Known for their boundary-pushing approach to jazz, Thumbscrew has established itself as one of the most inventive ensembles in contemporary jazz, and Wingbeats is another bold step in the trio's ongoing evolution. The album dives deep into an explorative jazz landscape where rhythmic complexity, lyrical improvisation, and harmonic innovation come together seamlessly.

Laila Biali Unveils Wintersongs: An Enchanting Ode to Winter’s Majesty

Eight months after the release of her JUNO-nominated album Your Requests, acclaimed jazz pianist and vocalist Laila Biali returns with Wintersongs, a profoundly personal and original album. Her 10th recording as a bandleader, Wintersongs was composed during a winter retreat in a secluded cabin surrounded by the snow-covered peaks of Canada’s Rocky Mountains. This stunning new work serves as Biali’s musical love letter to winter, transforming her unique inspiration into an evocative collection that captures the beauty, stillness, and allure of the season.

For over a decade, Alberta’s Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity has been a creative sanctuary for Biali, where she has participated in intensive residencies that have nurtured the creation of her music. Reflecting on her time there, Biali says, “The Banff Centre is where I go to meet my muse. I have been fortunate to spend time there in every season, but I was especially surprised at how much I loved winter. I arrived on campus in late November 2021, and every day from dawn to dusk, all I could see and hear was music – in the awe-inspiring sunrises and sunsets behind mountain silhouettes, in the wind rising up through towering trees, and in the snow that constantly shifted from stillness to storm. Those images and that experience fill this suite of songs.”

Supported by the Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, and Toronto Arts Council, Wintersongs emerged as a project that would expand beyond Biali’s usual circle of collaborators, bringing in the acclaimed orchestrator Rob Mathes (Sting, Bruce Springsteen) and other legendary musicians. Longtime partner and drummer Ben Wittman co-produced, and Biali brought in celebrated flutist and soprano saxophonist Jane Bunnett. Bunnett joins Biali on tracks like Rocky Mountain Lullaby, an homage to Banff National Park’s peaks, and Dance of the Pines, a journey through winter flora, fauna, and the aurora borealis. Other musical luminaries include trumpeter Kevin Turcotte, organ virtuoso Sam Yahel, and Detroit-born vocalist Wade O. Brown, all of whom help elevate tracks like Outside, a potential seasonal classic that combines romantic imagery with sweeping orchestration.

Reflecting the organic and immersive experience of winter, Wintersongs invites listeners on a journey into what Biali describes as “uncharted terrain that resonates with the strong echoes of home.” Each song is rich with melodic beauty, resonant with themes of nature’s grandeur, and infused with a sense of discovery that feels both intimate and timeless. As she embarks on an extensive tour in November and December, Wintersongs marks a bold and transformative moment for Biali, one that captures winter in all its stillness, mystery, and majesty.

Nala Sinephro’s Endlessness: A Journey through Orchestral Ambient Jazz

Nala Sinephro’s anticipated sophomore album, Endlessness, represents a significant evolution in her music, shifting from the deeply introspective ambience of Space 1.8 to expansive, cinematic soundscapes. This album, a rich tapestry of orchestral ambient jazz, reveals Sinephro’s artistic growth as she broadens her vision to capture a sense of boundless wonder. Comprised of 10 tracks, Endlessness is entirely composed, produced, mixed, and recorded by Sinephro, who combines her nuanced approach to sound design with the contributions of a collective of esteemed musicians from the contemporary jazz scene.

A Collaborative and Innovative Jazz Landscape

Endlessness is not just a solo journey but a collaborative celebration of jazz and experimental music. Sinephro collaborates with a stellar lineup that brings unique voices and textures to her compositions. The contributors include:

James Mollison (Ezra Collective): Saxophonist known for his emotive and versatile playing, contributing depth and energy.

Morgan Simpson (black midi): Drummer whose innovative style adds rhythmic complexity and dynamism.

