2013 Newport Jazz Festival® Continues Its Distinguished History with a Dynamic Mix of Jazz Legends and Emerging Artists

One year away from celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Newport Jazz Festival®, George Wein, producer and Chairman of the Newport Festivals Foundation, Inc.™, today announced the program for the 2013 Newport Jazz Festival® presented by Natixis Global Asset Management (NGAM). This year's event will be held in Newport, RI, on August 2 atthe International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino and August 3 - 4 at historic Fort Adams State Park.

Founded in 1954 as the first annual jazz festival in America, the Newport Jazz Festival has been host to numerous legendary performances by some of the world's leading established and emerging artists. The storied tradition continues on this year's slate, with saxophonist Wayne Shorter's 80th Birthday Celebration featuring the Wayne Shorter Quartet with Danilo Perez, John Patitucci and Brian Blade plus special guest Herbie Hancock; Chick Corea (fronting The Vigil Band); Eddie Palmieri (with his Salsa Orchestra); Roy Haynes (leading his Fountain of Youth Band); Joshua Redman; Michel Camilo; Terence Blanchard and others sharing the festival bill with rising stars Esperanza Spalding; Gregory Porter; Robert Glasper; Edmar Castañeda; Hiromi; and Jon Batiste. On opening night at the International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino, multiple Grammy Award® winning singer Natalie Cole is on the same bill as her uncle, renowned singer and pianist Freddy Cole, a special guest of the Bill Charlap Trio. With the 60th anniversary of the Newport Jazz Festival fast approaching, thousands of fans will no doubt reflect on some of the historical highlights of the event that have become, through memory, recordings and film, touchstones of the American cultural landscape. Two of the most famous performances in the festival's history are Miles Davis' 1955 solo on "'Round Midnight" and the Duke Ellington Orchestra's lengthy 1956 performance of "Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue," featuring a 27-chorus saxophone solo by Paul Gonsalves. The 1964 album Miles & Monk at Newport documented respective appearances by Davis in 1958 and Thelonious Monk in 1963; Davis' band included John Coltrane and Monk's featured Pee Wee Russell.

Other early performances documented on commercially released recordings include the 1957 appearances by Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Carmen McRae (Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday at Newport, 1958); those by the Gigi Gryce-Donald Byrd Jazz Laboratory and the Cecil Taylor Quartet featuring Steve Lacy, released on At Newport also in 1958; and performances at the 1960 festival by Muddy Waters and Nina Simone, released as the albums At Newport 1960 and Nina Simone at Newport.

Films chronicling the Newport Jazz experience include "Jazz on a Summer Day," a documentary of the 1958 festival which includes sets by Dave Brubeck, Ray Charles and Miles Davis; and a film released by Storyville of the 1962 event which featured Lambert, Hendricks & Bavan, the Oscar Peterson Trio, Roland Kirk, Duke Ellington and the Count Basie Orchestra featuring Jimmy Rushing.

Pianist/composer Kevin Harris thrives on interaction and collaboration; "participation," he says, "is what keeps our souls alive." This attitude, not to mention his immense talent, has led to prolific sideman work with the likes of trumpeter Avishai Cohen, Steve Langone, Eddie Gomez Marco Pignataro, Carlos Averhoff Jr., Richie Barshay, Duane Eubanks, Ben Street, Ralph Peterson, Ralph Bowen, Jason Palmer, Jerry Bergonzi, Cecil McBee, Francisco Mela, Bob Moses, Warren Wolf, George Garzone and Terri Lyne Carrington.

Most recently, Harris has been invited by Danilo Perez for the second year to participate as a performer and clinician at The Panama Jazz Festival. Harris will also be in Europe, where he has toured since 2008, where he is scheduled to conduct clinics and concerts. He will also be performing at the Cambridge River Jazz Festival with Terri Lyne Carrington on June 1, 2013. Harris has released three albums under his own leadership, The Butterfly Chronicles (2007), Freedom Doxology (2008) and Chapters (2010). On February 26, 2013, Harris proudly releases his new recording, Museum Vol. 1, a collection of original compositions, or "exhibits", plus songs by Bob Marley and Wayne Shorter, featuring Richie Barshay, Steve Langone (drums), Kendall Eddy (acoustic bass), Jason Palmer (trumpet), Rick DiMuzio (tenor saxophone) and himself on piano, Fender Rhodes and vocals.

