TONY BENNETT: DUETS II TV SPECIAL RECEIVES EMMY NOMINATION

Tony Bennett: Duets II, a presentation of THIRTEEN's Great Performances, that premiered on PBS in January, 2012 was nominated for a Prime-Time Emmy Award in the category of "Outstanding Variety Special." Tony Bennett: Duets II featured the 17-time Grammy Award winner's greatest hits, performed by Bennett and today's biggest stars, including Andrea Bocelli, Michael Buble, Natalie Cole, Sheryl Crow, Aretha Franklin, Josh Groban, Faith Hill, Norah Jones, Lady Gaga, k.d. lang, John Mayer, Willie Nelson, Queen Latifah, Alejandro Sanz, Carrie Underwood, and Amy Winehouse.

Tony Bennett made music history with the Grammy-nominated CD Duets II when it debuted at the top of the Billboard Album charts, making Bennett the oldest vocal artist ever to achieve the number one spot. Released in conjunction with Bennett's 85th birthday, the platinum selling release, which won three Grammy Awards earlier this year, followed the singer's Grammy-winning 2006 Duets CD which had, in turn, been released in honor of his 80th birthday.

The album took over six months to record with each track recorded face-to-face with his singing partners in studios around the world, from LA to Nashville to London. Among the many highlights is Amy Winehouse's last recorded track ('Body and Soul'), which was produced in London's famous Abbey Road Studios in March. Other tracks were recorded in New York in late July: the Richard Rodgers-Lorenz Hart classic, "The Lady Is A Tramp" with Lady Gaga, and the Alan and Marilyn Bergman classic, "How Do You Keep The Music Playing," with Aretha Franklin, and "Stranger in Paradise" with Andrea Bocelli, recorded at the singer's Italian home (see full track listing below).

The musical segments were highlighted by insights on the process from the performers, making for an up-close look at one of the year's most celebrated recordings. The sessions were filmed by Oscar-winning cinematographer Dion Beebe ("Chicago," "Memoirs of a Geisha," "Collateral"), providing a personal, behind-the-scenes look at Bennett's latest collaborations and his artistic approach with each song. BRIAN BROMBERG - IN THE SPIRIT OF JOBIM

It’s no ordinary summer for bassist Brian Bromberg, who yesterday released his second and third albums this summer via Artistry Music/Mack Avenue Records. Bromberg Plays Hendrix and In The Spirit Of Jobim pay tribute to music icons Jimi Hendrix and Antonio Carlos Jobim respectively and arrive six weeks after the release of the bass player’s critically acclaimed chart-topper Compared To That as well as the launch of his pioneering online radio station for bassists, Bass on the Broadband (http://www.bassonthebroadband.com/). The immense diversity offered in the trio of new recordings impresses through content and technique while achieving successes in all shades of jazz.


Venturing on an entirely different path, In The Spirit Of Jobim offers fresh versions of five of the seminal Brazilian music figure’s songs alongside seven Bromberg-penned originals that emulate Jobim’s breezy melodies and infectious rhythmic style. Bromberg handled production duties while surrounding himself with Brazilian musicians and The Rising Sun Orchestra in order to maintain authenticity.

The audacious Bromberg Plays Hendrix surprises in that the collection saluting the rock/blues guitarist was made without a single guitar. Accompanied only by monster drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, Bromberg plays all the lead guitar solos and melodies on piccolo, fretless, electric and acoustic basses in what becomes an astonishing showcase for the musician’s masterful and imaginative skills. Bromberg produced the record comprised of ten of Hendrix’s signature hits including “Fire,” “Manic Depression,” “The Wind Cries Mary,” “All Along The Watchtower,” “Foxey Lady,” “Hey Joe” and “Purple Haze.” The concept for the album was suggested by two different record executives from two different cultures two years apart. JIMMY CLIFF - REBIRTH

“I got one more shot at the goal/Straight from my soul/I’m in control,” sings reggae legend Jimmy Cliff on “One More,” the lead track from Rebirth, the new Universal Music Enterprises album from the Grammy-winning musician, actor, singer, songwriter, producer and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, produced by punk icon Tim Armstrong, of Rancid and Operation Ivy fame.

The release, his first studio album in seven years, is the next step in their collaboration on last year’s Sacred Fire EP, an effort Rolling Stone called Cliff’s “best music in decades… [his] tenor still soars.” With the groundbreaking 1972 film The Harder They Come celebrating its 40th anniversary, Cliff—who starred in the movie and contributed the title cut, “You Can Get It If You Really Want,” “Many Rivers to Cross” and “Sitting in Limbo” to the soundtrack—is still going strong in a career that has spanned almost 50 years and includes his native Jamaica’s highest honor, the Order of Merit. In Rebirth's autobiographical “Reggae Music,” Cliff recounts going to see famed Jamaican producer Leslie Kong in 1962 to convince him to work with him, releasing Cliff’s first hit, “Hurricane Hattie,” when he was just 14.