Sheila Maurice-Grey (Kokoroko): Trumpeter with a soulful touch that blends traditional and contemporary jazz.

Nubya Garcia: One of the leading saxophonists in jazz today, adding lyrical intensity to the album.

Lyle Barton: Pianist who adds layers of harmonic color, enhancing the immersive quality of Sinephro’s work.

Natcyet Wakili (Sons of Kemet): Known for his powerful presence and deep-rooted rhythmic sense.

Dwayne Kilvington (Wonky Logic): Producer and multi-instrumentalist who infuses an experimental edge.

Each musician's contribution brings a unique tonal and textural layer, transforming Endlessness into an intricate and profound listening experience.

Endlessness: Track Exploration

The album is organized into ten tracks, each labeled as a “Continuum,” reflecting Sinephro’s exploration of interconnectedness in sound and experience. The sequencing of Endlessness flows seamlessly, creating a continuous journey across its runtime. Each piece, while distinct, moves forward organically, drawing the listener into a soundscape where boundaries dissolve.

Continuum 1: Opens the album with gentle, atmospheric textures, gradually layering orchestral swells with delicate instrumentation.

Continuum 2: Introduces rhythmic elements that pulsate subtly, grounding the ethereal soundscape.

Continuum 3: A moment of introspective calm, with ambient washes that create a sense of inner reflection.

Continuum 4: Shifts into a more dynamic phase, where jazz elements meet cinematic soundscapes.

Continuum 5: Blends the ambient with a more jazz-forward approach, featuring emotive saxophone lines.

Continuum 6: Adds percussive layers, creating a rhythmic drive that contrasts with the ambient backdrop.

Continuum 7: A deeply meditative piece, emphasizing the minimalism that characterizes much of Sinephro’s work.

Continuum 8: Brings a rich harmonic depth, with instrumentation that feels expansive and resonant.

Continuum 9: Pulses with subtle rhythmic and melodic tension, building toward a climactic close.

Continuum 10: Concludes the album on a note of resolution, combining ambient textures with layered orchestration.

These “Continuums” are musical explorations of time and space, designed to be experienced as a cohesive whole.

Artwork and Vinyl Edition

The artwork for Endlessness is as thoughtfully crafted as the music itself. The cover features a painting by artist Daniela Yohannes, whose work captures the album's themes of infinity and connectedness with vibrant, dreamlike imagery. Maziyar Pahlevan’s design complements Yohannes’s painting, reflecting the album's depth and transcendental atmosphere.

The vinyl edition of Endlessness enhances the immersive experience for listeners with a unique feature on Side D: an etching inspired by the album’s motifs. This aesthetic touch further underscores the care and intention that Sinephro has infused into every aspect of the project, turning Endlessness into a collector's item for vinyl aficionados.

The Evolution of Nala Sinephro

With Endlessness, Sinephro steps into new terrain, moving beyond the minimal ambient approach of Space 1.8 to explore a broader, more cinematic landscape. Her compositions blur the boundaries between ambient, jazz, and orchestral music, creating a genre-defying experience that speaks to both introspective and expansive qualities.

Sinephro has often spoken about the healing potential of music, and Endlessness channels that philosophy into sound. It is an album that invites listeners to engage in a journey not only through music but also through a process of reflection, connection, and transcendence. Through her meticulous production and the deeply collaborative nature of the project, Sinephro redefines what contemporary jazz can be, making Endlessness a landmark album for the genre.

Endlessness: A Transformative Listening Experience

Endlessness is more than just a collection of tracks; it is a musical universe, a meditative space that allows listeners to experience the interplay of rhythm, melody, and space. For fans of jazz, ambient music, and experimental sounds, Endlessness is a transformative journey that resonates long after the music fades. Nala Sinephro has crafted an album that not only honors her roots in jazz but also transcends genre to offer a timeless, immersive experience.

