“TO CARRY ON…” THE STORY OF LAURA NYRO

Mimi Cohen presents “To Carry On…” a one-woman tribute to the life and music of Laura Nyro. Mimi is a fixture in the New York Cabaret scene who studied with actress Julie Halston (Hairspray, Gypsy), singers Margaret Whiting and Chris Calloway (Cab Calloway’s daughter), and Second City founder, Paul Sills. The characters in the play are comprised of real people in and around Laura Nyro’s life, such as her parents and managers, David Geffen and Artie Mogull. The show runs from November 17-26 at the Cherry Pit Theatre in New York City. This Off-Broadway show is directed by Gretchen Cryer, who is best known for starring in and writing the book and lyrics for the 1978 Joseph Papp-produced “I’m Getting My Act Together and Taking It On The Road.”  Jeffrey Klitz, the conductor for Broadway’s “Guys And Dolls,” is the Musical Director.

2010 saw Laura Nyro nominated to the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame and inducted to the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame.  While the Bronx-born Laura Nyro did not experience huge commercial success, she was extremely influential.  She was managed by David Geffen, signed by Clive Davis, produced by Gamble & Huff and Gary Katz (Steely Dan). She recorded with Labelle and opened for Bob Dylan.  Her songs were covered by the 5th Dimension; Blood, Sweat & Tears; Peter Paul & Mary; Three Dog Night; and Barbra Streisand.  People such as Sandra Bernhard, Bette Midler, Todd Rundgren, Joni Mitchell, Suzanne Vega, and Jackson Browne call themselves fans of the music.  Laura recorded ten studio albums (one released posthumously) and six live albums. In 1969, three songs she wrote were in the Billboard Top Ten in the same week.  Laura Nyro died of ovarian cancer at the age of 49 in 1997 - the disease also claimed her mother’s life at that age. If you have never experienced the music of Laura Nyro I highly recommend that you purchase her albums – you’ll just love her sound.

WXJC-FM FLIPS FORMAT TO SMOOTH AC

Seems like several of the former Smooth Jazz radio stations in the U.S. are now switching over to Smooth Adult Contemporary (AC). Now word come to us that yet another station - WXJC-FM in Gainesville - Florida is flipping formats. After a dozen years as a traditional Smooth Jazz outlet, Asterisk Communications' WXJZ-FM in Gainesville moves to Broadcast Architecture's vocal-focused Smooth AC format. According to a press release, "It was our desire to freshen up our successful 12-year run of Smooth Jazz with new artists and more vocals in order to attract a younger, more mass-appeal audience," WXJZ-FM General Manager John Starr said. "Broadcast Architecture's Smooth AC is the logical choice." Braodcast Architecture President Allen Kepler said, "We are very excited to assist John, Bill Elliott, and their team on bringing the Smooth AC Network to Gainesville. With typical AC stations moving away from the softer approach, we know that there are many adults looking for a companion to help them relax and enjoy their day. The music mix offers a variety of styles, genres, and eras of music not found on other stations, and we see this to be a solid opportunity to deliver strong 25-54 PPM ratings." For those of you unfamiliar with the Smooth AC format – it’s about 75 percent vocals, with core artists including Sade, Michael Buble, Michael Jackson, and Seal. The rest of the music comes from such Smooth Jazz staples as Boney James, Dave Koz, Grover Washington, George Benson, Brian Culbertson and Chris Botti, among others.

NORMAN JOHNSON - IF TIME STOOD STILL

If Time Stood Still, the debut solo release from guitarist Norman Johnson on the Pacific Coast Jazz label, is an exquisite expression of music that has been waiting to happen. From sonic grooves reminiscent of Wes Montgomery and George Benson to the mysterious, sultry melodies that frame Johnson’s distinctive sound, this recording integrates the best of contemporary and traditional jazz. With over twenty recordings as a sideman, playing with highly respected musicians (Dave Brubeck, Jerry Bergonzi, Bill Mays, Harvie S., Phil Wilson and Steve Gadd) along with composing and recording music for corporate clients, this release puts Norman Johnson in the spotlight he truly deserves. “We’re excited to have the opportunity to represent the debut CD, If Time Stood Still, from such a talented and experienced artist,” says Donna Nichols, founder and president of Pacific Coast Jazz. “This CD is way overdue for Norman who is a high caliber musician and composer.” Nichols’ label has teamed up with publicist Joy Foster of SV Media and radio promoter Adam Leibovitz at ASL Music Media for access to international media buying and radio promotion. PRINCE TO TOUR WITH ESPERANZA SPALDING, MACEO PARKER, CASSANDRA WILSON, SHEILA E. & OTHERS