“Jimmy is one of my musical heroes and I’ve been responding to his music my entire life,” said Armstrong, who had never met Cliff before, but was once recommended to him by mutual friend Joe Strummer of The Clash. Gathering Armstrong’s studio band, the Engine Room (bassist/percussionist J Bonner, drum/percussionist Scott Abels, organ/percussionist Dan Boer and piano/lead guitarist Kevin Bivona), the first song they tackled was a cover of Rancid’s “Ruby Soho,” a ska-tinged number from the band’s 1995 album …And Out Came the Wolves about a musician having to tell his lover he’s headed for the road.

 had no idea it was one of Tim’s songs, but I liked it and could identify with the sentiments,” said Cliff. “I never really had the opportunity to hear his music, but it was a great thing how we hit if off in the studio.”

They also worked on a cover of The Clash’s “The Guns of Brixton,” a song about the growing tension in Brixton at the time. Ironically, Strummer’s last session ever was with Cliff on “Over the Border, a song from Jimmy’s 2004 album, Black Magic. It was at that time Joe talked up Armstrong as someone who might make a good collaborator for him.

“It was inspiring working with Tim because even the sound of the album feels like we went back to the ’60s and ’70s,” said Cliff. “I had forgotten about a lot of the sounds and the instruments we used then, and we brought that all back.”

While Rebirth is named after what Cliff perceives as his own artistic revival, the reggae pioneer has never really been away, working with a who’s-who of other rock legends over the years, including the Rolling Stones, Elvis Costello and Annie Lennox, his songs covered by the likes of Willie Nelson, Bruce Springsteen, Cher, New Order and Fiona Apple. His patented sweet tenor is the most recognizable vocal in reggae along with his only fellow Jamaican Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Bob Marley. Last year, he made a triumphant appearance at the Bonnaroo festival that put him back on the pop music map.

“The album is about my rebirth as an artist and as a man, but also about the rebirth of the world,” says the man whose 1970 “Vietnam,” has been dubbed by Bob Dylan “the greatest protest song ever written,” and served as a centerpiece in Paul Simon’s acclaimed 2011 tour, the performer citing it as his original inspiration to record “Mother and Child Reunion” with Cliff’s band in Jamaica.

Never a stranger to politics, Jimmy continues as a voice of power and conscience, especially on songs like the opener, “World Upside Down,” a song written by the late reggae pioneer Joe Higgs back in the ‘70s with lyrics updated by Cliff. “I made it for the world today,” he added.

Other socially conscious songs on Rebirth include “Children’s Bread,” with its harsh refrain, “They took the children’s bread and give it to the dogs… The time has come for us to right the wrongs.” Much of the material was inspired by his tour of African countries like Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Ghana.

“Africa is like an injection for me,” he explained. “Being there gave me that high feeling—the songs just poured out.”

But it is the more personal songs, like “One More,” “Reggae Music” and “Our Ship is Sailing” which get to the heart of Jimmy Cliff’s music, and his own artistic renewal as he heads out on a summer tour that began in Brooklyn in June with a concert streamed on NPR Music. Among his future plans are more acting roles, including a possible sequel to The Harder They Come, as well as continuing to write songs inspired by the classic soundtrack.

“I have not become the artist I believe I am,” he told Rolling Stone last year. “I’m not done at all. I want to become a stadium act.”

TIMI YURO - THE COMPLETE LIBERTY SINGLES

Before Amy Winehouse, before Adele, there was the Little Girl with the Big Voice, Timi Yuro, the greatest white soul singer of the ‘60s, male or female. Previous Timi collections have featured after-the-fact stereo remixes or album tracks—no collection has concentrated on the actual recordings that made her famous, the singles that took her to the charts in the ‘60s...till now! Here, for the first time, are the A and B-sides of all of the U.S. singles Timi cut for Liberty Records during her two stints with the label, featuring the original mono single mixes except for two tracks that were issued as 33 1/3 stereo jukebox singles, all fittingly remastered for CD release at Capitol Studios.