Walter Smith III Honors Houston Roots in New Album, three of us are from Houston and Reuben is not

Walter Smith III, celebrated saxophonist and composer, draws deep inspiration from his Texas roots in his sophomore Blue Note release, three of us are from Houston and Reuben is not. This album follows his acclaimed 2023 debut with Blue Note, return to casual, and showcases a stellar quartet of musicians, three of whom share a common bond: Houston, Texas. The album title, marked by Smith’s signature humor, nods to this connection: while Smith, along with pianist Jason Moran and drummer Eric Harland, are Houston natives, bassist Reuben Rogers – an integral part of the ensemble – is a native of the Virgin Islands. The playful title encapsulates the camaraderie and chemistry of a group united by diverse backgrounds and a shared passion for musical exploration.

A Tribute to Houston and its Musical Influence

Houston, a city known for its vibrant jazz scene, holds an enduring influence over Smith’s artistry. By bringing together musicians who share this background, Smith is not only paying homage to his roots but also highlighting the rich musical legacy of his hometown. The city's impact on Smith’s development as a musician is undeniable; it’s where he honed his skills, fostered his early connections, and began to carve out his unique voice in jazz.

In interviews, Smith has often emphasized the significance of Houston in shaping his musical identity. The city’s jazz clubs, music programs, and seasoned mentors provided a foundation for Smith and many other prominent musicians who came from Houston. By featuring fellow Houston luminaries Moran and Harland, Smith captures the city’s sound, community, and spirit, showcasing how it shaped each musician in unique ways.

An Ensemble of Mastery and Chemistry

The quartet featured on three of us are from Houston and Reuben is not brings together musicians whose talents and histories merge to create an extraordinary synergy:

Jason Moran (piano): A highly respected pianist and composer, Moran has carved out a distinct niche in the jazz world with his innovative and often genre-defying approach. A fellow Houstonian, Moran shares a deep connection with Smith, both as a musician and a friend. His contributions to this album underscore the dynamic range and emotional depth that are hallmarks of his playing.

Eric Harland (drums): Known for his versatility and rhythmic precision, Harland is another product of Houston's vibrant jazz scene. His drumming adds an intricate yet grounding element to the album, weaving in Houston’s rhythmic sensibilities with finesse. Harland’s intuitive interplay with both Smith and Moran reveals a shared musical language that has been shaped by years of shared experience and mutual respect.

Reuben Rogers (bass): Despite the joke in the album title, Rogers’s playing is anything but an outsider’s contribution. Hailing from the Virgin Islands, Rogers brings his own unique cultural and musical influences, grounding the quartet’s explorations with his masterful bass work. Rogers has collaborated with Smith on various projects, and his connection with the other members is evident in the album’s fluidity and seamless transitions.

Musical Explorations and Highlights

Smith’s three of us are from Houston and Reuben is not is a testament to his ability to compose and interpret music with emotional nuance and technical skill. The album blends traditional jazz elements with modern improvisation and unexpected rhythmic patterns, pushing the boundaries of jazz in compelling ways. Each track carries the mark of Smith’s distinct tone and approach, characterized by a blend of lyricism, exploration, and deep-rooted musicality.

Some standout tracks include:

"Bayou Blues" – A nod to the Gulf Coast heritage of Houston, this track is a bluesy, atmospheric piece that captures the essence of Southern jazz. Smith’s saxophone lines are sultry and smooth, evoking the mood and soul of Houston’s jazz scene, while Harland’s drumming keeps a steady, pulsing beat.

"Houston Homage" – A more abstract piece, “Houston Homage” delves into avant-garde territory. Smith and Moran engage in a spirited dialogue, pushing the boundaries of conventional jazz phrasing and incorporating influences from blues and gospel.

"Reuben’s Groove" – As a tribute to their “honorary Houstonian” bassist, this track allows Rogers to shine with a rhythmic bass solo that transitions seamlessly into a collective improvisation. His Virgin Islands roots are subtly woven into the mix, giving the piece an island-inspired groove that adds a fresh flavor to the album.

