DAVE KOZ & FRIENDS AT THE MOVIES SUMMER TOUR 2007

Dave Koz has added another special guest to the line-up for the Dave Koz and Friends At The Movies Summer 2007 Tour: 19-year-old Razor & Tie recording artist Kelly Sweet. Kelly is currently enjoying a #1 hit at Adult Contemporary radio with "Raincoat," the first single from her 2007 debut album, We Are One. The single is also steadily climbing the Smooth Jazz charts. The tour launches June 3rd in Columbia, MD and wraps up at the Hollywood Bowl in Hollywood, CA on August 19th. Each show on the tour will be a "double feature," with Koz, Sweet and previously announced special guests David Benoit and Phil Perry playing their respective hits during the first half of the show, then joining together on numerous selections from Koz's blockbuster album, At The Movies. Rendezvous recording artist Brian Simpson will play keyboards and serve as Koz's musical director.

Since its January 2007 release, At The Movies, Koz's homage to classic film music, has been at the top of the charts and Dave, a four-time Grammy nominee, has been in demand, appearing on national television shows such as "Good Morning America," "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," "The Today Show" and "The View," to name a few. At The Movies contains such classics as "Over The Rainbow," "Moon River," "As Time Goes By," "The Way We Were," "The Pink Panther" and "A Whole New World." Guest artists on the album include India.Arie, Anita Baker, Chris Botti, Barry Manilow, Johnny Mathis, Donna Summer and Vanessa Williams.

At 19, Kelly Sweet has already performed over 500 concerts in the U.S., including opening gigs for Paul Simon, Kenny Loggins and Anita Baker. The summer tour with Koz marks her first national tour since the March 2007 release of her acclaimed debut, We Are One. Classically-trained and able to sing in several languages (French, Italian and even Sanskrit), her music conveys a sense of depth, intimacy and sophistication not often heard in today's pop landscape as exemplified by lead single "Raincoat," which Billboard hailed as "a breezy, precocious ballad that displays an impressive vocal range, emotive expression and a vocal equivalent of cool, crush velvet." For more information on Kelly Sweet go to http://www.kelly-sweet.com.

Over the last quarter century, composer and pianist David Benoit has been a passionate musical innovator committed to the exploration of many different art forms on the American landscape. A five-time Grammy nominee for his extraordinary and seminal contributions to contemporary jazz,
Benoit has also embarked on a multi-faceted journey into the classical music world. For more information on David Benoit go to http://www.benoit.com.

Born and raised in East St. Louis, Phil Perry has spent most of his career as one of the most sought-after backing vocalists in the music business. His bright, multi-octave range has played a supporting role on dozens of albums by such acts as Anita Baker, Boz Scaggs, Rod Stewart, Peabo Bryson and George Duke. But he has also distinguished himself through five strong solo albums that have highlighted both his ability to interpret classic soul songs as well as his own songwriting skills. Deluxe Edition of "Traitors" by Calibro 35

Record Kicks proudly presents the reissue of CALIBRO 35’s fourth legendary long-time sold out album “Traditori Di Tutti” (Traitors) out Today on limited edition crystal red vinyl and digital “deluxe” edition with bonus tracks. The publication is part of “The Record Kicks Trilogy” that follows the reissue of the first three albums of the band, released in 2020. This time, Milan label Record Kicks will repress on wax of three different colours and on digital deluxe edition, the fourth, fifth and sixth legendary studio albums of the Italian cinematic-funk cult band. The digital deluxe edition of “Traditori Di Tutti” includes 2 bonus tracks: a crime funk cover of “Get Carter”, originally released as a b-side of the “Butcher’s Bride” 45 vinyl, and the unreleased funky stormer “Milan, Michigan”.

“Traditori Di Tutti” is the fourth album by Milan’s combo, inspired by noir masterpiece novel “Betrayers” published by the father of Italian noir, award-winning crime fiction author Giorgio Scerbanenco. The album contains only band’s original recordings, from floor-shaking first single “Giulia Mon Amour” to groovy “The Butcher’s Bride”, from deep funky “Filthy Bastards” to the dancefloor jazz madness of “Mescalina 6”. The five-piece pays homage to “I Maestri” such as Morricone, Micalizzi and Bacalov with 12 tracks full of funky beats, heavy guitars, groovy bass lines and fuzzy organs.