Kevin Harris' life and music are lessons in duality, in the idea of having your cake and eating it too. The pianist/composer simultaneously embraces and expresses the influence of Thelonious Monk, Wayne Shorter, Charlie Parker and Danilo Perez, alongside J.S. Bach, Beethoven, Scott Joplin, and the folkloric rhythms of Cuba. Harris' playing, his very being, also presents a contrast informed by geography: the understated elegance, soulfulness and deep personal family history of his native Kentucky coalesces with the elevated energy and hustle and bustle of his adopted home town, Boston, Massachusetts (and New York City, where he is spending part of his time these days), to form a highly unique person and musician. Harris has also garnered praise and recognition for his distinctive combination of traditional and contemporary music, within which he consistently, and naturally, explores these various elements of his life.

With the upcoming release of Museum Vol. 1, Harris introduces us to another side of his artistry, the influence and "collaboration" with visual art, specifically its presentation, inspired by his wife's, and now his, love and passion for art. The album is, "a personal collection of concepts in song form, with each piece an exhibition for you to experience," explains Harris. He elaborated, "imagine a museum occupied with exhibits of your most courageous dreams and your most challenging fears. In each room, hang collections and recollections of continually changing architecture that perfectly frame your greatest adventures past, present, and future."

Museum Vol. 1 opens majestically with Exhibit 1, "The Nile", a song about our similarities with the great river, and about embracing the changing tides of our daily lives to find the flow and patterns that make us stronger. It is followed by "Pinched Nerve", a contemporary blues celebration about a painful pinched nerve that Harris battled with and won. Up next is Wayne Shorter's "Prince of Darkness", that for Harris is, "one of the many compositions that invokes the courageous spirit that art is fluid, powerful and cannot be measured."

"Darkness" is followed by sunshine, as in, "You Are My Sunshine"; a brilliant, adventurous arrangement dedicated to Harris' wife Luisa. "She is a sincere and joyful mirror never afraid to express her thoughts. My newfound appreciation and perspective for museums pretty much rests as a result of her honest and unapologetic passion for art that challenges complacency. Her perspective on our friendship is equally honest. One of her favorite works of art is an oil canvas by the surrealist Salvador Dali titled "The Metamorphosis of Narcissus." Infatuated with his own image in a pool of water, Narcissus passed the days fixated on his image unable to break away. It's easy to become fixated on what we label important but there's nothing better than a friend in life to keep you honest and changing. Luisa is without question, that very special friend for me. Not only should she receive the credit for inspiring this arrangement but she also gets credit for the title of this album," said Harris.

Museum Vol. 1 continues with Exhibit 5, "The Dinosaur Suite", an eerily evocative tune that Harris explains straightforwardly, "enjoy the exhibit and try to stay alive". Harris is an artist that is comfortable taking on social issues, and is a pianist that is more than comfortable singing, as we hear in his heartfelt vocals on Bob Marley's masterpiece, "Redemption Song." In the liner notes to this album, Harris poses some very important questions in relation to this song, such as, "what forms of slavery still exist in our times and what are we doing about it?", and "how do we assist the meek amongst our social and economic ranks to move forward triumphantly?".

Mr. Kevin Harris eloquently explains the last two "exhibits" on the recording, which both display a profound personal meaning for him: Exhibit 7, Bluegrass. Description: A tulip poplar tree in the center of the room with a northern cardinal perched at its top and a viceroy butterfly at its base. I hope that when you enter this room, the first thing you'll feel is a soft summer breeze across your face, a breeze that carries a peaceful melody. Yes, this melody conveys the depth of my Kentucky roots. Roots that are an immovable strength that stem from my mother, father, brothers, uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, grandmothers, and grandfathers. Roots that spring forth from the unwavering faith of my teachers and the steadfast promise of my ancestors who did not toil in vain. There is an indescribable beauty, strength, and pain that flow from the history of my home state. A beauty that is rich and courageous in its landscape. A beauty that is also dark and haunting that has taught me to hold my head high.

If one could manage to capture the soulful articulations of Aretha Franklin and James Brown and put them in a huge wooden pot, mix them with the intricate dialogue of Los Munequitos de Matanzas, add the wonderfully seasoned aroma of my mothers green beans and Charles Little's peach cobbler, add two tablespoons of my fathers strong embrace, pour 1/2 cup of my 2011 family reunion joyfulness, thoroughly mix this jubilant combination briskly while pouring its contents into a dual cassette boombox and this song is what you'd get! Side A, press play . . .