Among the highlights are, of course, her recording of “Hurt” (also here in an Italian version in homage to Timi’s heritage), a performance so deeply emotional and mature that viewers of Timi’s first television performances were shocked to discover that she was (a) white, (b) a female (c) barely five feet tall and (d) a 20 year-old from Chicago; the Phil Spector production of “What’s A Matter Baby (Is It Hurting You)”, in which his studio bombast met its match in Timi’s booming vocal, and the legendary Northern Soul single “It’ll Never Be Over for Me/As Long as There Is You,” which in its original 7” vinyl form trades for princely sums. Co-Producer Ed Osborne pens notes that trace Timi’s journey from Chicago to the charts along with a singles discography and photos. JACKIE GLEASON PRESENTS MUSIC FOR LOVERS ONLY

Probably the most popular, iconic mood music album ever made, Jackie Gleason’s Music for Lovers Only set the stage for untold imitators to come with its evocative album artwork and lush, sweeping soundscapes. Released as a 10” LP in 1952, it set the record—which still stands!—for most weeks in the Top Ten Album charts at 153, and hit the charts yet again in 1955 when it was released as a 12” LP. But here is where the history of Music for Lovers Only becomes, like most romances, complicated. The original 10” included only eight tracks, but Capitol’s first 12” issue of the album added eight more for a total of 16; subsequently, however, the album was reissued on LP with 12 tracks, and the out-of-print sole CD release of Music for Lovers Only featured just the eight tracks from the original 10” release.

Now, for the first time ever on CD, Real Gone Music is restoring this classic album to its full, 16-track length, with its glorious, original artwork intact—another first!—and in its original mono. As for those wondering what musical contribution Mr. Gleason made to the album, some say Gleason conceived of melodies in his head and described them vocally to his assistants. The stories follow the imaginative adventures of a seven year-old girl named Claire and her stuffed animal friends. The first title in the series, "A Swinging Jungle Tale," finds Claire in her Grandpa's backyard jungle looking for a "lost story" and powered by her imagination alone, Claire's stuffed animal friends begin to magically come to life and she learns all about their world ... and a little bit about herself along the way.

With the story for "A Swinging Jungle Tale" already translated and recorded in French, Japanese and Spanish, it is the vision of "JumpinJazz Kids" to develop a series of interactive CDs, books, apps, concerts and educational events nationally and worldwide with the premise being to teach jazz and symphonic history, provide music education, promote children's physical activity through dance and movement, enlighten their understanding of the animal world and most importantly, to allow their imaginations to flow. Concerts have already taken place with full orchestra/jazz quartet in Colorado and Milwaukee and were met with widespread critical acclaim. MASTA CONGA & THE AFRO LATIN ORCHESTRA – LATIN ODYSSEY

A great step forward for the Afro Latin Vintage Orchestra – even better than their previous album, and a set that beautifully mixes together jazz, Latin, and African elements into one seamless groove! Percussionist Masta Conga is at the head of the group – leading the ensemble with a unique vision that's less of the overdone Afro Funk you might know from other contemporary combos – and more of a classic 60s blend of elements – especially that unique hybrid of Latin modes you'd get from west coast groups – like the Afro Latin Soultet or Afro Blues Quintet – both clear choices of inspiration, given this group's name! Yet there's also some 70s elements moving through the grooves too – thanks to great Fender Rhodes lines, and bits of other keyboards too – often used in these cool spare ways that work perfectly with the mix of funk and Latin in the rhythms, and occasional bits of strings as well. SHAWN LEE’S PING PONG ORCHESTRA – REEL TO REEL

Reel-y great grooves from Shawn Lee – perhaps his funkiest record in years, and one that has a definite cinematic feel too – as you might guess from the title! The style here is blacksploitation funk at its finest – stripped down to its best core elements, and served up by Lee with a lean, mean groove that shows that he really understands the roots of the genre – and knows how to get the sound just right – while still bringing in some of his own core touches too! As we've come to expect from Shawn, the beats are mighty nice – and the album's overflowing with breaks – plenty of funk to drive along the album's heavy keyboards and guitar riffs in the lead. LES DE MERLE - TRANSFUSION

Mongoloid drum break gives way to crispy west coast jazz-funk on "Moondial" (notably sampled by DJ Shadow and De La Soul). This 1978 album released on the short-lived (but rather potent) Dobre label is diggerous wall material, exchanging hands in the 2 hundy range in the original. And aside from "Moondial", there's some excellent moody jazz numbers (almost like a midwest soul-jazz meets west coast fusion scene), check out "My Woman, Bacchanal," and "Kaballa." You'll also find some extra breaks on "Funk It" if you got the itch. It all adds up to one of these digger pieces that lives up to the hype in an odd, all-frequency type of way. Norfolk-based Andrew Taylor is also a composer of electro, ambient, funk, psych-folk in a deft and touching style, with an ability to make the lo-fi sound wide and expansive. Extraordinary folk blues guitarist and songwriter, Russell Morgan, lives and writes in Cheshire, UK. Russell's sound is defined by his honey soaked growl, writing style and a unique guitar approach. His voice and sound is a marriage of traditional acoustic folk, alternative rock and blues; revealing echoes of John Martyn and Richie Havens.

