FEATURED JAZZ CHILL RELEASES THIS WEEK

VARIOUS ARTISTS - Blunted In The Backroom - Mixed By The Nextmen
The third set in the ongoing Blunted series from Brad Baloo and Dom Search as they heat things up with some hot n’ spicy reggae mixes. The duo live up to their name, taking the mix to the next level with some brand new production of their own!

JAZZTRONIK - Cannibal Rock
Great work from Jazztronik as they return with yet another album that seems to open another chapter in their endless pursuit of the groove! As before, keyboardist Ryota Nozaki is firmly at the helm of the proceedings - playing a mixture of acoustic piano and electric keys in a way that fleshes out the spirit of his tunes!

GAL COSTA - Hoje
This one is a fantastic new album from Gal Costa - a sweetly jazzy session that features some great arrangements and keyboards from the legendary Cesar Camargo Mariano! Mariano gives the album a nicely laidback feel - one that's almost rootsy at times, especially on the more percussive numbers!

VARIOUS ARTISTS - Bossa N Stones -- The Electro-Bossa Songbook Of The Rolling Stones
So well done that you would never even imagine you were listening to songs by the Rolling Stones - but one that works surprisingly well. I highly recommend this one!

CHET BAKER - Live In France 1978
Recorded in France around the time as his French studio album Broken Wing -- but done in a style that features long takes and a relaxed groove! Chet Baker works here with a quartet with Phil Markowitz on piano, Scott Lee on bass, and Jeff Brillinger on drums.

WILL DOWNING TO RELEASE "SOUL SYMPHONY" IN OCTOBER ON GRP

October Release Includes Powerful Rendition Of The Luther Vandross Hit "Superstar"

On Tuesday, October 4, 2005 Will Downing will release Soul Symphony, his newest album for GRP Records. The disc is a solid collection of well-crafted songs each showcasing Downing's trademark voice and style. Soul Symphony opens with the seductive beat of Put Me On and winds through a range of grooves and emotions. The first single from the album is the hit-bound slow jam, Crazy Love.

Other songs on the album include the emotive A Promise, Make Time for Love, a romantic ballad, and a rendition of Brian McKnight's What's It Gonna Be, from his album Superhero (Motown Records). Downing co-wrote several of the songs featured on Soul Symphony, including the beautiful Heart of Mine, Soul Steppin’ with its danceable groove, and Will Still Loves You, a respectful dedication to hard-working women and mothers everywhere.

One of the album's highlights is Superstar, a song originally made famous by The Carpenters and later closely associated with one of Downing's idols, the incomparable Luther Vandross. In fact, Downing brought down the house when he performed this song at the Forever, For Always, For Luther tribute and benefit concert held in New York at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in October 2004. Downing plans to tour following the release of Soul Symphony. Visit www.willdowning.com for dates and more information

BOZ SCAGGS "FADE INTO LIGHT" ALBUM MAKES U.S. DUALDISC DEBUT

New Songs, Fresh Re-Interpretations of Scaggs Classics, Three Video Performances Are Combined in American Edition

Fade Into Light, an intimate and understated studio album from the singer Boz Scaggs, will be released by Virgin Records on September 27, 2005. Previously released by Virgin Japan, Fade Into Light has become a much-sought-after prize among Scaggs aficionados who've paid high prices for the import. It offers "unplugged" versions of some of Scaggs' best-known songs, along with several new compositions. Included in this U.S. Virgin DualDisc edition is a new recording by Scaggs of the 80's classic, Love TKO.

The DVD side of the U.S. package contains the entire album in Enhanced Stereo, along with concert performances in 5.1 Surround Sound and High Definition Video of Lowdown, Harbor Lights and We're All Alone, taken from the Boz Scaggs Greatest Hits Live DVD, recorded in San Francisco. When asked about his approach to this production, Scaggs says: "I've always worked like this in my recording. I hire good musicians and let them do what they do. What you hear on this album is those guys, in that room, on that day." Scaggs initiated the original session when he was hired to write and record the title track as a theme song for a Japanese film. Later, the label requested four more songs to make up an EP, and then more songs to make a full album. Scaggs and the band recorded new arrangements of his classic songs Lowdown, Harbor Lights and We're All Alone, from his landmark album Silk Degrees, as well as Simone from 1980's Middle Man, along with several newly written songs, at Skywalker Sound in Northern California.

