NEW RELEASES: MIKE LEDONNE - AWWRIGHT!; IRA COHEN / BILL LASWELL - ON BRION GYSIN; HIDEO YAMAKI / BILL LASWELL - UNTAKEN PATH

MIKE LEDONNE - AWWRIGHT!

Organist Mike LeDonne works here with his well-named Groover Quartet – a sweet combo that backs the leader on Hammond with Eric Alexander on tenor, Peter Bernstein on guitar, and Joe Farnsworth on drums! That rock-solid lineup brings plenty to bear on the record – and Alexander's tenor alone is worth the price of admission – very well-suited to the sound of the organ, given that Eric came up from the south side in the band of Charles Earland, and really knows how to blow alongside a Hammond. The set also features guest trumpet from Jeremy Pelt on a few cuts – whose tone here is crisper and more focused than usual – and the legendary Bob Cranshaw throws in a few Prestige Records-styled basslines on a few cuts, although Mike can more than handle the bass parts with the action of his foot on the pedals of the Hammond. Titles include "Love Don't Love Nobody", "Never Can Say Goodbye", "The Boss", "Mary Lou's Blues", "Hadley Joe", and "Awwlright".  ~ Dusty Groove
