When it comes to innovation in jazz, Pat Metheny has proven time and time again that he is a master of his craft. With MoonDial, Metheny returns to his roots with a deeply introspective and serene album that transports listeners to a tranquil night under the stars. Known for his genre-defying creativity, Metheny once again pushes the boundaries of sound with this album, bringing new depth to his solo guitar work while showcasing a unique instrument—his custom nylon-string baritone guitar.
A New Chapter in Metheny's Musical Journey
Metheny’s MoonDial marks a return to the solo guitar format, a style that has captivated fans in his previous works such as One Quiet Night (2003) and What’s It All About (2011). This time, however, Metheny introduces a brand-new tool in his musical arsenal: a custom nylon-string baritone guitar, crafted by the legendary luthier Linda Manzer. This instrument, paired with an innovative tuning inspired by a childhood memory from Missouri, gives Metheny the ability to express his musical ideas in ways he had never before achieved.
During a tour in the fall of 2023, Metheny experimented with the baritone guitar every night, gradually incorporating it into his performances. “The discovery of the perfect nylon strings from Magma in Argentina really opened up a new sound world for me,” says Metheny. By the end of the tour, the nylon-string baritone guitar had become a central feature in his performances, running for twenty to twenty-five minutes per concert.
The Making of MoonDial
After the success of his Dream Box album in the spring of 2023, Metheny took advantage of the winter break to record MoonDial in upstate New York. The serene, clear nights in December provided the perfect backdrop for his creative process, with the moon silently observing the music unfold. The album captures the essence of Metheny's journey—both a physical and emotional one—as he explores new sonic landscapes with his custom guitar.
“The central vibe of MoonDial is one of resonant contemplation,” says Metheny. “It’s a dusk-to-sunrise record, hardcore mellow. This guitar allows me to go deep, to a place I maybe have never quite gotten to before.”
The album is a beautiful mix of new originals, revisited older tunes, a piece dedicated to the late Chick Corea, and beloved songs by other composers. The intimate atmosphere of MoonDial invites listeners to join Metheny on his personal journey, offering a soundtrack to the stillness of the night. It’s an album that resonates deeply, connecting listeners to the quiet, reflective moments we all experience.
MoonDial—A Gift for Night Owls and Dreamers
For Pat Metheny, MoonDial is more than just an album. It’s a deeply personal expression, capturing the mood of solitary winter hours spent in creative reflection. Whether you’re an insomniac or a night owl, MoonDial provides the perfect soundtrack for those quiet, contemplative moments. “It seemed like the moon was checking out what I was searching for,” Metheny reflects. “This music is a reflection of those solitary winter hours, and it represents a new realm I hope everyone will enjoy as much as I have enjoyed exploring it.”
MoonDial is an album that takes you on a journey through Metheny's unique creative process, combining his profound musicianship with an atmospheric and contemplative sound.