Among the players joining Boz are Nathan East, Greg Phillinganes, David Paich, Ray Parker, Jr., Lenny Castro, Dean Parks and Booker T. Jones. Tom Scott did the solo on Lowdown. Born in Texas, and raised with an abiding respect for a wide spectrum of American roots music, Boz Scaggs recorded early on with his high school buddy Steve Miller. He made his solo debut in 1969 on Atlantic Records with Boz Scaggs. His 1976 album Silk Degrees has been RIAA-certified for sales of over 5 million copies, its classic hit singles and frequently covered album tracks sparking an extraordinary album chart run of well over two years. Other notable Scaggs albums include the platinum-certified Middle Man, Slow Dancer, and the three albums he made in the 1990s for Virgin: his label debut Some Change, the Grammy-nominated blues collection Come On Home, and the critically acclaimed Dig. In 2003 he released But Beautiful, a classic jazz quartet outing through the Great American Songbook on his own Gray Cat label.

Fade Into Light was produced by Boz Scaggs, with the exception of Lowdown (produced by Scaggs and David Paich, the original co-author of that song and the original arranger of the Silk Degrees album), Love TKO (produced by Paich), Lost It, Time, Sierra and I'll Be the One (produced by Scaggs and Ricky Fataar).

Starting in November Scaggs will be in Japan on tour...

SIMPLY RED PRESENTS "SIMPLIFIED" THIS OCTOBER

Mick Hucknall Shines on Stripped Down Versions of the Band's Classics as Well as New Songs

On Tuesday, October 18, 2005, Simply Red will release Simplified, a collection that features both stripped-down versions of the band's classic songs as well as fresh recordings. This unique new album, available on the Verve Forecast label, allows the songs and unmistakable voice of Mick Hucknall to shine. Simplified takes more well-known tracks from Simply Red's impressive back catalog and re-imagines them in a more acoustic -- "simplified" -- fashion. It also includes their stunning take on the Leon Russell classic, A Song For You. Hucknall was inspired to revisit some of Simply Red's hits after he was asked to perform some material with only a piano as accompaniment. "What struck me when I listened back to the performance was just how much the song leapt out at you in those circumstances," he says. Classic Simply Red songs such as Something Got Me Started, Sad Old Red, Smile, and Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye are reinvigorated thanks to these sophisticated, even jazzy, new arrangements. One of the group's most popular hits, Holding Back The Years, is beautiful and still lush; recognizable, but with an added timeless maturity. Other songs featured on Simplified include More, Your Mirror, Fairground, and For Your Babies. The lead-off track and first single from Simplified is the irresistible, upbeat, and distinctly Latin-flavored Perfect Love. The Cuban vibe of this sensual new song is amplified by the vocals of Havana-based singer Danae. A Latin feeling runs throughout Simplified, inspired by the band's recent visit to Cuba. In fact, Simply Red is the first English pop band to have played in Havana, as they appeared at the landmark Gran Teatro early in 2005. Simplified is the follow-up to 2003's highly successful Home, which sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide. That release helped push the band to a level of over 50 million albums sold since forming 21 years ago. Although Simply Red's lineup of musicians has rotated throughout the years, the one constant has been Mick Hucknall, one of the finest male vocalists Britain has ever produced, and also one of its most accomplished, melodic, and prolific pop songwriters.

