COOL JAZZ WINNIPEG FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES HEADLINERS

COOL Jazz Winnipeg Festival has announced headline acts for the 2007 festival this week. The world-class roster will include jazz piano masters Herbie Hancock and Dave Brubeck, vocalist Madeleine Peyroux, and blues guitar god Derek Trucks among the many performers.
Pushing back the dates of the festival by one week to accommodate some acts, the festival will run June 22 to July 2 rather than it’s traditional June dates.

The Performance Series headliners will feature a number of notable double-bills: Herbie Hancock teams with the Kenny Garrett Quartet, Joshua Redman Trio with post-boppers The Bad Plus, and singer/pianist Freddy Cole with saxophonist David (Fathead) Newman.

The Pyramid Casino’s New Groove Series will feature British R&B sensation James Hunter, Verve artist singer-songwriter Jackie Greene, turntablists DJ Champion and Girl Talk, hip-hopper Cadence Weapon, instrumentalists The Hylozoists, Afrobeat ensemble Antibalas and the Latin group Salsa Na’Ma.

The Windsor Hotel will showcase the Blues Series, which will feature John Lee Hooker Jr., picker Guitar Shorty and California jump-band Little Charlie & the Nightcats. The festival’s Late Nite Series showcases the inventive Vijay Iyer Quartet, Canuck singers Sophie Milman and Dione Taylor, bassist Esperanza Spalding and a host of local acts.