One of the captivating elements of his group is the level of comfort and understanding they have with one another as they dive into passionate music conversations as well as playful exchanges. Both his live performances and his recordings reflect Harris's determination to capture his audience through thoughtful music interactions and soaring solo sections.

Harris performs at renowned national and international venues such as The Blue Note (NYC and Milan), Scullers Jazz Club, The Regatta Bar, Wang Theatre, Jordan Hall, Berklee Performance Center, Wally's Jazz Café and many others. He has also participated at Jazz Festivals in Panama, Havana, and Boston.

Kevin holds a master's degree in jazz performance from the New England Conservatory and an undergraduate degree in music education (Morehead State University, KY). At The NEC, he studied with Fred Hersch, Mike Cain, Cecil McBee, George Garzone, and Danilo Perez, and performed with George Russell, Benny Golson and Bob Brookmeyer. After graduation, Harris worked at defining himself and his music through partnerships with key musicians and also studying and arranging the music of masters in the jazz and classical realms. The perpetual search for growth and new expression is clearly evident on his recorded works.

Harris is currently on the faculty at Berklee College of Music where he teaches piano, jazz ensembles, and summer theory classes; in previous years he has also taught classes at the Boston Arts Academy, and collaborated with the North Eastern University Fusion Art's Program teaching students from Brazil, India, and South Africa. Committed to the community and to getting youth involved in music, Kevin has conducted clinics and master classes in both public and private schools throughout the USA and abroad. In 2000 he started five separate band programs with help from "Arts In Progress," a Boston based arts organization.

MODERN SOUNDS FROM ITALY 3


A rich document of the growth in the Italian jazz scene in recent years – a great leap forward not just for individual musicians, but also for the Schema label as well! Schema first began in the 90s with a relatively programmed approach to jazz – a style that loved the classics, but often reworked them in modern production modes. Yet over the years, the company’s really come to be a key home for real jazz and soulful sounds – moving past their original remix identity, to a point where they’re arguably one of the most important jazz labels on the European scene! This nicely-priced batch of tracks is a great illustration of that growth – and features a few old Schema faves, mixed with newer artists who’ve flocked to the label in recent years – presented here in some unique remixes and other nice versions we haven’t heard before. NPR MUSIC AND WGBO PRESENT THE CHECKOUT - LIVE AT BERKLEE WITH JALEEL SHAW


The Checkout – Live at Berklee, which brings critically acclaimed, New York-based Berklee alumni back to their alma mater for concerts in the Red Room at Cafe 939, continues on Thursday, February 7 with rising alto and soprano saxophonist Jaleel Shaw, a 2000 Berklee graduate. Shaw will be performing with alumnus pianist Lawrence Fields, bassist Boris Kozlov, and drummer Johnathan Blake.

Presented by NPR Music and WBGO Jazz 88.3 FM, the shows will be webcast live worldwide in high definition video over NPRmusic.org and on the radio in New York over WBGO-FM as a special edition of The Checkout, the acclaimed multimedia show featuring what’s new on New York’s jazz scene. They will also be archived, and available for on-demand listening, at NPRmusic.org, and Checkoutjazz.org.

Saxophonist Jaleel Shaw is a member of the Roy Haynes Quartet and the Mingus Big Band, and has performed with Christian McBride, Jason Moran, Stefon Harris, Roy Hargrove, Dave Holland, Jimmy Cobb, and more. Upon graduating from high school in his native Philadelphia, Shaw received a full-tuition scholarship to attend Berklee, where he graduated with degrees in music education and performance. At Berklee, he received the Billboard Endowed Scholarship, two Woodwind Department Awards, the Outstanding Student Teacher Award, and the Boston Jazz Society Award. Shaw then earned a master's in jazz performance from the Manhattan School of Music in New York.

Shaw’s 2005 debut CD, Perspective, received rave reviews in the New York Times and Jazzwise and was named one of the top five debuts of the year by All About Jazz. That year, Shaw joined the Roy Haynes Quartet, and was featured on Haynes’s 2006 Grammy-nominated recording, Whereas. In 2008, Shaw started his own label, Changu Records, on which he released his second album, Optimism. He has received two ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Awards, and was nominated for Alto Saxophonist of the Year in the Jazz Times 2011 Readers Poll.