There’s one thing that Italians do better than others: funky soundtracks. Quentin Tarantino knows best: soundtracks from Italian movies of the '60s and the '70s are the THING! “Calibro 35 does with music what Tarantino does with films”. They borrow what they love and they make it their own. With Rolling Stone magazine words: “Calibro 35 are the most fascinating, "retro-maniac" and genuine thing that happened to Italy”.

Active since 2008, CALIBRO 35 enjoy a worldwide reputation as one of the coolest independent bands around. During their fourteen-year career, they were sampled by Dr. Dre on his "Compton" album, Jay-Z, The Child of lov & Damon Albarn; they shared stages worldwide with the likes of Roy Ayers, Muse, Sun Ra Arkestra, Sharon Jones, Thundercat and Headhunters and as unique musicians they collaborated with, amongst others, PJ Harvey, Mike Patton, John Parish and Stewart Copeland and Nic Cester (The Jet). Calibro 35 now count on a number of aficionados worldwide including VIP fans such as Dj Food (Ninja Tune), Mr Scruff and Huey Morgan (Fun Lovin' Criminals) among others.

AVANT-GARDE JAZZ DRUMMER PAUL TILLMAN SMITH RELEASES "A BEAUTIFUL HEART"

Having basically started my music career as a starving avant-garde jazz drummer, 19 and almost penniless on the streets of New York’s Lower East Side in 1967. Jazz drummer Norman Connors and I were best friends and roommates for a while, the difference being he could run home to his momma in Philly to eat and my momma was way in California. Rent was like 40 dollars a month, and I was lucky if I had that. Kenny Dorham and Cecil McBee whenever I would see them on the streets always bought me food. Playing the angry experimental jazz of that era mainly with saxophonist Sonny Simmons, Pharaoh Sanders and Albert Ayler was definitely economically dangerous.

I left Oakland with bassist/percussionist Juma Sultan and first lived in the basement of singer Richie Havens house and there were cockroaches as big as my kneecap running around. Juma and I played with many of New York’s cutting edge Jazz kats including saxophonist Jackie McClean who asked me to join his band but I was beat down and ready to go home by then. I saw too many musicians doing bad and too many drugs around. Soon after I left Juma became Jimi Hendrix’s musical Guru helping Jimi to change the direction of his music. I was back home by then licking my wounds at my momma’s house. At Juma’s insistence Jimi bought me a plane ticket to come to Woodstock to play with his new band but I never caught the plane because I was afraid of Jimi’s music, a right decision at the time but a big mistake historically.

I soon recognized that I needed to figure out a better way to make more money if I was going to stay a musician, so I began writing music with lyrics, something I had started when I was 15 and stopped when I got out of high school. After high school I began playing drums in a hippy band called the “Second Coming”. Rock legend Steve Miller was also in the band and it was soon after that I switched to jazz. Thank goodness I learned a little piano when I was young. People still can’t figure out how a jazz drummer writes pop and funk tunes. The jazz community won’t own me and the funk community won’t own me. I’m caught in the middle somewhere. My jazz chops are up, however.

A couple of these songs represent some of my late ‘80s to middle ‘90s musical productions, updated where I had a chance to work with the late pianist-vocalist Bonnie Boyer and vocalist-pianist Rosie Gaines who both toured with Prince. I also recorded Sheila E when she was 15 and you can find that record in Japan somewhere.

Vocalist Skyler Jett, who also showed up at my house ambitious at age 15 continues to have an illustrious career and also took Lionel Richie’s place for a few gigs with the Commodores. Skyler is featured with Bonnie on a duet called “The Newsroom”, and that’s me doing the news broadcast on the tune. I had to get in where I could fit in. KCSM disc jockey and TV personality Sonny Buxton was paid to do the original news broadcast, my friend who never invited me to be in his Bay Area jazz picture that hangs at San Francisco’s main library. Everybody I ever played with was in it. I did enjoy playing at his Milestone’s Jazz club many times in a band with John Handy and pianist Bill Bell. God knows how many thousands of hours I spent playing in San Francisco jazz clubs many with Bobby Hutcherson, Merl Saunders, Woody Shaw, Alice Coltrane, Harold Land and Eddie Henderson, the list goes on. My voice over on “Newsroom” turned out pretty good. Anyway, Skyler Jett currently has a new single out entitled “Eternally” featuring him and soprano sax icon Kenny G that is real cool. —

Also, third-year “American Idol” finalist LaToya London — who everyone from the Bay thought should have won the damn thang — sings two cuts and is also featured on the title track along with Donnie, Bonnie and Rosie, called “A Beautiful Heart”. The song also features another Prince bandmate, Levi Seacer Jr., on guitar, Nelson Braxton of the Braxton Brother’s who currently is in Michael Bolton’s band is on bass, and Michael Jackson’s last guitarist, Tommy Oregon, is the groove master on the track. The late Donald Tavie who was “lakesides” pianist is playing the keys, plus Lori Taylor, who is now sadly in a permanent coma suffered during childbirth, sings on the hook. Former Qwest recording artist and Wynton Marsalis bandmate Robert Stewart takes a mean sax solo.