A&M RECORDS CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSAY WITH 3-CD COLLECTION

It's an archetypal story of the modern record business -- two guys with a dream running their nascent label out of a West Hollywood garage in the summer of 1962. The label quickly gains momentum and eventually becomes one of the most important record companies the world has ever seen. The two guys were Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss, the "A" and the "M" in A&M Records. By the way, it was Alpert's garage and that first hit was "The Lonely Bull," performed by Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass. And this year the two record men and UMe are celebrating the 50th Anniversary of their label.

As part of the celebration, on August 28, UMe is releasing A&M 50: The Anniversary Collection - a 60-track, 3-CD set curated by Alpert & Moss, The Anniversary Collection perfectly illustrates what a potent effect the legendary label is still having on contemporary popular music.Perhaps because one of its founders was an artist himself -- and a hugely successful one at that -- A&M Records distinguished itself as an artist-friendly label, one that would stand behind artists they believed in, album after album, until they found their voice and an audience.

"We wanted to make good records," says Herb Alpert, reflecting on the label's genesis. "That was our goal. We felt if we made good records there would be an audience." Herb and Jerry's dedication to development resulted in some of the biggest superstars in music ever: Joe Cocker, Procol Harum, Quincy Jones, Billy Preston, Cat Stevens, Carpenters, Peter Frampton, Supertramp, Jeffrey Osborne, Styx, Bryan Adams, Joe Jackson, the Police, Sting, Janet Jackson, Suzanne Vega, Sheryl Crow, Soundgarden, and so many, many more.

As iconic as the music released over the last 50 years by A&M Records was, so was the space that was home to the label for so many years: 1416 North La Brea, the former Charlie Chaplin Studios in Hollywood, and now home to Henson Studios. It's interesting to note that the state-of-the-art recording studio that Herb and Jerry built on that lot decades ago is still drawing top artists from all over the world to record there.
"People hung out there," says Moss. "You took a walk on that lot and you wouldn't believe who you would run into. It was interesting to everyone who worked there and it was a lot of fun."

At A&M Records, Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss were able to build a haven for artistic development that rivals any record label in history. Maybe it's due, in part, to the fact that A&M was privately owned and run by its founders for the first 27 years of its existence. The environment they created helped spawn some of the most important artists in contemporary music, selling millions of albums worldwide in the process and creating a legacy that is virtually unmatched in the United States. As Sting so succinctly puts it, "We definitely felt nourished and sustained by a creative team."

And now, with the release of The Anniversary Collection, music fans everywhere can sample the music of one of the greatest record labels of all time, all in one convenient place.

SIRIUSXM'S "THE JOINT" TO FEATURE TOWN HALL WITH ZIGGY MARLEY

Sirius XM Radio has announced today that Ziggy Marley will sit down for an exclusive, live Q&A session with an audience of SiriusXM listeners at The Village Studios in Los Angeles, California. "SiriusXM's Town Hall with Ziggy Marley" will air live on "The Joint," channel 42 on Thursday, August 9 at 9:00 pm ET. The special will be hosted by SiriusXM host Pat McKay. The event is part of SiriusXM's "Town Hall" series, intimate gatherings with iconic musicians and studio audiences of SiriusXM listeners. Previous "SiriusXM Town Hall" specials have featured Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Coldplay, Ringo Starr, Roger Waters, Renee Fleming, Gregg Allman, Usher, Ronnie Dunn and the surviving members of Nirvana.

The "Town Hall" special will include the five-time Grammy®-winning musician, actor, artist, activist and humanitarian and host of SiriusXM's Ziggy Marley's Legends of Reggae answering a variety of questions from the studio audience about his most recent album, Wild and Free, and the August 7th DVD and Blu-ray release of the critically-acclaimed documentary about his legendary father, MARLEY. In addition to the Q&A session, the "Town Hall" will also feature a live, in-studio performance by Marley. SiriusXM listeners will hear music from his current album as well as reggae classics written by his father.

BIG BAD VOODOO DADDY - RATTLE THEM BONES

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, longtime purveyors, custodians and distillers of a modern big band swing sound are back and newly signed with Savoy Jazz. In celebration of twenty years bringing an irrepressible groove to the adoring masses, the band has recorded Rattle Them Bones—their eighth studio album. Founding members Scotty Morris and Kurt Sodergren, plus the five other original members continue to keep their sound fresh coming off the 2009 release of their tribute to Cab Calloway. Produced by Morris and Joshua Levy with Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, the band has honed their musicality to a fine point, effortlessly striking a balance between respect for the authenticity of the swing sound and the original ideas they incorporate into the mix. JOHNNY MATHIS' MERCURY ALBUMS TO BE RELEASED ON CD FOR FIRST TIME

Johnny Mathis’ mid-’60s sides for the Mercury label have long been overlooked, though they rank among the most commercially and artistically successful recordings of his career. Why? Well, for one thing, Johnny has been a flagship artist for Columbia Records for so long that folks tend to forget that he spent three years apart from the label. But more importantly, those recordings, most notably the ten LPs he cut for Mercury, have been out of print during the entire compact disc era, as only Johnny’s Christmas album has ever come out on CD.