JACK DEJOHNETTE - SPECIAL EDITION: SPECIAL EDITION / TIN CAN ALLEY / INFLATION BLUES / ALBUM ALBUM (4-CD SET)

A quadruple-header of a set – four great albums together in one cool box! First up is the first album from the great Special Edition group of drummer Jack DeJohnette – a wickedly sharp record that's as equally tight on the reeds as it is on the drums! The album features brilliant work on tenor and bass clarinet from David Murray, and equally nice alto from Arthur Blythe – both criss-crossing and soaring out effortlessly in each others' company – amidst complex rhythmic impulses from DeJohnette on drums, and both bass and cello from Peter Warren. Jack also plays a bit of piano and melodica as well – and titles include "One For Eric", "Zoot Suite", "Central Park West", "India", and "Journey To The Twin Planet".

On Tin Can Alley, the great Chico Freeman really shines with drummer Jack DeJohnette – lending his tenor, flute, and bass clarinet to the album – and helping make it a really reed-heavy affair! John Purcell's also in the frontline with Chico – playing alto, baritone, and flute – and in addition to Peter Warren's bass and cello, the album Jack DeJohnette also plays drums, congas, piano, and organ too! The range of instrumentation almost echoes some Chicago AACM roots at times – but with that tighter focus that musicians like Jack were bringing to their work at ECM – and titles include "Riff Raff", "The Gri Gri Man", "I Know", and "Pastel Rhapsody".

Inflation Blues is a record that bristles with energy right from the start – spurred on by the creative rhythms that have always made Jack DeJohnette one of the most inventive drummers of his time! The group features a triple-threat lineup with Baikida Carroll on trumpet, Chico Freeman on tenor and soprano sax, and John Purcell on alto, baritone, flute, and clarinet – especially nice at points when the reedmen shift and turn with sharp edges learned from the earlier avant years, yet given a nice focus here under DeJohnette's leadership. Jack penned all original tunes for the set, and there's a depth to his writing that really marks a move forward – possibly some of his richest musical statements on record ever! Titles include "Ebony", "Inflation Blues", "Slowdown", and "The Islands".

Album Album is a  record that really dives deep with a rich mix of creative rhythms and inventive horn lines! The album still has Jack staying true to his more avant roots – working with tenor from David Murray, alto and soprano sax from John Purcell, baritone and tuba from Howard Johnson, and bass from Rufus Reid – a lineup that's a bit bigger than on other Special Edition albums, and which is used to fill in even more colors and deeper elements than before. A fantastic bit of space age funk – and maybe one of the greatest moments ever from Philly Soul maestro Dexter Wansel! The album goes way beyond any of Wansel's other work – and blends his warm soulful styles with some of the more keyboard-oriented funk that was coming out of the Herbie Hancock camp during the mid 70s – a vibe that's every bit as electric and spacey as you'd guess from the cover! Some cuts have a bit more of a soul focus, but others have loads of jazzy keyboards from Dexter – driven on by some great drums at points too. Titles include Wansel's legendary version of "Theme From the Planets" with the much sampled breakbeat at the beginning – plus the funky "Life On Mars", and the tracks "One Million Miles From The Ground", "You Can Be What You Wanna Be", "Prophet Named KG", "Rings Of Saturn", and "Stargazer".  ~ Dusty Groove


MOSTLY OTHER PEOPLE DO THE KILLING - SLIPPERY ROCK

Marvelous work from Mostly Other People Do The Killing – and a record that's quite different from its cheesy looking cover! The quartet never fail to amaze us with their creative energy – and this time around, they're paying homage to that moment in 80s jazz when the underground was brimming up in the mainstream – that great point when creative musicians were finding wider exposure on labels like Columbia, Novus, or Blue Note – yet still serving up sounds that were true to their roots. The cheesy packaging is a nod to the visual aesthetics of the time – and the music is a great contrast, which was not uncommon for the period – lots of sharp reeds from Jon Irabagon, percolatedly soulful trumpet riffs from Peter Evans, snapping percussion from Kevin Shea, and these warm, round, deep lines on acoustic bass from Moppa Elliott – who also wrote and produced the set. Titles include "Sayre", "President Polk", "Can't Tell Shipp From Shohola", "Hearts Content", "Jersey Shore", and "Dexter, Wayne, & Mobley". ~ Dusty Groove