At New York's Apollo Theater last night, Prince has announced to a packed audience that he's planning a tour that will kick off "on a purple day" in December where he will be serving as Master of Ceremonies. He said the tour is "best described as what we've all been waiting for." He told his fans "The nights of entertainment will feature some of the best artists this country has to offer," Prince promised reporters. "They know what time it is. So come early and come often, because every time we play it's always something new. No two shows will be the same. I have a lot of hits. Bring your friends, bring your children, bring your own foot spray -- it's going to be funky!" Though no specific dates, cities or venues were announced, the shows are scheduled to kick off in December and will feature Prince playing a gold-plated Fender guitar that will be auctioned off at the end of the live run with proceeds beneftting the Harlem Children's Zone. Wearing gold-rimmed aviator sunglasses and a black turtleneck with his 21 Nights In London DVD flashing on a projector behind him, the legendary pop wunderkind announced the shows, titled "Welcome 2 America," which will feature funk, R&B and jazz artists including Maceo Parker, Janelle Monae, Cassandra Wilson, Sheila E., Lalah Hathaway, Mint Condition, Esperanza Spalding and famed funk outfit Larry Graham & Graham Central Station. The Minnesota native also confirmed that he and the New Power Generation would also perform nightly alongside featured acts. "I didn't want to talk too much but how many have seen 'Waiting for Superman,' " he asked before bringing out Harlem Children's Zone head Geoffrey Canada who also spoke briefly about how grateful he is Prince chose Harlem as the venue to announce the series. BET's President of Music Programming Stephen Hill, a long-time fan of 'The Purple One,' introduced Prince to the throngs of media outlets present at the press conference. A few months back, the network awarded Prince with a Lifetime Achievement award at the 2010 BET Awards. Hill reminisced on his first Prince concert in 1982 at the Apollo and more recently flying to Nice, France to see his two-hour set and another two-hour long after-hours set. "I know what I hope he's here to announce," but admitted he was out of the loop on what the big announcement was. At the press conference, Prince also debuted the full version of his new song 'Rich Friends.' Earlier this year, he released his album '20Ten' in newspapers across Europe and in the UK, but refused to allow access to the album to digital download services.

KIRK WHALUM - EVERTHING IS EVERYTHING: THE MUSIC OF DONNY HATHAWAY

Eight-Time Grammy nominated saxophonist Kirk Whalum has already had a whirlwind year with the recent release of the long-awaited third installment in his popular genre-bridging gospel jazz series, The Gospel According To Jazz: Chapter III (GATJ3). GATJ3 debuted at #4 on the Billboard Jazz Album chart and #11 on the Billboard Gospel Chart. After recently being named President & CEO of the Stax Museum of American Soul Music & Stax Music Academy, Whalum now caps off a stellar year with the release of Everything Is Everything: The Music of Donny Hathaway via Rendezvous Music, an imprint of Mack Avenue Records. Everything Is Everything consummates Whalum’s chart-topping For You and The Babyface Songbook trilogy to complete a collection that brilliantly exhibits Kirk’s singular interpretive skills. Donny Hathaway would have been 65 years old on October 1, 2010. Although the passing of this visionary and multi-talented artist left a significant void, his pervasive influence left an indelible mark on popular music. There could be no better standard bearer for Hathaway’s work than tenor saxophonist Kirk Whalum, whose work has similarly crossed the boundaries between R&B, gospel and jazz with an emotional immediacy that is beyond compare. Highlights on Whalum’s Donny Hathaway tribute standards CD include “You Had To Know,” featuring a heartfelt performance by Donny’s daughter & neo-soul phenom Lalah Hathaway. Also, R&B crooner Musiq Soulchild gives a retro take on “We’re Still Friends.” This intricate and principled CD also features arrangements by Gil Goldstein and John Stoddart and collaborations from a virtual who’s who of contemporary jazz masters such as Rick Braun, Jeff Golub and Christian McBride. Helping to push the boundaries on this musical tribute celebration is pedal steel scorcher Robert Randolph. All of these dynamic artists come together with Whalum’s passionate tenor to tell the musical story of one of the most important figures in popular music.

