Myles Sanko’s Let It Unfold: A Bold Step Towards Artistic Independence and Personal Growth

Myles Sanko has always walked his own path in the world of Soul/Funk music, and with his latest album Let It Unfold, he takes a monumental leap forward—both creatively and personally. After releasing Memories of Love in 2021, which left a lasting impression with its fusion of soul, jazz, and hip-hop, Sanko’s newest work marks a continuation of his musical evolution. For Let It Unfold, Sanko has embraced full creative control, handling everything from writing, composing, and arranging to recording, mixing, and producing the album through his own label, 213 Music.

This album is a deeply personal reflection of Sanko’s journey, addressing themes of self-acceptance, healing, and embracing vulnerability. For Sanko, Let It Unfold serves not just as a musical project but as a form of therapy—an opportunity to confront past childhood traumas and empower himself toward future dreams. The title itself is symbolic of the gradual process of personal growth and emotional healing, inviting listeners to experience Sanko’s path to self-love, one song at a time.

Drawing inspiration from his Ghanaian roots and his love for soul, jazz, and hip-hop, Sanko masterfully blends these influences to create a contemporary sound all his own. The resulting album feels rich with emotional depth and authenticity, showcasing his ability to merge genres seamlessly while preserving his unique artistic vision. His approach to songwriting has grown more refined, and his voice, already impressive on his previous album, reaches new heights in this record.

As one reviewer noted, Let It Unfold marks a distinct continuation of Sanko’s excellence, with standout tracks that speak to his musical growth. The album opens with the title track, “Unfold,” where trumpeter Samuel Evans sets the tone right from the start, with guitarist Chris Booth following through, ensuring the rest of the album carries this polished and sophisticated sound. Throughout the album, Sanko’s vocals are as dynamic as ever, exhibiting a new level of musicality that draws from the entire history of soul music.

Fans of the great Motown era will undoubtedly appreciate the vibe Sanko channels through his work, but this album offers more than just nostalgia—it brings a fresh, contemporary edge to the genre. His voice, arrangements, and compositions stand out with the same strength and originality as soul icons like Tower of Power or Ghost-Note, proving that Myles Sanko is carving his own niche in the world of modern soul. Tracks like “Stronger” reflect the weight and power of his lyrics, which play a key role in the album’s emotional resonance.

The musicianship on Let It Unfold is top-notch, with Sanko surrounded by a stellar group of musicians who complement his vision perfectly. The album features Tom O’Grady on piano and Rhodes, Jon Mapp on bass, Chris Booth on electric guitar, Ric Elsworth on drums, vibraphone, marimba, and congas, Gareth Lumbers on saxophone and flute, and Samuel Ewens on trumpet and flugelhorn. Their contributions are seamless, elevating Sanko’s vocal delivery and reinforcing the album’s powerful message of healing and growth.

With Let It Unfold, Sanko not only showcases his refined songwriting and production skills but also proves that he belongs on the international stage. The album’s well-structured tracklist takes listeners on a journey through different musical landscapes. From the soulful groove of “Won’t Be Lonely” to the brilliant closing track “Say It,” the album never fails to captivate. Every track feels like a carefully crafted piece of art, and the 11 songs seem to pass by far too quickly.

As one listener put it, “The album is a hypnotic experience”—and it’s easy to see why. The perfect blend of jazz, soul, and funk, Let It Unfold is an album that will resonate with fans across genres, from soul and funk lovers to jazz enthusiasts. It’s a testament to Myles Sanko’s growth as an artist, and it’s no surprise that it’s earned the coveted "Indispensable" status from our team. Steve Knight Returns with For Years Gone: A Journey Through Jazz and Soul

Since the release of his 2022 debut album, Persistence, guitarist and composer Steve Knight has been riding a wave of success. With a jam-packed schedule that includes a weekly residency at a chic Chicago restaurant, community performances at a local high school, and a dozen gigs each month at clubs across the city, Knight has firmly established himself as a key figure in Chicago’s vibrant jazz scene. And now, with the release of his new album For Years Gone, he’s poised to be even busier.

Persistence earned rave reviews, including a four-star rating from DownBeat. All About Jazz described it as “engaging at every level: harmonic, melodic, rhythmic... this entire production works very well, whatever one's taste in guitar heroes might be." Take Effect praised it as “an excellent first album, highly technical and delivered with grace and adventurousness,” highlighting Knight’s ability to blend pop, funk, blues, and R&B into his jazz repertoire.