MAL WALDRON - LEFT ALONE

A beautiful album by Mal Waldron – recorded in 1960, after the passing of Billie Holiday, and a very loving tribute by Waldron, who was her accompanist for a number of years. The set moves way past the usual "Holiday songbook" mode, and features instead a dark batch of tracks, two written by Waldron – "Minor Pulsation" and "Cat Walk" – a third written by him and Holiday, the famous tune "Left Alone". Jackie McLean plays some fantastic alto sax on the album's version of "Left Alone", and the rest of the tracks are trio tracks played by Waldron, Julian Euell, and Al Dreares. The set also features one very strange track – "Mal Waldron: The Way He Remembers Billie Holiday" – which is an interview with Waldron about Billie! And sure, there were many cash-in records after Billie Holiday died, but this is one of the best, and it comes from a very legitimate source! Sultan's a player who doesn't always get his due on record – especially during this formative generation – so the release is a much-needed look at his mighty talents back in the day – and a picture of a very underground level of American jazz that goes deeper than even some of the more-recorded avant players of the time! CRIOLO - NO NA ORELHA

really compelling blend of sounds – and a set that's billed as a hip hop album, but which is way way more than that – more a wonderful hybrid of global styles, all wrapped up with the crispness of the contemporary Brazilian underground! The set begins with a number that's straight out Afro Funk, the rolls into tracks that really run the gamut – a hip hop number or two, other African styles, and most especially, some of those cool genre-defying moments that we've really come to love from Brazil in recent years. DAVID MURRAY - MING

Beautifully arranged work from David Murray – an important early large group recording, one that really helped point the way to some of his later genius! The session features Murray leading an all-star octet that includes Henry Threadgill on alto, Olu Dara on trumpet, Butch Morris on cornet, George Lewis on trombone, Anthony Davis on piano, Wilbur Morris on bass, and Steve McCall on percussion. Tracks are a very hip set of original compositions that display an incredible range of soulful feeling and expression – and which open a door to a whole new chapter of Murray's career. PETE JOLLY - SWEET SEPTEMBER

Great work from one of the grooviest pianists of the 60s – a player who could always keep things lively and swinging, even in a small combo session! The album's one of Pete Jolly's gems for the Ava label – a follow-up to his semi-hit Little Bird, and like that one, a record done with some slight additional help from Howard Roberts on a few tracks. But this time around, Roberts' work is only on a few of the titles – leaving Pete's core trio to take over most of the grooves themselves, building strongly from warmly rolling rhythms by Chuck Berghofer on bass and Larry Bunker on drums, topped by Jolly's surprisingly soulful lines on piano – all in a blend that reminds us of the great balance between lyricism and groove we always find in the best work of Vince Guaraldi. Titles include "Sweet September", "Can't We Be Friends", "Any Number Can Win", "Soft Winds", "Oleo", "Yours Is My Heart Alone", "I'm Beginning To See The Light", and "Kiss Me Baby". ~ Dusty Groove

ODELL BROWN - ODELL BROWN

A wonderful album by Odell Brown – recorded years after he broke up with his Organizers group, with a sweet electric groove that's very different than his Chess LPs – and also quite a bit different from other records on Paula in the mid 70s! Odell's playing electric piano on the set – grooving in a mellow funky way that reminds us of some of the early 70s Young-Holt albums, no surprise, since Odell and the Young-Holt team came out of the same scene. The tracks are nice and long, and nearly all originals. It kicks off a killer cover, though: an 11 minute jazzy soul take on Stevie Wonder's "I Love Every Little Thing About You" – and it also includes "South of 63rd", "Simizzoke", "Song Theme" and "Tasha". ~ Dusty Groove

NEW RELEASES - FREDA PAYNE, DANNY WOODS, MANDRILL

FREDA PAYNE - REACHING OUT

It's a few years after Freda's big hit "Band of Gold", and she's recording here in a very different mode! The record is produced by Holland-Dozier-Holland, with arrangements by a number of different talents, like McKinley Jackson, Tony Camillo, and Michael Smith – and the overall sound is much more sophisticated than on some of Freda's earlier work. The vocals are especially sharp – quite mature, and almost in a mode that points towards later work by singers like Jean Carn or Marlena Shaw during the late 70s. Includes the nice midtempo groover "We've Gotta Find A Way Back To Love", worth the price of the album alone – plus "Mood For Love", "Reaching Out", "Two Wrongs Don't Make A Right", "Mother Misery's Favorite Child", and "Right Back Where I Started From". ~ Dusty Groove