JACKIEM JOYNER'S NEWEST RELEASE

Soul and R&B Saxophonist Jackiem Joyner is back and ready for his close-up. It has already been a whirlwind year for this multi-dimensional saxophone player. Dramatic events offstage, such as reuniting with his father after 23 years, have inspired his work in the spotlight and influenced the songs, sounds and textures used in the creation of his third album, a self-titled disc. The result is the new CD Jackiem Joyner is out now on Artistry Music, an imprint of Mack Avenue Records. Sonically and compositionally, the new collection reflects artistic progress and evolution while remaining true to Joyner’s core sound. Much like a silent film, Jackiem Joyner tells a story without words, with an instrumental voice that for the first time in the artist’s recording career includes a tenor sax in addition to his trademark alto and soprano horns. He also plays most of the other instruments on the album. As on his previous releases—Lil’ Man Soul and Babysoul—Joyner wrote, produced, recorded and mixed the record aside from a few select cover tunes. The one thing that shaped Jackiem Joyner most of all during the recording of this new CD was an unexpected family reunion. At the age of 30, Joyner recently reunited with his father and two older sisters whom he had not seen or spoken with since he was seven years old. This exciting gathering spawned the song “The Reunion,” which is an aural celebration with a melody as warm and familiar as a homecoming. More striking than their physical resemblance is Joyner’s musical resemblance to his father. Joyner’s father was a bass player, which subconsciously influenced the deep bass heavy “Back Home Again” which features Joyner letting loose on a free-form sax solo. Thematically, the moods and tones on this project are varied, yet at their essence they are deeply rooted in the rich soil of soulful expression and raw emotion. Rhythmically, Joyner audaciously explores complex, astute and frenetic beats. Joyner explains, “Ever since I was 12 in my mom’s house, I’ve been drumming on walls, tapping out rhythms with spoons and beating on anything that I can. I still have that habit today. I always hear beats in my head;it’s intriguing to see where they take me. This whole record is about writing and making the type of record that I wanted to make. You can really hear me right up front. My first two albums were titled after my nicknames, but now it’s just me front and center for the entire world to see, which is why I decided to go with a self-titled album.” Jackiem’s last project, Lil’Man Soul topped the smooth jazz radio charts for an incredible 12weeks. The lead single “I’m Waiting For You” was the longest-running #1 single in 2009 and is up for Song of the Year at the inaugural American Smooth Jazz Awards this year. In 2010 the album’s Take Me There climbed to the summit position and setup camp.
Babysoul, Joyner’s first album, debuted at #15 on the Billboard chartin 2007 led by the single “Stay With Me Tonight,” a duet with iconic smooth jazz guitarist Peter White. As an artist Joyner is truly maturing, yet he continues to exude a youthful enthusiasm. Hitting his stride, he is bolstered by the confidence to take risks and push the envelope creatively. He’s hungry yet his humility is admirable. Although he’s topped the charts with his solo efforts, he’s equally comfortable as a sideman for top acts such as Peter White, Joe Sample, Gerald Albright and Keiko Matsui as when he’s commanding the stage solo. However it’s becoming more clear that his days in supporting roles are fleeting fast in favor of his rightful position at center stage. Versatile and blessed with a visceral gift, Joyner is a rising star that has yet to reach its zenith.

ALBERT RIVERA - INNER PEACE

Jazz saxophonist Albert Rivera, in concert with Turnaround Records, has released his second album on Turnaround Records, entitled Inner Peace. This album is a contemporary addition to Rivera’s unique collection of smooth, musical grooves that includes his highly acclaimed first album, Re-Introduction. For Rivera, Inner Peace represents a musical triumph in its accessibility. “The listener, whether a newcomer to jazz or a seasoned fan, will be able to appreciate and enjoy this album,” says Rivera. A number of prestigious musicians accompany him on Inner Peace, including guitarist Mark Whitfield, bassist Luques Curtis and pianist Zaccai Curtis. Of the Curtis brothers, Rivera says, “Both Luques and Zaccai are and always will be a cornerstone for my music. They add a distinctive flavor and groove and together we enjoy a deep musical connection.” The album also features outstanding up-and-coming jazz musicians including Beck Burger on Hammond B3 organ, Jean Caze and Nick Roseboro on trumpet, and John Iannuzzi and Nathan Jolley on drums. Inner Peace features nine original Rivera compositions, including groove-driven improvisations and tender, emotional ballads. “Remembrance” is a reflective tribute to 9/11 where Rivera deepens the emotional connection with his audience. Rivera wrote “It Always Comes Back to This” specifically for those new to the jazz world. He says, “I wanted to write a song in which the groove was so strong, yet so simple, that it would stay with the listener. A pulse, starting with the saxophone and organ, stays consistent throughout the entire piece.” The title track, “Inner Peace”, is Rivera’s gift to his listeners, offering a musical route to relaxation and deep thought. Rivera hopes the melody and harmonious grooves of “Inner Peace” will create a passage for his audience to their own, personal space of peace and tranquility. This latest album represents yet another achievement in Rivera’s long list of musical accomplishments. Born in Bronx, N.Y., Rivera began playing classical music at age 10, and became hooked on the sounds of Charlie Parker and John Coltrane while studying in the selective LaGuardia High School for Music and Arts program. His long musical journey has taken him to illustrious venues like the Litchfield Jazz Camp and Festival and Smalls in New York City. Rivera has played with many contemporary jazz greats such as Don Braden, Jimmy Green and Claudio Roditi. Others in this illustrious group include Reggie Workman, Chico Hamilton, Billy Harper, Rachel Z and Charli Persip. Rivera has toured throughout North America with his own Trio and Quartet, playing at several New York venues like Sweet Rhythm, Zinc Bar, Cleopatra’s Needle, Nuyorican Poets Cafe and the River Room of Harlem.