I am also showcasing what I believe to be Rosie’s first professional recording from 1981, a song titled “Summer Sky.” The song sounds like it could have been a hit back when I cut it. I should have put it on the market way back then. (No wonder I’m broke!) Rosie’s song is the bonus track at the end of the record and features Ray Obiedo on guitar.

Of course, the greatest unsung vocal hero of the Bay area, third-year “American Idol” finalist Donnie Williams, is the main featured vocalist on seven of the 14 tracks. This is my fourth musical collaboration with him.

“Precious Song” is the only Gospel song on my record. It is sung and arranged by church pianist Robert Collier, with added vocals by Donnie Williams. Sax man Vincent Lars, who plays unbelievably on the song, should have been famous a long time ago. The song was inspired and is dedicated to Reverend Jay Matthews who is currently the presiding Rector at the “Cathedral of Christ the Light” Oakland Ca.

Lastly would like to thank my Godson Derick Hughes a member of my seventies Bang CBS recording group “Bridge” for his great vocal arrangement of “ Sweet and Wonderful” a song he co-wrote with Bridge keyboardist Michael (Spiderman) Robinson while both were members of the Bridge band. Derick is currently the lead male vocalist with Roberta Flack and also spent time recording with Motown & Prince in the 80’s. Spiderman is now one of the most sought after keyboardist in the bay area.

I love these songs. Some are freshly cut and others are old tracks that were updated and newly arranged by two Bay Area musical geniuses Bassist Nelson Braxton and Guitarist Levi Seacer Jr. I am so proud to be able to put my name on such a lovely work o art. My daddy would be proud of me.

STEVE TYRELL - BACK TO BACHARACH

Steve Tyrell will bring his brand of Bacharach to New York City's Blue Note Café and a number of other East Coast venues this summer in support of his upcoming album "Back to Bacharach," set for release on June 24th, 2008. "Back to Bacharach" (on New Design Records and KOCH Records) is the new classic, CD from Grammy winning singer/songwriter/producer extraordinaire Steve Tyrell. At the age of 19, Steve journeyed from Houston, Texas to New York City to work at pop and soul music giant Scepter Records. Upon arriving at Scepter Records and its adjacent Baby Monica Publishing Company, he immediately found himself surrounded by swiftly developing super teams such as Carole King & Gerry Goffin, Nicholas Ashford & Valerie Simpson and Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil. But it was with a pair of outside contractors - songwriting producers Burt Bacharach & Hal David -- that Steve would forge his most personal alliance, an alliance that lasted for nine years and enabled Tyrell to forge his initial mark in the music business.

Through his work with Bacharach & David, Tyrell got to work in motion pictures and at a very young age became one of the first music supervisors responsible for coordinating hit songs with the release of the films they appeared in. Those successes included the gold standard of foreplay songs, "The Look of Love" (recorded for the James Bond spy spoof "Casino Royale" by Dusty Springfield,) the theme for "Alfie" (sung by Cher in the film and by Dionne Warwick at the Academy Awards) as well as the theme from the legendary Jacqueline Susan film "Valley Of The Dolls" (which Tyrell helped make Dionne's first Number 1 Pop Hit record). The film song that Steve played a major role in was "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" - the one that earned Bacharach & David the Oscar® for 1969's Best Original Song in a Motion Picture. When looking for an artist to sing the song, Steve called in his friend from Texas, B.J. Thomas who recorded it for "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid."

The song that gets the Technicolor treatment on "Back to Bacharach" is Bacharach and David's anthem, "What the World Needs Now is Love," a song Steve believes is "more relevant now than it ever was." Bacharach's piano glues together the whole affair which features superstars Rod Stewart, James Taylor, Martina McBride and Dionne Warwick along with Tyrell. The all-star recording is for a worthy cause -- all proceeds will go to the National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance (NCCRA) in remembrance of Steve's wife Stephanie (who passed away from Colon Cancer five years ago) and Jay Monahan, the late husband of television journalist Katie Couric. Close friends, Steve Tyrell and Katie Couric have worked together constantly since his wife's death, raising funds to benefit Colon Cancer research and co-hosting an annual benefit in Seattle called "Make The Evening Matter."