Now, by special arrangement with Sony Music, the artist and his management, Real Gone Music will issue these essential albums (everything but the Christmas album, which remains in print) on compact disc for the first time — nearly 50 years after Johnny’s first release on Mercury. Each release consists of two albums, each newly remastered at Battery Studios in New York, complete with original art and comprehensive liner notes featuring an exclusive interview of Johnny by pop vocal expert James Ritz (who counts these Mercury albums as his favorite Mathis recordings, by the way).

The first wave of releases includes a never-before-released album of Broadway-themed songs recorded by Johnny in 1964-1965, paired with his charting album from 1965, Love Is Everything, while the other twofer, Tender Is the Night/Wonderful World of Make-Believe, features Johnny’s first two “secular” albums for Mercury (his first release for the label was Sounds of Christmas). Both albums hit the charts in 1964, with Tender Is the Night reaching #12, and both albums feature Johnny’s dreamy takes on stage and film songs, with arrangements on Tender by the great Don Costa. ~ Real Gone Music

KINNY - CAN'T KILL A DAME WITH SOUL

Can’t Kill A Dame With Soul is the second solo album on Tru Thoughts from Kinny, an opera chanteuse turned singer-songwriter whose lifelong passion for reggae, jazz and soul music intertwines with her classical training for a unique and potent style. The new LP finds this self-proclaimed ‘freestyle improv vocalist’ channelling her trademark impulsive, freeform stylings into a more reflective set of deeply personal songs that explore escalating struggles with mental instability and identity.

Kinny’s captivating power and range of vocal expression, her diverse cultural heritage (a mix of Jamaican, Native Canadian and Swedish), and the twists and turns her life has taken all feed into the music; and her richly emotive sound never shies away from a dancefloor-filling groove or a stream-of-consciousness lyrical flow. The warm, immersive and soulful soundscape created by Norwegian producer/musician duo Souldrop (who also produced two tracks on her first album) provides the perfect cocoon for Kinny’s crystal-edged voice, the eclectic sonic palette ranging organically from big bassy beats and keys to acoustic instrumentation and percussion.

Kinny - aka Canadian born, Norway based Caitlin Simpson - is one of a handful of standout female singers to have been nurtured and developed in the Tru Thoughts stable, alongside the likes of soul queen Alice Russell and Belleruche siren Kathrin deBoer. Her 2010 solo debut Idle Forest Of Chit Chat - on which production was split between collaborators including label-mates Quantic, Nostalgia 77 and Hint – gained rave reviews and support from Laurent Garnier, Craig Charles (BBC 6Music), Mark Lamarr (BBC Radio 2) and Daddy G (Massive Attack), and sparked more than the occasional comparison to luminaries including Erykah Badu.

This time, on Can't Kill A Dame With Soul she worked exclusively with Souldrop, fellow residents of the vibrant musical town of Bergen, Norway. Creating music in one room with her production team, rather than across several international borders, made for a totally different recording experience. “It can be exciting, making tracks with people on the other side of the World and hearing the results. But for me – and I think you can hear this on the record - this way was much better for the album making process. We felt more like a unit creating something and fed off of each other’s energies...”

Lyrically, the issues Kinny battles on this album stem from her Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), a lifelong condition that has come to overwhelm her: “Every song on this album is in some way about my mental illness which affects my everyday life. All the tracks stem around my fear, pain and frustrations and how having OCD has changed me.” A long hospital stay, following a traumatic car accident in 2010, caused her underlying fears of contamination to escalate. Even while knowing it is irrational, she is unable to control it. With singing as her only respite, the visceral sense of a spiritual release – of music that just had to be made - permeates Can’t Kill A Dame With Soul. Many specific lyrics, including Let me out of this jar and It wants more in “Shrinking Violet” and I got this disease in “Mmm of my Hums”, directly relate her frustrations. Recording at Quantic’s Sonido del Valle studio in his adopted home city of Cali,Colombia, producer/musician Quantic and singer/songwriter Russell had the space and time to revel in their creative chemistry, revisiting and building on the spirit of their previous collaborative tracks which have peppered the last decade (including big hitters for Quantic Soul Orchestra and for Russell’s solo project). For legions of hopeful fans around the World, this is the culmination of a tense will-they-won’t-they storyline, and Look Around The Corner proves good things come to those who wait.

