Down By the Riverside” is sung by Barry Martyn and “Carnival Time” is an early version of Al “Carnival Time” Johnson’s classic hit. Additional tracks include the Cliff Hines Quintet’s “Tehran” and “Blue Monk” by Delfeayo Marsalis and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra.  Award-winning British composer Ray Russell’s tracks from the motion picture score include “From The Heart” and the “One Note At a Time” theme song.     

Since its first screening at the New Orleans Film Festival “One Note At a Time” has gone on to win a Gold Award at the 2017 Los Angeles Film Review Independent Film Awards, opened the Santa Barbara Jazz Redux festival in California, screened at Sync Up Cinema as part of New Orleans Jazz Fest and won Best Feature Documentary at the Studio City (California) International Film Festival. United Kingdom accolades include Best Feature Documentary at the Nottingham International Film Festival, screening at the Guild of British Film and Television Editors Festival and winning Best Feature Documentary, Best Score and Film of the Festival at the Oxford International Film Festival.

“One Note At a Time” is being released to coincide with Munro Film’s United Kingdom theatrical release, starting on August 24 in select cities. Some of these cities include Chichester, Manchester and London. The digital film release is slated for September 3, 2018. Plans are under way for a world wide release later this year.

 

PONCHO SANCHEZ TO HEADLINE FREE TUCSON DOWNTOWN JAZZ FIESTA ON MLK DAY 2019

The line-up for the 5th annual Tucson Jazz Festival, scheduled for Jan. 11-21, 2019, continues to take shape with the announcement of Poncho Sanchez headlining the free Downtown Jazz Fiesta on Monday, Jan. 21, 2019 (MLK Day). Last year the Jazz Fiesta drew more than 12,000 people downtown. Funding for the concert is provided, in part, by the Arizona Commission on the Arts and Rio Nuevo.

As the finale, the Downtown Jazz Fiesta will transform downtown Tucson into a concert destination with 30 bands performing in 5 venues including 2 outdoor stages on MLK Day, from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. In addition to live performances, the Downtown Jazz Fiesta will include beer gardens, food trucks featuring a variety of cuisines, art demonstrations, interactive experiences and the unique and eclectic bars and restaurants of downtown.

Poncho Sanchez is a Mexican American conguero, Latin jazz band leader, and salsa singer. In 2000, he and his ensemble won the Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album for their work on the Concord Picante album Latin Soul. Sanchez has performed with artists including Cal Tjader , Mongo Santamaría , Hugh Masekela , Clare Fischer and Tower of Power.

"This year, with the addition of Poncho Sanchez, we expect the Downtown Jazz Fiesta to continue to grow and we are anticipating more than 15,000 attendees," said Yvonne Ervin, founding Executive Director and current Artistic Director.

Tucson Jazz Festival organizers also announced that several recently added concerts will go on sale Friday, August 24: On Monday, Jan. 14, Kathleen Grace, an internationally recognized jazz vocalist, songwriter and educator, will be performing at Club Congress with pianist Larry Goldings. Grace, a Tucson native, appeared with Portugal the Man on the American Music Awards and will be featured on Jim James' (My Morning Jacket) solo 2018 album.

The UA Fred Fox School of Music Studio Jazz Ensemble with Terell Stafford will be at Crowder Hall on Tuesday, Jan. 15. Stafford, an acclaimed trumpet player and educator who is Director of Jazz Studies at Temple University, has been hailed as "one of the great players of our time, a fabulous trumpet player" by piano legend McCoy Tyner.

Saturday, Jan. 19 NEA Jazz Master Sheila Jordan and Cameron Brown will perform a jazz vocal and upright bass duo at the Temple of Music and Art. Jordan made history with her classic 1963 debut Portrait of Sheila, Blue Note record's first album by a vocalist.

The 11-day Tucson Jazz Festival, scheduled for Jan. 11-21, 2019, will also feature performances by Joey Alexander plus the Tucson Jazz Institute Ellington Band with special guest Terell Stafford, Bobby McFerrin, Asleep at the Wheel, Trombone Shorty, Pink Martini and the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, Special EXF with special guests Regina Carter and Eric Marienthal, Tucson Swings Brightly: The Music of Nelson Riddle featuring Ann Hampton Callaway, and an all-women double bill with the Magos Herrera Quartet and Jane Bunnett and Maqueque. Two of the shows are sponsored by the Tucson Desert Song Festival: Mr. McFerrin and the all-female show.

All shows are expected to sell out this year as ticket sales are currently far ahead of last year's numbers. Seven of nine shows sold out at the last Tucson Jazz Festival held in January 2018.