LONG-AWAITED CD FROM EARL KLUGH

KOCH Records recently released Naked Guitar from the highly acclaimed contemporary jazz guitar legend - Earl Klugh. A 13-time Grammy-nominated guitarist who has collaborated with the likes of Bob James, George Benson and Chick Corea, Earl Klugh has released nearly 30 albums in 25 years, making his smooth, acoustic melodies a truly integral part of contemporary jazz. Klugh emerges from a six-year studio hiatus with a collection of intimate solo interpretations of thirteen standards and pop classics. The album also includes an outstanding version of Angelina, the endearing tune from his self-titled 1976 solo debut. "I've always said the only reason to make an album is to do something interesting and unique each time out, and I really love to go down unexpected paths," says Klugh. On Naked Guitar he puts his indelible stamp on well-known tunes such as The Summer Knows, Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead, On A Clear Day, Alice in Wonderland, I Want To Hold Your Hand and Moon River. Reflecting on the making of Naked Guitar, Klugh says, "The guitar presents so many possibilities, but for me it is how you utilize all those possibilities to create your own identity, your own sound, your own way. There's the magic for me. I knew it would be fun to get back to work playing songs I have loved for a long time. Many of my improvisations didn't come with a preconceived rhyme or reason; they're more about the feeling of the moment. It was exciting making a record this way."

JAZZ CHILL SOUNDS FROM TOM & JAY

Tom & Joy's jazzy multilingual music represents different shades of sunlight and Antigua, their latest, is an album of melodic breezes and gleaming bossa nova rhythms. The French duo make tunes that call to mind sitting in an outdoor café in the center of Paris' Left Bank or can transport to the steamy dance floors of São Paolo or Rio. Tom & Joy are no strangers to dance floors since remixes of their songs have been popular during the past few years as native Frenchman Bob Sinclar brought their loveliness to a wider audience. Along with their stellar band, the two also enlist drummer Tony Allen, formerly a player with Afrobeat star Fela Kuti and this combination explodes with African sounds that celebrate the melting pot of culture within. As the sweet summer sun starts to set around the world, an album like Antigua is the perfect remedy for end-of-season sadness - it holds the exquisite sound of outdoors in each beautiful track.

SMOOTH JAZZ NEWS: SPYRO GYRA

LABOR DAY JAZZ IN SAN FRANCISCO WITH SPYRO GYRA
Contemporary jazz legend Spyro Gyra joins three of the world's most renowned smooth jazz artists, Kirk Whalum, Gerald Albright and Jeff Lorber, touring as Groovin' For Grover, on Monday, Sept. 5, at The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay. The concert concludes the summer season of KKSF 103.7's Concerts on the Coast, presented by Cingular with Samsung. "The first Concert on the Coast, featuring trumpeter Chris Botti on Labor Day 2004, was a tremendous, sold-out success and launched an ongoing partnership with KKSF, " said general manager Paul Ratchford. "We're thrilled to continue the tradition of offering the highest caliber live music for our guests and members of the community, in an extraordinary outdoor, oceanfront venue, with the Bay Area's leading smooth jazz radio station." Almost 30 years ago, before the genres of "smooth jazz" and "new adult contemporary" had reached the airwaves, Spyro Gyra began enthralling audiences with their breakthrough sound, an instrumental hybrid incorporating elements of R&B, Latin and Caribbean music.

The longtime jazz powerhouse, led by saxophone legend Jay Beckenstein, recently released their twenty-seventh album, Deep End, which has been hailed by critics as "jaw dropping...brilliant and compelling, " (Shannon West, Jazz Nation) and as reaffirming of Spyro Gyra's status as "one of jazz fusion's most original groups" (John Stevenson, eJazz). The Groovin' for Grover Tour is a celebration of the life and spirit of one of the most influential and dedicated figures in soul-jazz and R&B - Grover Washington, Jr. - by some of the brightest stars in smooth jazz.