The first single is the album's title track, which came out on 10” vinyl and download on 20th February. Intricately layered and stunningly realised, it has sparked a huge buzz and an addition to the BBC 6Music Playlist. Major radio support includes repeated daytime spins across 6Music and from Robert Elms (BBC London); tastemaker play from Gilles Peterson (BBC R1), John Kennedy (XFM), Craig Charles (6Music), Emma Warren (RBMA/NME Radio), Jamie Cullum (BBC R2), Alex Lester (BBC R2) and more, plus many session and interview requests. Heavy international play includes rotation onKCRW (USA) and French national stations including FIP and France Inter. With Alice Russell’s versatile, shimmering vocals and Quantic’s trademark warm production alongside big string sections, spine-tingling harmonies, unshakable hooks and an uplifting crescendo, it is no surprise.

The lead track lights the touch paper, and the album abounds with melodies and momentum from there on in; brimming with big, classic-sounding yet fresh and original songs including the simply irresistible funky stomp of “Magdalena” and the close harmonies, Latin rhythms and bouncing melody of “Su Suzy”. There’s a taste of vintage rock ‘n’ roll on “Boogaloo 33”; and a modern take on seventies soul ballads in “I’d Cry”, on which Russell’s heartfelt candy-laced vocals play a bittersweet game of call-and-response with gypsy-folk violins and the dancing piano keys of Alfredito Linares, one of the musical stars of the record.

“Travelling Song” and “Similau” see the duo reinterpret a classic folk song from the English movement and one from its equivalent in the West Indies. You’ll also find an inspired version of the soul standard “I’ll Keep My Light In My Window”, one of Russell’s all-time favourite songs which has scarcely sounded better than in this current incarnation, on which she exercises her famed powers as a classic soul vocalist. The band take centre stage in instrumental numbers including “Una Tarde In Mariquita” and “Road To Islay”, showcasing the sheer wealth of talent running through the outfit, not to mention the compositional skills and broad church of influences for which Quantic (aka Will Holland) becomes ever more greatly revered with each release. The closing flourish – a Reprise of “Look Around The Corner” – is a compelling invitation to hit the repeat button.

Quantic, aka Will Holland, moved to Cali, Colombia in 2007, and the sessions that became Look Around The Corner took place over two visits that Russell made in the intervening four years. Pushing the concept of their previous collaborations, reflecting the locale and the players’ backgrounds, Quantic and Alice Russell infused the style with a Latin undertone; the blues and soul sound still takes centre stage though, rather like the soul records made in Miami and New York in the ‘70s, or the disco from the Bronx. Chicago’s Chess label was a key influence on the production aesthetic, and a mutual love of Minnie Riperton fed into some of the vocal melodies.

The record features Mike Simmonds (Alice Russell’s regular strings guru who joined them in Colombia from London); as well as Alfredito Linares, bassist Fernando Silva and conga player Freddy Colorado, all from the Combo Bárbaro. Wilson Viveros, from coastal town Buenaventura, was an invited drummer; also on drums for some songs was Jazz drummer Larry Joseph from Cali. Alfredito is the instrumentalist star of the show, sprinkling his magical and charismatic brand of bluesy, boogaloo piano throughout the album.

TAMBA TRIO - TEMPO

The stuff of legend – and one of the greatest albums ever from Brazil's Tamba Trio! The group have a sound here that goes way beyond standard bossa jazz – in that amidst the piano, bass, and drums, the trio also harmonize vocally too – swirling together the lyrics, which are often wordless, in these cool jazz riffs that are really amazing – soaring out above the instrumentation, to create a whole new layer of grooves! Arrangements are by the group's pianist, Luiz Eca – who really reaches a high point in his musical development here – and titles include the classics "Boranda", "Barumba", and "Consalacao" – plus "Yansa", "Moto Continuo", "Nuvens", and "Pregao". ELIS REGINA - IN LONDON

Elis Regina hits the London scene of the late 60s – with amazing results that make the album one of her best from the early years! The style here is still quite bossa-oriented, but backings are done by Peter Knight – who'd worked with Scott Walker and some of the other hip British singers at the time – so the sound's a bit different than Elis' Brazilian records, too. Knight's quite sensitive to Regina's way of interpreting a tune – and he nicely follows the soaring, jazzy vibe that Roberto Menescal had given her at home. But the groove's also a bit more open and fluid too – with some slight Brit Easy touches that really send the whole album home! Titles include a great version of "Upa Neguinho", plus "O Barquinho", "Zazueira", "Giro", "A Volta", "Corrida De Jangada", "Watch What Happens", and "Wave". (Excellent pressing – heavy vinyl and cover, and honestly nicer than the original Brazilian pressing!) ~ Dusty Groove