SMOOTH JAZZ RADIO WJCD SWITCHES FORMATS

Clear Channel Radio in Norfolk, VA has switched some of their stations, bringing an end to one of the last remaining large-market Smooth Jazz stations. The Oldies format that had been airing on WCDG at 92.1 heads to WKUS and relaunches as "Magic 105.3." That moves WKUS's Urban Adult Contemporary programming to a simulcast on 92.1 and 107.7, taking over the latter frequency from Smooth Jazz WJCD. With regard to the new Magic 105.3, Clear Channel Radio/Norfolk Operating Manager Travis Dylan told the Virginian-Pilot, "It's not a new format like you were creating some kind of monster in the laboratory format. This is a format that is out there in other markets and they've had success with it. We feel that Hampton Roads deserves a station like this." He said the flips were in response to surveys over the past year and to ratings issues. "Whenever that happens, you have to look hard at your options," Dylan said. "And we felt this was an option that would work here based on the needs of this area."

DAVE KOZ - HELLO TOMORROW

In a career that spans 20 years and a dozen albums, saxophonist Dave Koz has established himself as one of the most prominent figures in contemporary jazz. Yet, as noteworthy as his body of recorded work, entertaining live performances and other past accomplishments might be, Koz finds himself in an era of dramatic and sweeping change where everything once taken for granted is suddenly up for grabs. For Koz – and for all of us in this first decade of the new century – it’s a new day, full of new challenges and opportunities, and new rules that are still being written. Koz embraces this era of change – and even the uncertainty that comes with it – on Hello Tomorrow, his debut on Concord Records. Hello Tomorrow includes the #1 single ‘Put The Top Down” featuring guitarist Lee Ritenour. The celebrated album includes Dave Koz on lead vocals on the ‘60’s classic song “This Guy’s In Love With You” which features Herb Alpert (note that this song was also a huge hit for Alpert). A recent review by the New York Times calls Hello Tomorrow “an event record, featuring Mr. Koz, the ever-upbeat saxophonist alongside a parade of guests,” including Dave’s first collaborations with Keb’ Mo (“Think Big” and the bluesy jam “There’s A Better Way”) and Boney James, who trades licks with Koz on “When Will I Know For Sure.” Produced by Grammy-winners John Burk and Marcus Miller (who also appears on several tracks), the album features a diverse army of other high-profile guests: Jonathan Butler, Brian Culbertson, Sheila E., Boney James, Jeff Lorber, Keb’ Mo’, Ray Parker, Jr., Christian Scott and others. Each of the thirteen tracks – most of then written by Koz and his collaborators, others penned by friends and legends – focuses on being open to new beginnings, and trusting that the future is unfolding in all the right ways for all the right reasons.

CASSANDRA WILSON - SILVER PONY

Silver Pony is the forthcoming new album from multiple Grammy Award-winning jazz-pop chanteuse Cassandra Wilson, will be released by EMI’s Blue Note Records on November 9. Wilson, whose remarkable, husky-tinged vibrato has created a trademark sound for her as an artist, will be touring worldwide in support of the release which features special guests saxophonist Ravi Coltrane (“Silver Moon”) and R&B singer-songwriter John Legend (“Watch The Sunrise”).A unique hybrid live/studio album, Silver Pony moves seamlessly between live recordings from a European tour and studio recordings laid down at New Orleans’ Piety Street Studios. The album features a mix of jazz/pop classics as well as songs newly-written by Cassandra and her band. Silver Pony draws its title from an experience which Cassandra had as a child and which left an indelible mark in her memory bank, and thus on her career itself. “A man came around my neighborhood in Jackson, Mississippi, with a pony and camera,” she recalls. “You could pay to get your picture taken.” Her brothers declined, but Cassandra was eager. Her mother hesitated-“there were certain things young ladies just didn't do,” Wilson adds. But Cassandra seized the moment, got the picture. “I'm so happy she let me ride the pony,” she says now. “I was fearless, and I guess she wanted to encourage that in me.” That priceless photo is now featured on the cover of “Silver Pony,” and such fearlessness now fuels Wilson's work. “I prepare for each recording but you can never truly prepare,” Wilson says. “Because you don't really know what's coming. You just place yourself in the circumstances that will allow the project to reveal itself.” Silver Pony was produced by Cassandra Wilson and John Fischbach (owner of Piety Street Recording Studios) and features Cassandra on vocals and synthesizer, Marvin Sewell on electric guitar, Jonathan Batiste on piano, Reginald Veal on electric bass, Herlin Riley on drums, and Lekan Babalola on percussion. Ravi Coltrane adds saxophone on “Silver Moon” and “Watch The Sunrise” features both vocals and piano by John Legend.