Other classics featured on the "Back to Bacharach" album are: "Walk On By," The Look Of Love," Close To You," "A House Is Not A Home," "This Guy's In Love," "One Less Bell To Answer," "Reach Out For Me," "I Say A Little Prayer For You," "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself," "Always Something There To Remind Me," "Don't Make Me Over" and the Oscar winning "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head."

Steve Tyrell's previous six albums have earned him a number of accolades, his first album "A New Standard" had a 90 week run on the Billboard Jazz charts and "Standard Time" and "This Time Of The Year" and "Songs Of Sinatra" were all Top 5 charters. "The Disney Standards," his last album was released in 2006 and achieved Top 10 status on the Billboard Jazz charts.

"This album is different from any I'll ever do," states Tyrell, who in the last decade has been at the forefront of a renaissance in recordings from the Great American Songbook via his previous six projects. "The music of my friends Burt and Hal has been a lifelong collaboration. Their songs are my songs. It's a very unique situation." "I like to say 'Back to Bacharach' was 40 years in the making," Steve concludes. "There is no other music like this in my life. And I am honored to share it with the world...my way."

"Back to Bacharach" will be released on Tyrell's own New Design Records, distributed by KOCH Records on June 24, 2008.

The Allman Brothers Band, Live At The Atlanta Pop Festival, July 3 & 5, 1970 (4LP 12" vinyl – Individually Numbered – First Time on Vinyl)
The Allman Brothers Band was one of Georgia's top live acts still looking for a national break when they were hired to open the three-day Atlanta International Pop Festival. The band's Southern blues style, bolstered by jams that stretched to epic lengths, won over audiences—and two days later, after legends like Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Winter and B.B. King took the stage, the Allmans were invited back for a second set. Recorded nearly a year before At Fillmore East established them as one of America's hottest bands, fans can now discover these landmark nights in Allman Brothers Band history with this individually numbered, limited edition box set, available on vinyl for the first time and packaged in an oversize slipcase with an eight-page booklet of photos and liner notes.

Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock, It Takes Two: 30th Anniversary Edition (LP – Red Opaque Vinyl)
As hip-hop moved into the mainstream in 1988, Harlem duo Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock changed the game with "It Takes Two," one of the undisputed classic singles of the genre. The group's debut album It Takes Two, which featured the title track as well as the dance hits "Joy and Pain" and "Get On The Dance Floor," has been newly remastered in high definition from the original tapes and pressed on red opaque vinyl—its first appearance on the format since its original release 30 years ago.

Big Audio Dynamite II, On The Road Live '92 (12" Single – First Time on Vinyl)
The Clash's Mick Jones resurrected Big Audio Dynamite with a new lineup in the early 1990s, releasing The Globe, the band's best-selling album in America, in 1991. This five-track EP, available for the first time on vinyl, features performances from live dates in Chicago and New York—including a rendition of the band's U.K. No. 1 single, "Rush."

Jeff Buckley, Live At Sin-̩: Legacy Edition (4LP 12" vinyl РIndividually Numbered РFirst Time on Vinyl)
In a cramped club on the lower east side of Manhattan, armed with only an electric guitar, Jeff Buckley stunned audiences with his mysterious, emotionally uncompromising live sets, packed with eclectic covers and his own originals. The four-track Live At Sin-é EP, released in 1993, was his debut release for Columbia Records; here, it's expanded as a numbered, limited edition in a deluxe hard shell slipcase housing four individually designed LP jackets and an eight-page, full-color booklet of photos and liner notes. Live versions of favorites like "Grace," "Last Goodbye" and Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" appear here on vinyl for the first time.

Johnny Cash, At Folsom Prison: Legacy Edition (5LP 12" vinyl – Individually Numbered – First Time on Vinyl)
"Hello…I'm Johnny Cash." With those four words, The Man in Black solidified his legend as outlaw country pioneer with two spirited sets recorded at Folsom State Prison in 1968 and released as At Folsom Prison, one of the most acclaimed live albums of all time. This special box set includes both full concerts available for the first time on vinyl, including performances by June Carter, Carl Perkins and The Statler Brothers. This numbered deluxe package, featuring individually designed LP jackets packaged in a deluxe hard shell slipcase with an eight-page, 12" x 12" booklet, also includes a bonus 12" single featuring previously unreleased audio of Cash and friends rehearsing at the El Rancho Motel in Sacramento, California, the night before the concerts took place.