"Second Line Stroll" – Inspired by New Orleans jazz traditions, “Second Line Stroll” captures the celebratory energy of the South. It’s a lively, upbeat number that brings out the chemistry of the quartet in full force, with Harland’s drumming leading the way in syncopated rhythms and vibrant percussion.

A Deeply Personal Project

For Smith, three of us are from Houston and Reuben is not is more than just an album; it’s a personal journey that revisits the foundation of his artistic life. The album reflects his reverence for Houston’s jazz community and acknowledges the role it played in shaping not only his musical career but also his approach to collaboration and storytelling through sound. It’s an album that speaks to the universal experience of coming back to one’s roots while embracing new influences.

Continuing the Blue Note Legacy

With his second album on Blue Note Records, Smith adds another layer to the label’s storied history, contributing to its legacy of innovation and excellence in jazz. Following the success of return to casual, which received praise for its sophisticated compositions and modern jazz aesthetic, Smith’s latest effort feels like a natural progression. It’s a deeply reflective and intimate album, echoing the warmth and vitality of his Houston upbringing while pushing jazz forward.

Blue Note has long been known for supporting artists who push boundaries, and Smith’s work with the label exemplifies this commitment. three of us are from Houston and Reuben is not adds depth to both Smith’s discography and Blue Note’s catalog, solidifying his position as one of today’s leading saxophonists.

Rediscovering Afro-Harping: Dorothy Ashby’s Masterpiece Remastered and Expanded for New Audiences

The harp, an instrument often reserved for classical music, found a groundbreaking voice in Dorothy Ashby, one of the few jazz harpists to bring it into the realms of soul and jazz. Her 1968 album, Afro-Harping, marked a pivotal moment in soul-jazz history, fusing African rhythms, soulful arrangements, and Ashby’s innovative techniques into a record that continues to captivate listeners. Now, in a remastered deluxe edition, Afro-Harping invites new audiences to experience its timeless grooves while giving longtime fans a fresh appreciation of its genius.

A Groundbreaking Album

Afro-Harping is the first album in a celebrated trilogy of soul-jazz records by Ashby that showcased her unique ability to transcend genre norms. Working with producer Richard Evans, Ashby created an album that blends jazz with soul, funk, and African music in ways that feel both seamless and revolutionary. From the percussive underpinnings to the sweeping orchestration and Ashby’s intricate harp work, the record strikes a balance between virtuosity and accessibility.

Upon its release in 1968, Afro-Harping was hailed for its hypnotic grooves and innovative approach. While some jazz harpists followed traditional paths, Ashby was drawn to bold experiments, layering African percussion with in-the-pocket rhythms that could pull listeners into a trance-like state. Tracks like “Soul Vibrations” and “Afro-Harping” go beyond mood music, drawing listeners into a lush, rhythmic journey that speaks to the power of cultural fusion.

A Favorite Among Producers and Beat Makers

Beyond jazz circles, Afro-Harping quickly gained a following among beat makers and producers who recognized the album’s unique qualities. Its atmospheric compositions and Ashby’s delicate, rhythmic harp lines became ripe material for sampling. Artists from genres like hip-hop and neo-soul found inspiration in the album’s rich textures, leading to Afro-Harping’s renaissance in later decades. Ashby’s pioneering soundscapes laid the foundation for future experiments with jazz-soul fusion, making her influence felt in music well beyond the jazz world.

The Deluxe Edition: Rediscovering Hidden Gems

This newly released deluxe edition of Afro-Harping is a treasure trove for fans and newcomers alike. Remastered from the original tapes, the album now boasts improved sound quality that highlights every detail, from the warmth of the percussion to the subtlety of Ashby’s harp. Legacy and Influence

Dorothy Ashby’s work on Afro-Harping was groundbreaking, not only for elevating the harp as a jazz instrument but also for proving that jazz could embrace global influences without sacrificing its essence.