JOWEE OMICILL – ROOTS & GROOVES

New from saxophone and winds master Jowee Omicill is Roots & Groove which is due out on November 2. The spellbinding journey of Roots & Grooves incorporates musicians and technicians spanning four continents – from Africa and Haiti to Madagascar and Japan to Cuba and back to the United States. The music features Jowee’s own voice singing his lifting chants and hooks, as well as his “voice” on woodwinds, an assured and righteously pure tone destined to make believers of listeners ‘round the globe. Equally inspired by the folk melodies of his culture, the freedom of jazz, the reverence of gospel and all manner of soul-replenishing groove. Jowee stirs it all together into an irresistible brew. The Montreal-born musician of Haitian descent had the distinct honor of being invited to perform for the White House’s inaugural observation of Haitian Flag Day on May 18, sharing the enveloping sound of his alto and soprano saxophones and clarinet for 150 VIP guests. The son of a father who was born a minister and professor of philosophy, Jowee believes his calling to music has a higher purpose. “There’s a song on my CD titled ‘4 My People’ that I wrote for the flood victims of Haiti,” he shares. ‘I have since rededicated it also to the earthquake flood victims. That melody is what I wanted them to hear. Haitians are of African origin and Africa is the mother of civilization, therefore, ultimately, the song is for the world…which pretty much describes all of my music. It’s simple and spiritual…precisely what I want them to feel for the journey I am taking them on. I believe family is music as therapy.”

BUDDY GUY - LIVING PROOF

Five-time Grammy winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Buddy Guy, will release his new album, Living Proof on October 26th. His 11th Silvertone/Jive studio release marks an historic first as it brings together the incomparable B.B. King and Guy on the introspective and moving lead single, "Stay Around A Little Longer." The landmark single represents the first time that these two blues titans have ever joined together on a studio release. Asked what he considers himself Living Proof of, Buddy Guy answers modestly. "Do you know how many guys I started out with who just threw up both hands and quit?" he says. "My first wife said to me, 'It's me or the guitar,' and I picked up my guitar and left. We still laugh about that. But I'm still picking away at it, I don't know nothing else." In addition to the collaboration with B.B. King, Guy recruits fellow guitar legend Carlos Santana, who joins him on the slinky tune "Where the Blues Begins."

At 74-"years young," he's been a major influence on rock titans like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, a pioneer of Chicago's fabled West Side sound and a living link to that city's halcyon days of electric blues. In a career than spans nearly 50 years he has received 23 W.C. Handy Blues Awards (the most any artist has received), the first annual Great Performer of Illinois Award, the Billboard magazine Century Award for distinguished artistic achievement, and the Presidential National Medal of Arts. Rolling Stone ranked him in the top 30 of its "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time." Recently, Buddy Guy wrapped shooting the "Stay Around A Little Longer" video with B.B. King in Las Vegas and just held "An Evening With Buddy Guy" at the Gammy Museum's theater in Los Angeles where he discussed his storied career and performed a selection of songs. Right now the indefatigable musician is on tour throughout North America.

THE RAT PACK'S 50th ANNIVERSARY WITH THE VERY BEST OF THE RAT PACK & CHRISTMAS WITH THE RAT PACK

Iconic entertainers Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr. — the Rat Pack, a sheer force of nature on stage and film that defined suave masculine brio in the early 1960s are celebrating their 50th anniversary. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of this legendary act, Reprise Records and Capitol/EMI will release two essential collections: The Very Best Of The Rat Pack (Reprise) on November 9, and Christmas With The Rat Pack (Capitol/EMI) on October 5, available at all retail outlets (CD and digital), including www.sinatra.com. Featuring 18 Vegas-era favorites that spotlight each singer, The Very Best Of The Rat Pack captures the upbeat entertainment style synonymous with the trio. The collection also includes a previously unreleased alternate version of Sinatra's "I'm Gonna Live Until I Die."