DANNY WOODS - ARIES

A rare solo effort from Danny Woods – a record cut away from Chairmen Of The Board during a stretch when the group had temporarily disbanded – and an excellent showcase for Danny's strength on his own! Woods is really wonderful here – with a proud, righteous quality that really soars out away from General Johnson and Harrison Kennedy – perfect for the righteous backings arranged by HB Barnum and McKinley Jackson – whose spirits really fit some of the more progressive modes of the music. There's plenty of upbeat, positive moments throughout – and titles include "Two Can Be As Lonely As One", "Let Me Ride", "It Didn't Take Long", "Everybody's Got A Song To Sing", "Working On A Building Of Love", and "Roller Coaster". CD also features the bonus track "Everybody's Tippin".  ~ Dusy Groove

MANDRILL -WE ARE ONE

Wonderfully tight work from Mandrill – a real standout from the years at Arista – and a set that seems to take all the key instrumental energy of the Polydor years, and focus it on a soulful groove that's even more soaring than before! The energy is wonderful – very much like the best Earth Wind & Fire ensemble sound at the time, with perhaps a Fatback-ish funky element at the bottom – and there's some surprising elements from track to track that really create a great sense of variety and depth – way more than you'd find from some of the group's contemporaries. A few moments get nice and spacey, too – and titles include "Gilly Hines", "Holiday", "Closer To You", "Funky Monkey", "Happy Beat", "Love One Another", and "Can You Get It". The set's one of the real standouts in the 70s Strata East lineup – and in addition to work on both acoustic and electric bass from Ridley, the session also features soaring work on reeds from Sonny Fortune, who plays soprano sax, alto, and flute – plus wicked keyboards from Onaje Allan Gumbs, whose Fender Rhodes lines are some of the real highlights of the record – and guitar from Cornell Dupree, drums from Grady Tate, and a bit of percussion from Erroll Crusher Bennett. The record's got exactly the kind of spiritual vibe you'd expect – and does a great job of stepping between acoustic and electric focus. JON LUNDBOM & BIG FIVE CHORD - NO NEW TUNES

We're not sure what to make of the title – but to our ears, everything here sounds plenty new and plenty fresh – the kind of creative guitar-driven work we've come to expect from Jon Lundbom and his cool contemporaries from the Mostly Other People Do The Killing side of the universe! The group here also features Jon Irabagon on alto and soprano sax, Bryan Murray on tenor and balto sax, Moppa Elliott on bass, and Dan Monaghan on drums – and there's an intensity to the music right from the start – a blistering sort of energy that almost takes us back to some of the most creative downtown jazz experiments of the New York scene in the early 80s. SEUNG-HEE - SKETCHES ON THE SKY

Beautiful work from Seung-Hee – a vocalist who splits her time between Korea and North America, and who has a scope of sound that really lives up to her global stance! Seung-Hee has a really classic approach – not 50s torch, but that really inventive period of the 70s, when female jazz vocalists were really breaking free – finding new ways to inflect their notes, and often adding their own words too – in ways that made the music even more expressive than before! Seung-Hee's got a great way with a tune, and turns in some excellent compositions here – including a few set to music by Bill Evans and Charlie Haden – often with that freewheeling mix of breezy and soulful styles that we love in our favorite European jazz vocalists from years back. This album's a great step forward for the singer – and may well put her in a lineage that includes the best work by singers like Sheila Jordan, Monica Linges, and Karin Krog. Titles include "Sketc Part 2", "I'll Be Here", "Winter & Then", "Valparaiso", "An Elliptical Note", "By The Sea", "Visions", and a version of Edo Lobo's "Pra Dizer Adeus". ~ Dusty Groove