CHARLIE MINGUS – JAZZ EXPERIMENTS

A pivotal album in the career of Charles Mingus – one that really has him honing his sound, and reaching for that trademark mix of modernism and raw emotion that set a whole generation on fire! The album's a lot more freewheeling than other Mingus material from the time – although still a bit more compact than the Atlantic or Columbia sides – and the group's staffed with key early interpreters of Charles' vision – including John LaPorta on alto, Teo Macero on tenor and baritone, Thad Jones on trumpet, Clem DeRosa on drums, and Jackson Wiley on cello – an instrument that really helps shade in some of the darker corners of the tunes. Titles include great early originals like "Four Hands", "Minor Intrusion", "Thrice Upon A Theme", and "The Spur Of The Moment" – plus his great take on "Stormy Weather", which is a bit stormier than most! ~ Dusty Groove

DONNY HATHAWAY – LIVE / IN PERFORMANCE


Both Donny Hathaway concert albums in a single set – both on US CD for the first time! CD 1 features Donny Hathaway Live – massively beautiful work from the legendary Donny! After two studio albums that had firmly put him on the map as one of the 70s best soul talents, Atco had the genius to have Donny record this live album before very enthusiastic crowds in Hollywood and New York. The result is one of the best soul albums ever – one that shows a totally different side of Donny, and which has him jamming with a smaller, hipper, jazz-oriented group in long versions of some of his best tracks. Features a massive 12 minute version of "The Ghetto", which has loads of excellent instrumental breakdowns, a 13 minute version of "Voices Inside (Everything Is Everything)", a superior version of the track "Little Ghetto Boy", which was only ever on a soundtrack, and covers of "What's Going On" and "Jealous Guy" that really transform them from the original versions. Very similar to the classic Curtis Mayfield 2LP live set on Curtom – and with a similar "Chicago studio soulster goes jazzy and intimate" feel.

In Performance was issued after Donny's untimely death, and features rare live material from his classic years – most recorded during the same concerts on Donny Hathaway Live! As the fame of his first concert album will attest, Donny's an extremely wonderful live performer, with a wealth of talents that show that his studio work is only half the picture of his soulful creativity. Includes a great version of "Sack Full Of Dreams", plus "Nu-Po", "Song For You", "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know", and "To Be Youg, Gifted, & Black". 2CD set features new remastering too – better than ever! ~ Dusty Groove

FRANCIS LAI - CINEMA


He's got shaggy long hair on the cover, but we still love him anyway – and honestly, Francis Lai may well be one of our favorite soundtrack composers ever! Sure, the guy hit early fame for his soundtrack to A Man & A Woman, but as this big box set will attest, he had a genius career that lasted years – scoring films famously for French director Claude Lelouch, as well as a host of other screen efforts that are showcased here! The box includes many great recordings never issued on CD before – and is a great companion to other Lelouch-heavy collections of Lai's work showing his ability to go beyond famous themes, and hit a rich array of great sounds through the 70s and early 80s.

In addition to two CDs of instrumental music, mostly from the three decades of Lai's career, the package also features one more CD of vocal numbers by Nicole Croisille – the singer who really made some of his best themes shine. Piano Overlord arguably finds Herren at his loosest – though Aninha Mission has plenty of the moody, hazy beats that Herren works so well with in other guises. Speaking of beats, John McEntire plays drums on the record, which also features some additional percussion by David Perez and production by Elvin Estela and Carlos Nino. They threw in an extra "wonderful" to describe the sound of Joey DeFrancesco's Hammond on this smoking little set – tighter than ever, with wickedly fluid solos, and set up in a hip trio that includes Larry Coryell on guitar and Jimmy Cobb on drums! The album's got a tight, no-nonsense approach that takes us back to some of the best Don Patterson trio dates of the 60s – with lots of those open, flowing rhythm patterns that really set fire to Don's solos – and which here, Joey uses to show that he's one of the current kings of the Hammond! Even familiar titles come out sounding mighty darn fresh in the setting – with tracks that include "Wagon Wheels", "Solitude", "Wonderful Wonderful", "JLJ Blues", "Old Folks", and "Five Spot After Dark". ~ Dusty Groove