Ol' Blues Eyes opens the album with the signature track "Come Fly With Me" and also contributes his irresistible hits "I Get A Kick Out Of You" and "Witchcraft." The collection also includes "I've Got You Under My Skin," ranked among Sinatra aficionados as one of his finest collaborations with Nelson Riddle, and "Luck Be A Lady," a song featured in the musical "Guys And Dolls." Dino's velvety croon takes the spotlight on six unforgettable performances that include "Volare (Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu)," the dramatic Italian ballad that Martin took to #12 in 1958, "Who's Got The Action?" from the 1962 film of the same name starring Martin and Lana Turner, and "Ain't That A Kick In The Head," a tune he sang in the Rat Pack's classic 1960 heist film Ocean's 11. Christmas With The Rat Pack, a 16-track collection of festive holiday classics begins with Dean Martin's "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!," followed by Frank Sinatra's take on "Mistletoe And Holly," and Sammy Davis Jr.'s "Christmas Time All Over The World." The newly formed record label Manhattan Avenue Jazz (a division of Robo Records, now partnered by Rocket Science Inc. & Sony Distribution) has announces Angie Wells - Well Swung! as its debut release. Jazz fans of all ages will delight in the mix of big band and jazz combo standards on Well Swung!” according to Rob Christie, Grammy winning producer & president of Manhattan Avenue Jazz. “Fans of Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and even The Rat Pack, will enjoy Angie’s fresh take on some of the greatest jazz standards of all time”.

According to her mother, the first song Angie ever danced to was a B.B. King song. Angie’s love of singing started in her teens, when she sang in talent contests at school and won first place as a jazz singer in college. “The seeds of my professional singing career were planted in a wonderful little supper club called Chez Papa in Paris’ St. Germain Des Pres, where I was first invited to sing with a pro jazz band” said Angie. She has recorded and performed with various world-class musicians, including Grammy winning pianist, composer and arranger, Bill Cunliffe (credits include Frank Sinatra, Buddy Rick, Ray Brown and Joshua Redman, etc.), the much sought after bassist Tom Warrington ( Peggy Lee, Freddie Hubbard, Arturo Sandoval, etc.) and talented drummer Joe La Barbera (Bill Evans, Chuck Mangione, Art Farmer and Tony Bennett, etc.).

PAUL BROWN - LOVE YOU FOUND ME

Smooth Jazz legend, producer, artist, sound engineer and double Grammy winner Paul Brown released his newest album, Love You Found Me, on September 28th via the Shanachie Entertainment label. Already, this eagerly anticipated album is being anointed by his loyal fans, radio personalities, and industry icons as his best yet. With something for every cool musical taste, you'll find a delectable variety of laid-back, contemplative to up-tempo charts, perfectly seasoned by Brown's inimitable R&B style. "This CD is a real reflection of my musical influences. Folk, rock, blues and jazz all mixed together," Brown reflected, on the album's release date. The album opener, "Sugar Fish," eases the listener into Brown-ville with the help of Jessy J's flute and Greg Adams' flugelhorn. Further in, don't miss Brown's unaffected reunion with Marc Antoine in "Right Back At Ya," that continues their magical spell created on the 2009 hit album, Foreign Exchange. The namesake track uses Brown's own vocals, as a "love story" tribute to his wife, Jacqui, celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary. According to Brown, it became a family affair as she decided to venture, for the first time, into producing her husband's vocals. Brown reflected, "She's never really had much to do with my music before, so I think she had a huge effect on the performances." With Brown literally singing to the love of his life, who was right there in the studio, the track really captures his emotion, bottling it for us to replay over and over.

LA devotee Tom Brady enthused, while "Shakin" to the unmistakable groove of Brown's soulful Gibson L-5 electric guitar, "Multi-talented Paul Brown really delivers on this album. He's cut a tantalizing mood-setter to start the weekend 'chill' outdoors, or that drive home. Destined for a hit single, 'Toast and Jam' incorporates the sultry sax talent of Jessy Jto create a perfect dance number." "Offering lots of vocal variety throughout," he continues, "the 'End of the Day' track evokes a Jackson Browne vibe, yet you'll hear definite Bruce Springsteen-like overtones in 'The One You Lean On.' Brown really infuses his cool, mellow sound with an upbeat energy throughout, his melodies, plus a hint of Southern love. 'Let Me Love You' is a must to add to your romantic collection. Now a personal favorite, 'Right Back At Ya' features Marc Antoine's sweet guitar accents juxtaposed with Paul Brown's characteristic driving rhythms. Get ready for a ride to the intersection of Romance and Groove Streets, where the lights are low and the mood is just right. Bravo!" Paul Brown performs live with Marc Antoine on October 8, 2010 at Palm Desert's La Quinta Resort before he heads to England on a smooth jazz cruise.