Circle Jerks, Gig (LP)
Released during a four-year hiatus for the seminal Los Angeles punk band, Gig features live highlights from the group's tenure on the Combat label during the latter half of the 1980s. Gig is now available on vinyl for the first time in the United States, and features newly-restored album packaging.

Cypress Hill, Black Sunday – Remixes (12" Single)
Celebrate the 25th anniversary of one of the best hip-hop albums of the '90s with this newly-compiled stash of rare remixes from Cypress Hill's breakthrough sophomore album Black Sunday. Includes alternate versions of "Insane In The Brain," "Lick a Shot," "When The Sh-- Goes Down" and "Hits From The Bong," plus the non-album track "Scooby Doo."

Bob Dylan & The Grateful Dead, Dylan & The Dead (LP – Red and Blue Tie-Die Vinyl)
In 1987, two legends joined forces for an unforgettable tour. Now, Dylan & The Dead, featuring The Grateful Dead backing up Bob Dylan on seven of his classic songs, including "All Along The Watchtower," "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" and "Gotta Serve Somebody," is available on red and blue tie-dye vinyl for a trip unlike any other.

Eurythmics, 1984 (For The Love of Big Brother) (LP)
To be released on vinyl in the U.S. only for Record Store Day, the mostly-instrumental soundtrack to the British film adaptation of George Orwell's renowned dystopian novel (also released in 1984) is one of Eurythmics' most experimental works, as well as one of the duo's personal favorites. Annie Lennox and David A. Stewart's diverse electronic stylings accentuate the dark mood of the film, and "Sexcrime (1984)"—which was met with controversy from U.S. radio for its perceived content—became the duo's sixth consecutive U.K. Top 10 hit.

Marvin Gaye, Sexual Healing: The Remixes (12" Single – Red Smoke Vinyl)
In 1983, after a six-year absence from the upper reaches of the pop charts, Marvin Gaye re-established his soul supremacy with "Sexual Healing," an addictive romantic classic and the final pop hit of his lifetime. First released on Both Sides Of The Sky, a new studio album of rare and unissued Hendrix recordings, "Mannish Boy" is issued here as a 45 RPM single backed with "Trash Man," an April 3, 1969 studio recording made by the original Jimi Hendrix Experience. "Trash Man" is drawn from Hear My Music, a Dagger Records "official bootleg" album not sold in stores and otherwise only available to fans via jimihendrix.com.

Hot Tuna, Live At The New Orleans House (2LP – First Time on Vinyl)
Legacy Recordings' Live From The Vaults series uncovers rare and unreleased concerts on vinyl, featuring classic bootleg-inspired jacket design with unique, artist-specific outer wraps (OBIs)! Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen of Jefferson Airplane first conceived Hot Tuna as a loose, easygoing side project showcasing the duo's favorite pre-war country and blues songs in an intimate, acoustic style. Live At The New Orleans House features alternate performances from the same weeklong run of shows in Berkeley, California that were used for the band's self-titled debut in 1970—all released here for the first time on LP!

Living Colour, Live At CBGB's, 12.19.89 (LP – First Time on Vinyl)
Legacy Recordings' Live From The Vaults series uncovers rare and unreleased concerts on vinyl, featuring classic bootleg-inspired jacket design with unique, artist-specific outer wraps (OBIs)! For the first time on LP, experience Living Colour's triumphant homecoming set at the legendary New York City punk club. Recorded at the end of the tour promoting the group's smash debut album Vivid, this hard-driving set also previews songs from the band's next album, Time's Up, released in the summer of 1990.

Kenny Loggins, Return To Pooh Corner (LP – Purple Swirl Vinyl – First Time on Vinyl)
Kenny Loggins' 1994 children's album featured tender, gentle renditions of songs like "Rainbow Connection," "Somewhere Out There" and "Pure Imagination," plus a re-recording of Loggins & Messina's classic "House At Pooh Corner." This album (featuring guest appearances by David Crosby, Graham Nash and Amy Grant) makes its LP debut, pressed on purple swirl vinyl.