BROWNOUT - OOZY

As a split personality with their other notable group, Grupo Fantasma, Brownout sets out to hit the road with a compelling, funkadelic mix of psychedelic grooves from the great state of Texas. The gritty and funky "Flaximus" cements their reputation for creating spacious riffs, horny accompaniment, and classic guitar work. The wholly instrumental tune contains some Latin percussion to keep it interesting. The funky "Stormy Weather" is a classy 70's-era vocal tune created in today's age. The rootsy, earthy sound is unsurpassed by comparable artists of today. The Latin-titled "Andy Y Dando" is a funky, horn-driven delicacy with booming bass and crunchy guitars with some vocals to match. The remaining songs contain quirky electronic embellishments that bridge the gap between the worlds of funk, roots, psychedelic, soul, Latin, and jazz. SEAN O'BRYAN SMITH - REFLECTION

A first-call sideman who has played with an array of headliners steps out on faith as a frontman on Reflection, the second solo set by bassist Sean O’Bryan Smith that was released today on Groove Therapy Records. The 12-song mix of church evergreens and gospel hits along with a few well-crafted originals spotlights fine musicianship from legends and hit-makers that present the material produced and arranged by Smith as contemporary jazz instrumentals, funky R&B grooves and enlightened pop tunes. Guest Chuck Loeb’s spirited guitar and roof-raising organ blasts spark “Blessed Be Your Name,” the first single that is amongst the most added tracks and garnering the most increased spins at radio.

Reflection provides a complete picture of the musical missionary - past, present and a glimpse into the future. Originally conceived three years ago as an EP, Reflection evolved into a full-length record the more Smith listened to hymns and worship tunes. Rooted in soul music and tracked using vintage recording nuances from the STAX era, twenty-three acolytes were quick to join the processional recorded in Smith’s Nashville studio including Loeb, Randy Brecker, Gerald Albright, Frank Catalano, Jack Pearson (The Allman Brothers), Jeff Franzel (Taylor Swift, *NSYNC, Clay Aiken), vocalist Lisa Hearns and actor-musician-spoken word artist Malcolm Jamal-Warner.

Critical Jazz called Reflection “…a wonderfully moving hybrid of soul, jazz, and gospel from standards to inspired originals…A truly unique and inspirational hybrid finding a well-deserved happy place somewhere between gospel and contemporary jazz.” SmoothJazz.com wrote “It’s different, it’s refreshing, and yes, it is indeed filled with power and inspiration you won’t soon forget. Sean O’Bryan Smith’s Reflection is not to be missed!”

Opening the album in a celebratory mood, Smith’s rambunctious bass plucks the lead melody shadowed by a stirring organ on a power funk rendition of “How Great Thou Art.” In Smith’s hands, “Blessed Assurance” becomes a soul tune that would be at home on adult contemporary radio. The laid back groove cuddles a warm bass melody, Franzel’s eloquent piano musings and comforting sax licks. Smith approached his bass-work on the somber, contemplative “Mighty To Save” as an orchestral piece. His bass melody is echoed by electric guitar amidst expressive piano and organ noodling. Franzel’s original, “Me Without You,” is an aching torch song featuring Hearns accompanied by piano and six-string bass. An original authored by Smith, “Called” gives voice to Albright’s reassuring sax on the invigorating contemporary jazz affirmation.

“Will The Circle Be Unbroken” is converted into a shuffling Dixieland march that detonates midpoint into a straight-ahead jazz jam illuminated by Catalano’s swinging sax as Pearson’s slide guitar glorifies Smith’s bass oration. Brecker’s prayerful trumpet provides a personal declaration on the melodically meditative “Give Me Jesus.” The bass prophet presides at the pulpit to deliver a rousing sermon as a celestial choir bears witness on the gospel classic “The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power.” A vocal number highlighting keyboardist-crooner Gary A. Brown, Smith’s five-string bass is particularly gregarious, firing fast and furious flourishes on the love song of faith, loyalty and devotion. A marching band drum line rips the revelry in a celebration of spirit on “Battle Hymn of the Republic” as lavish horns fire up the praise on the mélange that dishes tastes of New Orleans and South Africa. Smith composed the music for the title track, a powerful and contemplative bass, B3 organ and spoken word piece that closes the collection. His probing bass invites a soul-searching journey, an honest introspective rumination on self-love and surrendering to faith.
On Saturday (July 21), Smith will perform at an album release gig at the Snow Basin Ski Resort in Snow Basin, Utah that will be filmed for a concert DVD.

A self-taught musician from Chattanooga, Tennessee who presently resides in Nashville, Smith has recorded with Keith Urban, Lady Antebellum, Anna Wilson, Darius Rucker, The Oak Ridge Boys, Larry Carlton and Rick Braun. Touring with Billy Ray Cyrus’ during the country-pop star’s peak generated live work with Rascal Flatts, Kenny Rogers, Wynonna, Esperanza Spaulding, Victor Wooten, Brian Bromberg, amongst many others, further propelling the bassist into becoming a premiere sideman.