JEREMY STEIG - WAYFARING STRANGER

A mindblower from flute man Jeremy Steig – his only album ever for Blue Note – and quite possibly his best! There's a stripped-down feel here that beats even the rich soul of Steig's sets for Solid State – a brilliant pairing of Jeremy's choppy lines on flute with the soulful bass of Eddie Gomez – amazing interplay that really sets the record on edge right from the start – and gives things this raw funky feel that's even different than other Blue Note dates of the time! If you dig Steig's funky flute on other records, you'll totally love it here – and in addition to Eddie's great round, deep, soulful lines on bass – the set also features heavy drums from Don Alias, and some shadings on guitar from Sam Brown – a pair who are perfectly picked to round out the quartet. Tracks are all nice and long, and have a feel that's freewheeling, yet still funkily focused too – almost an electric vibe, although both Jeremy and Eddie's instruments aren't electrified at all – just their souls and spirits! A gem through and through – with great cuts that include "All Is One", "In The Beginning", "Waves", "Space", "Mint Tea", and "Wayfaring Stranger". (On the Dusty Groove label.) ~ Dusty Groove

MCCOY TYNER - INNER VOICES

A beautifully full session from McCoy Tyner – one recorded with added horns and voices, and very much in the mode of some of Horce Silver's best 70s experiments for Blue Note! The sound is as bold, dynamic, and soulful as other Tyner albums from the time – and the added elements really help create a unique feeling – horn parts that underscore the power of Tyner's piano, and wordless vocals that rise to the skies, with a feel similar to Donald Byrd or Max Roach sessions like this – but with a bit more 70s vibe overall. Other players include Earl Klugh on guitar, Ron Carter on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – and solos are by Jon Faddis on trumpet, Alex Foster on tenor, and Charles Stephens on trombone. Titles include "For Tomorrow", "Opus", "Festival In Bahia", "Rotunda", and "Uptown". ~ Dusty Groove



DAVE PIKE - BOSSA NOVA CARNIVAL

A pair of killers from Dave Pike – early work in a tremendous career in music! First up is Bossa Nova Carnival – a sublime set of bossa nova numbers, all written by the bossa pianist Joao Donato! Joao doesn't actually play on the record, but his compositions here are enough – as they help Pike find a new sense of space and pulse in his music – rhythms that really unlock his vibes towards their grooviest ends for the first time ever on record. Most numbers are heavily modal – a great mix with the bossa setting – and the album also features key work from Clark Terry on flugelhorn, Kenny Burrell on guitar, and Chris White on bass – whose loping lines really help shape the overall sound of the record. Also features lots of nice percussion – and titles include "Ginha", "Samba Lero", "Sono", "Carnival Samba", "Sausalito", and "Melvalita". Limbo Carnival isn't some early 60s gimmick session, designed to cash in on a dance craze – and instead, it's a wonderful early Latin set from the great vibist Dave Pike! In fact, given the strength of the grooves here, it would be plenty darn hard to do any limbo action to this one – because the rhythms are bouncy, modal, and very very groovy – served up by Pike on vibes, in a lineup that includes Ray Barretto on conga, Ahmed Abdul-Malik on bass, and Leo Wright on flute and alto – plus a few other straight jazz players like Jimmy Raney on guitar and Tommy Flanagan on piano. Tracks include "Mambo Bounce", "Matilda", "Cattin Latin", "St. Thomas", and a strange groovy version of "La Bamba". ~ Dusty Groove

ELAN TROTMAN SCORES BIG WITH TROPICALITY, STAR-STUDDED RELEASE SET FOR FEBRUARY 19

Tropicality is Barbados native Elan Trotman’s sixth solo album produced by both Trotman and guitarist Peter White, and it features 12 tracks recorded in Los Angeles, Boston, and Barbados. Trotman’s goal on this set was to bring the influence of the Caribbean to the masses - and he sure does succeed here. Trotman wrote or co-wrote seven of the collection’s nine original and selected a few covers, including the first single hitting radio – Stevie Wonder’s “Master Blaster”. With a refreshing and smooth sound, Tropicality  boasts not only smooth jazz, but also some reggae (“Master Blaster (Jammin’), Bob Marley’s “Wait in Vain”), as well as Caribbean zouk (Danca Ku Mi (Dance With Me).   After my first listen, I added all of the tracks to my Ipod and Itunes playlists.

Recording in three widely diverse cities afforded Trotman the opportunity to draw upon an international superstar talent pool that includes fellow compatriot and Barbados-born bassist and producer Nicholas Branker, British guitarist Peter White, French guitarist U-Nam, Brazilian guitarist Fabiano Da Silva, Arubian guitarist Serghio Hansen, Cuban percussionist Luis Conte, as well as an accomplished American contingent consisting of keyboarding and producer Jeff Lorber, guitarist and producer Paul Brown, guitarist Nick Colionne, drummers Terri Lynn Carrington, Ricky Lawson, and Tony Moore, trumpeter Lin Roundtree, bassist Alex Al and percussionist Lenny Castro.