RAY CHARLES - RARE GENIUS: THE UNDISCOVERED MASTERS

Concord Records is celebrating the 80th birthday of the legendary Ray Charles with a special gift for his legions of fans: Rare Genius: The Undiscovered Masters. This treasure trove of newly discovered recordings, highlighted by a duet with fellow icon Johnny Cash, will become available at physical and digital retailers October 26, 2010.Culled from four decades worth of demos and other previously unreleased material, Rare Genius showcases the remarkable artistic vision, stylistic range and emotionally rich vocals that crafted Charles enduring legacy. Listening to the ten gems from the '70s, '80s and '90s that comprise this CD, fans will have no trouble envisioning the late singer rocking back and forth at the piano as he effortlessly segues between R&B/soul, pop, country and gospel. “Ray would always get inside the meaning of a lyric and make the listener believe every word, ” says Concord Music Group Chief Creative Officer. John Burk. “His vocals carried incredible emotion and intensity, even on demo tapes. What we have here with Rare Genius is on par with some of his greatest works.” And that’s crystal clear right from the album’s sparkling opener, "Love’s Gonna Bite You Back." The March 1980 session track features an upbeat horn arrangement behind what Rare Genius liner notes author Bill Dahl calls “a Charles vocal that’s a signature mixture of sandpaper grit and heavenly goodness.” Up next is the stunning ballad "It Hurts to Be in Love, " which underscores the album’s main thematic focus and one of Charles’ favorite subjects: the ups and down of romance. Another compelling standout is the gospel-stirred Charles and Cash duet on Kris Kristofferson’s "Why Me, Lord?" Discovered in the Sony vaults, the song was produced by Billy Sherrill in Nashville and recorded in 1981 for an anticipated release on a CBS album. For unknown reasons, that didn’t come to pass. What’s more important, however, is the emotional charge you get listening to these two powerful voices come together in this spirited and inspired pairing. Except for "Lord, " the nine other Rare Genius tracks including the soul-drenched "I Don’t Want No One But You, " a blues-infused cover of songwriter Hank Cochran’s country classic "A Little Bitty Tear" and the joyous "I’m Gonna Keep on Singin'" were found in the vault at Charles’ R.P.M. International studios in Los Angeles. Adding a little sweetening to some of the sparse, stripped-down tracks was a team of top-notch musicians and artists: guitarists Keb' Mo' and George Doering, organist Bobby Sparks, trumpeter Gray Grant, trombonist Alan Kaplan, bassists Trey Henry and Chuck Berghofer, drummers Gregg Field and Ray Brinker and background vocalist Eric Benet. As with its Concord predecessor, 2004’s Grammy-winning Album of the Year Genius Loves Company, Rare Genius: The Undiscovered Masters is another fitting tribute to Charles, who would have turned 80 on September 23. It’s a fresh, vibrant reaffirmation of the music icon’s unparalleled artistry and legacy.

TAYLOR EIGSTI - DAYLIGHT AT MIDNIGHT

Concord Jazz has released Daylight at Midnight, the newest album from pianist and composer Taylor Eigsti. This collection includes original Eigsti compositions, as well as other remarkable musical renditions by composers such as Nick Drake, Imogen Heap, Elliot Smith and Rufus Wainwright. The 11-track collection marks Eigsti’s third Concord Jazz release. On Daylight at Midnight, Eigsti continues to challenge the norms of what constitutes jazz today. While Eigsti pays full respect to the jazz tradition, he also exercises his passion for melodies of esteemed songwriters from his generation and explores a variety of music that piques his curiosity. In this collection, he not only finds resonance in the aforementioned top-tier, pop-oriented composers... but also brings to light a doubleheader of personal revelation: 20th-century Catalonian classical pianist Federico Mompou and up-and-coming vocalist/songwriter Becca Stevens, who sings five of the 11 tunes and adds her own flavors of the ukulele and charango. As fitting for an adventurous repertoire, the young pianist augments his unique and lyrical style with the Fender Rhodes, Rhodes PianoBass, Wurlitzer electric piano and Mellotron samples to add color and texture to the tunes.

