Chicago Unveils Previously Unreleased 1971 Live Concert Recording from The Kennedy Center

Chicago to Release Historic Concert Recording, Newly Remixed from Original Multi-Track Tapes

Experience the band's 1971 performance at The Kennedy Center on 4xLP and 3xCD

Chicago is excited to announce the release of a historic live concert recording, newly remixed from the original multi-track tapes by founding member and trumpeter Lee Loughnane and engineer Tim Jessup. This 26-track collection captures the band's dynamic performance on September 16, 1971, just a week after the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts opened in Washington, D.C. For over 50 years, this concert has remained unreleased, with the exception of the song “Goodbye,” which debuted in 2018 on CHICAGO: VI DECADES LIVE.

This concert showcases a comprehensive exploration of the three studio albums released by Chicago since their 1969 debut. The setlist features a diverse range of styles, highlighting the band's unique ability to blend rock, jazz, and pop seamlessly. Notably, the band was gearing up to record Chicago V just days after this performance. Released in July 1972, Chicago V marked a significant evolution in the band's sound and became their first No. 1 album.

“During the Kennedy Center show, we were road-testing some new material for the studio,” Loughnane shares. “For example, we performed ‘Saturday In The Park’ for the first time, and you can hear we hadn’t yet decided who would take the lead vocal. Also, Robert hadn’t written Part 2 of ‘Dialogue’ at that point.”

Track Highlights: Fans can look forward to hearing a mix of beloved hits, including:

"Saturday In The Park": Making its live debut, this upbeat anthem quickly became a summer classic.

"25 or 6 to 4": A hallmark of Chicago's sound, this track features powerful horn arrangements and poignant lyrics.

Additional songs that span Chicago's early discography, showcasing their innovative approach to music.

Band Biography: Formed in 1967 in Chicago, Illinois, Chicago began as the Big Band, a jazz-rock group that quickly evolved into one of the most successful bands of their time. With a distinctive sound defined by a powerful horn section and intricate melodies, Chicago achieved commercial success and critical acclaim throughout the 1970s and beyond.

Their self-titled debut album was released in 1969, followed by a string of hits that cemented their place in music history. With over 100 million records sold worldwide, Chicago is recognized as one of the best-selling music groups of all time, continuing to captivate audiences with their live performances and innovative music.