Knight’s journey began in Olathe, Kansas, where he started playing guitar at the age of 12. He went on to major in theater at Emporia State University but found himself equally drawn to music. Split between the theater and music departments, Knight played in pit orchestras, big bands, and faculty combos while teaching guitar at the university. His career took him to New York City, where he performed on Carnival Cruise Lines before studying under jazz guitar greats like Mark Whitfield, Peter Bernstein, and the late Jack Wilkins.

In 2016, Knight relocated to Chicago, where he dove into the local jazz scene. He also became involved in the community, creating the popular "Jazz in the Yard" event during the Covid-19 lockdown, which is now in its sixth season, attracting hundreds of attendees each week.

Joining Knight on For Years Gone are bassist Justin Peterson, a Las Vegas native who also played on Persistence, and drummer Linard Stroud, both established names on the Chicago jazz scene.

The album opens with “Lure,” a blues composition that Knight penned for the record. He explains, “The blues is where all jazz comes from. It’s not easy to write a great blues, but I wanted to lure the listener in with this composition, using different chords to create melodic tension.”

Another highlight is his rendition of “Pure Imagination,” a beloved ballad Knight has performed for years. He appreciates how the song’s unexpected phrases and key changes make it an ideal vehicle for jazz.

Knight pays homage to jazz legend Roy Haynes with his original composition “Cracklin’,” while his take on Pat Martino’s “Colossus” delivers high-energy, intense playing. For a more introspective moment, the title track, “For Years Gone,” was written in memory of his late mother.

The album also features “Kothbiro,” a haunting African song by Kenyan musician Ayub Ogada, which Knight discovered in the film The Constant Gardener. Another standout is his reimagining of George Harrison’s “Something,” which he transforms into a unique jazz piece by playing the iconic intro in 7/4 time.

Knight’s version of Joni Mitchell’s “Urge for Going” captures the song's powerful lyrics, creating two distinct solo sections that reflect the metaphorical and meteorological journey of the seasons.

He also revisits two jazz classics: Charlie Christian and Benny Goodman’s “7 Come 11,” which he updates with a funky twist, and “In a Sentimental Mood,” which Knight reinterprets as an uptempo burner, inspired by Ed Cherry’s organ trio version.

On For Years Gone, Steve Knight’s focus is on melody, groove, and storytelling through his guitar playing, never overwhelming the listener with unnecessary technical displays. Supported by a group of like-minded musicians, this album is a testament to Knight’s mastery of both original compositions and reinterpretations of well-known jazz and pop standards.

Jeffrey Gimble’s Long-Awaited Album Brand New Key Celebrates Jazz, Soul, and Growth

Jeffrey Gimble’s second album, Brand New Key, is a captivating mix of classic standards, lesser-known gems, and a few tracks that absolutely deserve to become standards. It marks the vocalist’s long-anticipated return since his 2013 debut, Beyond Up High. All About Jazz praised his debut, calling it “quite frankly, terrific in style, swing, and swagger.” With Brand New Key, Gimble continues to showcase his refined artistry, capturing the essence of jazz while introducing fresh interpretations that reveal his growth as a performer.

The album features a stellar lineup of Los Angeles musicians, including acclaimed pianist and composer Josh Nelson, who also produced the album. Guitarist Larry Koonse, bassist Dan Lutz, and drummer Dan Schnelle round out the band. Gimble had long hoped to collaborate with Nelson. “Josh is such a brilliant pianist and arranger," he says. "We kept talking about doing a project together, and I thought, how could I not? He’s one of my closest friends and one of the best pianists in town.”

Gimble’s musical journey began in a jazz-filled home in Houston, where he accompanied his bandleader father to gigs, immersed himself in his family's vast jazz record collection, and played piano and sang. It was during these formative years that he first encountered the Great American Songbook and the works of American musical theater, sparking a lifelong love of jazz.

Brand New Key reflects Gimble’s passion for the music of the '60s and '70s while delving into his own musical evolution. "I think the real reason I chose the title Brand New Key is because it signifies that I’m a different singer now," he explains. "I’m bringing something to the table that I didn’t have before. I’m full of new ideas and excited about where I can take a song.”

The album opens with a fresh take on the 1926 jazz standard "Bye Bye Blackbird." Inspired by old-school R&B, Gimble gives it a funky groove, influenced by Curtis Mayfield’s soul-driven style. Another standout track is "Tryin’ Times," originally recorded by the legendary Roberta Flack in 1969. A call for unity and love in the face of adversity, Gimble honors the song’s timeless message with sensitivity, while mixing in real-life street sounds for added texture.