Johnny Mathis, I Love My Lady (LP – Clear Smoke Vinyl – First Time on Vinyl)
In 1982, Johnny Mathis attempted one of the biggest gambles of his lengthy career: an album of disco-ready funk and bossa nova tracks, written and produced by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, the founders of CHIC and hitmakers for Sister Sledge, Diana Ross and others. Unreleased for more than 35 years, the legend of I Love My Lady looms large. First released in Mathis' 2017 career-spanning CD box set The Voice of Romance: The Columbia Original Album Collection, I Love My Lady now makes its standalone debut, pressed on clear smoke vinyl and packaged in a jacket that captures the look and feel of a 1982 vintage Columbia Records release.

Thelonious Monk, Monk (LP)
Thelonious Monk's fourth studio album for Columbia Records, released in 1964, featured a sprightly mix of standards ("Just You, Just Me," "April In Paris") and originals ("Teo," a unique arrangement of "Children's Song (That Old Man)"). Monk would use this lineup (himself on piano, Charlie Rouse on tenor sax, Larry Gates on bass and Ben Riley on drums) in the studio and in concert for the next four years. To close Monk's centennial year, rediscover this overlooked gem in his discography, newly remastered at high resolution from the original master tapes.

Van Morrison & Joey DeFrancesco, Close Enough for Jazz b/w The Things I Used to Do (7" Single)
This limited edition 7" single is a collaboration between legendary vocalist Van Morrison and jazz organist Joey DeFrancesco, featuring a new version of Morrison's "Close Enough for Jazz" and a stunning rendition of Guitar Slim's "The Things I Used to Do."

Eddie Murphy, Eddie Murphy: Comedian (LP)
Recorded in Washington, D.C. in the summer of 1983, Saturday Night Live superstar Eddie Murphy's raucous, no-holds-barred stand-up set tackled family barbecues, ice cream trucks and Reaganomics with the one-of-a-kind energy that quickly established him as one of Hollywood's biggest movie stars. That set became the acclaimed stand-up special Delirious and the album Eddie Murphy: Comedian, a Grammy Award winner for Best Comedy Album—now back on vinyl for the first time in more than 30 years!

Pink Floyd, The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn (Mono) (LP)
The psychedelic debut album by Pink Floyd was their sole album completed with original vocalist/guitarist Syd Barrett and featured the early classic "Interstellar Overdrive." The original mono version of Pink Floyd's first LP, named one of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, is available on vinyl for the first time in more than 50 years.

Elvis Presley, The King In The Ring (2LP – Individually Numbered – Red Vinyl – First Time on Vinyl)
Elvis Presley re-established himself as The King of Rock and Roll with ELVIS, the widely-seen "comeback special" broadcast on NBC at the end of 1968. The show's many highlights included laid-back live performances recorded in the round before a small audience and featuring a powerful ensemble—including guitarist Scotty Moore and drummer D.J. Fontana, both part of Elvis' original, classic backing band. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of ELVIS, both electrifying, intimate "sit-down" sets will be released on vinyl for the first time in an individually numbered 2LP package with a newly created gatefold sleeve, pressed on red vinyl. The history of Presley's amazing "comeback special" is told in Elvis Presley: The Searcher, the new documentary premiering April 14 on HBO.

Prodigy, Keep It Thoro (Picture Disc)
As half of the iconic group Mobb Deep, Prodigy (1974-2017) was a key player in New York hip-hop's mid-1990s renaissance, delivering in-depth, uncompromising verses about life in the Queensbridge projects. Certified Classics honors Prodigy's legendary and undisputed legacy with a special picture disc release using the original artwork from his debut hit solo single, 2000's "Keep It Thoro," and featuring instrumental and a cappella versions of the track as well as a remix by Prodigy's Mobb Deep partner Havoc.

Rage Against The Machine, Democratic National Convention 2000 (LP – First Time on Vinyl)
Less than a year after the release of the album The Battle Of Los Angeles, Rage Against The Machine performed a concert in protest of the American political party system across from the Staples Center while the Democratic National Convention was held inside. Rage Against The Machine's set is now available for the first time on vinyl for Record Store Day.

This never-before-heard set features Soul Asylum's hard-driving performance at the legendary Austin venue Liberty Lunch, just months after the release of their breakthrough album Grave Dancers Union.

Bruce Springsteen, Greatest Hits (2LP – Individually Numbered – Red Vinyl)
Originally released in 1995, Greatest Hits was the first collection of powerful hit singles from the first two decades of Bruce Springsteen's career—and kicked off an exciting new chapter in his story with three brand-new songs recorded with The E Street Band after nearly a decade apart. Long unavailable on the vinyl format, this individually numbered 2LP set, pressed on red vinyl, is assembled from the brilliant remasters of Springsteen's discography by Bob Ludwig.