Saxophonists Gerald Albright and Kirk Whalum join keyboardist Jeff Lorber and his rhythm section, promising a synergistic groove true to Washington's pioneering sound. Gerald Albright's sound has graced recordings by legends such as Nina Simone, Barry White, and The Temptations, among countless others, in addition to his own solo career. Currently working on a new project for Peak Records, Albright has also released six records on Atlantic, a collaborative album with Will Downing on Verve Forecast, and Kickin' It Up, his second album for GRP records. Albright has been an integral part of Phil Collins' albums and concerts since the mid '90s. Albright plays soprano, alto, and tenor saxophones on this concert tour.

Kirk Whalum has earned seven Grammy Nominations and one Stellar Award (Best Gospel Instrumental Album) for his musical virtuosity on the saxophone. Whalum has recorded with legends Al Jarreau, Barbra Streisand, and Quincy Jones, and on Whitney Houston's The Bodyguard and the hit single "I Will Always Love You, " leading to seven years of touring with Houston. Whalum has recorded for both Columbia Records and Warner Bros. Records.

Jeff Lorber rounds out Groovin' for Grover, adding R&B rhythms and jazz improvisations on keyboard. He played a significant role in developing the late '70s, early '80s R&B-jazz hybrid sound. Lorber's Jeff Lorber Fusion band featured then unknown saxophone player Kenny G. Lorber produced Kenny G's first record. Lorber's new project, Flipside, on Narada Jazz melds old-style swing rhythms, contemporary hip-hip productions, and bebop-era improvisations. Lorber pioneered this Groovin' For Grover project and is the musical director for the group.

THE CHILL IS GONE FROM CD 101.9FM

If you are an avid listener of WQCD 101.9 (New York Chill), then I am quite sure that you have noticed that the chill is gone after only 9 months of existence. Effective with the August 15, 2005 playlist, management decided to literally drop all of the chill/lounge music from their playlist and instead opted to replace these with more traditional ‘80’s and ‘90’s pop songs to blend in with their smooth jazz standards. Gone are the progressive sounds of St. Germain, Thievery Corporation, Brazilian Girls, Bebel Gilberto, De-Phazz and Jazzanova only to be replaced by the likes of Chuck Mangione, Ambrosia, Ace, Chris DeBurgh, DeBarge and Phil Collins – what a shame! It will be interesting to see if they continue to carry the Chris Botti and Rafe Gomez syndicated segments. Funny thing is that they have yet to address this change in format and we are frankly surprised that none of the New York press have yet to pick up on it. This is yet another example of big business analysts sitting in office towers making decisions on what they think people should be listening to. And here I though that those folks over at Emmis Broadcasting had balls for taking on this format to begin with. Man was I wrong – way wrong! Have no fear though, because there is a much better alternative – check out Blu 102.9 (KLBU-FM) in Santa Fe, New Mexico for 100% chill, dance and electro lounge, 100% of the time. Oh, and by the way, they’ve been committed to the same chill/lounge format since the latter part of ’03 with much success. Here is the link for your convenience: www.blu1029.com.

Moonlighting, the landmark album, which launched the original Rippingtons formed by Russ with some of his buddies, including David Benoit, Kenny G and Dave Koz, was named by Jazziz Magazine as the most influential jazz recording of all time. Since its inception, The Rippingtons have released sixteen recordings. Freeman has also recorded two solo projects and three collaborations. Guest saxophonist for this performance with The Rippingtons will be Eric Marienthal, whose new CD Got You Covered, is scheduled for release September 20. Considered the sexy saxman of smooth/urban jazz, saxophonist Paul Taylor's current CD Nightlife has been in the Top 10 on Billboard's Contemporary Jazz Chart since its release. "Nightlife" follows the sensation of Paul's 2003 Top 10 Billboard Contemporary Jazz album Steppin' Out. Paul's phenomenal year saw the title track of his CD became the third biggest genre airplay cut of the year, a tour with the all-star Groovin' for Grover line-up, and his performance and acting debut on the top ABC-TV daytime drama "One Life To Live." He also celebrates his tenth year as a solo recording artist, his sixth solo recording overall, and his fourth for the Peak Records label.