Daylight at Midnight opens with an inventive instrumental interpretation of Coldplay’s “Daylight,” where Eigsti’s brilliant piano lines and his simpatico rhythm team of bassist Harish Raghavan and world-renowned jazz drummer Eric Harland create beautiful and unpredictable sound waves. The end of the tune affirms Eigsti’s principle, stating, “I can play standards the rest of my life. But I wanted to step away to see what I could do that was different.” The first track is followed by producer Matt Pierson’s selections: Wainwright’s “The Art Teacher,” which is an instrumental piece that showcases the pianist’s adept Fender Rhodes accompaniment, and “ The Water,” which features luminous vocalist Becca Stevens in a sensual, yet confident and concentrated manner. Stevens also stars on Imogen Heap’s “Little Bird,” a whimsical tune that is performed as a duo with Fender Rhodes, and on Elliot Smith’s reflective beauty “Between the Bars” as well as the collaborative originals, “Magnolia" and "Midnight After Noon.” Of the latter piece, Eigsti explains, “I’d been trying to finish this song for some five years…Once the words came, I realized that the loop melody I had written started sticking in my head.” In the middle section of the album, Eigsti strips his band down to a duo with guest guitarist and longtime musical partner, Julian Lage, on Nick Drake’s “Pink Moon.”

Even as important as Daylight at Midnight is to Eigsti's growth as an artist, the pianist is already thinking about his next musical projects. The once prodigious child pianist is unsatisfied staying static. He is always craving for change in a new music project or exploring different sounds. “With Daylight at Midnight, I wanted to tap into the singer-songwriter world, which will hopefully lead to the next compositional phase in my musical development.”

TrackList:
1. Daylight
2. Magnolia
3. The Art Teacher
4. The Water
5. Pink Moon
6. Little Bird
7. Secreto
8. Chaos

GEQ ARE ALL ABOUT VERSATILITY

At a time when established jazz “groups” are scarce, GEQ is that rare gem that plays classic jazz, bebop and nu-jazz music of the highest artistic order. GEQ has been respectfully likened to Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers as well as Miles Davis and John Coltrane’s ensembles continuing the rumbling of excellence through their musicianship and professionalism. Composer/Trumpeter, Guymon Ensley originally assembled his band in 2001 and debuted it at the historic "Bakers Keyboard Lounge" in Detroit, Michigan in 2002. In August of 2003, the band had four major tours under their belt, billed with such internationally known artists as Yolanda Adams, Jefferey Osborn, The Isley Brothers, The Whispers and Frankie Beverly. GEQ has worldwide aclaim performing to audiences prestigous venues on numerous islands of Jamaica and aboard luxiurious cruise ships like the Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Lines. Guymon has performed with bands of various genres, from Latin Jazz to R&B, big band to chamber ensembles and solo performances with piano accompaniment. Like a magnet, classic jazz and be-bop kept tugging at his creative wellspring.

In 2006, Here Put This On, was released containing songs written and originally performed by such legends as Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Wayne Shorter and Dizzy Gillespie along with three originals. The CD was re-released in 2009 with two more original ‘bonus’ tracks penned by Ensley. SPANISH HARLEM ORCHESTRA - VIVA LA TRADICON

Concord Picante has announced the release of Viva la Tradicón, the newest album from the Grammy winning 13-piece collective Spanish Harlem Orchestra. The 12-track collection marks the orchestra’s debut album for Concord Picante and overall fourth outing. Viva la Tradicón takes up where its three predecessors left off – stirring the pot of mid-20th century influences and keeping the salsa simmering for current and future generations. Now in its tenth year, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra is one of the most formidable and authentic Latin jazz combos of today. Yet for all of its appeal with contemporary audiences, the group’s success is actually rooted in the past. A lively and energetic affair, Viva la Tradición draws on inspiration from the music’s history and enduring traditions. The collection is comprised largely of original compositions and arrangements of classic salsa tunes by bandleader/founder Oscar Hernandez. Hernández is one of the most respected musicians in Latin & Latin Jazz music. His track record & discography are extensive. On the new CD he enlists the support of veteran composer and arranger Gil Lopez on three of Lopez’s compositions (“Son De Corazon,” “Nuestra Cancion,” and “Regalo De Dios).Viva la Tradicón opens with the exciting “La Salsa Dura,” a song bursting with punching horn lines and spirited vocals that “really captures what we’re about,” says Hernandez. Amid the series of salsa tracks, one of Gil Lopez’s arrangements, “Nuestra Cancion,” acts as an unlikely addition to the high-powered energy of the set. The collective included this ballad as a point to their listeners, in order to communicate, “you need to listen to this, because this how it was done back in those days. It was just beautiful music.” The orchestra finishes with two songs: Hernandez’s “Rumba Urbana,” a percussive and complex tune that shimmers with tight trumpet lines and syncopated rhythms around improvised solos, and “El Negro Tiene Tumbao,” a tune that draws on the bold and artistic delivery by featured guest vocalist Isaac Delgado.Front to back, Viva la Tradición is very much a nod to the countless artists – well known and obscure – who helped usher salsa music into the cultural mainstream several decades ago. “Preserving that legacy and introducing it to new audiences in a new century,” says Hernandez, “is more important than being the musical flavor of the month.”