Tropicality follows on the success of his 2011 release, Love And Sax, a Billboard Top 20 contemporary jazz album that spawned the single “Heaven In Your Eyes,” a duet that features keyboardist Brian Simpson, which reached #11 on Billboard’s jazz songs chart. Trotman is the three-time winner of the New England Urban Music Award as Best Jazz Male, the 2011 Barbados Music Award Instrumentalist of the Year, and was twice nominated for a Boston Music Award.

RICHARD KINCAID / DAVE KOZ - I WISH THAT WAS ME

Chicago-based emerging artist Richard Kincaid  heats things up in 2013 with his new single "I Wish That Was Me" featuring the soothing saxophone sounds by Grammy-nominated icon Dave Koz. The track is set to hit FMQB's Adult Contemporary Chart January 14 and be added to Mediabase January 28. Kincaid says, "If you've ever loved someone that didn't love you back, this song is for you!" The powerful track is written by multi-talented songwriter/producer David Taylor II, who collaborated with Kincaid on his recently released full-length independent debut album Mosaic."From literally the first moment I heard Richard Kincaid sing, I knew he had a real gift," praises Taylor. "In 2012, I've had incalculable amounts of fun stretching my songwriting muscles in providing material for him; in 2013, we want the world to take note of one of the most intriguing vocal artists to come along in quite some time."

Kincaid lit up the charts this past holiday season with his single "This Christmas (*Mistletoe)" -- an R&B-driven remake of Donny Hathaway's Christmas classic. The holiday track, which features vocals by Cuba Gooding, Sr. of the famed soul group The Main Ingredient, also held in the Top 20 on the main Mediabase AC Chart and Mediabase AC Christmas Chart for several weeks putting Kincaid as the only independent artist in company with superstars on the chart such as Rod Stewart, Lady Antebellum, Michael Bublé, Cee Lo Green and Train.

Both songs appear on Mosaic, which includes eight powerfully produced cover songs (from a rousing gospel-tinged version of Elton John's "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" to "Tracks of My Tears"), plus four original tracks by Taylor. The album was released on Taylor's House of DT Records label.

DJANGO UNCHAINED ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK

If Quentin Tarantino's complete immersion in the schlock of the '60s and '70s no longer seems as surprising as it did in the '90s, there is no denying that his accomplishment at repurposing has only grown over the years. Take the soundtrack for Django Unchained, his "Southern" about a slave out to rescue his wife from an evil plantation owner. Tarantino relies on selections from spaghetti Westerns, including the theme from 1966's exploitation classic Django (quite explicitly the inspiration for QT's titular character), '70s funk and pop, '60s exotica, heaps of quoted film scores, and a hefty dose of new songs that deftly tweak these very sounds. Most previous Tarantino soundtracks relied heavily on the past but here there is a strong dose of the present arriving in the form of hip-hop and R&B, a tacit acknowledgment that he's dealing with tricky racial issues in this film and it's best to cushion the blow with some modern music. Of course, it helps that most of these new additions either directly reference the film's plot -- Rick Ross' "100 Black Coffins" -- or blend the past and the present in a fashion not dissimilar to Tarantino's filmmaking (John Legend's "Who Did That to You?," Anthony Hamilton's "Freedom"). But the true pleasure of Django Unchained is hearing how it swings from this retro-soul to Jerry Goldsmith and Ennio Morricone scores to Jim Croce's "I Got a Name," stopping along the way for choice excerpts from the film's dialogue. It spans decades and styles but it's held together by Tarantino's vision, not unlike the film itself. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

MIKE BLOOMFIELD / AL KOOPER / STEVE STILLS - SUPER SESSION

A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer, keyboardist, and producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time -- nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").

All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." The only real disappointment here is that Stills, a far better singer than Kooper, never opens his mouth.

Those familiar with the Live Adventures album these two recorded at the Fillmore West know how brilliant they could be on stage, and here's another gem, recorded at the Fillmore East this time and featuring 'One Way Out,' 'It's My Own Fault' (with Bloomfield trading licks with Johnny Winter...