Among the highlights is Gimble’s interpretation of the Rodgers and Hart classic "I Didn’t Know What Time It Was," from their 1939 Broadway musical Too Many Girls. The lyrics' joyful spirit resonate deeply with Gimble, who has always admired the duo's lyrical prowess.

Gimble also pays tribute to his childhood love of bossa nova with a Portuguese rendition of "A Rã (A Frog)." His deep admiration for bossa nova icons like Sérgio Mendes has been with him since childhood. A nostalgic memory of spotting Mendes backstage at a concert at age four has stayed with him, fueling his lifelong affection for the genre.

In another moment of serendipity, Gimble and Nelson spontaneously recorded "The Nearness of You," a song they frequently perform together during gigs. What started as a casual jam session ended up as a track the two felt deserved to be on the album.

The title track, “Brand New Key,” a pop hit by Melanie from 1971, adds a fun and playful twist to the collection. "It’s a little sexy, a little goofy, and I really enjoy singing it," Gimble says, adding that it was the first record he ever bought. His cover of Dena DeRose's "In the Glow of the Moonlight" draws him in with its unexpected melody shifts and octave leaps, a perfect match for his voice.

The album’s closer, "Music’s The Only Thing That’s on My Mind," pays homage to his childhood, recalling the moments when his father played "Sweet Adeline." "The music that he taught me reached right out and caught me," Gimble reflects. "Music’s the only thing that’s on my mind."

Gimble’s father, Maynard Gimble, always encouraged him to follow his heart, and that’s precisely what he’s done with Brand New Key. With Nelson’s brilliant arrangements and the band’s stellar musicianship, the album is a heartfelt, personal journey that resonates with listeners on multiple levels.

Brand New Key will be released on Café Pacific Records and will be available on Bandcamp (physical copies) and all streaming platforms on April 4, 2025.

The journey to complete the album was filled with immense emotional and creative dedication. On February 12, 2009, Mellett tragically died in a plane crash while traveling to perform with Mangione and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. Following this unimaginable loss, Bryson and Mellett’s close friend, jazz legend Barry Miles, worked tirelessly to finish Mellett’s final vision.

An All-Star Collaboration to Complete the Vision

In the months following Mellett’s death, Barry Miles, Jeanie Bryson, and engineer Ron DiCesare meticulously pieced together Mellett’s unfinished demos, sorting through hundreds of recordings to bring his vision to life. They honored every note and lyric Mellett had left behind, enlisting the help of the musicians he admired, including Chuck Mangione on flugelhorn, Steve Gadd on drums, Larry Goldings on organ, and Will Lee on bass.

One of the most exciting collaborations on the album features James Taylor, who joins Mellett and Bryson on the song “Come on Home.” Taylor’s voice and guitar lend emotional depth to this heartfelt track Mellett wrote for Bryson while she was on tour. Additionally, Mellett and Bryson’s tender duet on “You Got Me Too” is a powerful love song that beautifully captures their personal bond.

Album Highlights and Track Listing

The album’s lead single, “Everymornin’”, released in November 2024, gives listeners a taste of Mellett’s unique ability to blend '70s-inspired singer-songwriter sounds with his jazz background. The full album features 11 original songs, plus an instrumental cover of James Taylor’s “Fire and Rain”.

Other standout tracks include:

  • “Happier Days” – A joyful celebration of life and love, showcasing Mellett’s warmth as both a performer and a composer.
  • “Coming Home” – A wistful, soulful track featuring Chuck Mangione on flugelhorn, one of Mellett’s favorite collaborators.
  • “You Got Me Too” – A heartfelt love duet with Mellett and Bryson, showcasing their powerful connection through music.

A Timeless Musical Gift

As Barry Miles reflects, “We honored Coleman’s wishes. This is the album he would have released.” Jeanie Bryson adds, “This music is Coley’s legacy—his gift to the world.” Through Sing You a Brand New Song, listeners can experience the timeless spirit of a musician whose life was tragically cut short but whose music continues to inspire and touch hearts.

With a rich career that spans decades, Cain has worked with jazz luminaries such as Jack DeJohnette, Meshell Ndegeocello, and Ravi Coltrane. His acclaimed ECM release Circa showcases his unique ability to blend jazz with classical and electronic influences, making him a driving force behind Zoo Too Trio's distinctive sound.