Uncle Tupelo, No Depression – Demos (LP – First Time on Vinyl)
Released in 1990, Uncle Tupelo's debut album No Depression was a genuine milestone in American rock and roll, a striking fusion of traditional folk and country with post-punk innovation and hardcore ferocity. For the first time on vinyl, fans can hear Jeff Tweedy, Jay Farrar and Mike Heidorn's legendary demo tape Not Forever, Just For Now, recorded in 1989, plus a demo of "No Depression" recorded a year prior.

ALBERT KING'S BORN UNDER A BAD SIGN REISSUED WITH BONUS TRACKS

Any list of seminal 1960s electric blues albums is incomplete without Albert King’s Born Under a Bad Sign positioned near the top. The Indianola, Mississippi-born “King of the Blues Guitar,” who cut his professional teeth as a resident of the St. Louis suburb of Lovejoy, Ill., cemented his legacy with his Stax Records debut album. While he’d recorded for labels like Vee-Jay, Parrot and Bobbin, it was his chemistry with the Stax team — label executives Al Bell, Jim Stewart and Estelle Axton, songwriters Booker T. Jones and William Bell, and backing from Booker T. & the MGs and the Memphis Horns — that put King on the blues map.

The Stax Remasters deluxe edition of Born Under a Bad Sign will be released by Stax Records, a unit of Concord Music Group, on April 2nd, 2013. Music historian Bill Dahl wrote the new set of liner notes.

King was influenced by pre-World War II bluesmen Lonnie Johnson and Blind Lemon Jefferson, and post-war artists T-Bone Walker and Howlin’ Wolf. He came to Stax by way of Al Bell, a Little Rock native who’d met King when he played shows in the area. King’s first Stax recording was “Laundromat Blues,” included on this album, backed by Booker T. Jones on piano; Duck Dunn, bass; and Al Jackson, Jr., drums; plus the Memphis Horns (Wayne Jackson and Andrew Love) and Raymond Hill (sax player on Jackie Brenston’s “Rocket 88”). The song had come by way of an unsolicited songwriting demo that Stax co-founder Estelle Axton correctly believed could be a hit for King.

“Crosscut Saw” is one of King’s best-known recordings as yet dated back to 1941 when Delta bluesman Tommy McClennan recorded it for Bluebird, and Willie Sanders & the Binghamton Boys cut it in ’63. A.C. “Moohah” Williams, a veteran DJ at Memphis R&B station WDIA-AM, brought it to King’s attention.

Booker T. Jones and Stax soul singer William Bell came up with the thundering bass riff that defined the title track “Born Under a Bad Sign.” The song notched #49 on the R&B chart in 1967, and was covered in short order by Cream on its 1968 Wheels of Fire album. Soon King himself was playing venues like the Fillmore Auditorium to young white rock audiences.

Another one of the signature tracks, “Oh, Pretty Woman,” written by WDIA DJ Williams, required the steady presence of Steve Cropper’s rhythm guitar to augment King’s lead licks. King received songwriting help from David Porter, on leave from his usual collaboration with Isaac Hayes, on “Personal Manager,” which was the B-side of the title track single.

Born Under a Bad Sign was also notable for its selection of covers. King gave the Jerry Leiber/Mike Stoller R&B standard “Kansas City” an urban blues treatment. He’s right at home with Fenton Robinson’s “As the Years Go Passing By.” Ivory Joe Hunter’s “I Almost Lost My Mind” is a rare King ballad with countrypolitan overtones and jazz flute, an unlikely showcase for his rich baritone.

For this special reissue Stax Records has reached into its vaults to provide previously unissued bonus tracks in the form of alternate takes of “Born Under a Bad Sign,” “Crosscut Saw,” “The Hunter,” “Personal Manager” and an untitled, never-before-released instrumental.

According to annotator Dahl, “Thanks to Born Under a Bad Sign, Albert King became a full-fledged blues luminary, masterfully bridging the gap between the Chitlin’ Circuit and the rock arena. He would make more great Stax albums, but he’d never top this one.”

Albert King will be posthumously inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on April 18, 2013.

Grammy® Award-Winner Bill Charlap Debuts on impulse! Records with Notes From New York

Playing a melody is an art in itself, one that necessitates experience, intuition and humility. In the jazz capitol of the world, New York City, Bill Charlap is considered one of the great interpreters of melodies, songs written for musicals, and Broadway shows or films that when moved from their original source, become the standards that jazz artists make their own.

For his debut impulse! recording, Notes From New York, Charlap has defined and refined his position in the pantheon of New York piano stylists, whose highly influential jazz piano icons include Tommy Flanagan, Hank Jones, and Jimmy Rowles. Tony Bennett, with whom Charlap has recently collaborated with on the Grammy® Award-winning album The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern, effuses further that "in the tradition of Art Tatum, Teddy Wilson, George Shearing, Count Basie and Duke Ellington - Bill Charlap joins them as one of the greatest American musicians of our time."

Charlap has hundreds of songs at his fingertips and he does justice to each one. He is capable of highlighting the subtlety of a phrase, mining the depth of a harmony, while allowing the meaning of the lyric to come through, even in an instrumental context. His touch has a rare elegance, and in this respect he is one of the heirs to a jazz piano tradition whose essential figures include the aforementioned, Jones, Flanagan and Shirley Horn - whom Charlap has known personally - as well as Teddy Wilson, Art Tatum, Ahmad Jamal, Bill Evans and Sonny Clark.

The nine tracks of Notes from New York present the longstanding Bill Charlap Trio (featuring Kenny Washingon and Peter Washington) in peak performance, recorded immediately following a two-week run at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola. The opener is the familiar "I'll Remember April," featuring the spirited brushwork of Kenny Washington, and the closer is a transcendent, solo ballad interpretation of the well-known, "On the Sunny Side of the Street."

The remainder of the album is comprised of standards that are rarely performed, some of them truly hidden treasures. For example, "Make Me Rainbows" is from the original soundtrack of the 1967 film Fitzwilly, which was written by John Williams a few years before he made his name alongside Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. The depth of the groove on this track is a testament to how these three musicians swing as one. "Not a Care in the World," written by Vernon Duke, was a staple of Bobby Short's repertoire at the Café Carlyle. Charlap plays a dancing solo that doubles in intensity when Kenny Washington picks up his sticks. The sublime, "There Is No Music" develops with a poetic sense of space as Charlap expresses a full range of tonal colors. With "A Sleepin' Bee," Charlap delivers a solo that is filled with humor and, it seems, all the unpredictable character of a bumblebee in flight.

Charlap first discovered "Little Rascal on a Rock" on the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis album, New Life. Years later, he received a copy of the piece from Thad's older brother, Hank. On this track, the trio swings with elasticity and precision. The most interior track of the album is the haunting "Too Late Now" by Burton Lane and Alan Jay Lerner, with Peter Washington's poignant bass solo being a highlight. Written by guitarist Tiny Grimes and made immortal by Charlie Parker, "Tiny's Tempo," reminds us that bebop is an integral part of the trio's musical world.

Charlap has drawn material from the American Popular Songbook for many of his recordings, including albums devoted to the music of George Gershwin, Leonard Bernstein, Duke Ellington, Hoagy Carmichael, Irving Berlin, Richard Rodgers and Cole Porter. He continues to celebrate his love of song, while leading the trio he formed in 1997, with bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington. The trio has a peerless understanding of the major figures of their respective instruments, and the chemistry between them stands as one of the great rhythm sections of our time. Their integrity is unwavering, and they project an effortless virtuosity. The experience of hearing the Bill Charlap Trio live is electrifying.

Early in his career, Charlap was championed by two saxophone giants - Gerry Mulligan and Phil Woods - who appreciated his talent, his assurance as an accompanist, the finesse of his playing, and his unfailing sense of swing. Charlap's connection to standards is in his blood: his father was Broadway composer Moose Charlap, and his mother, Sandy Stewart, is a Grammy® Award-nominated singer who toured with Benny Goodman.

Composers and lyricists including Yip Harburg, Charles Strouse, and Alan and Marilyn Bergman would often visit Charlap's family home, and yet that context only partly explains the intimate nature of the relationship that the pianist shares with this repertoire. Charlap also learned from his experiences playing with such elder masters as Benny Carter, Clark Terry, Jim Hall, Dick Hyman, Eddie Locke and Frank Wess who further taught him how to reveal the riches that exist in this music.

From the Village Vanguard to the Café Carlyle, Bradley's, The Knickerbocker, High School for the Performing Arts, The 92nd St Y, Lincoln Center, The Hit Factory, Nola Studios, Carnegie Hall, The Village Gate, Town Hall, The Algonquin, and The Apollo Theatre, Bill Charlap is the sound of his city. Notes from New York is confirmation that the Bill Charlap Trio has arrived at its destination.
